Side Trip:
You know what they say about imitation
being the highest form of flattery?
We’re hoping that holds true in
relation to cooking turkey.
When my sister and brother-in-law host
Thanksgiving, we feast
on grilled turkey prepared
over charcoal
briquettes on a traditional
Weber grill. It is
always juicy and delicious,
and the oven
isn’t taken over by an
enormous roasting
pan.
Two years ago, my
husband got a smoker
and has started experimenting
with
preparing different
MYRNA
WAGNER
meats. As we were talking about hosting the
family Thanksgiving this year, he suggested
we smoke turkey. I loved the idea, but with
hesitation. “What if our experiment doesn’t
turn out?” I quizzed, fearing I would need a
backup plan with a traditional roast bird.
My husband, always the problem solver,
decided to smoke the birds Sunday afternoon,
just in case. You read that right —
birds, plural. That’s because my husband
likes spicy Cajun seasonings and others in
our family do not. Thus, one bird seasoned
with garlic, chili and pepper, and the other
more traditionally with sage, thyme and
marjoram.
We put the two birds on at the same time,
inserted the temperature probes, and he
monitored the heat throughout the day.
The bird at the top of the smoker registered
done a good 90 minutes before the one
below. (My theory is heat rises as they were
both 12-pounders.)
After letting them stand to cool I began
the task of removing meat from bones, and
all indications are that our experiment was
a success. The meat went in plastic freezer
bags, to be gently reheated on Thursday.
The bones simmered overnight in the
Crock-Pot for broth to make gravy.
And rest of all the carcasses went out for
the garbage truck to pick up overnight. That
right there is a win.
Filling the home with the fragrance
of pine or fir is a Christmas
tradition for many families.
And many in the Iowa Great Lakes
and beyond fulfill that tradition
with an annual trip to Tannenbaum
Tree Farm just outside of Milford.
This year the farm will be open as
usual the Friday after Thanksgiving
from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. with the same
hours Saturday, Nov. 25, then 11
a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday.
Following weekends hours will
be determined by tree supply and
customer needs.
Owner Nathaniel Stover says
they’ve actually already ran out of
tree tags indicating visitors’ eagerness
to decorate for the season.
And while it was still a pretty
tough growing season once again, bunch of trees 7-8-feet tall that need
later summer rains helped many to sell, which is great,” Stover said.
trees add some growth.
“I’ve actually been doing things a
“Each year it seems I don’t think little differently and trimming them
I’ll be able to open but then I have a twice a year so they’re filling out a
Tannenbaum Tree Farm opens for
the season
lot more. I started doing that the
first spring [after taking ownership
of the farm] and I think it’s honestly
paid off.”
So while the supply remains
limited, Stover believes the trees are
looking better and better each year.
Visitors can choose from concolor
fir, Fraser fir, white pine, Scotch pine,
and Colorado blue spruce.
Stover’s girlfriend continues to
handle the wreath building side
of the business, which are always
popular with customers as well.
He looks forward to having families
visit the farm for their Christmas
tradition, whether it’s a long-standing
one, or perhaps just starting with
their first live tree.
“More than anything I want it to
be family oriented and as genuine
as possible,” Stover said. “I hope
to have at least one of my boys out
there helping me some of the time
and hope everyone that visits finds
what they’re looking for this holiday
season.”
If they’re visiting the farm then the
perfect tree is certainly at the top of
that list. F
THE
It’s almost time to rock around the
Christmas tree.
Due to the prolonged drought
this summer, many Christmas tree
farms in the area are experiencing
a shortage of trees this season. But
never fear.
Country Pines Tree Farm in Marcus,
IA, is ready to get your rocking with
your very own Christmas tree.
The first day of the season for the
farm is set for Wednesday, Nov. 22.
They’ll be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
They are closed for Thanksgiving on
Thursday and then they’ll be open
from 9-5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday
followed by 1-5 p.m. on Sunday.
Then depending on their supply at
the end of the weekend
they are set to be open
from 1-5 p.m. from Nov.
27-Dec. 1; 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
on Saturday, Dec. 2. Their
closing day is set for 1-5
p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3.
