Ben Kershaw and Kahrel Reddin scored two
superb late goals from distance to secure
victory at St. George’s Park, after Nikola Jojić
had given the Potters the lead.
The Serbia Under-21 international added
his third goal in five PL2 appearances on
31 minutes when he capitalised on an error
made by Forest goalkeeper George Shelvey,
who couldn’t claim a cross from Liam
McCarron, presenting the City winger with
the chance to finish at close range.
Forest found a way back into the game in the
The Potters came close to restoring their lead
only a minute later when Nathan Lowe saw
his close-range shot cleared off the line by a
Forest defender.
However, Kershaw restored City’s advantage
ten minutes from time when he fired a
powerful right-footed volley beyond Shelvey.
Reddin then added to the Potters’ tally to
secure three points in the dying moments
of the game when he latched onto a perfect
pass from Jack Griffiths before driving a low
finish home.
EFL CHAMPIONSHIP | BET365 STADIUM
are embarking on a new adventure under a fairly new head coach and there
are sure to be plenty of twists and turns ahead for the Lions.
The South London club sat 15th in
the division when Rowett left The
Den but the fixture list has been
tough on new head coach Joe
Edwards, meaning Millwall have
dropped to 20th in the table.
Play-off chasing Sunderland have
been welcomed to South London
since Edwards’ arrival and the
Lions have also faced off against
automatic promotion hopefuls
Ipswich Town and Leicester City.
The Lions have amassed five points
since Edwards’ appointment,
although their tough run of fixtures
tells a story of its own, and with
the January transfer window fast
approaching, the new head coach
will have the opportunity to make
changes to his squad as he sees fit.
“This one is talking about bringing
in players to make an impact,” the
37-year-old recently told the South
London Press. “For those ones
who can really make an impact
then you’re normally talking about
players who have been elsewhere
in the first half of the season and
really standing out.
“It then becomes a really
competitive market. You get other
clubs that, sometimes if they
have a bigger budget, are able to
trump you.
“There are other situations like the
rate of injuries continues to grow –
across the board. Therefore clubs
have got players in their squad that
although they are not getting loads
of game time – I’m sure the player
would want to get out and play –
some managers will simply just be
scared to leave themselves short.”
The turn of the year sees the
fixture list, on paper, ease a little
for the Lions although the typical
nature of the Championship
applies with any team able to beat
another on a given day.
Last season the Lions departed
the bet365 Stadium with
maximum points thanks to Zion
Flemming’s solitary strike.
The Potters’ last three points
against the Lions in ST4 came in
March 2022 when Jacob Brown
and a George Saville own-goal
e’re on somewhat of a break from the
fixture list currently with our next match
scheduled for January 7 when we face a trip
to Huddersfield Town. But, of course, that doesn’t
mean the hard work has been paused, we’re still
working as hard as ever to make sure we’re in the
best place possible when we return to action.
There was disappointment our Staffordshire
County Cup match against Hednesford Town was
called off on December 17 due to conditions that
were beyond our control. We were ready to put in
a competitive performance and hopefully secure
our progress to the next round of the competition.
But once the tie is rearranged we’ll be ready to put
our all into the match and ensuring we progress as
far as we possibly can.
Finally I would like to wish you all a very merry
Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year. We
look forward to seeing you in the New Year for a
positive second half of the campaign to add to the
first half we have already had.
Enjoy the match
A relative rookie in managerial terms, Joe Edwards took his first steps
into senior management when he accepted the Millwall head coach’s
The 37-year-old’s playing career
came to an early end following
his release by Chelsea at the age
After being appointed Chelsea
would lead the Blues to two
being named assistant manager
to Frank Lampard when the
Chelsea legend returned to
FROM THE HEAD COACH
steven schumacher
Good afternoon and welcome to the bet365 Stadium for today’s
Championship encounter with Millwall – a special occasion for
myself as my first fixture as Stoke City’s Head Coach.
I am hugely grateful for the positive
messages I have received during my
first few days with the Club.
