5361- Kilmainhamwood Compost Facility Extension- EIS<br />

resulting from the construction of the proposed extension at the existing <strong>compost</strong>ing <strong>facility</strong> is assessed<br />

and appropriate mitigation measures are submitted.<br />

8.3 SURFACE WATER<br />

The area proposed for the extension to the existing <strong>compost</strong> <strong>facility</strong> is located in the townland of<br />

Ballynalurgan, approximately 4km south of Kingscourt, Co. Cavan and 6km northwest of Nobber, Co.<br />

Meath. The R162 road runs to the south and southwest and access to the <strong>facility</strong> is provided by means<br />

of an entrance onto the R162.<br />

The total existing <strong>facility</strong> area is approximately 1.3 hectares with an overall landholding of 13.2<br />

hectares. The topographic elevation of the site ranges from approximately 60m AOD to approximately<br />

88m AOD. The overall slope of the site is to the south and east.<br />

The site is located in the upper catchment of the Dee river catchments [Hydrometric Area 06], within the<br />

Neagh-Bann River Basin District (NBRBD). The Dee River is the main watercourse in the vicinity of the<br />

site. The River Dee is located approximately 1km south of the Kilmainhamwood Compost <strong>facility</strong>. A<br />

surface water drainage ditch is located along the eastern boundary to the site and flows in a<br />

southeastern direction (See Figure 8.1).<br />

8.3.1 Receiving Environment<br />

Surface Water Quality<br />

Surface water samples have been taken at the Kilmainhamwood Facility as part of the EPA Waste<br />

License W0195-01 prior to commencement of waste acceptance in September 2006. Results are<br />

included in Appendix 8.2. Surface water samples were obtained from a stream along the eastern site<br />

boundary. SW2 sampling location is located upstream of the <strong>facility</strong> with SW1 sampling location is<br />

located downstream of the <strong>facility</strong>.<br />
