Goals Need Action
By Aracely Argueta
@aracelylifestyle
Another year is
approaching, and
with it, we set new
resolutions. Have you ever
asked yourself why you have
yet to reach your New Year’s
goals?
We believe that when the
year begins, everything we
envision for the future will
happen by magic, or only
because we wished for it
while eating 12 grapes on
New Year’s Eve, or because
we ran around the block with
a suitcase. These traditions
we follow are just pure
superstitions.
We’ve heard the phrase: “If
you wish for something with
all your heart, the universe
conspires to make it yours.”
Well, that is not entirely true.
We have to take action on
that wish. We accomplish
our dreams with discipline,
perseverance, and hard work.
How do we meet our goals?
First, we must set realistic
goals. And then, we must have
a plan, set clear objectives,
get organized, be disciplined,
and be confi dent that we can
achieve those goals.
One of the reasons we
can’t keep our New Year’s
resolutions is the fact that we
began with unrealistic goals
that weren’t specifi c. We did
not think of a plan to achieve
them; we needed better
direction and may have set too
many goals simultaneously.
To achieve our goals, we
must set a day for planning.
Find a place where you can
be without interruptions and
where you can get inspired.
Write down your goals. Create
a vision board of your dreams
with images from a magazine
or photographs. Hang it in
a visible place, and set a
date for achieving each goal.
Having well-defi ned objectives
is essential as this helps us
drive where we want to go.
¡Get started today! Be
consistent. Discipline and
perseverance will always win
over talent.
Otro año se aproxima,
y con ello, nuevos
propósitos que nos
planteamos en la vida. ¿Te
has preguntado por qué nunca
alcanzas a cumplir tus metas
de Año Nuevo?
Creemos que cuando
comienza el año todo lo que
visualizamos para el futuro
ocurrirá por arte de magia, o
solo porque lo deseé mientras
comía mis 12 uvas en la
nochevieja, o porque corrí
con la maleta por todo el
vecindario, puras
supersticiones.
¿Han escuchado la frase
que dice, “deséalo
tanto tanto que el universo
no tendrá mas remedio que
dártelo”? Pues no es del todo
cierto. Al deseo le tenemos
que poner acción. Los sueños
se ejecutan con disciplina,
constancia y trabajo.
¿Cómo cumplir nuestras
metas? Para establecer
metas tenemos que ser
realistas con lo que queremos
lograr y debemos planifi car
y fijar objetivos claros con
organización, disciplina y la
Sesión de Mapa de Sueños de Las Musas. @elcentroLA
Alcanzar Metas Requiere Acción
confi anza de que se pueden
lograr.
Algunas de las razones por
las que no cumplimos nuestro
propósito de Año Nuevo es
porque fi jamos metas que
son poco realistas, no son
específi cas, no hay un plan
para conseguirlas, les falta
enfoque y porque fi jamos
muchos propósitos a la vez.
Para cumplir tus metas,
dedícale un día especialmente
a la planifi cación. Encuentra
un lugar donde puedas estar
sin interrupciones y donde
puedas inspirarte. Escríbe
tus metas. Crea un mapa de
tus sueños con imágenes
recortadas de alguna revista,
fotografías, y ponlo en un
lugar visible. Ponle la fecha de
cuando quieres lograrlo. Es
muy importante tener objetivos
bien defi nidos, ya que esto
nos ayuda a guiar a donde
queremos llegar.
¡Empieza hoy! Sé
constante. La disciplina y la
constancia siempre le ganarán
Holiday Travel Tips
With the holiday season fast approaching, prepare for
the busy airport traffi c. If you’re fl ying from the Louis
Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, airlines
recommend that passengers arrive at least 2 hours before their
domestic fl ight departure. The earlier you arrive, the more you can
enjoy the airport’s great restaurants, bars, and store options.
The Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport
ranked number three Best Large Airport in USA TODAY 10Best
Readers’ Choice Awards. The airport ranked high on the list,
thanks to its spacious, modern terminal with more than 40 food
and drink options, including local favorites like Café du Monde,
Emeril’s Table, Leah’s Kitchen, and Bar Sazerac. Additionally, the
airport offers free internet, in-seat charging, and live music in the
Jazz Garden, making waiting at Louis Armstrong New Orleans
International Airport much more pleasant.
