CHAIRMAN’S

WELCOME

Good afternoon. I would like to welcome

the directors, players, management and

supporters of Farsley Celtic FC to the

Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium

for what we hope will be an enjoyable

afternoon.

Mark Jones and our players will be arriving

today with springs in their steps, following

an excellent performance and 2-1 victory

away at King’s Lynn Town FC on Tuesday

night. The match was rescheduled at quite

short notice and we know that this meant

a lot of the Puritans faithful that normally

follow the team religiously just couldn’t

make the trek to Norfolk. Those that did

make it were rewarded with a strong

Banbury side putting on a great show. Let’s

hope we see more of that today, and we

manage to start winning at home!

Today’s match is sponsored by Work Area

Ltd, which supplies specialist laboratory

chairs, office chairs, seating for sterile

& ESD rooms, industrial environments

and new in School Laboratory Stools &

Chairs. They also make stackable ‘Haz

Mat‘ storage and a wide range of lockers

for different environments & purposes.

Welcome to Neil Hancox and team.

If you notice a higher proportion of young

people in today’s crowd, that’s because

we’ve invited the Banbury United Youth

players to join us, hopefully bringing a few

parents along as well. This is on top of our

December “Bring a Buddy” scheme, where

Club members can bring a friend with them

and enter for just £5, which includes a

free drink. This promotion continues for our

Chorley and Brackley matches, so I urge

you to either befriend a member, or even

better, become a member yourself!

FROM THE DUGOUT

Jonah's Jottings

Good afternoon. I’d like to welcome

Clayton Donaldson and the staff

and players of Farsley Celtic FC to

the Banbury Plant Hire Community

Stadium and wish them a safe trip

back to Yorkshire later today.

The win at King’s Lynn on Tuesday

was a really good result for us. I felt

it was a good team performance

and we had a lot of 7s and 8s out

of 10. Our shape out of possession

looked solid and we had some

moments of good quality in and

around the attacking third. I was

delighted for Ken Charles who

scored a brilliant free kick against

his old club and Adi Yussuf was

in the right place at the right time

again to score our second goal.

With some recent games being

called off we have used the time to

reflect on the first 20 league games

and reset ourselves for a busy

period of games coming up. We

have had many positive moments

so far this season, particularly the

three away wins on the bounce

culminating in the 2-1 victory

away to top of the table Tamworth.

It’s also fair to say that on some

occasions we haven’t performed

in the way we wanted to and have

had some disappointing results,

but we have to look forward

and the game today starts off a

period of three games in a week.

We are looking at that as a good

opportunity to get some points on

the board, but as I always say, if

we want to achieve good results,

we will have to produce good

performances and be effective at

both ends of the pitch.

I do believe we have a good bunch

of lads in the dressing room who

want to do well and although we

currently find ourselves 16th in the

league table, we do have games in

hand on most teams in and around

us. Obviously, we need to win those

games and I’m confident the lads will

give everything they have to get us

climbing that table. It’s still very tight

with only three points separating us

in 16th to Spennymoor in 9th.

Hopefully we have a clean bill of

health after Tuesday’s game and we

also have Jack Davies and Aidan

Elliott-Wheeler available today after

their suspensions, so the squad is

looking stronger than it has done

over the last three weeks or so.

We are still trying to add a player

or two to help the group and have

used the last couple of weeks to get

out and watch games and potential

targets. It is a tricky time of year to

recruit players though because clubs

and managers understandably don’t

want to leave themselves short over

the busy Christmas period of games.

We will continue to look for players

that we believe can come in and

add to our group, that fit into the

budget.

In the meantime, let’s really get

behind the current group of players

that are working their socks off for

the club. I know your support is

greatly appreciated by the lads.

Enjoy the game.

We Are United!

OUR VISITORS

WELCOMING OUR VISITORS:

FARSLEY CELTIC

The old Farsley club (the name Celtic

being added later) initially competed

in the Leeds Amateur leagues and

played its first game at the current

site in 1948.

Throughout the 1950s and 60s Celtic established

themselves in the Yorkshire Leagues, being crowned

champions in 1959/60 and 1968/69, although

failing to be promoted as a result of ground

regulations. A First Round FA Cup tie against

Tranmere Rovers at Leeds United’s Elland Road

ground in 1974 proved to be the highlight of the

decade, and the 11,000 crowd that saw the Celts

lose 2-0 to a Steve Coppell-inspired Rovers is still

the largest crowd in the club’s history.

