2023 Summer of Learning In summer 2023, 105 Princeton students from 23 academic departments worked with University faculty, researchers from other scientific enterprises, government agencies and not-for-profit organizations on projects focused on pressing environmental challenges. Students engaged in research, public outreach, policy analysis, communications and other practical work assignments that contributed meaningfully to research and solutions in the areas of biodiversity and conservation, alternative energy, climate change, environmental policy, water, agriculture and human health. Several students contributed to the development of new technologies, while others participated in projects aimed at urban sustainability and resilience, global climate policy and environmental justice. This booklet provides an overview of student experiences during the 2023 environmental internship program. The diversity of students’ backgrounds, talents, interests and contributions is captured in the descriptions of their individual projects. For many, their internship will serve as the foundation for continuing research and academic study. 2

Students eagerly undertook research in laboratories on the Princeton University campus while others pursued fieldwork at sites in Australia, Brazil, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Alaska, California and Colorado. HMEI’s Environmental Internship Program provides opportunities for students to complement their academic interests with hands-on work experiences in the summer months and is designed to enrich students’ perspectives and prepare them as leaders. Many interns benefit from strong ties to HMEI’s Grand Challenges Program, an integrated research and teaching program designed to address critical environmental issues for the 21st century.
