Bryan’s new whodunnit
Q: How did you get into writing
and why?
Pitches I was writing for
film and television began to
take on a life of their own.
They became stories. Hence a
bunch of them became ‘Sweet
Jimmy’ (a collection of short
stories published in 2021).
Now a much longer short
story has become a novel:
‘The Drowning’.
Q: What inspired
you to write The
Drowning?
I know a particular
area of the north
coast of NSW. I
surf there. I know
the community.
The little nearby
towns. The different
demographics.
The vitality and the
quiet. It was natural
that I’d want to set a
story there.
Q: How did it all come together?
When did you write
ONE-
FINGER
TYPER:
Bryan
Brown.
it/ how long did
it take?
I began the book
late 2022. I had
an incident that
I knew was arresting
for the
reader and I
also had three characters that
would take me on a ride. The
book was finished early 2023
and then there was a little
finessing. Not a lot. It usually
comes racing out. Not straight
away but on some days an
hour or two and then nothing
for a week maybe.
Q: Describe your writing
habits…
I can’t sit for long writing
away and I am a one-finger
typer. As I said, the characters
tell me the story. Some
days they have nothing to tell
me and then some nights just
before sleep they announce
where they are going. Next
morning I’m in front of the
computer.
Q: Any interesting feedback
so far?
I’m interested in what the
locals in a particular town
will think because I’m sure
they are going to reckon I’ve
set ‘The Drowning’ there!
*‘The Drowning’; published
by Allen & Unwin. RRP –
$32.99. Available at all good
bookstores or online.
CYC grant
gives Marine
Rescue boost
Marine Rescue Broken
Bay has enhanced its
operational capabilities
following the completion
of crew and training rooms
and a dedicated administration
area at its Bayview
facility.
The internal fit-out was
made possible through
a $42,551 grant from the
Cruising Yacht Club of
Australia SOLAS Trust.
The grant is part of a
larger $300,000 three-year
funding commitment.
In the first 11 months of
2023 the Broken Bay unit
safely returned 283 people
to shore, completing 132
search-and-rescue missions
including seven life-threatening
emergencies.
The new rooms will
enhance the unit’s ability
to respond swiftly and
effectively to emergencies
on the water. – NW
