Celebrating 15 Years in Business!
New CW library update
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
Members of the Columbus Metropolitan
Library system updated Canal Winchester
City Council on their capital improvement
plan, which includes a new stand-alone
library building along Groveport Road in
Canal Winchester.
“We’ve been involved in an extensive
capital improvement plan over the last
dozen or so years,” said Library CEO
Patrick Lewinsky. “We’ve built 14 new or
remodeled libraries over that time period.
We’re very excited to bring a new library
(still in the design phase) to your dynamic
and growing community.”
In 2022, when asked why CML decided
to build a new Canal Winchester library
branch instead of keeping its existing
branch in the school district education center,
CML Communications Specialist Ben
Zenitsky said CML had not previously
offered service in Canal Winchester when
the branch opened in 2016.
“We’ve been keeping a very close eye on
the branch since then in order to gauge
community usage and demand,” Zenitsky.
“It’s clear that this community loves its
“It’s clear that this community loves its
library.”
- Ben Zenitsky
CML communications specialist
library and we want to make sure we’re
meeting that demand and reinvesting in its
residents with a 21st century library.”
“Public libraries of the 21st century are
more than just homes for books,” said
Zenitsky. “They are community gathering
spaces. As Canal Winchester evolves, residents
need their library to evolve with it.
That’s why a new, larger branch will
include meeting rooms, small study rooms,
and more spaces to collaborate.”
Once the new Canal Winchester library
branch is constructed, it will be the second
Columbus Metropolitan Library branch in
the Canal Winchester — Groveport —
Madison Township area. The other is the
Southeast Branch located at 3980 South
Hamilton Road, Groveport.
“Our Southeast Branch remains one of
our busiest branches,” said Zenitsky. “I’m
unsure how a larger Canal Winchester
branch would impact it, if at all.”
Season’s Greetings
and Great News for Ohio!
I am thrilled to report that my first year as your State
Senator has tremendous momentum. We are closing
this year in the right direction. One of our many wins
that I am most proud of is the record tax cuts for Ohio
families and businesses passed in the $86.1 billion operating
budget, providing record spending on public
education, and expanded school options for Ohio
families.
I advocated for funding to invest in social services, education,
health care, housing, and food security that will
positively impact mothers and babies, immigrant communities,
children, and African-American male wellness.
I am also pleased to express my appreciation for Senate
President Huffman, for entrusting me to lead Ohio’s first
housing committee. With my background in real estate,
I made it my priority to lead a committee with a mission
to gain a deeper understanding of the Affordable Housing
Crisis in Ohio, and the role the legislature can play
in being part of the solution.
This year has many great highlights, including the first
annual Job Expo my office hosted at the
statehouse, connecting Ohioans with career resources
and opportunities.
I wish you and your families a happy holiday season. We
still have a long way to go but are on the right path. I
started the beginning of this year with my legislative
priorities. Continue to hold me accountable as I persevere
with championing my commitment to Senate
District 3.
My priorities for you and your family are as follows:
● Strengthening Ohio’s workforce
● Creating affordable housing solutions
● Improving Ohio’s K-12 education system
● Expanding economic opportunities for all Ohioans
● Improving public safety, criminal justice reform and
access to justice
● Protecting religious freedom and expression
● Improving mental health and wellbeing
WHAT IS GUM DISEASE?
Most people don’t realize how
common periodontal disease (also
known as gum disease) is. Three
out of every four adults have some
form of the disease. In its early
reversible stage, called gingivitis,
gums can become red, swollen and
bleed easily. When the disease
progresses to the bone, which
supports the teeth, it is called
periodontitis. At this point it can
cause irreversible damage. In the
advanced stages of the disease, the
bone and soft tissues which
support the teeth are destroyed
and this may cause the teeth to
become loose, fall out, or have to
be removed by a dentist.