As the Yorkshire and Midland leagues merged in

1982, Farsley began in Division One North. By the

mid-80s the club was invited into the Northern

Premier League.

After a few largely uninspiring seasons, the new

decade brought unparalleled success. In 2004/05

under the inspired management of Lee Sinnott, the

team won the Unibond League Premier Division only

to have points deducted as the result of Spennymoor

Town going out of business and its results being

expunged. The reduction in points resulted in the

Celts securing only a Play-off place, losing

controversially on penalties against Workington in

the final.

6 | WE ARE UNITED

Promotion was secured the following season after a

Play-off final victory against North Ferriby and in the

following campaign, the club’s first in the

Conference North, they reached the First Round of

the FA Cup losing in a replay to MK Dons as well as

securing promotion to the Conference National.

A single season of Conference National football

resulted in relegation to the Conference North.

On-going financial difficulties saw the Administrators

appointed in June 2009 with the club’s results

expunged in March 2010 when the Administrator

prohibited the club from fulfilling its fixtures.

The re-formed club were placed in the NCEL Premier

Division for their first season which turned out to be

highly successful with a league and cup double

recorded. Many of the former players remained

loyal to the club and top spot was held for much of

the season, with the title confirmed on the

penultimate weekend of the season.

The 2011/12 season was almost as successful, with

a top five spot being secured ensuring qualification

for the Play-offs. Unfortunately, the Semi-Final

opponents were Witton Albion who won 3-0 and

deservedly booked a place in the Final, going onto

win promotion after defeating Curzon Ashton.

The following season didn’t quite go to plan with a

disastrous run in the closing months, saw Neil

Parsley’s side go without a win in the final eight

games. Inconsistent form before this point had all but

OUR VISITORS

put an end to the club’s play-off chase and a 14th

place finish was all that could be mustered.

The side made it through to the Final of the Doodson

Sport League Cup against Warrington Town in the

2014/15 season at Edgeley Park. Despite a goalless

score line at full time Farsley eventually lost out on

penalties. The game proved to be the last for the club

as Farsley AFC as they had their original name

reinstated through the close season. On 19th May

2015 the club were officially known as Farsley Celtic

FC once again.

2015/16 started disastrously with only two points

gained from the opening seven league fixtures and

the Celts rooted in the relegation spots. The season

though turned with an incredible 15 game unbeaten

league and cup run, which started in mid-November

and lasted until late February. That run put Farsley in

the hunt for a play-off spot, but the pursuit of

promotion was dashed during March, when a single

point was taken from a six league encounters. A

topsy-turvy season ended with the Celts in 9th

place, seventeen points adrift of a play-off spot.

The 2016/17 campaign turned out to be a dramatic,

but ultimately successful one. After a League season

that saw the Celts battle Lancaster City all the way to

the last game of the season, but in which the Dolly

Blues claimed the automatic promotion spot and the

title, Farsley had to do it the hard way. They

overcame Colne 4-0 in the Play-off Semi-Final and

had to come from behind to take the game to

extra-time and ultimately a 4-2 win over Ossett

Town to clinch promotion to the EVO-STIK Premier

Division.

2017/18 saw Farsley return to the EVO-STIK Premier

and finish a highly creditable 5th spot and in doing

so, clinch the last Play-off position. Unlike the

2016/17 season there was to be no happy ending

though, as the Celts lost 2-1 at eventual Play-off

winners, Ashton United.

2018/19 saw Adam Lakeland’s side go one better

as they won promotion to the National League

North. The summer of 2019 also saw a change of

Chairman when Paul Barthorpe took the reins from

John Palmer.

Farsley adapted to life back at level six immediately

and held their position in the play-off places for the

first few months of the season, having recorded

notable wins at clubs such as Gateshead and

Brackley Town. As the COVID-19 crisis halted the

season and the final league tables were worked out

on a Points-Per-Game basis, Farsley were ranked

11th.

Much of the squad were retained for the Celts’

second year in the National League North, although

as the previous campaign, the season was halted

prematurely due to the ongoing pandemic. When

the season was officially declared null and void in

February 2021, Farsley were sitting 11th in the

league, two points off the play-offs.