We hope the following tips make your Christmas and New Year
trips more enjoyable. Happy Holidays!
Valuable tips for
Holiday travel:
1. Use the MyTSA App to check the average
TSA security line times when traveling. Airlines
recommend arriving at least 2 hours before your
domestic fl ight departure, but airport traffi c may be
unusual during the holidays, so be prepared and
arrive earlier.
2. Reserve airport parking in any of the four
parking facilities at least 24 hours before your
travel online at park.fl ymsy.com to guarantee
parking in your preferred parking facility. Valet
parking is also available and offers a premium
option for those wanting a higher level of service.
3. Take advantage of the MSY Guest Pass, which
is free and allows you to go through security and
spend more time with family and friends traveling
through the airport. To get the MSY Guest Pass,
register online at fl ymsy.com/msy-guest-pass at
least 24 hours in advance. You can pick up your
MSY Guest Pass at the Customer Service desk on
the fi rst fl oor between doors 2 and 3, and you must
present an offi cial ID. The same travel rules apply
to go through the TSA security line.
4. Consider the new nonstop fl ights with Air
Canada and Breeze for your next trip. Air Canada
recently announced its direct fl ight from New
Orleans to Montreal, while Breeze Airlines added
Ft. Myers as a direct fl ight destination to Florida.
¡Felices Fiestas!

Spirit of ’76 Chapter NSDAR Honors
Gálvez and His Soldiers
On Sunday afternoon,
November 5, 2023, the
Spirit of ’76 Chapter of the
National Society Daughters
of the American Revolution
erected a plaque in St. Louis
Cemetery #1 to honor the 265
Louisiana Patriots who fought
in the Revolutionary War under
General Bernardo de Gálvez.
Most of the patriots are buried
in St. Louis Cemetery #1.
Just this year, the Daughters
have placed more emphasis
on Gálvez and the soldiers
who fought under Gálvez
and are recognizing them
as patriots in their national
database. Members of Spirit
of ’76 Chapter are proud of
the Spanish heritage of New
Orleans and support and
promote it. The Patriot Plaque
dedication was the culmination
of over a year’s work in
research, National approvals,
and planning the event.
This dedication is part of the
America250! Celebration, a
national endeavor to celebrate
the 250th anniversary of the
Revolutionary War. A member
of the National America250!
Committee attended the
ceremony.
The Spirit of ’76 Chapter
Regent, Lee Pitre Lynch, was
By Trudy Oswald
Mistress of Ceremonies.
Distinguished guests included
the New Orleans Spanish
Honorary Consul, Maria Isabel
Page, who supported this
event and the Louisiana State
DAR Regent, Cheryl Gott.
Additionally, the Governor
of La Luisiana Chapter of
the Granaderos y Damas de
Gálvez, members from 10 other
Louisiana DAR Chapters, and
DAR Chapter representatives
from four other states were
present at the ceremony.
After Trumpeter, Noreen
McMahan, played The Last Post,
Spirit of ’76 Members Nanette
Davis, Marline Kelly, and Linda
Davis Morrisson read the
plaque aloud in English. Father
Edwin L. Gros, S.J., followed
with the Spanish translation of
the plaque and then, blessed
the plaque in both English and
Spanish. The ceremony ended
with the trumpeter playing Taps.
At the luncheon following
the Cemetery Dedication at
the Metairie Country Club,
70 attendees were treated
to Robert Gray Freeland’s
impersonation of Gálvez in full
uniform. He answered several
questions from the audience as
Gálvez.
Spirit of ’76 Chapter NSDAR honra a Gálvez y sus soldados
El domingo 5 de noviembre de
2023 por la tarde, el Capítulo
Espíritu del 76 de la Sociedad
Nacional Hijas de la Revolución
Americana erigió una placa en el
Cementerio #1 de St. Louis para honrar
a los 265 Patriotas de Luisiana que
lucharon en la Guerra Revolucionaria
bajo el mando del General Bernardo de
Gálvez. La mayoría de los patriotas están
enterrados en el cementerio número 1
de St. Louis.
