Table 5.5 illustrates the occupational group of persons living in Meath. Clerical, managing and<br />

government workers represent the highest percentage of workers (20%), while farming, fishing and<br />

forestry workers represent the lowest percentage (4%).<br />

Gypsum industries and College proteins are located in proximity to the current <strong>compost</strong>ing site. These<br />

industries provide employment in the region.<br />

5.2.4 Land Use / Agriculture<br />

The site currently contains a <strong>compost</strong>ing <strong>facility</strong>. The proposed extension area is comprised primarily of<br />

existing hardstand and also a small amount of planted woodland.<br />

5.2.5 Tourism and Amenities<br />

According to the Meath County Development Plan, 2007-2013, ‘Meath has much to offer as a tourist<br />

destination – in particular its rich heritage, the quality of the rural landscape and its coastline’ (Ref<br />

Section 3.3.1).<br />

Meath, according to Fáilte Ireland, is located in the East & Midlands Tourist Region. The East &<br />

Midlands Region consists of Counties Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Wicklow, Offaly East and<br />

Westmeath. The latest available statistics from Fáilte Ireland are for the year ending December 2008.<br />

These statistics state that the number of overseas visitors to the East & Midlands Region was 839,000<br />

in 2008. The total tourism revenue generated from these visits was €311.9 million.<br />