Thankfully, the 2021/22 season was played to a

finish, although a dramatic campaign for the Celts

went down to the final couple minutes of the season.

The season began under the leadership of Adam

Lakeland, who was entering his fifth season in

charge at the club, but he unexpectedly stepped

down in October. Under-23s manager Neil Ross

was appointed caretaker manager, and a few

weeks later given the role on a permanent basis, but

it turned out to be a disastrous appointment. The

team picked up just one win in 11 league games and

slipped to the bottom of the league table – the rest

of the season would be a battle against relegation.

Ross left his post as first team manager at the end of

January, with Russ Wilcox his replacement a few

weeks later. The former Scunthorpe United and York

City boss instilled confidence back into the side with

Farsley picking up five wins in Wilcox’s first three

months in charge, seeing them move clear of the

league’s sole relegation spot. However, a late

resurgence from local neighbours Guiseley meant a

three-way relegation battle between the two Leeds

sides and AFC Telford United went down to the final

afternoon of the season. The Celts came minutes

away from relegation back to the NPL, following

defeat to Boston United, but two late goals from

Alfreton Town, Guiseley’s final day opponents, saw

the Derbyshire side take a 2-1 win, condemning The

Lions to the Northern Premier League and saving

Farsley in the process. This was followed up with yet

another dramatic end to the 2022/23 season

where, despite losing 2-1 away at Spennymoor

Town on the final day of the season, the Celts were

saved from relegation due to Kidderminster beating

Kettering 3-0.

MATCH REPORT

Heartbreak for the Puritans as a late

Curzon effort bounces past

Jack Harding’s outstretched glove

BANBURY UNITED

Saturday 25th November 2023

Vanarama National League North

Banbury Plant Hire Stadium

Attendance: 493

CURZON ASHTON

Hayden Campbell (90+1)

Undeserved loss for the Puritans

Banbury didn’t deserve to lose this game with a goal

in the 92nd minute but lose they did.

Goalmouth action was at a premium with the first

dangerous shot arriving in the 56th minute when

Jack Harding made a good save from an Adam

Barton effort on the edge of the penalty area, which

he managed to tip over the crossbar for a corner.

Banbury’s best chance didn’t arrive until the 69th

minute when substitute Tope Obadeyi was foiled by

‘keeper Cameron Mason after being put clear, with

a ball over the top from Aidan Elliott-Wheeler. The

latter had to leave the field in the 81st minute after

receiving a second yellow card for a tackle from

behind to foil a Curzon attack, and this curtailed

Banbury’s attacking ambitions after seeing the team

definitely improve from a neutral opening hour.

Suddenly United had to defend deeply for the last

ten minutes and Haydn Campbell made them pay

when he netted with a speculative shot which went in

at the far corner to take all three points back to

Manchester.

Getting to know

Charlie Waller

GRAB YOUR FREE PULL-OUT

POSTER ON THE CENTRE PAGES

AND GET IT SIGNED BY CRAIG!

Welcome to our special

feature celebrating

Charlie Waller

Charlie Waller is a name that might not

be too familiar amongst the Puritans

fan-base, however it is a name that

will soon be a household name in the

Townend if his performance against

Curzon Ashton is anything to go by. In

this week's player special we speak to

Charlie to introduce him to the Puritans

faithful and find out a little bit more

about our recent signing.

Charlie spent his youth career at EFL side MK

Dons impressing throughout the age groups. The

young Dons centre back was rewarded for his

impressive performances growing up by being

made captain of their Under 18 side. Spartan

South Midland outfit, Tring Athletic, took note of

the high quality performances Charlie was putting

in for MK and offered him his first taste of senior

football in December 2022 at the age of just 17.

This step up would see many youngsters struggle,

not least with the increased physicality, but also

with what is asked of them in terms of the win at

all costs. Charlie however took to life in senior

football like a duck to water, yet again

impressing. Southern League Premier Division

Central strugglers AFC Rushden and Diamond

offered Charlie the opportunity to step up two

levels in the pyramid and he joined the Hayden

Road outfit in the midst of a relegation battle.

