Centerpieces will be the focus
› Floral holiday centerpieces will be shown and
discussed during a meeting of the Garden Club on
Tue Dec 12. Designers will discuss their methods
and materials. Those attending may enter a drawing
to take a centerpiece home.
Social time will begin at 12n. The program, at
12:30pm, will be followed by the club’s monthly
business meeting.
The location is the Lutheran Church (204 Wayne
Ave). Guests are welcome, and admission is free.

Holiday House Tour returns
› Mark your calendar for Thu Dec 14 and a self-guided tour showcasing six
gorgeous Haddonfield homes, Greenfield Hall (home of the Historical Society),
and the First Baptist Church of Haddonfield.
• A stunning custom located on North Drive, that is a fully automated smart
home. It was built in the center-hall Colonial style with Victorian accents. A tenfoot
tree decorated in gold and silver will greet you in the foyer.

Three-town study points
to expansion of shared
services for Fire and EMS

In the face of increasing call volumes, insufficient
volunteerism, and rising expense, the boroughs of
Haddonfield, Haddon Heights, and Barrington have been
searching for ways to better manage the delivery of their
fire and emergency medical services (EMS).
Last July, the three communities won a $75,000 Local
Efficiency Achievement Program Grant from the New
Jersey Department of Community Affairs to study the
potential for efficiencies deriving from sharing fire and
EMS services.
On Mon Dec 4, consultants from Manitou Inc., of
Peekskill NY, presented the results of that study at a
public meeting in Haddonfield.
The report paints a picture that local leaders say had
been clear to them for years: individually funding their
emergency services has led to escalating costs and
expanding, unmet need, even with thousands of unpaid
hours from volunteer professionals.

Pilates, sculpt-&-tone classes
› The fitness classes at the Presbyterian Church, conducted by Sue Heindel,
will resume on Tue Jan 2.
• Mondays and Wednesdays, from 9:15 to 10am: Pilates. A progressive series
of exercises that accommodate all fitness levels, focus on the abdominals and
back, and are designed to increase strength, flexibility, and balance.
• Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9:15 to 10am: Sculpt & Tone. Group fitness
using a non-aerobic strength- training system that combines effective exercises
based on weight training, Pilates principles, and calisthenics, with tools such
as tubes, bender balls, and glides.
Fees are $84 for 12 classes; $162 for 24; $234 for 36; $300 for 48. Fees can be
pro-rated based on personal attendance schedules.

Video promotes holiday shopping
› A new one-minute video produced by the Partnership for Haddonfield is
encouraging residents of the region to Shop Haddonfield for the Holidays.
The video shows the historic downtown on a Friday night in December,
transformed into a “sparkling wonderland” with carolers, musicians, and Mrs
Claus making the rounds.
It publicizes Candlelight Shopping thru Fri Dec 22, announces the “maiden
voyage through picturesque historic Haddonfield” of the Holly Trolley on Fri
Dec 1 – there’s a second tour on Fri Dec 22 – reminds viewers that parking is
free from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, and notes that many stores will stay
open until 8pm or later during the holiday shopping season.
The video ends with Mayor Colleen Bianco Bezich, alongside Santa and Mrs
Claus, issuing a friendly seasonal invitation: “Come Candlelight Shopping with

ChildrenSong’s holiday concert
› Prepare to celebrate the holiday season with a diverse selection of songs
that capture the spirit of wonder, joy, and delight along a holiday road.
Mark your calendar for 3:30pm on Sun Dec 10 and ChildrenSong of NJ’s
annual winter concert at the Lutheran Church: “Musical Journey on the Holiday
Road.” The choir – some 50 singers age 8 to 18 under the direction of Polly

Players frolic in Paris
› The scene: Jerry Mulligan, an American soldier
who stays in Paris after World War II with hopes of
becoming a painter, falls for the playful charms of a
young local, Lise Bouvier.
Their relationship becomes complicated,
however, when his paintings come to the attention
of an American heiress, Milo Roberts, who is clearly
interested in more than just art.
On Fri Dec 1 at 8pm, Haddonfield Plays & Players
raised the curtain on their holiday production of
An American in Paris, the 2014 Tony Award-winning
musical version of the 1951 Academy Awardwinning
film that starred Gene Kelly and Leslie
Caron, with a score by George and Ira Gershwin.
Directed by Chris Miller, this area premiere
production stars Monica Matteo in the role of Lise
Bouvier. Her previous work at Plays & Players
includes Urinetown and Cabaret.
Evening performances will be presented at 8pm
on Sat Dec 9, and 16; Thu Dec 14; and Fri Dec 8 and
15
Ṁatinees are scheduled for 3pm on Sat Dec 9 and
16; and Sun Dec 10.
Tickets for all shows are $30 and may be reserved
at HaddonfieldPlayers.com.

The founding concept for What’s On in Haddonfield, the predecessor of Haddonfield
Today, was that it would be a calendar of coming events. We wouldn’t publish stories
about what happened yesterday. Or about Borough and School Board meetings. Or
high school and town sports events. Or business executives who got promoted. Or
college kids who made the dean’s list. We’d just publicize coming events.
We launched What’s On in Haddonfield in
November 1991, four months after the Haddon
Gazette, a newspaper that had served Haddonfield
for 90 years, closed down. In its heyday, the Gazette
was packed with local news – the main reason,
perhaps, that more than half the households in
Haddonfield subscribed. (You can access many back issues of the Gazette via the
Public Library’s website – haddonfield.advantage-preservation.com – and discover all
kinds of wonderful stuff. Example: How metered parking in Haddonfield was originally a
traffic management tool – rather than a source of municipal revenue, as it is today.)
It’s been decades since a Haddonfield-based newspaper did a decent job of
reporting comprehensively on life in this town. As a community and as individuals, we
are the poorer for it.
Fortunately, the landscape is not completely barren. Founded in Collingswood
in 1906, The Retrospect is a weekly tabloid that covers a half-dozen Camden County
towns, including Haddonfield. It publishes reports of Board of Commissioners
meetings, Board of Education meetings, and
major sports events. It publishes letters to
the editor, obituaries, and public notices.
(And also blurbs about business executives
who got promoted and college kids who made the dean’s list.)
A subscription to The Retrospect costs about a dollar a week. ($60 for a one-year
subscription; $90 for two years.) The newspaper is delivered by mail each Friday – 52
weeks a year. The digital version is in your email box each Thursday.
Bottom line: You cannot keep current with what’s going on in Haddonfield unless

In its own words, NJ Pen is “a local, online news site covering the issues, events, and
people of suburban Camden County,” including Haddonfield. Founded nearly ten years
ago by Matt Skoufalos (a Haddonfield native and HMHS grad), njpen.com can be relied
on to cover the major stories in town, and to document comings and goings in the
business community, especially the food-and-beverage biz.
Although njpen.com may publish only one story about
Haddonfield per week, on average, those stories are
thoroughly researched and consistently well-written.
And long! One example: Matt’s most recent Haddonfield
article, about the LEAP report on fire and emergency
medical services – see page 14 – runs to 2,800 words.
Another: On August 11, 2023 – just one day after the
deadline for responses to the Borough’s Request for
Proposals for the Bancroft campus – NJ Pen published a 3,500-word summary of the
nine responses, with illustrations. All the Borough has told the community (via a news
story in The Retrospect in October) is that it is “in the active process of reviewing all
nine proposals.” No news is ... no news.
NJ Pen provides free access to two articles per month; to seven articles for $5 per
month; and unlimited access for $9 per month.