Precisamente este año, las Hijas han
puesto más énfasis en Gálvez y los
soldados que lucharon bajo Gálvez y
los están reconociendo como patriotas
en su base de datos nacional. Los
miembros del Capítulo Spirit of ’76 están
orgullosos de la herencia española
de Nueva Orleans y la apoyan y
promueven. La dedicación de la Patriot
Plaque fue la culminación de más de
un año de trabajo en investigación,
aprobaciones nacionales y planifi cación
del evento.
Esta dedicación es parte de
America250! Celebration, una
iniciativa nacional para celebrar el 250
aniversario de la Guerra Revolucionaria.
Un miembro del comité América250
Nacional estuvo presente en la
ceremonia.
Noreen McMahan, interpretara The
Last Post, las miembros de Spirit of ’76
Nanette Davis, Marline Kelly y Linda
Del Alto Valle, Coffee with Purpose
By AnaMaría Bech
@anamabech
It is uncommon to meet an entrepreneur
with Paola Barona’s passion. Her
dedication to her product, Del Alto Valle
Coffee, clearly goes beyond creating a
successful company. Barona has a fulltime
corporate job and dedicates her free
afternoons and weekends to importing,
promoting, selling, and distributing fresh
Colombian coffee roasted by herself in
New Orleans.
On a trip to a farm in the central
mountain range of the Andes, in the
town of Ulloa, Colombia, Barona became
interested in the process it takes behind
enjoying an excellent cup of coffee.
Thousands of families in Colombia depend
on coffee farms. Hundreds of families on
one farm depend on Del Alto Valle Coffee
to continue working and surviving.
That is where Barona’s motivation comes
in. She created Del Alto Valle Coffee and
seeks to position it well in the American
market to care for the farmers. Their beans
come from a single farm and make a
gourmet and artisanal coffee packaged in 4
presentations: Original, MadreMonte, Pink
Bourbon, and Geisha. When you try any of
these varieties, each cup of coffee results
in a sensory journey that emanates the
richness and diversity of the best coffee in
the world.
The Del Alto Valle Coffee brand was
created due to the economic diffi culties
that the pandemic generated for farmers. “I
was on the farm, and I saw how the farmers
of Colombia’s most important product
did not receive any help. I thought they
deserved better treatment and thought of a
way to help them,” says Barona. Her small
production has received a great reception
from supermarkets in the New Orleans
metropolitan area and online consumers.
From conscious planting and production to
carefully designing its packaging, Barona
protects the quality of her coffee. Believing
in that quality, she decided to participate
in the fi rst NOLA Coffee Festival, an event
in which large commercial brands and
recognized artisan brands from different
parts of the world with years of experience
in the industry gathered to showcase their
coffee.
Del Alto Valle Coffee, a new brand
unknown to many, with a team of one
person, was crowned champion of the
competition, receiving the most coveted
title, Best Brewed Coffee. “I didn’t even
understand when they said my name. The
person beside me told me I had won the
prize, and I couldn’t believe it,” said Barona.
Del Alto Valle Coffee’s Geisha variety,
represented by an orchid on its packaging,
was the champion among around 40
competitors with decades of experience.
The Geisha variety is Del Alto Valle
Coffee’s most precious and limited edition.
“It is a diffi cult grain to obtain,” explains
Barona. Geisha coffee is renowned for its
distinct and complex fl avor profi le. It often
exhibits fl oral and tea-like aromatics and
other delicate fl oral elements. Its vibrant
acidity, nuanced sweetness, and clean,
silky body characterize the taste. Tasting
notes might include hints of tropical fruits,
stone fruits, and citrus. Geisha coffee is
known for its rarity and limited availability.
The trees are less productive than other
coffee varieties, and the meticulous care
required during cultivation, harvesting, and
processing further restricts the quantity of
Geisha coffee produced. The altitude of
the land where it grows provides optimal
conditions for Del Alto Valle Coffee’s
geisha bean, and caring for it is the task of
the families who cultivate it.
That’s why, beyond demonstrating the
excellent quality of Del Alto Valle Coffee,
the brand exists with the mission of
supporting the education of the children
of the families of the coffee farmers.