Charlie made eight appearances for the

Diamonds before returning to the Dons to see out

the end of his scholarship

As the 2022/23 season drew to a close, Charlie

was given the news that MK Dons wanted to

offer him a professional contract for this upcoming

season. This incredible personal achievement was

followed by him making his first team debut when

he came off the bench for the Dons in a 4-1

victory against Chelsea U21s. He more than held

his own in this game leading to him being

rewarded with a first start, again in the EFL trophy,

this time against EFL League 1 Northampton

Town. This game will live long in the memory for

Charlie for many reasons, not only because it

was his first start but also because he grabbed his

first senior goal for MK Dons, scoring an

impressive equaliser which set MK Dons up to

leapfrog Oxford United and win Group F.

This season has seen Charlie have another loan

spell at Step 3, this time in the Isthmian Premier

League at Billericay Town before making the next

step in his footballing journey to the Puritans

where he will be testing himself in the very

physical National League North. To date Charlie

has made this step up look simple by announcing

himself to the Banbury fans with a Man of the

Match performance on his debut against Curzon

Ashton. If his first performance in a red and gold

shirt is anything to go by, Charlie will have a long

and impressive career in the game.

Farsley started well and it was no surprise that

they took the lead in the 14th minute through

Lewis Butroyd. There was little reaction from

United as they continued to look off the pace

and Farsley went further in front with a second

goal in the 25th minute when Jimmy Spencer

nodded the ball home at the near post from a

right wing cross. After the interval, United

improved and in the 53rd minute they went

very close when a Ben Acquaye cross from the

left found Slavi Spasov at the near post, but his

flick came back off the inside of the post and as

the ball came across the goal, goalkeeper

Owen Mason managed to reach an arm out

and claim the ball just before Spasov’s boot

could connect. With fifteen minutes to go,

Carlton Ubaezuonu made it 3-0, a good finish

at the far post from a quick counter-attack.

Sixty seconds later, United sprung into life

when Spasov nodded the ball home at the far

post to reduce the arrears, but Banbury had left

it too late for the goal to make any difference.

The return game at the Banbury Plant Hire

Community Stadium last season took place on

the last Saturday in February. After a quarter of

an hour, Banbury went close when a Henry

Landers shot from a tight angle inside the

Farsley Celtic box, rattled the outside of the

post. On the half hour, Banbury’s Jack Harding

tipped over Bobby Johnson’s shot from the

edge of the box but it would be the Puritans

who would break the deadlock just before half

time when Ben Acquaye cut the ball back from

the by-line with Jack Stevens sweeping the ball

home from close range. Remarkably, within

seconds Celtic were level, a Carlton Ubaezuonu

strike finding the bottom corner of the net

following a long throw from Tom Allan. Just six

minutes into the second half and the visitors

were in front, Frank Mulhern unleashing a

dipping half-volley from 25 yards that nestled

into the top corner of the net. Banbury plugged

away for the rest of the game, searching for the

equaliser that would eventually arrive in

stoppage time when Stevens rose at the back

Adi Yussuf receiving congratulations after his goal at

Farsley Celtic

post to thunder a header past Max Dearnley.

This season, the game at Farsley Celtic was

played on Saturday 23rd September. Banbury

were “quick out of the blocks” with home

goalkeeper Zan-Luc Leban having his fingers

stung in the first minute when he was almost

caught out by a 20-yard effort from Louis Hall

that he managed to palm away to safety.

However, in the tenth minute United were in

front, Adi Yussuf holding off two defenders as he

sprinted forward with the ball, his strength

enabling him to fire powerfully home from 15

yards. Banbury continued to have the better of

the half though Farsley went close two minutes

from the interval when United had Tai Fleming to

thank for clearing a goal-bound shot from

Darren Stephenson. The second half saw

chances come and go for both sides. For United,

in the 66th minute, Lawson D’Ath took advantage

of some lack of challenges from the home

he laid the ball off to Tope Obadeyi, the United

striker miss-hit a good chance from 12 yards,

trying to keep his shot low, he hit the ball into the

ground and over the crossbar. Hard work and

good defending by the Puritans kept United

ahead as the game neared its conclusion though

the home side did go close in the 83rd minute

when Tom Allan saw his header come back off

the top of the crossbar. Banbury’s win should

have been more emphatic as, in the first minute

of time-added-on, Simeon Maye managed to

blast the ball over the crossbar from inside the

six-yard box.

