<strong>Wine</strong>s designated by the Lot Numbers 4439 – 4444 all come from a producer in the deepest south-eastern corner of Italy, from an<br />

area referred to as the “Heel of Italy”. The terroir is moderately rich, with soil made up of degraded volcanic outflows. Over the millennia,<br />

that has become mixed with sand and limestone, providing a perfect terroir for the unique local grape varieties. All of the wines, both<br />

white and red, have wonderfully elevated concentration and flavours. The red wines often offer a touch of residual sugar and have huge<br />

colour, while the early maturing whites are full of flavour and full-bodied structure.<br />

4439 Malvasia Bianca Salento, IGT 2007 10 10 Drink while fresh.<br />

4440 Negroamaro Salento, IGT 2006 10 10 Quite ready.<br />

4441 Primitivo Salento, IGT 2006 9 9 A monster in sheep’s clothing. Very easy.<br />

4442 Primitivo di Manduria, DOC 2006 8 9 Simple but huge. Rich, opulent grape flavours.<br />

4443 Salice Salentino Riserva, DOC 2005 8 9 Marvellous. Very fine balance.<br />

4444 Cirò Classico, DOC 2006 7 7 Hardly changed in two years. Still rich and full, yet it does<br />

need more time.<br />

4445 Pinot Grigio, DOC Alto Adige, 2007 10 10 The essence of Pinot Grigio lies in its fresh fruit and zesty<br />

E. Von Keller acidity. To capture these qualities, it must be enjoyed when<br />

young. Drink remaining bottles soon.<br />

4446 Pinot Bianco, DOC Alto Adige 2006 10 10 One of the best examples of this relatively rare vine. Close to<br />

losing its grip.<br />

4447 Soave Classico, DOC 2007 10 10 Very light. Tastes a little like an oriental pear. If the colour is<br />

still light, enjoy it now.<br />

4448 Valpolicella Classico, DOC 2007 10 10 Should have been opened by now.<br />

4449 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, 2004 7 7 Thick, sweet tasting fruit, but dry in the mouth. Powerful<br />

DOC prune and plum nose. Long life.<br />

4450 Bardolino, DOC 2007 10 10 Very small and thin. Has lost a lot of its early energy.<br />

4451 Merlot delle Venezie, IGT 2007 10 10 Open this year, no benefit in holding on.<br />

4452 Valpolicella Classico 2005 8 8 Luscious notes of figs and prunes. Lovely, full flavoured<br />

Superiore “Ripasso”, DOC and soft as velvet.<br />

4453 Orvieto Classico, DOC 2007 10 10 Use now before it begins to oxidize.<br />

4454 Sangiovese Toscano Rosso, IGT 2007 8 8 Ready to drink now, more for its fruit than its weight.<br />

4455 Chianti, DOCG 2007 8 8 Soft and supple tannin. Good fruit. Ready.<br />

4456 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, DOC 2007 7 8 Rough and tannic. Very earthy and agricultural. Great wine<br />

with a rustic country stew.<br />

4457 Vernaccia di San Gimignano, DOCG 2007 10 10 When old, this is a horrible wine. So don’t delay, enjoy it now!<br />

4458 Chianti Colli Senesi, DOCG 2007 7 7 Still needs more time.<br />

4459 Morellino di Scansano, DOC, 2007 7 7 A recently popular area with top growers. Everyone seems<br />

Tenuta Le Preselle to be buying land here, and interest in the palate shows why.<br />

Fine balance. The Sangiovese characters are nicely lifted.<br />

4460 Chianti Classico, DOCG, Fagnano 2006 7 8 Lovely, ready now.<br />

4461 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, DOCG, 2005 7 7 This is still heading for maturity, but taking its time. Don’t worry,<br />

Cerraia it will arrive and all of the tannins will become much easier.<br />