Barona seeks to make the company selfsustainable
but dedicates all profi ts to
funding educational projects for children in
the Ulloa region. By purchasing any variety
of Del Alto Valle Coffee, you are enjoying
a great cup of coffee and allowing 150
families from three towns to receive school
supplies and Christmas gifts and have a
better quality of life.
Supporting the families is the reason that
moves Barona to create the best coffee:
highlight the work of the families who take
care of each bean and reward them for
their hard work, ensuring they can have a
decent, fair source of employment.
If you want to impress someone with
good taste this Christmas or surprise your
friends and family on any occasion, gift the
best Colombian Coffee roasted in New
Orleans. You can fi nd Del Alto Valle Coffee
at your favorite supermarket or order
online at delvallecoffee.com.

Del Alto Valle, Café con Propósito
No es común conocer a una
emprendedora con la pasión
de Paola Barona. La entrega a
su producto Del Alto Valle Coffee, va
claramente más allá de crear una empresa
exitosa.
MadreMonte, Pink Bourbon, y Geisha.
dice Barona. Su pequeña producción
ha recibido una gran acogida por los
supermercados del area metropolítana de
Nueva Orleans y por los consumidores que
compran por internet. Desde la siembra y la
producción consciente hasta el cuidadoso
diseño de sus empaques, Barona protege
la calidad de su café. Creyendo en esa
calidad, decidió a participar en el primer
Festival del Café en Nueva Orleans, un
evento en el que competían grandes
marcas comerciales y reconocidas marcas
cafi cultores. Barona busca que la empresa
sea sostenible, pero dedica todas las
ganancias a apoyar proyectos educativos
Puedes encontrar Del
Alto Valle Coffee en tu supermercado
Nicaragua’s First Miss Universe
By AnaMaría Bech
@anamabech
Sheynnis Palacios was crowned Miss Universe
on November 18. The Nicaraguan community
worldwide showed great happiness for that victory, and
the community of Louisiana was no exception. To pay
tribute to the vibrant community in the region, we wanted
to highlight their beautiful Nicaraguan on the cover.
For the first time, Central America has a Miss Universe.
Her physical beauty is undeniable and represents the
prototype of the Latin woman, with tanned skin, dark hair,
and brown eyes. But beyond her looks and style, Palacios
vibrant personality adds to her beauty. She constantly
shows her appreciation of her humble origins and
displays the values instilled at home.
During interviews, she talks about having grown
up in a humble home and feeling proud of achieving
her professional education. Thanks to her efforts, she
qualified for scholarships. With her mother’s support and
hard work of her own, she became a obtains her degree
in Communications. Palacios recognizes God as the
driving force of her life; that’s why we saw her pointing to
the sky in gratitude at the moment of her coronation.
With the changes in the Miss Universe organization,
which now evaluates candidates on a comprehensive
performance, Palacios obtained an essential advantage
with her social initiative. Miss Universe recognized this
effort as noted on its website, “Coming from a country
where this issue is rarely addressed, she started an
accessible initiative called ‘Understand Your Mind,’ an
effort to raise awareness in the community about the
importance of mental health.” This initiative continues to
be one of her main objectives as the new sovereign.
As for her visit to New Orleans before the pageant,
Palacios felt at home. “They have welcomed me with a lot
of love, affection, and empathy; they have made me feel
very comfortable with that human warmth, not only from
Nicaraguans but also from all Latin Americans.”
Palacios assured us that it will not be the last time she
visits the city of New Orleans, and we hope she will do so
during an official visit as Miss Universe soon.
Nicaragua tiene
Miss Universo
Sheynnis Palacios fue
coronada el 18 de
noviembre como Miss
Universo. La comunidad
Nicaragüense en todo el
mundo, demostró mucha
felicidad por ese triunfo, y la
comunidad de Louisiana no
fue la excepción. Para rendir
homenaje a esta fuerte
comunidad de la región,
quisimos resaltar a su bella
compatriota en portada.
Por primera vez,
Centroamérica tiene una
Miss Universo. Su belleza
física es innegable y
representa el prototipo
de la mujer latina, con piel
bronceada, cabello castaño,
y ojos oscuros. Pero más
allá de su imagen y su
porte, Palacios exhibe una
gran apreciación por sus
orígenes y constantemente
resalta los valores
inculcados en casa.