ALL OUR YESTERDAYS

Banbury’s seven match unbeaten run came to an abrupt end on Saturday 13th December 2003 as they went down 6-1

at Eastleigh in a Southern League Eastern Division game. It was very much a depleted squad for United as they were

without Ollie Stanbridge and Les Robinson through injury. And with Wayne Blossom still in some discomfort from a minor

operation and Paul Eldridge suffering with flu (though both played) it was always going to be a difficult afternoon.

United were 3-0 down after just 12 minutes following some abject defending and the result was, not surprisingly, never in

doubt from that moment on. Banbury did put a goal back on 66 minutes through George Redknap but within five

minutes the home side had restored their three goal advantage and then added a couple more to make the final score

6-1.

Banbury United: Simon Tricker, Wayne Blossom, Dean Spriggs, Kieran Sullivan, Jason Allen, Paul Eldridge, Scott Taylor

(Andrew Stidder), David Billington, Mark Simms (Liam O’Neill), George Redknap, Chris Potter. Subs (not used): Ryan

Breslin, Kevin Brock.

Banbury gained their first Southern League home victory of the season on Saturday 10th December 1983 with a

convincing 4-1 victory over bottom of the table Milton Keynes City. It was all over by half time as the Puritans raced into

a 4-0 lead. Manager Phil Lines introduced new signing John Coleman on the wing and brought in former Alvechurch

defender Russell Davies for the first time.

United made a bright start and striker Alan McLaren, on his home debut, scored the first goal after only six minutes when

the visiting keeper fumbled a right wing cross and the former Manchester United apprentice moved in swiftly to fire the

ball home. Kenny Smith made it 2-0 after 18 minutes, Coleman netted the third on the half hour mark and then just a

minute later Mark Boyland made it 4-0. Milton Keynes pulled a goal back early in the second half but there was no way

back for the visitors after their first half mauling.

Banbury United: Mark Taylor, Bob Stockley, Dave Woodland, Russell Davies, Ian Bowyer, Mike McFarlane, John

Coleman, John Baker, Kenny Smith (Wayne McDowell), Mark Boyland, Alan McLaren.

Saturday 16th December 1933 and Spencer Villa were away to Grimsbury in a Banbury Junior League Section C game.

Five consecutive league victories had put Spencer into Championship contention but on this day they had to settle for a

0-0 draw.

The Spencer defence had an outstanding afternoon with Dick Varney in particular playing exceptionally well at right

back and goalkeeper Tom Penrice equal to anything that the Grimsbury forwards could throw at him. Spencer were

fortunate that Grimsbury missed good chances in the first half but dominated the last twenty minutes though they were

unable to find the goal that would have brought them the victory. After this game Spencer Villa were fourth in the table

with 12 points from eight games played. Mollington were league leaders with 21 points though Spencer did have three

games in hand on them.

Spencer Villa: Tom Penrice, Dick Varney, Dick Manning, Archie Bywater, Eric Lowe, Mervyn Laver, Joe Hobbs, Joe

Taylor, Geoff Carter, Jack Ballinger, Harold Hands.

YOUTH TEAMS UPDATES

As we welcome members of our youth teams to

today's game, let's take a look at their progress

Today marks a special occasion for the

football club as we are privileged to

welcome members of our youth teams to

the game. The Banbury United badge is

proudly displayed on the chests of local

children from the age of seven upwards.

With so many of our players in

attendance today, I took the opportunity

to speak to some of the managers who

give up their own time to work with their

players, developing them both on and off

the pitch.

Banbury United Under 9s:

Due to high demand at the Under 9 age group,

the decision was taken to enter a second team into

the Witney and District League. As a new team

they had to start at the bottom but they have put in

some impressive performances finding a healthy

balance between working hard and having fun

which has seen them rapidly rise up through the

leagues. Following their winter break, they will

begin their spring season in the A league of the

Witney and District League.

UNDER 9s

Banbury United Under 12s:

Our Under 12s have not had the easiest of

journeys on their short footballing pathways,

missing out on many years of crucial development

due to the COVID 19 pandemic. However, they

are more than making up for lost time as they go

from strength to strength with each passing season.

Last season they reached their first cup final which

they followed up with a great tournament win in

the summer. This positive momentum has carried

on into their league form as they currently sit eight

points clear at the top of their table following an

undefeated start.

