Life’s what you 

bake it! 

Meet Marisa van der Walt ... the cookie 

queen who’s baking her way to happiness – 

one beautiful batch at a time.

Marisa van der Walt is one of those 

people who seem to have an endless 

reserve of energy and creativity. She’s 

always on the move, making the most 

of every minute, from sewing clothes 

and interior decorating to throwing 

special occasion parties. And now, 

baking cookies. 

Her love for all things artsy began 

at an early age. As a child she could 

always be found colouring, designing 

dresses, cooking and redecorating 

anything that might be considered 

even a tad too drab. 

It was only a matter of time before 

one of her true passions was ignited 

when she started learning to sew 

from her gran, a skilled seamstress. 

By the time Marisa was in Grade 4, 

she was already stitching her way 

to success. Fast forward a few years, 

and she made her very own matric 

farewell dress! 

“After graduation, my best friend and 

I decided to chase our dreams and 

open our own design studio. And so, 

Red Carpet Couture was born. 

“We specialised in wedding dresses 

and evening gowns, with a particular 

focus on matric farewell dresses. 

Over the following 10 years, we also 

crafted outfits for mothers of the 

bride, bridesmaids, and occasionally, 

gowns for beauty pageants and 

fashion shows.” 

For Marisa, the real joy lay in the 

intricate handwork, especially 

beading, and in connecting with her 

clients to create the perfect design. 

Yet, her bustling career took a pause 

when she decided to focus on her 

growing family. At the time, she and 


her husband, Jaco, welcomed their 

second child into the world. And so 

she continued with smaller projects, 

such as designing dance costumes for 

a close friend’s daughter and crafting 

a ballet tutu here and there. 

“Being a mom was - and is - a full-time 

job. Especially after we had our third 

child. But, with that said, I like being 

busy and I don’t think I’ll ever have 

enough time for all the things I want 

to do and learn.” 

This was up until a few years ago 

when fate intervened in the form of a 

back fusion operation that confined 

Marisa to her bed for six weeks. With 

plenty of time on her hands, she 

delved into her interests through 

Pinterest (one of her absolute fave 

sites). One of which was sugar cookies 

and royal icing. 

This sweet combination of baking 

and decorating intrigued her, and 

she took the plunge. She found a 

beginner class online and never 

looked back. The royal icing monster 

had sunk its teeth into her, and she 

was hooked. 

Now, Marisa specialises in sugar 

cookies decorated with royal icing 

and has opened her own baking 

business – Cookies and Marisa. She 

can craft these delectable treats 

for any occasion, in various sizes 

and themes. From plain cookies to 

elaborately detailed flooded cookies, 

she can do it all. 

She believes in going the extra mile 

for her clients, ensuring that each 

cookie is a work of art. And if a cookie 

Marisa’s party favour pick this x-mas 

doesn’t meet her high standards, it 

simply won’t leave her house. 

Beyond her technical skills, what truly 

sets Marisa apart is her love and care 

for what she does. Baking is one of 

her love languages! And like any artist, 

she’s had her share of flops, from 

minor mishaps to late-night butter 

bleed rescues. But her philosophy is 

simple: never give up, keep practicing, 

and learn from your mistakes. 

When asked about her dreams for her 

cookie business, this loving, fun and 

vibrant baker keeps it down-to-earth. 

She’s simply enjoying the present 

and relishing the time with her family 

as her children go through school. 

Although the future is uncertain, she’s 

open to the possibilities it may bring. 

At heart, Marisa is a family woman 

who finds her greatest happiness at 

home, surrounded by her husband 

and children Jaco Jr, Isabella, 

and Carla. She firmly believes in 

maintaining a balanced life, allocating 

her time to God, her family, her home, 

and, of course, her beloved cookies. 

As for her hobbies, Marisa cherishes 

relaxation moments on the couch 

with good music and a glass of wine. 

And, she loves to unwind with a bit of 

shopping whenever she has enough 

energy left after days of keeping to a 

tight schedule. 

Her journey is still unfolding, but one 

thing is clear: Marisa’s passion and 

creativity are bound to take her to 

some sweet new heights.