En varias ocasiones
durante entrevistas, habla
de haber crecido en un
hogar humilde y de sentirse
orgullosa al haber salido
adelante, con un título
universitario. Gracias a su
empeño, pudo calificar
para obtener becas. Con
el apoyo de su madre,
y con su propio trabajo,
logoró convertirse en
comunicadora.
Palacios se enfoca
siempre en mencionar a
Dios como motor de su vida,
y pudimos verla apuntar al
cielo en agradecimiento al
momento de su coronación.
Con los cambios en
la organización de Miss
Universe que evalúa el
desempeño integral de las
candidatas, Palacios obtuvo
una ventaja importante
gracias a su programa social
resaltado en su biografía
en la página oficial de Miss
Universe: “Originaria de un
país donde raramente se
aborda el tema, comenzó
su programa televisivo
“Entiende Tu Mente”, una
iniciativa accesible para
todos, donde entrevista
especialistas en cuidados
de salud emocional”.
Continuar con sus
esfuerzos de concientizar
a la comunidad sobre la
importancia de la salud
mental sigue siendo uno de
sus mayores objetivos como
nueva soberana.
En cuanto a su visita
previa al certamen a Nueva
Orleans, Palacios se sintió
como si estuviera en casa.
“Me han recibido con
mucho amor, mucho cariño,
con mucha empatía, me
han hecho sentir realmente
muy cómoda con esa
calidez humana, no solo
de los nicaragüenses
sino también de todos los
latinoamericanos”.
Palacios aseguró que no
será la última vez que visite
la ciudad de Nueva Orleans,
y esperamos que lo haga
durante alguna visita oficial
como Miss Universo.
Crushing Your New Year
Health Goals
By AnaMaría Bech
@anamabech
As 2024 approaches, many people
aim to start the new year with a
clean slate. They set goals and
renew their dreams, hoping to make positive
life changes. While we expect gyms to be
packed and diets to begin, we also know
that for many, it will only last for a while.
If you want to become a healthier
version of yourself in 2024, there is a way!
Eat Crush Meals is a meal prep company
that originated in Louisiana, focusing on
providing healthy meal options and sensible
portions to busy individuals. Most people
fall off the healthy eating bandwagon due to
time constraints and poor planning. That’s
where Eat Crush Meals comes in to help.
James Haik, the entrepreneur and owner of
the company, began his food journey to stay
healthy and save money on grocery waste.
The meals’ organic produce and authentic
fl avors made it easy for Haik to believe in
the company and invest in taking the local
brand beyond Louisiana. According to Haik,
“Eat Crush Meals is more than just a meal
prep company; it’s a passion project that
aims to inspire individuals to take charge
of their health and achieve their goals.” He
is a testament to a lifestyle change that
came from better nutrition. His belief in
the company’s offers has taken the local
service to over 48,000 people nationwide.
Haik’s daughter, Isabella, follows in
his footsteps as an entrepreneur in the
health industry. Isabella made her health
a top priority. “As a student-athlete, she
believes sensible-portioned meals are the
key to performing better. “Isabella’s drive
to ‘crush it’ and maintain a 3.75 GPA while
participating in activities like swim team,
choir, and cheerleading is a testament to her
commitment to health and performance,”
says Haik.
She enjoyed the positive changes she
saw within herself so much that she became
more involved in the family business. “I got
involved to help my dad with little projects
like labels and meal prepping.” Now, father
and daughter work together as a team.
They understand the challenges individuals
with busy lifestyles face, including the
diffi culty of regularly preparing healthy
meals in between activities. Isabella brings
fresh ideas to the company, drawing on
her multicultural background to suggest
fl avorful dishes incorporating some Latin
fl avors she grew up with. By offering diverse
food options on their menu, they can cater
to different taste buds, including Jamaican
dishes, Central American cuisine, and Asian
fl avors.
Eat Crush Meals has developed several
plan options to help individuals kick-start
their health journey, including the 15 meals
per week plan, which provides 6-7oz of
food and 1300-1500 calories daily. This
plan removes the guesswork, thinking, and
preparation that can be overwhelming for
people seeking a balanced diet. In addition
to this option, Eat Crush Meals offers Paleo,
Breakfast Only, and Weight Loss Essential
plans for ready-to-heat gourmet meals.
