Innovation is
a strength of the
Basel regions
Thomas Kübler, head of Location
Promotion Baselland,
wants to position the Basel
region as an attractive business
location. According to the
UBS Cantonal Competitiveness
Indicator, Basel-Land Canton is
ranked sixth. One of the great
strengths of Basel-Landschaft
is its innovative strength.
However, there is a need for
action in the labor market or
the cost environment.
Cantonal competitiveness high
"The competitiveness of cantons is
regularly reviewed and measured by
various organizations. One widely
respected benchmark is the UBS
Cantonal Competitiveness Indicator
(CCI). It is surveyed every two years
and assesses the competitiveness of
the cantons based on eight pillars.
The most recent CCI was published
in summer 2023. According to
this, the canton of Basel-Landschaft
occupies sixth place among all Swiss
cantons and places itself in the
group with high competitiveness.
The continuous improvement in the
ranking over the last few years
could be continued in 2023 and the
position of Basel-Landschaft could
be consolidated behind the urban
cantons.
UBS continues to rank the
economic structure, innovative
strength, accessibility and catchment
area among the economic
strengths of the Basel region.
Relative weaknesses are identified in
the areas of public finances, the
labor market and the cost
environment.
Keeping an eye on factors that
can be influenced
UBS distinguishes between changeable
and unchangeable factors. In
terms of unchangeable factors, the
canton of Basel-Landschaft ranks
sixth, as in the overall ranking.
However, it is ranked lower for
factors that can be influenced. All
three topics with relative weaknesses
belong to the influenceable
factors.
• Looking at the labor market,
the demographic structure
of the Basel area is striking.
With a high proportion of
people over 65 in the population
and few young people,
the labor shortage will
continue to become more
severe. Incentives must be
created for young people to
