The Word on the Street
The New Year looms.
It’s time to start thinking
about resolutions.
What resolution would
your spouse like you to
make for yourself?
haddonfield.today | 3
KATHLEEN
STOLTZFUS of
Cherry Hill: “My
husband just redid
our kitchen. It’s
gorgeous and he’s
so proud of it. I think
he would like me
to resolve to keep it
spotless.”
MARY ANN
BIGELOW of
Haddonfield: “He’d
want me to resolve
to relax and stop
overthinking things.”
KIMBERLY RICE
of Cherry Hill: “He’d
say: “I want you to
resolve to take as
good care of yourself
as you take of
others.”
KATE ZSCHECH of
Haddonfield: “He
would ask me to
remember my worth
and resolve ‘to take
care of myself as
much as I take care
of other people.’”
JILL SAYRE
LAWLOR of
Westmont: “That’s
easy, because
he frequently
comments that I’m
‘always on the go.’ He
would want me to
resolve to take more
time for myself.”
DENISE STUART
of Haddonfield: “My
husband would
want me to stop
talking so much
about work. And
Rotary. He’d say,
‘You’re supposed to
be retired!’”

A perfect present for grandpa
› Having trouble finding a holiday gift for your
retired husband, father, or grandfather?
A local community group has just what you need.
One size fits all, and it’s really affordable!
The 65 Club is a social and service organization
for retired male residents of Haddonfield. Members
meet each Thursday in the clubhouse on 110
Rhoads Ave. Most meetings feature a guest speaker.
The club holds seasonal luncheons and wine-andcheese
get-togethers to which spouses are invited,
as well as several bus trips during the year. There
are regular bowling and golf outings, card games
each week, and an extensive book lending library.
Members raise funds to support a variety of
local charities – the Salvation Army’s Kroc Center
in Camden, for example. They serve as marshals
for local 5K runs (including one sponsored by the
Haddonfield Lions Club). On behalf of the Salvation
Army, they ring the Red Kettle Bell outside the
Acme during the holiday season.
This “perfect present for grandpa” will set you
back all of 37 cents a week – although the treasurer
would prefer an annual check for $20.
For more information and a membership
application, go to haddon65club.blogspot.com or call
Underground
Railroad talk
› Untold stories of
courage, resilience, and
defiance against the
shackles of slavery will
be unveiled at 12n on Sat
Jan 13 when Ellen Alford
author, of Abolition and
the Underground Railroad
in South Jersey: Not
Without a Fight, speaks at
the Public Library.
During the Civil War
era, southern New Jersey
was a hotbed of slave
fugitives, freedmen and
abolitionists.
The proud 22nd
Regiment of the US
Colored Troops included
hundreds of Black New
Jerseyans ready to fight
for emancipation and the
Union cause.
Abolitionists such as
Harriet Tubman, Abigail
Goodwin, and Benjamin
Sheppard operated
among key landmarks
of the Underground
Railroad in South Jersey.
Slavery and the rights
of Black Americans
were at the forefront of
the region’s attention,
including stories such
as a melee in a Cape
May hotel between
Black waiters and white
patrons, the covert
signaling of boats
ferrying fugitive slaves
across the Delaware
River, and the daring
rescue by local church
worshipers of a runaway
slave from the hands of
slave catchers.
Fri Jan 19, is Monty
Python’s Spamalot.
Spamalot tells the
legendary tale of King
Arthur’s quest to find
the Holy Grail. Inspired
by the classic comedy
film, Monty Python
and the Holy Grail, the
musical also diverts a
bit from more traditional
versions of the legend.
Instead, Spamalot
features shenanigans
including a line of
beautiful dancing girls,
a flatulent Frenchman,
killer rabbits, and a
plague with a 50%
chance of pestilence and
famine.
The show will run thru
Sat Feb 3.
