In the spring of 2023, Saint Barth’s territorial art
museum paid homage to the late Belgian artist
and sailor Stanislas Defize, an iconic figure on the
island.
Au printemps 2023, le musée territorial de Saint-
Barthélemy rendait hommage à l’artiste et
navigateur belge Stanislas Defize, devenu figure
incontournable de l’île.
Under a vivid sky, the dazzling
red of a flamboyant casts a
shadow on the pale clapboard
of a traditional cottage. In silence
at an art show, island residents are
moved by the beauty of a watercolor
painted by a man they once knew.
With almost photographic detail, the
realism and poetry in his views of the
“rock” touch all those who love the
island of Saint Barthélemy.
It’s about an island showing its
admiration for an artist who had
adopted it as his own. Stanislas Defize
docked in Gustavia for the first time
in 1980, pockets full of paints and
pencils, stolen perhaps from Hergé’s
atelier from which he escaped to
answer the call of the sea. Gone since
2017, this former student of Beaux-Arts
in Brussels spent almost 30 years on
an island that quickly accepted him
for his easy-going nature and his culture, as well as his
exceptional talent. The Wall House Museum paid tribute
to his memory in the spring of 2023 with a retrospective,
which attracted an audience moved by the work of such
an artist.
In addition to being the author of the illustrated “History of
Saint Barth,” Stanislas Defize is equally remembered for his
“Prototype” project with Yan Van Den Haute and Marc de
Rosny. Buoyantly celebrating their departure at Le Sélect
then at the port, they set sail for South America, with Defize
tossing his floating sculptures into the sea along the way. A
voyage immortalized on film with images of extravagance,
art, and humor, as well as nostalgia; the nostalgia for a lost
era in Saint Barthélemy evoked by the artist’s work.
Sous un ciel saturé, l’efflorescence
rouge d’un flamboyant fait de
l’ombre au bardage pâle d’une
case traditionnelle. Silencieuses, des
habitantes s’émeuvent devant la beauté
de l’aquarelle d’un homme qu’elles
connaissaient autrefois. Au cadrage
parfois photographique, le réalisme et
la poésie de ses vues du caillou bouleversent
quiconque porte dans son
cœur Saint-Barthélemy.
C’est la révérence d’une île à un artiste
qui lui avait jadis tiré la sienne. Stanislas
Defize accostait pour la première fois à
Gustavia en 1980, les poches pleines de
crayons et de gouaches, fauchés peutêtre
à l’atelier d’Hergé d’où il s’échappait
pour répondre à l’appel de la mer.
Disparu en 2017, cet ancien élève des
Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles séjournera
pendant près de trente ans sur une île
qui aura aussitôt adopté sa plaisanterie,
son charme et sa culture, quand ce n’était pas son talent
indiscutable. Le musée du Wall House lui aura ainsi rendu
hommage au printemps 2023, au cours d’une rétrospective
qui aura fédéré en nombre un public émotionné par l’œuvre
du peintre.
Sinon auteur de l’ouvrage illustré « Histoire de Saint-Barth »,
on se souvient aussi de Stanislas Defize pour son projet
« Prototype », avec Yan Van Den Haute et Marc de Rosny.
La célébration d’un départ au Sélect puis au port, un tour
d’Amérique du Sud et des sculptures flottantes jetées à la
mer, le tout, immortalisé dans un film aux images empreintes
d’extravagance, d’art et d’humour, de nostalgie aussi, la nostalgie
d’un visage et d’une époque de Saint-Barthélemy auxquels
l’homme renvoie.