Dr. Kelly
Except in rare cases, gum disease
can be prevented by thorough
daily plaque removal by brushing
and flossing, eating a balanced diet
and by regularly visiting your
dentist for professional cleanings.
When plaque is not removed, it
hardens into a rough porous
deposit called tartar. Tartar is what
causes most of the eventual
damage and can only be removed
by a dental professional.
CW paves way
for development
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
A rezoning ordinance found approval at the Dec. 18 Canal
Winchester City Council meeting.
Council was asked to amend the city zoning map allowing
Weiser Development Company to have the property rezoned from
exceptional use to limited manufacturing.
“The existing and planned use is well within the limited manufacturing
zoning,” said attorney and applicant representative
Richard Ricketts. “This is a property that can be developed well
for these types of uses. This is going to be the entranceway that I
think we’re all going to want to see done nicely. There is substantial
interest in this property.”
According to the amendment, the 48-plus acre property previously
had similar zoning when it was located in Violet Township.
Currently, the property is used as a farm field.
Located at the corner of Basil Western and Hill Roads, roadway
improvements would be necessary and the applicant is working
with the Fairfield County Engineer’s office and the Fairfield
County Transportation Improvement District on proposed
improvements.
Properties to the north (large lot, single-family homes) and
south (limited manufacturing) are located in Violet Township.
Properties to the east (in Canal Winchester and Violet Township)
contain agricultural fields and to the west are in Canal
Winchester and zoned Planned Industrial District.
Proposed plans include a roundabout at the Kings Crossing and
Hill Road intersection and widening Basil Western Road to three
lanes to accommodate traffic from industrial businesses that are
currently under construction and planned in the corridor.
Canal Winchester staff and at the planning and zoning commission
meeting on Nov. 13 recommended the council approve the
request.
According to staff, the site has long been planned for industrial
development and several Violet Township projects within the
Basil Western corridor are compatible with the proposed zoning.
“The Weisers have been involved with this property for several
years,” said Ricketts.
Getting guns off the streets
December 24, 2023 - SOUTH & CANAL WINCHESTER MESSENGER - PAGE 3
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
A year-long accumulation of guns confiscated
from drivers or passengers suspected
of drug or alcohol use kept Madison
Township Police officers on their toes and
the community safe in 2023.
Most of the firearms were confiscated
north of U.S. Route 33, in Blacklick
Estates and other areas surrounding the
township’s jurisdiction.
“This is a very high number of firearmrelated
incidents that our officers are dealing
with on the streets today,” said
Madison Township Police Commander
Victor Boyd. “Due to our officers’ years of
experience, training and diligence, they
were able to remove these firearms from
individuals that were intoxicated and operating
motor vehicles on the streets of
Madison Township.”
Officers stopped vehicles due to probable
cause. It is illegal to have in one’s possession,
whether on the body or transporting
in a motor vehicle, a firearm while
intoxicated.
According to Boyd, the first thing an
officer is trained to do when a gun is
observed during a traffic stop is to loudly
instruct the driver and passenger to put
their hands in a visible position, before
alerting dispatch of the situation.
Other officers are notified about the situation
and provide assistance. The driver
and any passengers are then asked to step
out of the vehicle and handcuffed and the
vehicle is searched. The firearm is secured
by the officer and ownership is determined.
“The person will be told they are under
arrest, Mirandized, and then transported
back to our department for processing,”
said Boyd. “Once all the paperwork is complete,
then the suspect is transported to
the Franklin County jail.”
After a gun is confiscated by Madison
Township officers, it is checked to ensure it
is not loaded, is safe to handle, and all
information about the gun collected to
determine if it is stolen. It is then photographed
and placed in a secure property
room until the court case is finished.
“After this process, it is up to the prosecution
and judges to determine if the
defendant is allowed to have the firearm
returned to them or if the firearm will be
destroyed,” said Boyd.
The operator or passengers in a vehicle
can have a loaded firearm in a vehicle if
they are not under the influence of alcohol
or drugs and follow gun laws established
by the state.