Banbury United U13s:

Our Under 13s’ team have had an impressive start

to the season finding themselves third going into

the last game of their autumn mini league in third

place and with a shot at promotion. This exciting

squad of players made up of seven Midland

Junior Premier League (MJPL) players will certainly

be one to look out for as they develop through the

age groups and, who knows, maybe one day

these players will pull on the famous Red and

Gold and take to the pitch representing the town

they grew up in as first team players.

We also have two more Under 13 teams

representing the club. One of these playing in the

MJPL and the other playing in the Oxfordshire

Youth league. Our MJPL are brand new for this

season and have made an impressive start to life

at this level finding themselves 23rd out of 65

teams whilst having between one and four games

in hand on every team above them giving them

the opportunity to further fly up the table.

Banbury United Under 14s:

Our Under 14s have had an action-packed start

to the season competing in both the MJPL on a

Saturday and the Oxfordshire Youth League A

UNDER 12s

division on a Sunday with impressive

performances in both. The side currently finds

themselves 26th out of 72 teams in the MJPL whilst

they chase down Swindon Supermarine in the

Oxfordshire Youth league sitting just one point

behind the Wiltshire outfit. They are also the

defending Oxfordshire County Champions,

having beated Clanfield 3-0 in the final of last

year's Ron Smith Under 13s trophy at Oxford City.

Banbury United Spencer

Under 16s:

Our Under 16 Spencer team have progressed

through the age groups together with this team’s

togetherness culminating in a remarkable season

at Under 15s where they won promotion to the

Oxfordshire Youth League A division, the top

division for Oxfordshire football at their age

group, winning the league by five points over

Headington Youth. This season they are competing

against the likes of Oxford City and have had a

solid start to life sitting seventh place in the league

with an impressive victory over Mansfield Road.

Banbury United U18

Development:

This season saw a big step up for last season's

Under 16s MJPL side as they became the club’s

official development team, moving into the U18

MJPL. Following a trial period, a squad capable

of challenging in this new league was assembled

and they currently sit in an impressive 11th place

out of 53 teams. This season has seen the side also

enter the FA Youth Cup where they bowed out with

a very respectable performance in the 1st

qualifying round against last year’s MJPL winners,

Sutton Coldfield Town.

This season has also seen the young Puritans

record some very impressive results, none more so

than last weekend's 2-1 win away at local rivals,

Brackley Town. With no first team game the

pressure was on for the young Puritans to put a

smile on the Banbury faithful’s faces and they

certainly did just that with any win over the Saints

from up the road making any Puritans smile! It was

a top performance for the young Reds with goals

from Zach Scott and Pablo Marti-Castelllo

securing a comeback win at Croughton.

MANAGER'S UPDATE

Our fixture last week was

unfortunately cancelled falling foul to

the weather.

Finally, our successful Wildcats and Squad Girls

sessions came to an end this week for the

Christmas break. We’ll be back in January and

look forward to getting back together again.

Tomorrow, we make the trip to Wargrave for our

final fixture before the Christmas break. We take

a full squad and are hopeful of securing another

three points to close out the year.

We say farewell to Niamh Smith, Pickle Harris

and Evie Brown who are all off on their adventures

travelling the globe in January – we wish them

safe journeys. We’re still interested in hearing

from players who are keen to bring their talents to

our squad. Contact our manager, Mark.

I joined Banbury this season and it’s been great to

got a good team around us and when the weather

finally stops being rubbish, I’m looking forward to a

solid run of games and hopefully some more wins.

COMING UP...

BANBURY v CHORLEY

Tuesday November 19th K.O. 7.45pm

Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium

The visit of Chorley provides Mark Jones and his side the last

opportunity to provide some festive cheer to the Puritans faithful

as the Magpies make the long trip down from Lancashire for

United’s last home game before Christmas. Chorley are always

in and around the promotion mix in the National League North

and this year has been no different with the side firmly in the

hunt for a play-off place once more.

Last year it was the Puritans' very

own Tope Obadeyi who sunk the

Magpies with a last minute winner

for Gloucester as the Tigers

leapfrogged the Magpies on the

final day. Whilst the repercussions

may be slightly less significant, your

support would be greatly appreciated as Tope and the rest of

the side look to put a dent in the Magpies’ promotion

challenge once more
