WILBUR H. CHEN, MD, MS
Wilbur H. Chen, MD, MS, FACP, FIDSA is a
Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland
School of Medicine, Chief of the Adult Clinical
Studies section of the Center for Vaccine
Development and Global Health, and Director of the
UMB Travel Medicine Practice.
Dr. Chen completed medical school at Howard
University College of Medicine, training in internal
medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center,
and a fellowship in infectious diseases at the
University of Maryland Medical Center. He then
completed a fellowship in vaccinology at the Center
for Vaccine Development and Global Health.
Dr. Chen conducts clinical and translational research on pathogens of global health
importance, concentrating on those which primarily afflict vulnerable populations and
developing countries. His research portfolio includes developing vaccines against
diarrheal and enteric diseases, such as cholera, enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC),
noroviruses, Shigella, Campylobacter, and typhoid and non-typhoidal Salmonella. He
was the principal investigator for the pivotal efficacy licensure studies for the only
cholera vaccine available in the U.S. Dr. Chen has also lead vaccine trials against 2009
H1N1 pandemic and pre-pandemic influenza (Avian H5N1 and Avian H7N9 influenza)
and agents of bioterror, including tularemia, smallpox, and staphylococcal enterotoxin B.
He was a co-PI of the national 2009 H1N1 pandemic vaccine trial, through the National
Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation
Unit.
Dr. Chen is internationally recognized for conducting human experimental challenge
studies with diarrheal pathogens. These closely monitored quarantine studies using wellcharacterized
infectious strains of selected pathogens are performed to gain new insights
into pathogenesis, the immune response, or provide early efficacy of candidate vaccines
or therapeutics. To complement his diarrheal disease research, Dr. Chen has research in
Bangladesh, a region commonly recognized as the ancestral origin of cholera. He also
has research in Mali, where his participation in the development of a pentavalent
meningococcal conjugate vaccine is anticipated to make major improvements in
meningitis for sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Chen is currently a voting member of U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, member of NIAID’s Data
and Safety Monitoring Board, and steering committee member of the U.S. Army
Medical Research and Development Command’s Military Infectious Diseases Research
Program.

The Tradition of
ENDOWED PROFESSORSHIPS
T
he first endowed professorships were established more than
500 years ago with the creation of the Lady Margaret chairs
in divinity at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. The
original endowed chairs were sponsored by Lady Margaret,
countess of Richmond, and grandmother of Henry VIII in 1502.
Subsequently, private individuals began making financial contributions
to establish other endowed professorships and chairs such as the
Lucasian Chair of Mathematics, which Sir Isaac Newton held beginning
in 1669. Professor Stephen Hawking, the internationally renowned
physicist and recipient of the 2010 Presidential Medal of Freedom, was
another prominent holder of this endowed chair.
The honor associated with appointment to an endowed position has
remained unchanged for the last 500 years and is recognized as one of
the highest tributes that an academic institution can bestow upon its
most distinguished faculty. These endowed professorships and chairs
continue to reward exceptional scholars uninterrupted to the present
time.
The Office of Development is charged with securing private gifts to
ensure the School’s tradition of excellence is sustained through robust
research, clinical, and educational programs and initiatives. The
University of Maryland School of Medicine is fortunate to have nearly
85 endowed chairs & professorships in various stages of completion
and held by esteemed faculty members.