A business owner can restrict employees
from carrying a firearm while at work, but
they cannot restrict an employee from having
a firearm in their personal vehicle as
long as they follow state laws.
Madison Township laws for carrying a
firearm either openly or concealed are the
same as the State of Ohio.
“The continual professionalism and
efforts that our officers put forth each day
Messenger photo by Linda Dillman
Madison Township Police Commander
Victor Boyd displays more than two
dozen firearms confiscated by the
department since the beginning of 2023.
to serve the citizens of Madison Township
are very evident in the number of arrests
and prosecutions that happen due to the
officer’s efforts,” said Boyd. “I also think
the positive atmosphere that has developed
within our department in the last
couple of years is largely due to the hiring
practices that we have adopted. We have
been very fortunate to find and hire those
officers that are truly driven and motivated
each day to go out and perform the work
they were hired to do.”
Trip to Europe creates many Christmas memories
I love making lists on paper. It makes
me feel productive when I go shopping and
end with a page full of crossed out items or
a lengthy to-do list that is empty by the end
of the day.
There is one list of mine that is short,
very short, with only five items–my personal
bucket list with sights I want to see
and places I want to go, including the
Valley of the Kings and pyramids in Egypt,
a sunrise on Machu Pichu in Peru, Petra in
Jordan, the Sistine Chapel, and a
Christmas market in Austria.
This year, 2023, I finally drew a line
through two of them–the Sistine Chapel
and a Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market)
in Vienna–after years of saving and a
COVID hiatus. My husband and I finally
took our “trip of a lifetime” in November by
visiting Rome, Venice, Zurich, and Austria.
I have a personal connection with the
city of Mozart, Schubert, and Haydn. My
mother hails from Wien and my cousins
still live there. When they asked where I
wanted to go, and remembering my bucket
list, the first three words out of my mouth
were “a Christmas market.”
I’ve dreamed of seeing one in person
For your Medicare business!
I loved meeting new clients and visiting
with my existing clients...you deserve
and need to review and know your
Messenger
after watching PBS and travel channel specials
on European holiday markets.
Columbus tried one many years ago on the
grounds of city hall on West Broad Street.
It was wonderful and much like its foreign
counterparts with quaint huts and talented
vendors, but was not well attended.
I wanted to wander among small stands
decked out in lights and holiday cheer that
offered handmade ornaments, gingerbread
hearts bidding Frohe Weihnachten (Merry
Christmas), carved wooden pyramids powered
by candles and more.
My simple request was filled eight times
over with a visit to Vienna’s main
Christkindlmarkt at the foot of city government–the
Rathaus–along with five smaller
district markets along the way, another
on the grounds of the Schonbrunn Palace
and the last, and best, one at Schloss Hoff
(a baroque era estate outside of Vienna).
I had no idea there was more than one
Christmas market in Vienna.
The city is divided into districts and
each one sponsors their own version of the
holiday tradition, which started in 1296. At
any one time there are more than a dozen ,
often within walking distance of each
other, from mid-November to Christmas.
They all are charming and depending on
the location, offer many different artisancrafted
items such as handmade clothing,
colorful ceramics, jewelry, toys, pastries,
and smoked meats hanging on poles alongside
cheeses.
You can walk along a street decorated
overhead with lighted chandeliers and
shops in existence before America was settled
and, without warning, come upon
another holiday market. However, there is
no mistaking the city hall market with its
inviting archway, double-decker carousel,
skating rink, and lines of stands weaving
their way throughout the area.
It is not called the Viennese Dream
Christmas Market for nothing!
We were fortunate that our stay in
Austria afforded us the opportunity to visit
Places
Linda
Dillman
the Schloss Hoff
Christmas Market
near the border of
Slovakia. Held only
one weekend a year,
which coincided with
our trip, it was a perfect
opportunity to
see the historical
estate decked out for
the holidays with
eighty vendors scattered
throughout
buildings and
grounds.
