The originators of Tortoise Creek, Melvyn and Janie Master,<br />

set out to create a range of classic varietals that could be<br />

bought and enjoyed immediately. Current winemaker, Xavier<br />

Roger, continues the philosophy with a fistful of easy, soft,<br />

fruity wines with supple characters that can charm the birds<br />

out of the trees. These are the perfect wines for people with<br />

limited space for storage. None of these wines have hard or<br />

excessive tannins and the whites are all ripe and opulent. Like<br />

the Californian wines of the same name, they are made for<br />

today and should not be ordered to be laid down or cellared<br />

for longer than a year after shipment.<br />

Louis Mandeville-Peirière works closely with Thierry Coulon,<br />

owner of the remarkable Paul Sapin winery, who bottles these<br />

wines. The intention of the partners is to provide a full range<br />

of southern and classic varietals, all capable of modest ageing<br />

and development in the bottle. As young wines, immediately<br />

after shipping, they are invariably rather dumb and show little<br />

expanded flavour. With a year in bottle, they begin to ripen and<br />

fill out. However, they cannot provide the substance found in<br />

the wines of single vineyard estates, but they are invariably<br />

clean, wholesome and surprisingly elegant.<br />

4597 Pinot Noir, Vin de Pays d’Oc, 2007 7 8 The market says plant Pinot Noir and growers follow that<br />

Domaine Peirière advice. It does not really do well here. This is attractive, but will<br />

never develop any great personality.<br />
