WHY CHOOSE TIELINE
VIA OVER OTHER
REMOTE CODECS
Simple to Use with Full Remote Control
Above all, it’s so simple to use. The ViA can
be completely pre-configured prior to a sports
name just a few.
The ViA is the perfect unit for a commentary team to take to a major sporting event as
it can be used to stream live, low latency commentary for radio coverage. Plus, it can
also be associated with vision from the host broadcaster for integrated live TV sports
MANAGING CODEC
CONNECTIONS AT THE
STUDIO
The Tieline Gateway is perfect for large-scale audio distribution as well as managing
multiple incoming remote audio connections at the studio. It supports up to 16
bidirectional mono or 8 bidirectional stereo streams of IP audio in 1RU which reduces
rack space requirements. It supports hitless packet switching using SmartStream PLUS
redundant streaming and bandwidth aggregation using Fuse-IP technologies over
internet connections.
Its compact design is interoperable with all Tieline IP codecs and compatible over SIP
with all EBU N/ACIP Tech 3326, 3347 and 3368 compliant codecs and devices. The
codec is also fully AES67, ST 2110-30, ST 2022-7, Livewire+ and RAVENNA compliant
for AoIP streaming. An optional WheatNet-IP or Dante card can be purchased for
seamless operation using these protocols. The Gateway is also AMWA NMOS IS-04
and IS-05 compliant for AoIP discovery, registration and connection management,
simplifying setup and configuration of networked AoIP devices and systems. The
Ember+ control protocol is also supported.
If fewer channels are required, the Gateway 4 supports four mono connections, two
stereo connections, or a stereo and two mono connections. Like the ViA codec, all
functions on both the Gateway and Gateway 4 codecs can be fully remote controlled
using the Toolbox HTML5 Web-GUI, or the Cloud Codec Controller. This means that
your entire codec network can be managed remotely.
BROADCASTING
REMOTES FROM
MAJOR INTERNATIONAL
EVENTS
Tieline offers a complete remote solution for broadcasting at major events. Codecs can
be deployed at venues
and connect directly back
to the home studio over
the internet, or connect
Audio can be mixed with
host broadcast vision
to deliver high quality
programming with phaselocked
audio, as well as
localized commentary,
intercom and talkback.
At the studio or IBC,
TESTIMONIALS
Tieline seems to be out in front when it comes
to audio transport. Wheatnet and other AoIP
integration is a huge asset, as are the many
available algorithms and data rates. Being able
to connect point-to-point or point-to-multipoint is
another great feature, one that makes multiple
site (such as main/offsite-aux or main/booster)
operation easy. And while it seems that Tieline
has thought of everything, from time to time they
circle back with updates that add features. They
have also been very responsive to user feature
requests. Going forward, we see Tieline remaining
as a key part of our broadcast infrastructure.
It’s hard to imagine a better, more flexible and
efficient means of IP audio transport.
Broadcasting Denver
I found the Gateway was relatively simple to set
up and basically plug and play. Installation of the
Gateway has allowed us to consolidate our studio
setup and replace two codecs with one. Plus, we
can do two simultaneous remotes if we want and
still have additional capacity for Report-IT or any
other setups we may consider in the future. I like
the functionality of the ViA. It is simple to use and
really is a studio in a box. The unit seems very
sturdy and rugged, and they are very reliable.
There are lots of options to connect and there are
other really nice features like record and playback.
The ViA is very flexible for many different remote
applications.
KZSU AND TIELINE
FOR ROAD SPORTS
BROADCASTING
By Jack Wang, Assistant Chief Engineer, KZSU Engineering
Read the full article: https://tieline.com/testimonials/kzsu-and-tieline-for-road-sportsbroadcasting/
Background
KZSU 90.1FM is Stanford University’s
campus radio station. We broadcast
on 90.1FM throughout the San
Francisco Bay Area, and online at
kzsu.stanford.edu. Our radio station
broadcasts music, news, public affairs
programming, and Stanford sports.
Without a doubt, live sports coverage
of Stanford Athletics is our most
heavily listened-to form of content.
KZSU broadcasts several Stanford sports: football, baseball, basketball, volleyball,
soccer, and softball. Approximately 200 games are broadcast every year, and 70 or
so broadcasts involve traveling on the road. We generally focus our travel coverage on
the four most prominent sports: football, baseball, basketball, and volleyball. Stanford
competes in the Pac-12 conference and many of those travel locations include wellknown
universities such as Washington, Oregon, USC, UC Berkeley, Notre Dame,
UCLA, and iconic stadiums such as the Rose Bowl. Other locations include NCAA
tournament sites for playoffs and championships.
Challenges for KZSU’s Stanford Sports Coverage
KZSU is unique in that it is an FM radio station that broadcasts live sports in stereo.