Where horses and
carriages were once
housed in transporting
princes and princesses, tables now displayed
beautiful bowls, glittering glass
ornaments and tiny carved berries soaked
in fragrances of the season.
A brass band played songs of the season
while a bicycle-riding, human-powered
merry-go-round of vintage bicycles and
benches entertained little ones. Since it
was mid-November and there was a chill in
the air, an outside stand offered hot gluhwein,
a spicy heated wine enjoyed throughout
Germany and Austria during the ski
season. Bar tables in the form of animal
and tree forms helped visitors like us enjoy
their gluhwein and a vast assortment of
sweet and savory regional delicacies.
The opportunity to cross off one of my
bucket list goals went so far beyond my
expectations, I now have layers upon layers
of memories (and photos, lots and lots of
photos) to revisit in the years to come.
Merry Christmas everyone. I hope the
memories that you make this holiday season
are ones that you, too, can happily
revisit in years to come.
2023:
The Year
in Review
What a whirlwind! My first eleven months in the
Ohio Legislature have been full of adventure, excitement,
learning, and—best of all—accomplishment.
Twenty-nine budget amendments I sponsored or
co-sponsored made it into the $86.2 billion 2024-25
State Biennium Budget signed by Governor
DeWine—more by far than any other freshman legislator.
The budget included record allocations for
our public schools while also returning an unprecedented
$3 billion to taxpayers. In addition, legislation
I joint-sponsored to reorganize the Ohio
Department of Education into the Department of
Education and Workforce passed the Legislature
and has been enacted into law. It reassigns responsibilities
from the dysfunctional State Board of Education
and holds accountable to the governor the
state’s education bureaucracy. I’m finishing the year
with 100% voting and attendance records at both
session and committee meetings.
The 80-acre Westland Shopping Center is now
being demolished, making way for a proposed office/residential/entertainment
mixed-use development.
The Hollywood Casino has conducted the
groundbreaking for a new 180-bed, seven-story
hotel on its premises. In Grove City, Forge Biologics,
American Nitrile, and Tosoh, among others, all are
expanding their company operations. The Columbus
Partnership, Central Ohio’s economic development
organization, has selected our district as the
first for which it is compiling an inventory of available
commercial properties and buildings for additional
corporate expansion or relocation. We have
begun to accomplish our agenda of economic
growth, more and better jobs, and quality K12 education—both
for Ohio and for the communities in
our district!
The work continues. The capital budget will be the
first task we’ll tackle in 2024, allocating state funding
to community building projects. We’ll tackle
legislation on a variety of topics vital to us throughout
the year.
It is an awesome responsibility with which I am entrusted.
It is a privilege to serve in this capacity and
Hamilton 2024 graduation
to be at World Harvest
After multiple surveys completed by
Hamilton Township High School’s senior
class, this school year’s graduation commencement
ceremony for the Class of 2024
will be held at World Harvest Church
located at 4595 Gender Road in Canal
Winchester.
The graduation ceremony will be held
May 21 at 7 p.m.
Four the past four years commencement
was held at Fortress Obetz.
According to Hamilton Local Schools
officials, one of the primary reasons for the
change is to eliminate the stress and
uncertainty caused by weather-related
reschedules. By moving the event indoors
the ceremony can be held rain or shine.
Holding the commencement at World
Harvest Church provides time for families
to plan, make necessary arrangements,
and ensure that no one misses this significant
event in the lives of our graduates.
Hamilton Schools drivers’ education program
As of Dec. 11, 2023, Hamilton Township Schools will partner
with the MOV ESC Driving School to provide driver education to
Hamilton Township students.
This will be a comprehensive and hands-on drivers’ education
program designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge
needed to hit the road safely.
Led by in-house, certified driving instructors, the program will
cover everything from basic road rules to advanced maneuvering
techniques.