Mark Hughes (Assistant Head Coach),
Peter Cavanagh (First Team Coach),
Darren Behcet (Goalkeeper Coach)
and myself are all immensely proud
to represent your club. Being here is a
massive honour and privilege for us all.
When I met John Coates and Ricky
Martin, and listened to their vision,
plans and passion for the club,
I quickly knew this was an opportunity I
wanted to take.
Clearly our bond with everyone at
Plymouth Argyle was strong given the
success we enjoyed. It was going to
take something special to lure us away,
and I believe we have found that here.
It is evident to me that we inherit a
really talented group with a healthy
balance of experience and promising
young players, who I am excited to
develop out on the training pitch.
I believe we have a squad capable
of climbing the table and there is
no hiding from the fact that we must
quickly find a way to improve results.
Our home form will be so important as,
for me, it is the foundation of success
for any team.
The bet365 Stadium has to be a
formidable place, somewhere that other
teams don’t enjoy visiting.
Supporters should be excited to come
to home games, be entertained and
ready to play their part in helping the
team get a result.
The values that resonate with me for a
Stoke City side are bravery and hard
work to the point of leaving everything
out on the pitch, coupled with a desire
to play attacking football and be a team
our supporters can connect with.
If we do that, I know you will get behind
the team and forgive an indifferent
result or performance here and there.
We will be brave, take risks and make
bold decisions. Clearly we won’t get
every decision right, but when we get
them wrong, we will hold our hands up
and be accountable.
When things don’t go to plan, it
will never be for the lack of trying.
Everything we do will be geared
towards positive outcomes for
Stoke City.
Our first challenge is the visit of
Millwall this afternoon, and I would
like to offer a warm welcome to Joe
Edwards and the players, staff and
supporters who have made the journey
to Stoke-on-Trent today.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
to you all.
Enjoy the match.
WITH SOHAIL SAHI
8
So it’s Steven Schumacher
next for what is turning out
to be a red hot head coach’s
chair at Stoke City.
It will be Schumacher‘s
second top job and much like
his close friend Ryan Lowe he’s
decided the time is right to
seek a new challenge with a
club that has a bigger playing
budget than Plymouth’s.
It’s Stoke’s fifth new manager
since the ten-year spell in the
Premier League came to an
end six seasons ago. In Steven
Schumacher they have selected
a man who has worked
diligently to find himself at a
club who have a real desire to
get back into the top flight.
From afar Steven strikes me
as someone who will thrive
under the spotlight. He has the
natural charm and confidence
of a streetwise Liverpudlian
and I look forward to speaking
to him every post-match for
the next half of the season.
John Coates and Ricky Martin
might have just picked out
a real gem, but as always in
football, time will reveal all.
As I finish my notes I will
end with a few words about
Paul Gallagher.
Paul did a fine job taking
control of the last two matches,
he has a bright future ahead
and I was chuffed to see he’ll
remain at the club as part of
the management structure.
A peaceful Christmas to
all Stokies.
Come up and say hello
Sohail

WITH THE SENTINEL’S PETE SMITH
here are a few good ways to introduce yourself to
TStoke City fans as a manager and winning at Arsenal
has to be up there with the best.
It was August 1981 when
Richie Barker took over
the reins. To put it into
context, that’s a month
before the first television
broadcasts of Only Fools
and Horses and Postman
Pat, a month before Steve
Bould made his debut,
and tickets cost £1.80.
A crowd of 28,212 saw
Lee Chapman coolly slot
home the only goal of the
match past Pat Jennings
just before half-time at
Highbury. Following a rule
change that summer, it was
Stoke’s first three-point
haul. Barker would go on
to take the Potters to the
verge of the European
qualification playing a
scintillating brand of
football before a tactical
Damascene moment on a
Lilleshall coaching course.
Stoke had just come
through two seasons
back in the top-flight
when Barker emerged
as first choice to replace
his Sunderland-bound
pal Alan Durban, whose
own approach to visiting
Arsenal 11 months
previously has earned
him a place in folklore.
