A Guide To The Programme
Welcome to the St Austell Brewery cellars
for our 22nd Celtic Beer Festival.
I hope you’re as excited as we are that Cornwall’s
biggest event for beer lovers is back – we’ve been
looking forward to this all year! Due to the pandemic,
it’s the first time the festival has been held since 2019.
We’ve been working through plans for a fresh and
exciting approach for this event and it promises to be
bigger and better than ever. It’s been a fantastic year
for our business and what better way to celebrate
than with good beer, good music, and good times
together.
All profits from our ticket sales will be donated to
St Austell Brewery’s Charitable Trust which supports
charities, communities, and individuals in need across
the South West. Our Trust has raised over £1 million
for good causes since it was established in 2003 -
£200K from festival ticket sales alone! We can’t wait
to raise even more this weekend, so thank you for
coming - we really appreciate your support.
There are over 100 beers to try today - cask ales,
lagers and craft brews from across the South West
and beyond. There’s also a huge selection of limitededition
beers from our own talented brewing teams
in Cornwall & Bath, and musical entertainment from
local artists throughout the day.
As always, I am particularly grateful to all our teams
(and their families) who have volunteered to give up
their time to set up the festival and staff the bars.

This will ensure as much money as possible that we
raise will go back to the Charitable Trust. Huge thanks
must also go to all the companies that have kindly
sponsored this fantastic event too - we couldn’t do
it without you.
So, all that’s left for me to say is please enjoy
yourselves and I wish you all a very happy Christmas
and a prosperous 2024.
Cheers all!
Welcome From Kevin Georgel
Chief Executive 3

We’re so happy to be welcoming everybody
back to our Celtic Beer Festival.
These events do not happen without a lot of
people behind the scenes, and it has been a huge
team effort to bring the Celtic Beer Festival back.
We started having conversations about it in 2022.
Sadly, we were unable to hold the festival during the
pandemic (for the first time since 1999) and during
this time, the cellars fell into disrepair. It’s thanks to
the team here (particularly Dave Pedlar, Len Barrett
and Becky Palmer) that the space looks as it does
today. In September, there were also volunteers
- from our teams across the business – who gave
up their weekend to pick up a paintbrush. Andrew
Ferguson and his team have put in a huge amount
of work to ensure our technical services equipment
is ready for today too, so that every beer we pour
is of the best possible quality. Thank you to every
person behind the scenes who has been involved in
helping to transform the space and a special thanks
must go to Adam Sprague and Alex Henderson for
coordinating all the beer.
It would be remiss of me not to mention my longtime
friend and former Brewing Director, Roger
Ryman, who sadly passed away in 2020. I’ve been
honoured to take up the reins from Roger and I know
how delighted he would be that we’re reopening the
doors to our cellars today. He founded the festival
back in 1999 and it was always a highlight of his year.
I’m looking forward to continuing Roger’s legacy in
this exciting new era for St Austell Brewery, with
a brilliant team behind me. They have brewed a
selection of special limited-edition beers for us
today, to help us raise as much money as we can for
our Charitable Trust.
As usual we have focused on cask ale, as it is the most
natural, sustainable, and flavoursome style of beer
there is. It’s what we’re famous for in this country
and it fully allows our brewers to showcase their
creativity and talent.
Master Brewer, Mat Henney leads our production
teams here at St Austell. His team have created
a huge array of interesting beers to taste. I’d also
like to give a shout out to our Group Engineering
Developments Manager, Lee Walker, for coordinating
our small batch beer programme this year. Thank
you, Lee!
There are so many beers I would recommend you try
from our St Austell team – too many to name. Our
Engineers have brewed a fantastic Mango Weizein
beer called Vice Versa (5% abv). Blaze of Glory (6%
abv) - a Cherry Rauchbier - is one of my favourites
too. If you’re a stout fan, make sure you give Fresh
Pot (4.8% abv) or Seirios (a 10% abv salted caramel
fudge cake beer) a taste.
We’ve teamed up with Heligan on a 4% Sumerian
ale called Gwaneth. It’s brewed using a heritage
wheat variety called Emmer, which is grown on the
Heligan estate and Bappir bread made from barley
flour. We’ve added date syrup to the boil, as per
transcriptions from Sumerian historical tablets and
(for a modern twist) added in some hops. Make sure
you give it a try if you’re using your beer tokens at
the top bar today.
As for me, I’ve brewed Ellis Original (4.9% abv) - a
complex ale with interesting biscuity, toffee, grain
notes balanced with earthy, piney hops and a sweet
nose. It’s based on an old Ellis Brewery recipe from
our archives, so we’re excited to have recreated it
especially for today.
Diploma qualified and experienced brewer, Will
Hartley leads our production team at Hare Brewery
in Bath. Will and his team smuggled the old twobarrel
brewing kit out of Graze (our managed pub
at Bath train station) before the site got transformed
into Ludo Sports Bar & Kitchen earlier this year. In
their spare time, and with very limited funds, our
Engineers and Brewers in Bath installed and tested
the kit just in time to brew beers for today.
I’m so excited to taste the results of our Bath team’s
hard work. Our apprentices have created Will’o the
Wisp, a 6.5% Wee Heavy that is warming and fruity
while our Quality team have brewed a delicious
3.8% dark mild (Mild High Club). Make sure you try
them both!
In addition to our own beers, we’ve been honoured to
collaborate with many of our friends across the beer
4
Welcome From George Young
Brewing Director

