Summer is synonymous with
sun-soaked adventures, but
for our pets, the rising temperatures
pose potential dangers.
As responsible pet owners, it’s
crucial to understand the risks
and take proactive measures to
ensure our furry companions
stay safe and cool during the
scorching months.
Heat stroke, or heat stress,
occurs when the body›s heat
production surpasses its ability
to cool down, resulting in
hyperthermia and, in severe
cases, organ failure. This
life-threatening condition can
escalate rapidly, especially for
pets outdoors on hot days.
Certain breeds such as Pugs
and French Bulldogs are more
susceptible to heat-related
issues. Additionally, animals
with heavy coats need special
attention. Consider scheduling a
grooming session to keep them
comfortable and facilitate easier
tick checks.
When temperatures soar, it’s
best to bring your pets indoors,
preferably with access to a fan
or air conditioner.
Some practical tips to safeguard
your pets:
Ensure outdoor enclosures
are shaded throughout the day,
as the sun’s position changes.
Provide fresh water daily and
consider adding ice cubes on
hot days. Check sipper bottles
for blockages.
Place a wet towel for your
pet to sit on, create a doggy ice
block, or use a child’s plastic
seashell sandpit as a pool.
Avoid walks during the
hottest part of the day. If the
ground is too hot for your feet,
it’s too hot for your pet’s paws.
Stay vigilant for signs of
heat stroke, including excessive
panting, sluggishness, drooling,
vomiting, and loss of consciousness.
If your pet exhibits these
symptoms, act promptly:
Move your pet to a cooler
place and check its breathing.
Cooling Measures: Wrap
your pet in a cool wet towel,
avoiding ice-cold water.
Seek Veterinary Attention:
Contact your vet immediately
for professional assistance. Call
Avalon (9918 0833) or Newport
(9997 4609).