Eat Crush Meals is involved in community
service, sharing positivity, and partnering
with schools like Chapelle, where Isabella
goes, promoting healthy eating. “I’d like to
infl uence my family and other teenagers in
my community of the importance of nutrition
and fi tness,” says Isabella. Haik also believes
food is the starting point for achieving a
healthier and happier life. He knows that
his company is changing lives one meal at
a time.
Alcanzando tus Metas de Bienestar
de Año Nuevo
Se acerca el 2024, y muchas personas
buscan empezar el nuevo año con
borrón y cuenta nueva. Se fi jan
metas y renuevan sus sueños, con
la esperanza de realizar cambios positivos
en sus vidas. Si bien esperamos que los
gimnasios estén llenos y que comiencen las
dietas, también sabemos que para muchos
esto no durará pasado enero.
Si buscas convertirte en una versión más
saludable de ti mismo en 2024, ¡hay una
manera!
16 ~ VIVA NOLA DECEMBER ‘23 / JANUARY 2024
de comidas saludables y porciones
sensatas a personas ocupadas.
alimentación saludable debido a limitaciones
de tiempo y una mala planifi cación. Ahí es
donde Eat Crush Meals brinda una ayuda.
James Haik, empresario y propietario de la
empresa, comenzó su viaje alimentario para
mantenerse saludable y ahorrar dinero en
alimentos desperdiciados.
prioridad. Como estudiante
atleta, cree que las comidas en
porciones sensatas son la clave
para tener un mejor rendimiento.
“La determinación de Isabella
por lograrlo y mantener un GPA
de 3,75 mientras participa en
actividades como el equipo
de natación, el coro y las
porristas es un testimonio de su
compromiso con la salud y el
rendimiento”, dice Haik.
Disfrutó tanto de los cambios
positivos que vio dentro de sí
misma que se involucró más
en el negocio familiar. “Me
involucré para ayudar a mi papá
a poner etiquetas y preparar
las porciones”, dice Isabella.
Ahora, padre e hija trabajan en
equipo y entienden los desafíos
que enfrentan las personas
con estilos de vida ajetreados,
incluida la difi cultad de preparar
comidas saludables entre
actividades. Isabella aporta
ideas nuevas a la empresa
y aprovecha su experiencia
multicultural para sugerir platos
sabrosos que incorporan
algunos de los sabores latinos
con los que creció. Al ofrecer
diversas opciones de comida
en su menú, pueden satisfacer
diferentes gustos, incluidos
platos jamaicanos, cocina
centroamericana y sabores
asiáticos.
Eat Crush Meals ha
desarrollado varias opciones
de planes para ayudar a las
personas a iniciar un camino
saludable, incluido el plan de
15 comidas por semana, que
proporciona de 6 a 7 onzas
de alimentos y de 1.300 a
1.500 calorías por día. Este
plan elimina la planeación,
creación, y preparación que
resultan abrumadores para las
personas que buscan una dieta
equilibrada. Además de esta
opción, Eat Crush Meals ofrece
planes Paleo, Breakfast Only
y Weight Loss Essential para
comidas gourmet listas para
calentar.
Eat Crush Meals se ha
involucrado en servicio
comunitario, compartiendo
positividad y asociándose
con escuelas como Chapelle,
a donde va Isabella, para
promover una alimentación
saludable. “Quiero conscientizar
a mi familia y a adolescentes
Isabella. Por su parte, Haik cree
que la alimentación es el punto
de partida para conseguir una
vida más sana y feliz. Sabe que
su empresa está cambiando
vidas con una comida más
saludable a la vez.
VL! UB
A Latin Band
Worth It
By Axel “LOLA” Rosa
@lolalarosaa
Everyone can agree that music is a
universal language that allows us to
connect with others even if we don’t
speak the same. VALE! ULB, a bilingual
Miami-based multicultural Latin band with
a New Orleans native as their producer,
brings a similar vibe of connection
through a mix of personalities, cultures,
and sounds.