• Make or buy a little box with each guest’s name on it. This will also be their 

place cards for seating. 

• Put a small paper card and pencil inside. You can make and decorate this in 

whichever way you like. 

• Each guest must write a note during the dinner for their Secret Santa or the 

person sitting next to them. 

• It would be even better if the paper card is substituted with a sugar cookie that 

looks like a little piece of paper, and an edible marker. After you’ve received your 

message, you can enjoy the cookie!

and practice new recipes to avoid 

last-minute disappointments. 

• Think of a theme for your 

table and do the decorations

garden on each plate can also 

do the trick. 

• Prepare whatever you can 

beforehand. It just makes your 

day easier. 

• Think of something fun the 

whole group can do together, like 

a game around the dinner table.

More than just a pretty face ... Elaine Boshoff, one of the beauty industry’s fave 

blonde bombshells, is a business-savy creative who’s going places! 

But, she’s not just another pretty face. Sweep away the 

gorge blonde locks (always styled to a tee), and you’ll find a 

business-savvy creative with an eye for success. 

Elaine Boshoff has been in the industry for almost 

two decades now, half of which she was part of the 

driving force behind EA Academy. And now, she’s one 

of five directors of a budding makeup brand called 

Smink Emporium. 

Elaine’s fascination with beauty and cosmetics was sparked 

as a little girl when her mother used to bring home expired 

goodies for testing from her pharmacy job. 

“I honed my skills on Barbie dolls and friends’ hair … 

without the help of YouTube,” she proudly exclaims, “… 

eventually delving into makeup courses and extra training 

as I got older. But, before I could pursue it full time, I first 

had to hustle in the corporate world for a while.” 

By the time she entered the beauty industry, she knew how 

to do her own admin and books, which is always a plus! A 

few years later, she started EA Academy with her high school 

bestie Antoinette de Beer.

Today the studio is Elaine’s creative haven. Situated in the 

heart of Krugersdorp, it offers a range of services from 

makeup and hairstyling to teaching classes and providing 

free foundation testing. And she still does a jolly jive each 

time she gets to beautify a client’s appearance.

While Elaine loves both hair and makeup, her heart leans 

towards the artistic realm of creative glamour makeup.

Classic competition for creative makeups. 

Having worked with big names like Karen Zoid, Miss 

South Africa Natasha Joubert, and power couple LeeAnn 

Liebenberg and Danny K, Elaine’s ultimate wish list includes 

Demi Lee Moore and The Kardashians. 

Although she’s been a huge MUD makeup cheerleader 

for around a decade now, she is excited about her Smink 

Emporium venture and dreams of seeing the product on 

every cosmetics shelf. 

“Even though I love what I do, I’ve been dreaming of doing 

more than just makeup. I wanted to be a part of the making 

and building of a professional makeup brand. The best 

part? I get to use my very own products on my clients. I 

mean, how cool is that?” 

But her aspirations don’t stop here. Elaine not only excels in 

the beauty industry but also aspires to become a life coach, 

inspiring others to pursue their goals. 

Despite life’s challenges and the recent loss of her beloved 

gran, Elaine remains motivated by her strong will, positive

pet policies, and you need to confirm that non-human 

family members are welcome and catered for. 

Sort out your equipment Every pet, from a budgie to 

a boxer, needs their own special equipment. This starts 

with what they’re actually going to travel in, to where 

they’re going to sleep, to food and containers, to toys. If 

you’re going to take your pet away with you, it is crucial 

to ensure that they’re going to be safe and comfortable 

for every step of the journey. In transit, make sure that 

they are crate-trained in their own area of security to 

ensure that you can drive safely and ensure that you 

have all the leashes, collars or cages sorted for when 

you arrive. 

Pack a pet specific supply kit Have a chat with your 

vet to make sure you have everything necessary in a kit 

for your trip. A general first-aid kit, and then also some 

additional items you may need along the way such 

as waste bags. Pet pit stops are tough to schedule, so 

rather be prepared. Also consider snacks and hydration 

along the way. Pets can easily get dehydrated when 

travelling, so make sure you pack extra water. And toys. 