Students will have the opportunity to clock in essential driving
hours, gaining valuable real-world experience in a supportive and
controlled environment.
According to district officials, not only does the program emphasize
the importance of road safety, but it also aligns with Hamilton
Township Schools’ commitment to provide a well-rounded education
that prepares students for life beyond the classroom.
Hamilton Township Superintendent Tyler said, “We’re thrilled
to offer this drivers’ education program to our students. It’s an
important step in fostering responsible and confident young drivers
who will contribute to a safer community. This initiative aligns
with our district mission; Every Ranger, Every Reason, Every
Day.”
“Upon recognizing the availability of this licensing program
and its potential impact on our students, we engaged in discussions
with Superintendent Tyler to explore the possibility of offering
this program,” said Hamilton Township Board of Education
member Amber Clark. “Through these conversations, it became
evident that implementing a comprehensive drivers’ education
program aligns seamlessly with our 3E’s initiative as well.”
School board president Wally Obert and Clark both spoke about
how the program will remove barriers for students, particularly in
the realm of driving, thereby enabling them to thrive in various
aspects of their educational journey.
Hamilton Township Schools will partner with the MOV ESC
Driving School to provide driver education to Hamilton
Township students.
The integration of this program will contribute to the success of
our Career-Based Intervention efforts, facilitate students’ ability
to travel to earn college credits through our CCP program, secure
internships, and gain valuable work experience.
“We believe that by offering a program like this, we are not only
addressing a critical need but also equipping our students with
essential life skills that extend beyond the classroom” said Obert.
District officials are still working out the details, but it is likely
there will be financial assistance available to those who qualify.
Madison could get sidewalk grant
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
A grant helping communities and
schools install new sidewalks and repair
existing ones could be the answer in
improving pedestrian walkways in
Madison Township.
During the Dec. 12 Madison Township
trustee meeting, Administrator Susan
Brobst said Community Development
Block Grants are available with the
Franklin County Engineer overseeing the
application process.
Sidewalk repairs are done in zones, with
schools as a priority, and accomplished in a
multi-phase/year repair program. The
application can be submitted at no cost to
the township or Groveport Madison
Schools.
In addition to school sidewalks, the
block grant also offers funding to construct
sidewalks in existing neighborhoods that
meet requirements.
“The county engineer believes the
Wingate, Walburn, and Trenton area
would qualify for such a grant,” said
Brobst. “If awarded, the township would be
responsible for the cost of the design. The
grant would pay for the bid process and
construction of the sidewalks. Staff recommended
the trustees submit a request to
the county engineer to determine the scope
and fee cost for the design.”
Once information from the engineer’s
office is received, the trustees will determine
the next step in the process.
Other Madison Township news
•Fire Station 183 will be paid off in
2024, which is two years earlier than projected,
and the fire department plans to
order a new medic next year, but it will
take at least three years before the township
takes delivery of the vehicle.
•Both the fire and police departments
are implementing a mental health check-in
for their personnel with certified counselors
and contract negotiations for the
police department begin in early 2024.
“A certified counselor will meet individually
with each employee so they can get to
know each other on a casual basis,” said
Brobst. “That way if we ever have a critical
incident and the counselor is brought in to
debrief an employee, they’ll already know
each other. Truro Township and others are
already doing this and it’s a good idea to be
more proactive with mental health.”
•The police department is hiring an
additional officer, which brings the number
of sworn personnel to 22 officers.
•The trustees accepted a $26,591 award
for the fire and public works departments
for a Bureau of Worker’s Compensation
Safety Grant. Public Works is acquiring a
hydraulic piece of equipment and the fire
department is completing an equipment
package for the engine at Station 183.
This not your typical
holiday horror-comedy
Director Magnus Martens and screenwriter
Aleksander Kirkwood Brown have
laid out a few simple rules to survive in
their new holiday creature feature,
“There’s Something in the Barn.”
