WOMEN IN THE SPOTLIGHT / FEMMES À L’HONNEUR
Pati Guyot
in Saline, Poupette has provided women on the island with
a way of life, a sense of joy. For Poupette, it’s the alchemy
between “here and her,” the island and the woman, with
a boho-chic closet full of colors and distinctive prints;
it’s about freedom, lightness in the dead of winter, the
Mediterranean, The Hamptons, and also Palm Beach, but
above all, Saint Barth. “What makes me happy, is to see
my products evolve on the island. It’s Saint Barth that leads
me, and I faithfully allow myself to be guided.”
An island logo.
On a line stretched outside, t-shirts dance in the sunlight and
the shadows. It was the late 80’s in a garage in Colombier;
Pati Guyot has fallen asleep in front of her silk screen
printing press. Over the past week, the logo she invented
in that same garage has gone viral. Empty pots of dye litter
the workbench. “I remember, black was the hot color; I had
to buy all the tints from Berenger and mix them together.
When dry, the result was a dark gray… Even so, everybody
wanted that logo, so simple yet so powerful.”
Little did Pati know back then that an iconic island brand
had been born. St Barth French West Indies has flooded
the island ever since, worn by those who live there as well
as those who only visit It was a successful gamble for a
woman who dreamed of making a living with her brushes,
who is a painter first and foremost, and who knew how to
blend her art with fashion, in an unpretentious way.
