The originators of Tortoise Creek, Melvyn and Janie Master,
set out to create a range of classic varietals that could be
bought and enjoyed immediately. Current winemaker, Xavier
Roger, continues the philosophy with a fistful of easy, soft,
fruity wines with supple characters that can charm the birds
out of the trees. These are the perfect wines for people with
limited space for storage. None of these wines have hard or
excessive tannins and the whites are all ripe and opulent. Like
the Californian wines of the same name, they are made for
today and should not be ordered to be laid down or cellared
for longer than a year after shipment.
Louis Mandeville-Peirière works closely with Thierry Coulon,
owner of the remarkable Paul Sapin winery, who bottles these
wines. The intention of the partners is to provide a full range
of southern and classic varietals, all capable of modest ageing
and development in the bottle. As young wines, immediately
after shipping, they are invariably rather dumb and show little
expanded flavour. With a year in bottle, they begin to ripen and
fill out. However, they cannot provide the substance found in
the wines of single vineyard estates, but they are invariably
clean, wholesome and surprisingly elegant.
4591 Chardonnay, Vin de Pays d’Oc, 2007 8 8 Still has potential to ripen and broaden its flavours.
Domaine Peirière
4592 Sauvignon Blanc, Vin de Pays d’Oc, 2007 10 10 Lovely wine. Clean, sharp, vitally youthful and full flavours.
Domaine Peirière
4593 Viognier, Vin de Pays d’Oc, 2007 9 10 Delicious. One of the earlier plantings of a Viognier vineyard,
Domaine Peirière the wine has full flavour and body.
4594 Merlot, Vin de Pays d’Oc, 2007 8 8 Medium weight. Stringy tannins. Cherries and plums.
Domaine Peirière
4595 Cabernet Sauvignon, Vin de Pays d’Oc, 2007 8 9 Rather lean, still shows little weight of fruit. It will never be full
Domaine Peirière bodied.
4596 Syrah, Vin de Pays d’Oc, 2007 8 8 Very fine classical notes. Touch of chocolate, fig, rose
Domaine Peirière blossom and cassis.
4597 Pinot Noir, Vin de Pays d’Oc, 2007 7 8 The market says plant Pinot Noir and growers follow that
Domaine Peirière advice. It does not really do well here. This is attractive, but will
never develop any great personality.