industry this year including DEYA, Verdant, TOAST,
Mondo, Pulpt Cider and Neptune. All fantastic
brewers. Keep an eye out for their beers on the bar!
Last but certainly not least, a huge thanks to all our
suppliers for sponsoring this event and the Charles
Faram team - who we collaborated with on our
latest beer, Anthem - for providing our wonderful
hop displays and wall coverings. The festival simply
couldn’t happen without you all!
Now in its third decade, the Celtic Beer Festival is the
event which keeps on giving. The beer scene in the
UK has continued to become more vibrant over the
years and it’s great to have an annual opportunity to
celebrate the innovation of talented brewers, here in
the South West and beyond. We are so proud of the
variety of beers we have on the bar today (over 100),
yet it’s the creativity of my own team that makes me
the proudest of all.
Have a brilliant day and enjoy our 22nd Celtic Beer
Festival.
do this?
• By working as multi-disciplined teams of
Here in the UK, we’re the nation’s leading beer,
cider and pub company and the name behind a
host of brilliant brands from Inch’s to Birra Moretti
and many more. What’s more, when brewing and
making beers and ciders that people love, we build
them with staying power. More than 90% of the
beers we sell in the UK are brewed here and around
30% of the nation’s apples go into our ciders. The
way we make and serve our beers and ciders
can have a significant impact on our customers,
communities, and the environment. So, working
sustainably and responsibly is fundamental to how
KOPPARBERG
Our story starts in a small town in Sweden,
called Kopparberg. Founded on its copper and
gold reserves, the town was overflowing with
a rich supply of local spring water, packed full
of minerals. This was the perfect blend for what
would become the world’s first fruit cider.
As a proudly independent family run business, we
still brew using the same recipe that is enjoyed
around the world.
We pride ourselves on creating firsts that last,
where our range of premium drinks can be enjoyed
on every occasion. Whether it’s fruit cider, spirits,
or alcohol-free range, Kopparberg has you covered.
The Lost Gardens Of Heligan
Over thirty years ago The Lost Gardens of Heligan
were rediscovered from the brambles of time.
Today, Heligan remains one of the most-loved and
romantic gardens in the UK, appreciated as much
for their beauty and mystery, as for the groundbreaking
restoration.
Over 200 acres await explorers, plant lovers and
garden romantics. Victorian Productive Gardens
and Pleasure Grounds beckon along winding paths
laid out over two centuries ago. The Jungle takes
you on a sub-tropical journey through bamboo
tunnels and under majestic tree ferns whilst the
estate reveals a lost world of traditional breeds,
wildlife and ancient woodlands.
generations. At 12.30pm every Friday we have the
it doesn’t leave the farm.
