TC - Your most subjective series
reflect both the black and white
nudes by Patrick Demarchelier
and the colorful flash of Juergen
Teller. Is this polyvalence in your
work a means to examine the
bodies that you capture?
EL - Excellent question! I have not
yet deeply explored my thinking
about the bodies I immortalize.
I like to capture a strong and
powerful feminine energy. Whether
it concerns a nude woman or a
model in a designer dress, I aspire
to photograph women as they
exude a sense of strength and
confidence in themselves, which
makes them feel beautiful and
can even give them a certain
sensuality. I use the light to accent
their beauty, and based on the
context, I opt to use a flash or
natural light.
TC - Art object, fashion plate:
did your relationship with
photographic prints motivate you
to create Zion magazine in Saint
Barth, as an ode to art and the
image?
EL - In 2018, one year after
hurricane Irma, I decided to create
a magazine, Zion. The year of the
hurricane, very few of the local
magazines were published, which
really made me sad, as I always had
a deep affection for the magazines
on the island. At that moment I had
a desire for my own magazine… I
started to evaluate my work, that is
to say the photos I took for clients
such as swimwear and resort wear
brands, which showcased the
beauty of Saint Barth. These clients
came to the island every year to do
photo shoots for their catalogues
and their advertising campaigns, as
they were attracted by the beauty
and the reputation of the island. I
wanted to shoot not only for these
brands, but also to capture the true
essence of Saint Barthélemy; to
share my vision of this island which
watched me grow up, this island
that I love, and which never ceases
to inspire me!
TC - Tes séries les plus subjectives
renvoient parfois aux nus en noir
et blanc de Patrick Demarchelier,
jusqu’au flash provocateur de
Juergen Teller. Cette polyvalence
dans ton travail est-elle une façon
de questionner les corps que tu captures
?
EL - Excellente question ! Je n’ai pas
encore exploré en profondeur la réflexion
autour des corps que j’immortalise.
J’aime capturer une énergie féminine
forte et puissante. Qu’il s’agisse
de photographier une femme nue
ou un mannequin en robe pour une
marque de vêtements, j’aspire à
ce qu’elles dégagent un sentiment
de force et de confiance en elles et
c’est ça qui, au final, les rend belles
et peut être même leur attribue une
certaine sensualité. J’utilise la lumière
pour accentuer leur beauté et, en
fonction du contexte, j’opte soit pour
le flash soit pour la lumière naturelle.
TC - Objet d’art, vitrine de mode, ton
rapport à la photographie imprimée
aura-t-il motivé la fondation du magazine
Zion, à Saint-Barth, comme
une ode à l’art et à l’image ?
EL - En 2018, un an après le passage
du cyclone Irma, j’ai entrepris la création
du magazine «Zion». L’année du
cyclone, très peu de magazines locaux
sont parus, ce qui m’a profondément
attristé car j’ai, depuis toujours,
une profonde affection pour les magazines
de l’île. C’est à ce moment-là
que j’ai eu envie de créer mon propre
magazine. Je commençais à prendre
conscience que mon travail, c’est à
dire mes photos réalisées pour des
clients de marques de swimwear ou
de resortwear, mettaient en valeur
la beauté de Saint-Barth. Ces clients
viennent chaque année sur l’île pour
shooter les images de leurs catalogues
et de leurs campagnes, attirés
par la beauté et la renommée de l’île.
J’ai eu envie de photographier non
seulement pour ces marques individuelles,
mais également pour l’essence
propre de Saint-Barthélemy ;
montrer ma vision de cette île qui m’a
vue grandir, cette île que j’aime et qui
n’a jamais cessé de m’inspirer !
