After a first successful projection in Cannes last
May, the film Flo, directed by Géraldine Danon,
was released in France in November 2023. A
director and actress, she has created a cinematic
telling of the life of her friend, celebrated sailor
Florence Arthaud, who was killed in an accident
in 2015.
Après une première projection à succès à Cannes
au mois de Mai, le film « Flo » réalisé par Géraldine
Danon est sorti nationalement en novembre
2023. La réalisatrice et actrice y met en images
avec bienveillance la vie de son amie, la grande
navigatrice Florence Arthaud, disparue en 2015
dans un accident.

The Commuter - What was the response to your
highly anticipated film about the “fiancée of the
Atlantic?”
Gñeraldine Danon - We got a standing ovation at
the avant-première. It was a very moving screening
in Cannes on May 19. The boat was there especially
for the occasion, anchored right in front of the
Palais des Festivals. It was an exceptional moment,
especially as the film was presented in the official
selection, out of competition, at the Cannes Film
Festival. It was the first time I showed the film to
the public; then we did a tour starting in Saint Barth
on August 4, as part of a mini festival organized
by AJOE. That was a very special evening as I am
very attached to the island where we often arrive
by boat. I have known it since my childhood and it’s
almost like home for me.
The film was also selected for the closing night at
the Angoulême Film Festival in late August. Another
success with a great response! Even before the
film came out nationally, we were reassured by
the extraordinary reaction that we got during
the summer tour, which was really great! The film
met with a lot of fervor and compassion. It’s the
phase when the film no longer belongs to me as
I present it to the public, so there is always a little
apprehension, but I was overwhelmed by the
reaction of the audience.
TC - How did your crew perceive the film once it
was completed?
GD - They were very proud as they should be since
they really gave it their best! They discovered a
new dimension during the projection: between the
end of the filing and the moment they saw it, there
had been a lot of work done in terms of editing and
mixing. One thing that really impressed me during
my ocean navigation was the sound. I worked with
a sound engineer and a post-production team
with a mixer, sound effects, etc. We created a
soundtrack that achieved something very powerful,
faithful to reality. When you are at sea, your ear is
zoomed in; you hear certain things, your sense of
observation expands and deepens as your survival
depends on having extremely sharp hearing and

très attendu sur la « Fiancée de l‘Atlantique » ?
Géraldine Danon - Dès Cannes, le 19 mai, nous avons
vécu une très belle avant-première, ovationnée. Ce
fut une projection très émouvante. Le bateau était
revenu pour l’occasion. Il était juste devant le Palais des
festivals. Nous avons vécu un beau moment, d’autant
que le film a été présenté en sélection officielle hors
compétition au Festival de Cannes. C’était la première
fois que je montrais le film en public. Ensuite, nous
avons lancé la tournée en commençant par St Barth
le 4 août, dans le cadre du mini festival de cinéma
organisé par l’Ajoe. Ce fut un moment très particulier
pour moi car je suis très attachée à cette île où nous
venons souvent en bateau. Je la connais depuis mon
enfance et c’est un peu chez moi.
Le film a aussi été sélectionné et présenté en clôture
du festival d’Angoulême fin août. De gros temps forts
avec un retour incroyable ! Avant même la sortie,
nous étions rassurés par l’accueil extraordinaire que
nous avions reçu durant cette tournée qui a été un
régal ! Le film est accueilli avec beaucoup de ferveur
et de sympathie. C’est une phase à partir de laquelle
le film ne m’appartient plus puisque c’est le moment
où je le délivre au public. Donc on a toujours un peu
d’appréhension mais j’ai été comblée par les réactions
du public.
TC - Et comment vos équipes ont-elles perçu le film
une fois abouti ?
GD - Les membres étaient très fiers et ils avaient
raison car toutes et tous ont donné le meilleur ! Ils ont
découvert une dimension nouvelle lors de la projection :
entre la fin du tournage et le moment où ils l’ont vu, nous
avons fait un gros travail au montage, au mixage. Ce qui
m’avait beaucoup marquée lors de mes navigations en
mer, c’était le son. J’ai travaillé avec un ingénieur du son
et une équipe de post-production, mixeur, bruiteur, etc.
On a fait une bande son permettant d’arriver à quelque
chose de très fort, de fidèle. Quand on est en mer, on
a l’oreille qui zoome ; on entend plus certaines choses,
les sens de l’observation se dilatent, s’approfondissent,
puisqu’il en va de notre survie d’avoir l’ouïe développée
et la vision développée. Quand on voit un remous sur
la mer, cela peut être un haut-fond, par exemple. Ou