•Rule number one: Do not upset the
creatures in the barn with bright lights.
•Rule number two: Do not upset the
creatures in the barn with loud noises.
•Rule number three: Do not upset the
creatures in the barn with changes in the
barn, to the barn, or around the barn.
Sounds easy, right? Well, the creators of
this delightfully silly horror-comedy know
there is no fun to be had when their characters
decide to follow the iron-clad keys to
staying alive.
After an opening scene that demonstrates
what can happen when an individual
breaks the rules — hint: it involves an
autopsy report that states the cause of
death is “catching oneself on fire” after surviving
a fall from a two-story barn window
— we meet the protagonists of the film, an
American family who inherit a farmstead
in Norway after the sudden passing of a
relative. There are four victims, I mean,
four members of the Nordheim clan: Bill
(Martin Starr), the hapless father who
thinks nothing bad ever happens in
Norway; Carol (Amrita Acharia), Bill’s second
wife who is a self-proclaimed self-help
guru; Nora (Zoe Winther-Hansen), Bill’s
surly elder teenage daughter who is
despondent over leaving sunny, warm
California; and Lucas (Townes Bunner),
Bill’s sensitive younger teenage son who is
trying to see the positive in moving to a
new country with a new culture and a new
language.
Their inherited home is a picturesque, if
remote farm, complete with a wooden barn
that has seen better days. In terms of holiday
movies, this house is an A+ holiday
house, a postcard-worthy setting complete
with rolling hills nestled with glistening
and pristine snow. But, as the locals
advise, they should not get too attached to
the beautiful property as there is something
not quite right there.
The trouble with the farmstead,
explains Tor (Calle Hellevang Larsen), a
friendly neighbor who is the local museum
director for mythical Scandinavian creatures,
is that their barn is inhabited by
nisse, or magical elves who are willing to
help out with the land as long as their
rules of no bright lights, no loud noises,
and no changes are followed.
“If you follow the rules, you’ll be fine,”
Tor tells the family.
Of course, only Lucas takes these rules
to heart and begins to make offerings of
friendship to the barn elf (played by Kiran
Shah), who kinda looks like a cross
between a disheveled Santa doll and
Gizmo, the mogwai from the 1984 classic
creature feature “Gremlins.” Since he
wants to live in harmony
with this magical
being, Lucas tells his
father and step-mother
about the creature and
encourages them to
make friends with the
nisse as well.
For their part, Bill
and Carol do not want
to hear that anything
is amiss with their
new properties, nor do
they want to hear that the elf does not
want to see any changes to the land. You
see, Bill and Carol have plans for their new
home, and those plans include transforming
the dilapidated barn into a quaint bed
and breakfast for vacationers around the
world.
Feeling as if their children need to make
friends, Bill and Carol decide to throw a
few raucous parties complete with song
and dance and plenty of alcohol. They also
decide it is too dark in their stretch of the
woods and they need holiday nights to be
strung up everywhere to illuminate the
night.
The final straw for the increasingly
angry and desperate barn elf is a slight
over a breakfast meal: He wanted porridge
as a peace offering and what he got was
cold fish after a hungry Bill mistakenly ate
his plate. The chaos that follows between
barn elf, barn elves, and humans is one of
the weirdest and funniest things I have
seen on the screen all year.
In terms of recent holiday horror-comedies,
“There’s Something in the Barn”
never quite reaches the highs of
“Krampus” or even “Violent Night,” but it
has the right combination of humor and
horror to hit a sweet spot inside of those
who sometimes have more, let’s say, less
than jolly tastes around the holiday.
Filled with great jokes at the expense of
both America and Norway — Bill and Carol
keep expecting people to have guns while
the Norwegians just want peace despite
being shot with arrows and other objects —
and littered with some light gore at the
expense of both humans and elves alike,
this film is a gift that you don’t want to
miss this holiday season, or any that come
on a rewatch thereafter.
