vision. When you see something at sea, it might be a
shoal, for example, or a whale in the best of cases, and
then you are happy. I really worked on that soundtrack,
then the time came to share the film with the members
of my crew. When they saw it, they were very moved.
TC - It was primarily Yann Queffélec’s book, “La mer et
au-delà” about the life of Florence Arthaud that kindled
the need for you to make this film about your friend, the
“fiancée of the Atlantic.” Is it really a biopic?
GD - It is fiction in that it is not a documentary. But the
story I am telling is true, even though the direction takes
a certain point of view. Mine can’t be the same as that
of Philippe Poupon (NB: sailor and Géraldine Danon’s
husband) if he were to make a film about Florence
Arthaud… or if her daughter made a film about her. I
was a little sad about some of the polemics because I
wanted to create the most beautiful homage possible
for Florence and to pursue her desire to make a film.
Toward the end of her lifetime, she was working on a
biopic and it was important to her. I had the impression I
was continuing her work and her desire to tell her story.
She forged a path for an entire generation, not only of
female sailors but for women in general. By way of the
film, I share the message that meant so much to her.
Those who see the film will realize that it is an homage
to Florence and I wanted to make it as beautiful as she
was, and certainly not to degrade her in any way. In any
case, every time there is a biopic, there are naysayers.
Which is normal, as once again, everyone inevitably has
their own point of view and their own angle.
TC - And since we are talking about a biopic, you are
already working on another one…
GD - Yes, I am currently working on an adaptation
of a book by Mélissa Da Costa, “Les femmes du bout
du monde,” that I plan to shoot in New Zealand next
September. I came across this book and fell in love
with it. I quickly got to work, that is to say, writing a first
version of the script.
TC - So, we’ll see you again very soon!

beaucoup travaillé cette bande-son. Puis le moment est venu
de délivrer le film aux membres de l’équipe. Quand ils l’ont
découvert, je crois qu’ils étaient tous très émus.
TC - C’est notamment le livre de Yann Queffélec, « La mer
et au-delà sur la vie de Florence Arthaud qui a ravivé
chez vous le besoin de réaliser ce film sur votre amie, la
« fiancée de l’Atlantique ». Est-ce précisément un biopic ?
GD - Cela reste une fiction dans le sens où il ne s’agit pas d’un
documentaire. Mais ce que je raconte est vrai, bien que la
mise en scène reste une affaire de point de vue. Le mien ne
peut pas être le même que celui de Philippe Poupon (ndlr :
navigateur et époux de Géraldine Danon) s’il avait fait un film
sur Florence Arthaud… ou si sa fille avait fait un film sur elle.
J’ai été un peu peinée par certaines polémiques parce que
ma volonté était de rendre le plus bel hommage possible à
Florence et de poursuivre son désir de film. De son vivant, à
la fin de sa vie, elle travaillait sur un biopic et cela lui tenait
très à cœur. J’ai l’impression de poursuivre son œuvre et de
suivre sa volonté de transmission qui lui tenait tant à cœur.
Elle a ouvert la voie à toute une génération de skippeuses,
évidemment, mais de femmes aussi. A travers ce film, je
poursuis son message et c’est ce qui lui tenait à cœur. Ceux
qui verront le film s’apercevront que c’est un hommage à
Florence et que je suis là pour la rendre aussi belle qu’elle
était et certainement pas pour la dégrader en aucune
manière. Quoi qu’il en soit, chaque fois qu’il y a un biopic, il y a
des contradicteurs. C’est normal car, encore une fois, chacun
a son point de vue et son angle de vue, forcément.
TC - Et puisque nous parlons de Biopic, vous avez déjà un
nouveau projet en maturation….
GD - Effectivement, je travaille actuellement à l’adaptation
du livre de Mélissa Da Costa, « Les femmes du bout du
monde » que je devrais tourner en Nouvelle-Zélande au
mois de septembre de l’année prochaine. Je suis tombée sur
ce livre qui a été un coup de cœur pour moi. Je me suis très
vite attelée, cet été notamment, à l’écriture d’une première
version.