Having lost their first
two away matches of the
season 5-1 at Norwich
and 5-0 at Nottingham
Forest, Durban had the
temerity to field a fiveman
midfield, earning the
wrath of pundits.
“If you want
entertainment, go and
watch clowns,” he told
reporters, adding in a
Sentinel interview 20
years later: “My job was to
send the Stoke supporters
home happy, not entertain
the ****** Arsenal fans.”
Barker and Durban,
former team-mates at
Derby and coaches at
Shrewsbury, had gone to
watch games together
that year, even though
Barker was a Wolves
trainer at the time. They
would still watch games
together in retirement,
living near each other in
Shropshire before Barker
died at the age of 80 in
2020.
Barker later recalled: “I
didn’t make too many
changes but we brought
in some good signings
over the season, like
Dave Watson – who won
England caps with us –
and Sammy McIlroy from
Man Utd in the spring.
We stayed up and tried
to keep building. In
came George Berry and
Mickey Thomas and I
remember the first game
of that next season, also
against Arsenal, when
Mark Chamberlain made
a tremendous debut and
we beat them again 2-1 at
the Victoria Ground.”
Michael O’Neill and
Gudjón Thórdarson also
started their spells at
Stoke with wins but the
result on Day One hasn’t
always been an indicator
of what was to come.
Tony Pulis lost his two
debuts at Walsall and
Southend, Lou Macari
lost his first Bradford and
Tony Waddington lost
at Plymouth. Still, three
points this afternoon
would be nice.
Millwall’s top
goalscorer in 2022/23
has struggled to match
his numbers from last
season, but remains
a constant threat in
the Lions’ attack. The
31-year-old ended last
term with 16 league
goals to his name but
so far this has managed
to hit the back of the
net on two occasions,
although the forward
has contributed three
assists to bring up
his overall seasonal
numbers.
Scottish stalwart
Murray Wallace has
been an almost everpresent
for the Lions
this season, sitting out
just once match across
the competitions. The
versatile defender
has also appeared in
a variety of positions,
from central defence
to the left side of
midfield, Wallace’s
contribution has been
important to the Lions.
Matija Šarkić makes his
first return to the bet365
Stadium this afternoon
since his loan spell with
the Potters in the second
half of last season. The
stopper joined the
Lions on a permanent
transfer from Wolves
in the summer transfer
window and was initially
No. 1 at The Den before
injury ruled him out for
a number of weeks. The
26-year-old has returned
between the sticks in
recent weeks.
Another consistent
name on the Millwall
team sheet is that
of George Saville.
The Northern Irish
midfielder has made 20
appearances in Millwall
blue this season
contributing two goals
and one assist to the
cause, with his last
strike for the Lions
coming in Joe Edwards’
first match in charge
of the South London
side as they dismantled
Sheffield Wednesday
by four goals to nil at
Hillsborough.
broke with real pace and created some
ACADEMY NEWS
Stoke City Under-21s overcame
Nottingham Forest by
securing a 3-1 victory on
Monday evening. By Louis Eccleston
Ben Kershaw and Kahrel Reddin scored two
superb late goals from distance to secure
victory at St. George’s Park, after Nikola Jojić
had given the Potters the lead.
The Serbia Under-21 international added
his third goal in five PL2 appearances on
31 minutes when he capitalised on an error
made by Forest goalkeeper George Shelvey,
who couldn’t claim a cross from Liam
McCarron, presenting the City winger with
the chance to finish at close range.
Forest found a way back into the game in the
early stages of the second half when Julian
Larsson managed to wriggle away from
defender Jake Griffin before slotting beyond
Blondy Nna Noukeu.
City’s Under-21s will be back in action when
they take on Norwich City in PL2 at Clayton
Wood on Monday, January 8 (7pm kick-off).
STOKE CiTY
WOMEN
Good afternoon and
welcome back to
the bet365 Stadium
for this afternoon’s
match.
e’re on somewhat of a break from the
fixture list currently with our next match
W scheduled for January 7 when we face a trip
to Huddersfield Town.
