WILBUR H. CHEN, MD, MS<br />

Wilbur H. <strong>Chen</strong>, MD, MS, FACP, FIDSA is a<br />

Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland<br />

School of Medicine, Chief of the Adult Clinical<br />

Studies section of the Center for Vaccine<br />

Development and Global Health, and Director of the<br />

UMB Travel Medicine Practice.<br />

Dr. <strong>Chen</strong> completed medical school at Howard<br />

University College of Medicine, training in internal<br />

medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center,<br />

and a fellowship in infectious diseases at the<br />

University of Maryland Medical Center. He then<br />

completed a fellowship in vaccinology at the Center<br />

for Vaccine Development and Global Health.<br />

Dr. <strong>Chen</strong> conducts clinical and translational research on pathogens of global health<br />

importance, concentrating on those which primarily afflict vulnerable populations and<br />

developing countries. His research portfolio includes developing vaccines against<br />

diarrheal and enteric diseases, such as cholera, enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC),<br />

noroviruses, Shigella, Campylobacter, and typhoid and non-typhoidal Salmonella. He<br />

was the principal investigator for the pivotal efficacy licensure studies for the only<br />

cholera vaccine available in the U.S. Dr. <strong>Chen</strong> has also lead vaccine trials against 2009<br />

H1N1 pandemic and pre-pandemic influenza (Avian H5N1 and Avian H7N9 influenza)<br />

and agents of bioterror, including tularemia, smallpox, and staphylococcal enterotoxin B.<br />

He was a co-PI of the national 2009 H1N1 pandemic vaccine trial, through the National<br />

Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation<br />

Unit.<br />

Dr. <strong>Chen</strong> is internationally recognized for conducting human experimental challenge<br />

studies with diarrheal pathogens. These closely monitored quarantine studies using wellcharacterized<br />

infectious strains of selected pathogens are performed to gain new insights<br />

into pathogenesis, the immune response, or provide early efficacy of candidate vaccines<br />

or therapeutics. To complement his diarrheal disease research, Dr. <strong>Chen</strong> has research in<br />

Bangladesh, a region commonly recognized as the ancestral origin of cholera. He also<br />

has research in Mali, where his participation in the development of a pentavalent<br />

meningococcal conjugate vaccine is anticipated to make major improvements in<br />

meningitis for sub-Saharan Africa.<br />

Dr. <strong>Chen</strong> is currently a voting member of U.S. Centers for Disease Control and<br />

Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, member of NIAID’s Data<br />

and Safety Monitoring Board, and steering committee member of the U.S. Army<br />

Medical Research and Development Command’s Military Infectious Diseases Research<br />

<strong>Program</strong>.

The Tradition of<br />

ENDOWED PROFESSORSHIPS<br />

T<br />

he first endowed professorships were established more than<br />

500 years ago with the creation of the Lady Margaret chairs<br />

in divinity at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. The<br />

original endowed chairs were sponsored by Lady Margaret,<br />

countess of Richmond, and grandmother of Henry VIII in 1502.<br />

Subsequently, private individuals began making financial contributions<br />

to establish other endowed professorships and chairs such as the<br />

Lucasian Chair of Mathematics, which Sir Isaac Newton held beginning<br />

in 1669. Professor Stephen Hawking, the internationally renowned<br />

physicist and recipient of the 2010 Presidential Medal of Freedom, was<br />

another prominent holder of this endowed chair.<br />

The honor associated with appointment to an endowed position has<br />

remained unchanged for the last 500 years and is recognized as one of<br />

the highest tributes that an academic institution can bestow upon its<br />

most distinguished faculty. These endowed professorships and chairs<br />

continue to reward exceptional scholars uninterrupted to the present<br />

time.<br />

The Office of Development is charged with securing private gifts to<br />

ensure the School’s tradition of excellence is sustained through robust<br />

research, clinical, and educational programs and initiatives. The<br />

University of Maryland School of Medicine is fortunate to have nearly<br />

85 endowed chairs & professorships in various stages of completion<br />

and held by esteemed faculty members.


FRANK M. CALIA, MD<br />

Frank M. <strong>Calia</strong>, MD, MACP is a Professor Emeritus of the<br />

University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is a graduate of<br />

Harvard University and a cum laude graduate of Tufts University<br />

School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at<br />

Boston City Hospital, and residency and fellowship in infectious<br />

diseases at the Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital. He served in<br />

the United States Army at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in<br />

Fort Detrick and attained the rank of Major. Dr. <strong>Calia</strong> is a member of<br />

the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society; the American<br />

Clinical and Climatological Association; the American College of<br />

Physicians; the Infectious Diseases Society of America and other<br />

important medical societies. In April 2000, Dr. <strong>Calia</strong> was elected a<br />

Master of the American College of Physicians. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal<br />

Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine in Infectious Diseases.<br />

Dr. <strong>Calia</strong> joined the University of Maryland School of Medicine faculty in 1969 and was appointed<br />

Chief, Section of Infectious Diseases, Baltimore VA Medical Center. He rose through the ranks to<br />

professor of Medicine and Microbiology & Immunology, and Chief of the Medical Service at the<br />

Baltimore VA Medical Center. On two occasions during his tenure at the University of Maryland he<br />

has served as Acting or Interim Chairman of the Department of Medicine. He was also Acting<br />

Chairman of the Departments of Diagnostic Radiology, Ophthalmology and Radiation Oncology.<br />

From 1992-2004, Dr. <strong>Calia</strong> was Vice Dean and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for the<br />

School of Medicine. In April of 2004, he became Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Microbiology &<br />

Immunology. From November 2004-November 2005 he served as Interim Chief Medical Officer at the<br />

University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. <strong>Calia</strong> returned to service in the School of Medicine as the<br />

Theodore E. Woodward Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Medicine, as well<br />

as Physician-in-Chief of the University of Maryland Medical Center in February 2006, a position he<br />

held until December 1, 2009.<br />

Between 1979 and 2004, Dr. <strong>Calia</strong> was honored by the medical students with 24 teaching awards, both<br />

Golden Apple Awards and Teacher of the Year Awards. He has also been awarded Teacher of the<br />

Year by the Maryland Higher Education Council (representing all colleges and universities in<br />

Maryland) and Teacher of the Year by the University System of Maryland. In 2000, he received the<br />

AOA Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award from the Association of American Medical<br />

Colleges. In 2008, he was elected as an inaugural member of the Pass and Susel Academy of<br />

Academic Excellence and also won the University of Maryland Baltimore’s Founder's Day Teacher of<br />

the Year award.<br />

Dr. <strong>Calia</strong> has chaired many of the most important School of Medicine ad hoc and standing committees,<br />

including the Faculty Promotions Committee, Curriculum Coordinating Committee, Academic<br />

Advancement Committee, Curriculum Revision Steering Committee and the Appointment, Promotions<br />

and Tenure Revision Committee. Additionally he has served on numerous search committees and on<br />

all of the important committees of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University<br />

of Maryland Medical System/Hospital.<br />

Dr. <strong>Calia</strong>'s major interests are in infectious disease, bacterial diarrhea, staphylococcal infections, vibrio<br />

infections, bioterrorism and clinical pharmacology.<br />

Dr. <strong>Calia</strong> serves on the Editorial Board of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Practice and the Editorial<br />

Board of the University of Maryland Medical Alumni Association's Bulletin. He has contributed to 10<br />

books and over 50 publications in refereed journals. He serves as a reviewer for the Journal of the<br />

American Medical Association, Journal of Infectious Diseases, Annals of Internal Medicine, American<br />

Journal of Medicine, Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy and Infectious Disease in Clinical<br />

Practice.