For Justin and Tanya
Pritts, it’s all about the
experience.
That’s why they decided
to buy the Country
Pine Tree Farm a few
years ago.
“I personally been coming to this
farm since I was a little kid — since
the second year they were open, I
think,” Justin said. “It was a tradition
for my family and I to come out to
find our perfect Christmas tree each
year and cut it down. There’s nothing
better in my opinion.”
Once they heard that the previous
owners, Neal and Marie Bork, who
started the farm 28 years ago, intended
to sell or shut the farm down, Justin
and Tanya decided to pick up the
baton and allow people to carry on
the tradition their own family loved
so much of visiting a Christmas tree
farm every season.
They have about four and a half
acres of variety of trees and about
3,000 trees on site.
When people come to the farm,
the Pritts family is hoping they wander
through all the acres of the farm
to find that one special tree.
And despite the not-so-great growing
season, they are still committed
to giving families a chance to “hunt”
for their perfect tree.
“We did this last year and are going
to do it again this year — we stake
some of our precut trees that we
bring in out in our field so that people
can go and cut one of them down
if they choose,” Justin said. “We take
a lot of pride in our farm and it’s not
an ideal situation but we want to do
our best to provide the experience for
people and it went over really well
last year.”
The trees they will have for sale either
precut or in the field include balsam
fir, Fraser fir, Canaan fir, white
pine and Scotch pine in a variety of
sizes.
They also have a cabin that Santa visits
where kids can come and share their
Christmas wishes. There’s a firepit for
people to warm up those fingers and
toes and they offer hot apple cider and
hot chocolate with cookies to warm
you from the inside out.
They also have a large barn that
sells Christmas and holiday decor to
help people with decking the halls.
To capture the moment, they have
a perfect setup — a red, vintage 1949
GMC pickup — in front of which
families are encouraged to take their
pictures with their perfect tree.
Now that the turkey has been consumed,
get ready to rock around the
Christmas tree in your own home by
Celebrate
history and
heritage in
Orange City
Here
Sinterklaas
comes
Frosty the Snowman likes he
leads a good parade. And as it
turns out, so does Sinterklaas.
Every year on the first Saturday of
December, he and his helper, Piet,
make their through the downtown
streets of Orange City from Stadscentrum
to City Hall with a procession
of children and adults.
The parade leads to a morning
of stories, songs, puppet plays, fun
and games celebrating the history of
Sinterklaas.
“It’s like passing the baton from
an older generation to the younger tumes then we’ll break out into the
generation — the tradition of Sinterklaas
and the legend of St. Nick,” The games have proved to be
games.”
said Randy Van Peursem, a member quite popular and last year eight
of the Dutch Heritage Boosters, new games were introduced.
who host the event. “After all the “Those were a big success so we’re
centuries we’re remembering this continuing that,” Van Peursem said.
man and his mission. A lot of people
think it’s Santa Claus, but it’s we borrowed and that was one of
“We only had one sjoelen board that
actually a celebration of Sinterklaas the favorites so this year my dad
the saint, and it’s always great seeing was actually able to make four new
the excitement of both the younger ones out of our old puppet theater.
kids and adults who enjoy it, too.” That one and shootin’ nuts is pretty
At 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, this popular, basically anything that
year’s Sinterklaas Dag will get underway
as the crowd gathers to see knocking things over.”
involves throwing something and
Sinterklaas and Piet arrive at Stadscentrum
in a wagon where they’ll proceedings will be the Tulip Court
Adding an element of fun to the
stop and a brass quintet will lead being on hand to help out with the
the procession to city hall where games.
everyone will file in for story time. After the games wrap up, everyone
is called back to gather and
“We have a narrator that will welcome
Sinterklaas and talk a little sing one last song and say goodbye
bit about the history, then we have to Sinterklaas before receiving their
two puppet shows that talk more own chocolate medallion at the
about the history and story,” Van conclusion of the festivities.
Peursem said. “After that is a little Fun, games, chocolate — a great
bit more narration about their cos-
KATE HARLOW | STAFF WRITER
Christmas
After a successful first year, Sioux
Center has decided to bring back
their Hometown Holidays event for
another go.