Don’t forget toys. 

Sort out their identification Life is unpredictable. And 

life on the open road is even more so. An unfamiliar 

place far from home is the very worst place to lose your 

pet. Before you leave make sure they’re easy to find in 

the worst case scenario. Sort out your microchipping 

and make sure their collar tags are up to date. Make it as 

easy as possible for a good Samaritan to return them to 

you in case they do a runner. 

There’s no place like home Yes, you’re going away, 

but your pet doesn’t understand this – all they know 

is the home they live in. Pack their favourite toys, 

blankies, bowls and beds so that once you reach your 

destination they have all the comforts of home around 

them so that they can relax too. 

Holidays can be the best days, and memories made 

that include fur family members are priceless. All it takes 

is some extra planning and patience to make sure your 

time away is an unforgettable experience for all the 

right reasons.

Indoor plant of the month 

Don’t be surprised to see 

hydrangeas standing in as indoor plants 

for the festive season. Also known as Christmas 

roses, pot hydrangeas are perfect for decoration, 

as a thank-you gift or for under the tree. Once it has 

paid its dues indoors, a pot hydrangea can be planted 

out into a patio pot or in the garden to continue growing 

and flowering. The variety being used as an indoor starter 

is Hydrangea ‘Magical Revolution’ that blooms for up to 

six months, from summer through to autumn. It is compact 

with a mature height of 80cm and large flower heads that 

change colour as they age. Cut off the old flowers directly 

under the flower head. As an indoor plant it needs 

bright, indirect light, a cool room and consistently 

moist soil. Feed with a liquid fertiliser once a 

month. When planting out, choose a position 

with semi-shade and plant in composted 

soil that drains well.

Herb of the month 

Thai Basil Siam Queen is spicier than normal 

sweet basil, with a strong clove scent. Use it to 

flavour Thai cuisine, curries and stir fries. It is also 

a beautiful bushy plant, growing 40 to 50cm 

tall, with large green leaves, purple flowers and 

stems. Like other basils, however, it grows easily 

from seed and likes the same conditions - fertile 

soil that drains easily and up to six hours of sun, 

preferably morning sun and afternoon shade. 

Seed can be sown directly into the soil where 

the basil is to grow or germinated in a seed 

tray which is easier to manage. Mist the seed 

trays until the seeds sprout then feed the newly 

germinated seedlings with Margaret Roberts 

Organic Supercharger which contains macro and 

micronutrients. Transplant when the plants are 

large enough to handle and space 20cm apart. 

You can start harvesting when the plants have

We’re planting ... Coleus TrailBlazer, which is a first of its kind trailing coleus for 

cascading out of containers and hanging baskets or as a spreading filler for garden 

beds in semi-shade. Glory Road has vivid red and burgundy leaves in the shape 

of a maple leaf with a bright green edge. Road Trip has rounded velvety leaves in 

deep burgundy with a glowing pink centre and scalloped green edging. It flowers 

very late in the season, or not at all, which allows the plant to put all its energy into 

producing masses of colourful leaves that can spread up to 60cm. These easy to 

grow, low maintenance plant adapts to different light levels from full sun to 

semi-shade and needs only regular watering. Plants in containers or baskets do

Garden tasks for the festive season 

• If you are going away, move plants 

in pots and hanging baskets out of 

the direct sun if possible. Place the 

pots in saucers filled with gravel so 

that water doesn’t drain away. 

• Fertilise flowering plants to give 

them oomph to keep on flowering 

during the midsummer heat. 

• During hot, dry spells water deeply 

and regularly. Renew mulch to keep 

beds cool. 

• There is still time to sow marigolds, 

alyssum, bedding dahlias, California 

poppies portulaca and nasturtiums. 

• Don’t fertilise the lawn if you are 

going away. When returning from 

holiday, reduce the height of the 

lawn gradually. 

• Continue with succession planting 

of tomatoes, beans, carrots, beetroot, 

lettuce, and spinach or Swiss chard. 

• December is peak time for pests. Use 

organic or biological sprays to control 

aphids, white fly and red spider.