A talented group of Grammy-Awardwinning
musicians and artists make up
VALE! ULB. Val Vargas is the band leader
who brings her exceptional vocals and
experience, having worked with artists like
Alexander Pires and Christian Yaipen. On
percussion, Anier Alonso has extensive
expertise in numerous musical genres,
including Yoruba, Abakuá, and Tajona.
Emiliano Torres, the Musical Director, is a
trumpeter who has recorded, played, and
toured with various artists, including Ricky
Martin. Alberto Torres, a.k.a. Friki, handles
the guitar and strings for the band. His
credits include Yoli Mayor and Gente
de Zona. The band’s producer and bass
player is Darius Harrison, a.k.a. Deezle,
whose credits include Nicki Minaj, Drake,
and Lil Wayne.
The acronym ULB in the band’s name
stands for United Latin Band. “It comes
from different cultures. I’m Colombian,
and my Dad is Peruvian. Aniar is Cuban,
Deezle is from New Orleans, and Emi
(Emiliano) is from Argentina.” The first
part of the band’s name, VALE!, has a
double meaning. According to Deezle,
it’s a wordplay from the lead singer’s
nickname, Vale, and the saying used
in diverse Latin American countries to
denote agreement. “It’s like ‘VALE!
Uniting Cultures’ like ‘GET IT!, ‘DO IT!’”
says Deezle, adding that the exclamation
point adds to the expressive feeling.
Deezle grew up playing the saxophone,
training in classical music, and playing
in the orchestra and jazz bands in high
school. “All those elements combined
made me respect the variations and
differences in life and culture,” Deezle
said, adding he loved Oye Como Va by
Santana when he first heard it. “I never
heard anything like that ‘cause it was all
funk, R&B, Motown, and Disco back then.”
Deezle didn’t know how to identify the
sound he was hearing, but it resonated
with him. After earning a Grammy for his
work with Lil Wayne on the Carter III and
extensive credits as a music producer,
engineer, and songwriter, Deezle kept
gravitating to Latin music. “That’s what I
like, is good stuff, it don’t matter what the
genre is. In Hip-Hop, you didn’t have that
mixing of cultures like that early on. Even
though a lot of cats were Puerto Rican,
they weren’t mixing Spanish or English in
pop songs.”
Now that he resides in Miami, he can
explore his passion for Latin music with
VALE! ULB. The band formed nearly four
years ago in 2019, playing sounds that
stand out from other bands and genres
because of the unique way they create
music. “We’d say take a piece of Black
Eyed Peas, take a piece of No Doubt,
take a piece of Santana, take a piece of
Stevie Wonder and pour some Gumbo
on it and that’s us,” says Deezle. Batá
drummer Anier Alonso agrees: “We take
the essence of different influences. For
example, pop, Latin rap, trap in English,
ballads in Spanish, jazz, and salsa. Mixing
all that creates an atypical sound because
we are all different but from the same
Latin Origins.”
Last November, their performance at
Chickie Wah Wah was a real treat for
the dancers that night. VALE! ULB got
the crowd going with original tracks like
Bailes Chicos and Hey Mama, leaving fans
asking for an encore! The band happily
played their newest single, Sube El Nivel,
which you can find on YouTube. To listen
VL! UB
Una Banda
Latina que Vale
la Pena
Todos estamos de acuerdo en que
la música es un lenguaje universal
que nos permite conectar con los
demás aunque no hablemos el mismo
idioma. VALE!
Deezle, cuyos créditos incluyen a Nicki
Minaj, Drake y Lil Wayne.
ULB en el nombre de la banda
es el acrónimo de Banda Latina
Unida.“Proviene de diferentes culturas.
Soy colombiana de padre peruano. Aniar
es cubano, Deezle es de Nueva Orleans
y Emi (Emiliano) es de Argentina”. La
primera parte del nombre de la banda,
VALE!, tiene un doble significado.
Según Deezle, es un juego de palabras
del apodo de la cantante, Vale, y
de la expresión “¡Vale!’ utilizada en
diversos países latinoamericanos para
denotar acuerdo. “Es como ‘¡VALE!
Uniendo Culturas’, ¡Házlo!”, dice Deezle,
agregando que el signo de exclamación
aumenta ese sentimiento expresivo.