Furthermore, because of KZSU’s non-commercial status, relatively small budget,
and roster of student broadcasters, we have several specific requirements when we
consider any sort of sports remote broadcasting platform:
• Affordable
• High-quality digital audio
• Portable – must fit in a carry-on case
• Reliable connectivity – IP codec w/ backup connectivity options
• Ease of Use for student broadcasters
• Durability
Tieline: The Codec Company
12

Over the past decade, telecom at
various university athletics venues
across the USA has generally
improved. KZSU also upgraded
its broadcasting kit by purchasing
the Tieline ViA portable codec and
a Gateway 4 rack mount codec
to receive remote audio feeds at
the studio. The gold standard for
any sort of broadcasting on the
Tieline platform is a wired data
connection. Unfortunately, not all stadiums have hard-wired Ethernet IP available.
Due to the inconsistencies of sports facilities, KZSU often runs into many tricky
situations in which a wireless solution is the only method for connectivity. The Tieline
ViA product line with 4G data and WiFi has helped out tremendously for various events
that KZSU has covered, in facilities where there was no wired IP solution.
Concluding Comments
KZSU is deeply committed to bringing high-quality FM audio broadcasts of Stanford
sports, and the product line by Tieline has been instrumental in delivering exceptional
quality for remote broadcasts.
Since 2011 when we purchased our first Tieline products, KZSU has now successfully
transitioned away from POTS-based remote connectivity solutions towards full digital
audio. We anticipate more wireless solutions as networks become more robust.
Tieline has been a great vendor that has provided excellent support for KZSU.
It is truly a special relationship over the past decade, one that enables KZSU,
a small, non-profit, university-based radio station to deliver such high-quality
sound using the Tieline platform.
JUVENTUS F.C.
BROADCASTS LIVE
WITH VIA
By Corrado Alvares, Technical Manager of Television and Digital Broadcast, Juventus
Football Club
My name is Corrado Alvares
and since 2016 I have held the
position of technical manager
of the Juventus football club’s
television and digital broadcast
structure.
Juventus Football Club uses
the Tieline ViA codec for live
or deferred commentary of
Mens First Team Serie A and
UEFA football matches, as well
as Juventus F.C. Women’s
First Team matches. The
configuration we normally use
includes a single commentator
only, as we rarely have a
guest as a second voice.
For stadium ambient effects
we arrange for the host
broadcaster to provide a clean
sound effects feed to attach
to the stereo auxiliary input on
the ViA. We mix the voice with
the ambient effects in stereo
that we receive separately.
The host broadcaster also
picks up the output of the ViA
and multiplexes it with the
video feed that we receive
via EI Towers or satellite.
In addition, we always use
the file recording feature on
the ViA as a backup of the
commentary.
Enrico Zambruno, journalist and commentator, Deputy
Director of Mola TV broadcasting a Juventus F.C. match with
the ViA codec
Enrico Zambruno, broadcasting from another venue with the
Tieline ViA
14

The most common IP connection we use is cellular data via a modem, with a LAN
connection also used sometimes along with WiFi when available. When stadiums
are crowded, working only with cellular SIM cards can be risky because of network
congestion. Therefore, it is useful to have other stable IP connection options for
connecting back to the studio.
We connect and stream audio using Opus encoding at the best quality possible. At the
studio we connect to our Tieline Gateway 4 codec, which integrates with our Riedel
intercom system and a Lawo audio console – all via Madi. When the ViA at a stadium
connects to the studio it receives a mix-minus feed that we manage using Lawo mixer
auxiliaries, and this feed includes all connected guests during the broadcast.
The system is stable and reliable with negligible latency and excellent audio codec
quality. Our commentators find the ViA is very convenient and streamlined for
commentary use. They are also very satisfied with the audio quality of the unit. Our
engineers and announcers also find the ViA is very intuitive to use. It has good battery
life and an excellent failsafe system which keeps the unit powered even if we lose
external power.
In summary the ViA codec is perfect. It allows me to broadcast our football matches
from anywhere on the planet that I have access to data coverage. The matrix editor
provides the flexibility to configure routing based on technical needs and commentator
requests. Plus, the Cloud Codec Controller is very useful for remote configuration of our
codecs from anywhere.
GLOBAL CRICKET
COVERAGE WITH VIA
It has been estimated that there are around 2.5 billion fans of cricket globally, which
places the sport as the second most popular after soccer. It has fanatical support
across Asia, in particular countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It is
also extremely popular in England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the West
Indies, with growing support other European countries. It is a sport that generates great
interest and massive television audiences, which is only set to grow with its inclusion
into the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles and the US co-hosting the 2024 T20 Cricket
World Cup with the West Indies.
Australian cricket broadcasters Adam Collins and Geoff Lemon travel the world
broadcasting cricket matches and use the Tieline ViA. In the following video they
explain how they use the Tieline ViA for live remote broadcasts while maximising the
ViA’s portability and flexibility to deliver the best sports coverage.
