A PLUS D’UNE CORDE À SON VIOLON
With her violin as her passport, she landed in
Saint Barthélemy in 2013. From the rigors of being
a teacher to her musical whimsy that sometimes
runs wild, Ombeline has become “the violin” of
Saint Barth.
In the Collin Noblet Family… there was a little girl.
At the age of just three, Ombeline made an
announcement: “I want to play the violin.” There were
already several people in her family who knew their
way around a bow: her grandfather, her aunt—who
became Ombeline’s teacher—her cousin, and then
Ombeline and her mother who took up the violin via the
Suzuki method.
Suzuki, what is that?
“It’s a method invented by Japanese violinist Shinichi
Suzuki after the Second World War: a way of applying
the same teaching no matter where you are located on
the planet. The violin becomes like a native language
for a child. One learns to speak before learning to
write, so in this case, one plays before learning solfege.
The teaching starts at the age of three, with a parent
alongside the child.” Ombeline would go on to teach the
Suzuki method transmitted to her by her aunt.

Avec son violon comme passeport, elle atterri
à Saint-Barthélemy en 2013. De la rigueur de la
professeure à la fantaisie parfois déjantée de la
musicienne, Ombeline est devenue « Le violon » de
Saint-Barth.
Dans la famille Collin Noblet je demande… la petite fille.
C’est à trois ans qu’Ombeline pose les mots : « Je veux jouer
du violon ». Dans la famille, on est nombreux à manier
l’archet : le grand-père, la tante - qui devient la professeure
de Ombeline - la cousine, et maintenant Ombeline et sa
mère qui se prête au jeu afin d’appliquer la méthode Suzuki.
Suzuki, quezako ?
« C’est une méthode inventée par le japonais Shinichi Suzuki
après la seconde guerre mondiale : un label qui applique la
même pédagogie où que l’on se trouve sur la planète.
Le violon se présente à l’enfant comme une langue
maternelle. On apprend bien à parler avant d’écrire, alors
on joue avant de se mettre au solfège. Le tout se fait dès
trois ans, avec un parent à ses côtés. » Ombeline enseignera
à son tour la méthode Suzuki transmise par sa tante.
Des études et puis… l’appel de la scène !
Ombeline fait des études en ethnomusicologie et se

School and then…the stage came calling!
Ombeline studied ethnomusicology and is passionate
about music as a way to discover different cultures. She
would apply that philosophy once she settled in Saint Barth
several years later. At the age of 30, she was a freelance
performer based in Tours, France, working on a variety of
projects, one of which would bring here to this Caribbean
island for several weeks, which morphed into years.
Two major chords: the violon and Saint Barth.
As soon as she arrived, Ombeline crossed paths with
people who would determine her destiny, such as pianist
Shirley Dern. She also remembers the first beguine that
Raymond Lédée taught her, that she in turn taught to
her students. She helped revive the association, Saint-
Barth Harmony, serving as a violin teacher for nine
years, then collaborating with the Collectivity to create
a music school for the island, becoming its director. At
the same time, her other projects continued to multiply:
musical director at the Anglican Church; playing for
weddings; duo, trio, or quartet with Christian Petat,
Robb Tito, Caroline Rivas, etc… She played Caribbean
music with local groups such as Alert 2B, Ambyans, and
Freedom. In addition, there is Maudit Triskel, her Celtic
group, where she gets to showoff playing her violin,
which can become electric…like the ambiance of their
concerts! Everything she does is under the social media
banner of ombelineviolonist-sbh.
Om’ Violin / Om’Diffusion: New Directions.
In 2023 Ombeline created two new associations, Om’
Violin and Om’Diffusion, whose goals are to promote her
career as a violinist, to teach the Suzuki method, and to
produce other artists. “I wanted to make my skills available
to others, to help the artists on the island, and to bring in
others from different places.”
Saint Barth, an endless potential.
On Saturday, kids are getting picked up from their violin
classes, or there is a wedding with chamber music in the
air. Evening comes and there is singing and dancing to
Breton songs in a bar, and the next day it’s the hymns of
a Sunday mass. That is a typical weekend in the life of
Ombeline Collin. And that’s not all! Ombeline concludes our
interview by saying, “I feel a great deal of gratitude to be
able to succeed in this profession, especially here in Saint
Barthélemy.”

passionne pour la musique comme manière de découvrir
une société. Elle le mettra en application lors de son
installation à Saint-Barth quelques années plus tard. A 30
ans, alors qu’elle était intermittente du spectacle, basée à
Tours avec des tournées très diversifiées, une rencontre la
mène jusqu’à cette île des Caraïbes pour quelques semaines
qui se transformeront en années.
Deux accords décisifs : le violon et Saint-Barth.
Dès son arrivée, Ombeline croise sur son chemin des
personnes déterminantes comme Shirley Dern. Elle se
souvient de la première biguine que lui enseigne Raymond
Lédée, qu’elle transmettra ensuite à ses élèves.
Elle redonne vie à l’association « Saint-Barth Harmony ».
Pendant neuf années elle en est la professeure de violon
puis elle contribue à la création de l’école de musique de l’île
avec la Collectivité et en devient directrice.
En parallèle, les projets se multiplient : directrice musicale de
l’église anglicane, prestations pour des mariages, duo, trio
ou quatuor avec Christian Petat, Robb Tito, Caroline Rivas,
etc… Elle expérimente avec des groupes locaux de musique
caribéenne comme Alert 2B, Ambyans ou Freedom. Et puis,
il y a Maudit Triskel, son groupe celtique où elle prend un
plaisir communicatif à dérider son violon qui se veut parfois…
électrique, comme l’ambiance des concerts ! Toutes ces
prestations sont faites dans le cadre de son entreprise
« ombelineviolonistsbh ».
Om’ Violin / Om’Diffusion : De nouvelles directions.
En 2023 Ombeline créé deux associations « Om’ Violin »
et « Om’Diffusion », avec pour objectifs de promouvoir ses
prestations de violoniste, d’enseigner la pédagogie Suzuki
et enfin produire des artistes. « Je voulais mettre mes
compétences au service des autres, aider les artistes de l’île
et en faire venir d’ailleurs. »
Saint-Barth, un potentiel infini.
Le samedi certains récupèrent leurs enfants à la fin de leur
cours de violon, d’autres sont de mariage avec des airs
de musique de chambre. Le soir venu, on sort chanter et
danser sur des tubes bretons dans un bar et le lendemain,
certains se laissent habiter par les cantiques de la messe du
dimanche.
Voici un aperçu d’un week-end dans la vie d’Ombeline Collin.
Et encore, vous n’avez rien vu ! Ombeline qui conclut notre
entretien : « Je ressens beaucoup de gratitude de pouvoir
vivre de ce métier, et ici à Saint-Barthélemy ».
