14 August 1947 <strong>The</strong> Muslim state of <strong><strong>Pak</strong>istan</strong> is created by the<br />

partition of India at the end of British rule. Hundreds<br />

of thousands die in widespread communal violence<br />

and millions are made homeless. Mohammed Ali<br />

Jinnah becomes the first Governor General of the<br />

new state.<br />

October 1947 Armed tribesmen from <strong><strong>Pak</strong>istan</strong>’s North West<br />

Frontier Province invade Kashmir. <strong>The</strong> Maharaja<br />

requests armed assistance from India.<br />

September 1948 Jinnah dies. <strong>The</strong> first India-<strong><strong>Pak</strong>istan</strong> war over the<br />

disputed territory of Kashmir breaks out. Fighting<br />

continues throughout the year.<br />

January 1949 <strong>The</strong> war ends and a ceasefire is arranged by the<br />

United Nations. Both India and <strong><strong>Pak</strong>istan</strong> agree to<br />

hold a referendum in the state, which to this date<br />

has never been held.<br />

March 1956 <strong>The</strong> Constitution proclaims <strong><strong>Pak</strong>istan</strong> an <strong>Islam</strong>ic<br />

republic.<br />

October 1958 Army Commander in Chief, General Mohammed<br />

Ayub Khan seizes power. A pro-western and<br />

secular leader, he rules the country for more than a<br />

decade.<br />

September 1965 <strong>The</strong> second India-<strong><strong>Pak</strong>istan</strong> war breaks out after<br />

<strong><strong>Pak</strong>istan</strong> launches a covert offensive across the<br />

ceasefire line into Indian-administered Kashmir.