The second annual Hometown Holidays
are set to take place from Nov. 30-
Dec. 2. Each day will be packed with a
variety of fun activities that will include
something for everyone in the family to
enjoy.
It’s a perfect time for the community to
come together.
“We felt like we had a hole in that time
of the year and didn’t really have much
going on during this time,” said Amber
VanDerVliet, the event coordinator with
the Sioux Center Chamber of Commerce.
“We all enjoy the Summer Celebration so
much — seeing the community come
together is such fun. We wanted to do see
if we could do that again during this time
of the year.”
The event kicks
off on Thursday,
Nov. 30, with a
Christmas Story-
Walk at Centre
Mall hosted by
the Sioux Center
Library. Centre
Mall will also be
the place for the
Casey’s Bakery
cookie decorating,
coloring
page contest, hot
drinks and teas,
mini train rides
and more.
A lighted parade
along First
Avenue will light the night.
“I love the lighted parade,” said
VanDerVliet. “Seeing the way the businesses
came together to support
this event and putting together
floats is amazing. Right now we
have about 30 entries in the parade
and I am thinking we will
still get a handful yet.”
There is not set theme for the
parade with the exception that
they should light up — which
gives the businesses and organizations
room to let their imaginations
run free.
Immediately following the parade
is a tree lighting ceremony
in the Centre Mall parking lot
which will be followed by a
concert featuring Hollander Jazz
and a free family movie showing
of “The Grinch.”
Friday will see the return of
the Christmas StoryWalk as well
as the Peoples Bank Christmas
for a Cause at Heritage Village. That night
Sioux Center Arts will present “A Christmas
Showcase” at Covenant CRC.
Saturday kicks off with breakfast with
Santa and will continue with more fun
at Centre Mall. Later that day there will
be Christmas at the Village and then a
Festive Sweater Trivia showcase at Late
Harvest Brewing.
Citizens of Sioux Center are also being
asked to channel their inner Clark
Griswold and participate in the first
ever Hometown Holidays House Lighting
Contest. Any residential property with a
Sioux Center address can participate and
a map will be available with all of the
participating homes so people can grab
some hot chocolate and check them out.
People will be able to vote on their
favorite house and winners will get cash
prizes.
So head to Sioux Center to enjoy some
hometown holiday feelings, because
there’s no place like home for the holidays.
Christmas
at the
winery
A
day of Christmas
fun.
That’s just what
the people at Round Lake
Vineyards & Winery have
planned from 1-4 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 3.
This will be the fourth
year that they have hosted
Christmas at the Winery.
It’s a day for the whole
family to enjoy the best
of the holidays and it just
keeps getting more popular.
The event is free.
“Each year the event
gets bigger, which coincides
with our growth
over the those years. We’ve
remodeled to add another
100 indoor seats that
works really well when
we do events like these,”
said Scott Ellenbecker, the
owner of Round Lake Vineyards &
Winery.
There will be lots of activities for
the whole family to enjoy.
“It’s a great day for families and
kids. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be
here listening to kids talk about their
wishes for Christmas. Santa will be
here from 1:30-3:30 p.m. We’ll have
lots of activity and craft stations
for kids to play from 1-4 p.m.,” Ellenbecker
said. “These are set up at
tables so kids can move from one activity
to another and play with other
kids. We’ll also have animals so kids
can get up and personal with goats,
horses and other farm animals.”
This is one event that bring in
droves of families.
“We see lots of kids with parents
and groups of moms with kids. The
kids are free to roam the play area
together.” Ellenbecker said. “Moms
and parents either follow the kids
around or keep vigilance
over pizzas and pretzels
while the kids are off having
fun.”
Kids are not the normal
target market for most
events hosted by Round
Lake Vineyards & Winery,
but this is one where the
goal is to put smiles on children’s
faces.
“The kids love this event.
Decorating cookies or creating
a gift for mom and dad.
You can see the joy on kids’
faces throughout the day,”
Ellenbecker said. “It’s just
about the fun. It’s a day for
the kids and parents to get
into the Christmas spirit.” F