Deezle creció tocando el saxofón, se
formó en música clásica y tocó en la
orquesta y bandas de jazz en la escuela
secundaria. “Todos esos elementos
combinados me hicieron respetar las
variaciones y diferencias en la vida y
la cultura”, dijo Deezle, y agregó que
le encantó Oye Como Va de Santana
cuando lo escuchó por primera vez.
“Nunca escuché algo así porque en ese
entonces todo era funk, R&B, Motown y
Disco”. Deezle no sabía cómo identificar
principio. Aunque muchos gatos eran
puertorriqueños, no mezclaban español
e inglés en las canciones pop”.
Ahora que reside en Miami, puede
explorar su pasión por la música latina
con VALE! ULB.
Gumbo y esos somos nosotros”, dice
Deezle. El baterista de Batá, Anier
Alonso, coincide: “Tomamos la esencia
de diferentes influencias. Por ejemplo,
pop, rap latino, trap en inglés, baladas
en español, jazz y salsa. Mezclar todo
eso crea un sonido atípico porque todos
somos diferentes pero con los mismos
orígenes latinos”.
Su actuación en Chickie Wah Wah
en noviembre pasado fue un regalo
para los bailarines de esa noche. VALE!
infrmado de futuros shows y ver
contenido original, visita www.valeulb.
la ciudad natal de Deezle muchas veces
Venezuelan Community Honors Virgin of
Chiquinquirá Day with Traditional Gaita Rhythms
The Venezuelan community
celebrates the day of the
Virgin of Chiquinquirá to the
rhythm of Gaita.
Our Lady of the Rosary of
Chiquinquirá is the patron saint
of Colombia and of the Zulia
State in Venezuela. In Colombia,
the image rests in the Basílica in
honor of her name. In Venezuela,
the image of the Virgin engraved
on a wooden board is found in
the Basilica of Maracaibo, Zulia
State, and serves as its formal
patron saint. Every year on
November 18, the celebration
of Her Day involves massive
processions and songs in honor
of the Virgin, also affectionately
known as “La Chinita” or “Queen
Morena.”
Celebrations in honor of La
Chinita are now held worldwide
by the Venezuelan diaspora.
In this sense, on November 18,
the Venezuelan and Hispanic
community prayed with Brother
Manuel Solórzano to celebrate
a solemn mass and procession
in honor of this invocation of the
Virgin at the Hispanic Apostolate
in Metairie. The celebration
continued after the mass with
a tasting of typical Venezuelan
food enjoyed during the
Christmas season.
For many, the day marks the
beginning of Christmas. The
Virgin is serenaded to the rhythm
of Gaita de Furro, a musical
genre originating in the Zuliana
region that has spread to the
rest of Venezuela. The traditional
Gaita has very particular
instruments, among which the
following stand out: the cuatro,
the maracas, the charrasca, the
pipe drum, and the essential
instrument called furro or furruco,
a direct descendant of the
Spanish zambomba. This rhythm
can include religious, romantic,
historical, or protest themes.
This popular rhythm is
represented in Louisiana by the
Nolagaita group, composed
of a group of musicians and
enthusiasts from Venezuela
whose main objective is to make
this popular genre known in the
community and encourage its
growth. The group maintains
an active presence on social
networks, posting about their
presentations and activities.
Nolagaita has 12 members who
delighted the audience with
songs dedicated to Chinita,
such as “La Elegida” and “Reina
Morena,” among many others.
The organizing committee was
pleased with the participation
and hopes the celebration will
continue growing.
o furruco, descendiente directo
de la zambomba española.
Este ritmo puede incluir temas
de índole religiosa, romántica,
histórica o de protesta.
Este ritmo popular se
encuentra representado en
Louisiana por la agrupación
Nolagaita compuesta por un
grupo de entusiastas y músicos
de Venezuela que tienen
como objetivo principal dar a
conocer este popular género
en la comunidad e incentivar su
crecimiento. El grupo mantiene
una presencia activa en redes
sociales donde informan
sobre sus presentaciones y
actividades. Nolagaita cuenta
con 12 integrantes quienes
deleitaron a la audiencia con
temas dedicados a la Chinita
tales como “La Elegida” y “Reina
Morena” entre muchos otros.
El comité organizador se
mostró complacido con la
participación y espera que la
celebración continúe creciendo.
