Traffic jams are a
significant risk
Capacity bottlenecks in public
transport and motorized private
transport have become a painful
reality in the Basel region, shaping
the picture of mobility. Daily
traffic congestion and the associated
loss of time have assumed
alarming
proportions.
The
outdated
transport
infrastructure,
which was
last
expanded
in the
1970s,
further
aggravates
the
situation.
The issue
of mobility
is one
of the
major
concerns
of Basel-
Landschaft's
economy.
While
mobility needs have grown steadily,
the necessary infrastructural
adjustments have largely failed to
materialize. This situation is
particularly problematic for SMEs
and their employees, as it is
difficult to pass on or compensate
for the time lost due to the delays.
Particularly against the backdrop
of cross-border commuters, who
are important for the Basel-Land
economy, the daily traffic jams
pose a considerable risk. Baselbiet
has been competing with the
economic area in the Baden border
region for a long time. The traffic
situation does not help here.
Despite this unacceptable situation,
there is little progress to be
seen in expanding traffic capacity,
and the plans do not demonstrate a
clear political will to bring about
effective and sustainable improvements.
The functionality of the
transport system is a decisive
location factor for the economy. In
order to ensure this in the future,
the expansion of capacities, the
promotion of interchanges, and the
creation of a robust network
structure
should be
pursued.
In particular,
the
A2 must
be expanded,
and
high-capacity
roads
with
tangential
routing
and
high-performance
transfer
hubs must
be provided.
The
implementation
of these
measures
is crucial
to improve mobility, strengthen
the business location and sustainably
increase the quality of life of
the people in Baselbiet. It is time to
tackle the urgently needed changes
in the transport infrastructure to
provide a better future for this
region.
