PLAYOFFS<br />

What a fantastic way to end our fall sports<br />

season. We had a number <strong>of</strong> runners<br />

compete at Michigan International<br />

Speedway for State Cross Country Finals.<br />

Then Cass City and North Branch were our<br />

final 4 volleyball teams, with North Branch<br />

winning the MHSAA Division 2<br />

Championship. In football, we had 5 state<br />

semifinalists (Kingston, Deckerville, Ubly,<br />

Millington, and Frankenmuth), with Ubly<br />

winning the MHSAA Division 8 11-player<br />

football Championship.<br />

We are extremely proud <strong>of</strong> our area<br />

athletes and also very grateful that we get<br />

to tag along and follow these outstanding<br />

young men and women. Please continue to<br />

IN THE HISTORY OF HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL<br />

THERE HAS NOT BEEN A MORE PROLIFIC KICKER<br />

IN TERMS OF MADE EXTRA POINTS THAN UBLY’S<br />

BRETT MUELLER. HOWEVER, HIS VALUE TO THE<br />

BEARCATS GOES FAR BEYOND JUST CONVERTING<br />

EXTRA POINTS.<br />

His right leg is quite possibly the best defensive<br />

weapon for Ubly, opposing teams began their drives<br />

on the 21.2-yard line. “He doesn’t play defense, but he<br />

makes such a difference for us there,” said Ubly head<br />

coach Eric Sweeney.<br />

The Bearcats featured the area’s most potent <strong>of</strong>fense<br />

over the past three seasons and Mueller has been<br />

nearly automatic with the extra point.<br />

This season, he converted 76-<strong>of</strong>-81 and for his career<br />

is 220-<strong>of</strong>-232. Against Harbor Beach, in the Division 8<br />

district championship, he broke the MHSAA record for<br />

career extra points.<br />

During his first two seasons, Mueller was a kicker only,<br />

but expanded his role to tight end,<br />

at his own request. He ended up<br />

being Ubly’s top pass catcher<br />

with 14 for 461 yards and six<br />

touchdowns.<br />

“After the banquet last year,<br />

he came up to me and said he<br />

wanted to be a little more part<br />

<strong>of</strong> the team and run the ball,”<br />

Sweeney said. “The more I<br />

thought about it, he was built like<br />

a tight end. He was better <strong>of</strong>f playing tight end than<br />

running back because he was going to get banged up.<br />

His kicking was too important for us.”<br />

Ubly’s team will look quite different next season<br />

without Mueller there to set the tone with his kicking. “I<br />

think it would be very difficult to have the success we’ve<br />

had without him kicking the ball,” Sweeney said. “He’s<br />

been a very vital part <strong>of</strong> our team. It’s so easy to coach<br />

when the other team has to start so deep in their own<br />

territory.”<br />

DURING HER CAREER FOR THE NORTH<br />

BRANCH VOLLEYBALL TEAM, CLARA GYOMORY<br />

TRANSFORMED FROM A PLAYER WHO STARTED<br />

OUT JUMPING OFF THE WRONG FOOT, TO THE BEST<br />

OUTSIDE HITTER JIM FISH HAS EVER COACHED.<br />

Gyomory was an integral part <strong>of</strong> the success for<br />

the Broncos, as they defended their Division 2 state<br />

championship.<br />

The three-year varsity player was second on the team<br />

in kills (513), second in blocks (76), second in aces (74),<br />

while leading team in hitting percentage (.407) and kill<br />

percentage (50.1).<br />

Her hitting percentage was third best in Michigan and<br />

her kills ranked No. 4. “This year,<br />

her stats just jump <strong>of</strong>f the charts,”<br />

said Fish. “The most impressive<br />

thing is she hit .407. She did that<br />

over 1,023 attempts. When you<br />

have that many attempts, you have<br />

to be very consistent. It’s rare to<br />

get a hitter, with a number that<br />

high.”<br />

Fish credited Gyomory’s<br />

commitment to improving her<br />

game during the <strong>of</strong>fseason, as a<br />

reason for her success with North<br />

Branch.<br />

All <strong>of</strong> the hard work culminated<br />

in a scholarship from Northwood<br />

University. “They gave her everything but books, they<br />

really, really wanted her,” Fish said. “She got a great deal.”<br />

As Gyomory leaves the Broncos, Fish discussed life<br />

without her on the team. “We can’t replace her; I’ve never<br />

had a right side like her,” he said. “She was really special.”<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> all, Fish will miss the person more than the<br />

player. “She’s very quiet,” he said. “She’s got a very sweet,<br />

gentle heart. I can’t say enough about her. She’s so<br />

respectful and always works hard.”<br />
