Baselland Business

Baselland Business
"Location factors
determine success"
Christoph Buser,
Director of the Baselland
Chamber of Commerce
The waiting time is over: after a
four-year hiatus, Business Day is
back. Finally. A lot has happened
since the last issue in fall 2019.
Behind us lie difficult and challenging
years. Keyword pandemic. It
was a challenge for all of us.
Especially for SMEs as well. Many
small and medium-sized enterprises
had existential fears. Some
unfortunately disappeared. But
larger companies also had to fight
hard: production losses, interrupted
supply chains, shutdowns, to
name just a few examples.
So, it is all the more pleasing
that today, four years after the last
economic day, we can see that the
situation has calmed down again
economically. On the other hand,
we have had to live with the
Ukraine war for the past year and a
half and, unfortunately, recently
also with the unrest in the Middle
East. Nevertheless, from an economic
point of view, we are no longer
just reacting, but can once again
envisage medium-term plans. This
very important circumstance is
taken up by the motto of the
Business Day: "Back on track for
success".
I am very much looking forward
to this year's edition, which is
packed with many highlights. We
have lined up a top-class program.
Our renowned guest speakers
Jan-Egbert Sturm (skilled workers
and labor market), Beatrice Weder
Di Mauro (economic factors) and
Cornelia Meyer (energy) will
provide classifications of important
location factors. In the short or
long term, these will determine
how successfully the Basel area can
hold its own in national and
international competition. For
example, the expansion of the
transport infrastructure, which
has fallen (too) far behind, is
increasingly becoming a problem
for the economy. Conspicuously
more companies complain about
negative effects on their business
in this regard. In order for us to
continue to play in the top league,
we need the good framework
conditions that are so often claimed
by politicians. Today even
more than in the past. After all,
economic success doesn't just fall
from the sky. We have to do something
to make it happen.
I was pleased to see that the
bourgeois parties emerged stronger
from the national elections on
October 22, and I feel positive
about this. More liberal economic
forces are needed in our country's
political power centers to ensure a
good political framework. That's
why I'm all the more pleased that
Federal Councillor Albert Rösti,
the head of DETEC, has agreed to
honor us at the Business Day and
will report first-hand on the
infrastructural challenges facing
our country. But there are also
challenges for the companies. The
most troublesome are the dried-up
labor market, the increasingly
impaired mobility and the uncertain
energy supply. These are
factors that weaken business
development. We need to get back
on track here.
Where else are entrepreneurs
feeling the pinch? Are they satisfied
with the Basel region as a
location? What is the fiscal burden
like? How can they pass on higher
production costs? Do they have
problems with the interest rate
environment? I could easily
expand the questionnaire here. We
regularly take the pulse during my
company visits to the 100 largest
manufacturing companies in the
Basel region. The feedback varies
depending on the industry, but
tends to be "cautiously positive".
You can get a 1:1 insight on Business
Day, where we have planned a
talk with five CEO's who run
important companies in the Basel
region and all belong to "Baselland
Business". "Baselland Business" is
- as you surely know - an initiative
of the Baselland Economic Chamber
and aims to be very close to the
pulse of the 100 largest producing
companies in the canton. The five
CEO's will give a direct and unvarnished
picture of the current situation
in their industry and will certainly
also express their wishes and de-
"I am very much looking forward to this year's edition,
which is packed with many highlights. We have lined up a
top-class program"
Christoph Buser,
Director of the Baselland Chamber of Commerce
mands to politicians. In addition, you
will find company portraits of Getec,
Alltech Installations, Agrano AG, Felix
Transport AG and Dero Feinmechanik
in this magazine. And last but not
least, on Business Day, Baselland
Economic Chamber President Roman
Mayer will also provide a brief insight
into the logistics sector, one of the
most important pillars of our economic
region.
But the Day of Business also offers
other program highlights: We will
honor the winners of the Swiss
Innovation Challenge. More than
100 companies took part in the
competition - and three of them
ultimately won over the jury with
their business ideas. Of course, you
will also be able to convince
yourself at the VIP Networking
Dinner - namely of the many
creations of three outstanding top
caterers. So, you can look forward
to a whole host of highlights. And
as you would expect, I also have a
surprise in store for you. But more
about that at the end of the official
part on November 23. After all,
anticipation is the best joy. So come
on by, I'm looking forward to
Interview Cornelia Meyer
An energy trilemma
Nothing works without energy;
this sector is fundamentally
important for all of us. How
would you describe the current
global situation in the energy
sector and in which direction is it
heading?
The energy sector is fundamental to
all economic activities, be it transport,
heating, energy for economic
activities such as industry or food.
Until the Ukraine war, Europe and
the IEA had sustainability in mind.
The war in Ukraine and the resulting
need to replace Russian gas and put
oil and petroleum products under
sanctions brought energy security
and affordability to the forefront.
We face an energy trilemma - in
other words, energy security,
affordability, and sustainability.
There is much emphasis on
phasing out carbon-based energy
sources and achieving net zero
consumption by mid-century. This
may well work in rich OECD
countries that can afford the
necessary investments. Developing
countries will not be able to move as
quickly because they still need to lift
hundreds of millions of families out
of poverty, which requires energy.
In Africa and Asia, more than 700
million people currently live in
energy poverty. Energy poverty is
not conducive to the sustainability
nor to the health of the people
affected. By 2050, the world's
population will grow by 2 billion
people. They will live in Africa and
South Asia, which means that these
regions cannot afford to shut down
current energy sources.
What the world needs is openmindedness
about emissions
reduction technologies such as
CCUS, because net zero does not
necessarily mean zero carbon.
What countries need are
integrated strategies that
realistically assess energy
needs to 2050, taking into
account technological feasibility
and affordability to
achieve sustainability goals.
These policies need to be
long-term, i.e., go beyond
4-year election cycles.
Policymakers should
avoid stop-and-go
approaches and frequent
U-turns, as
these are accompanied
by enormous
economic costs.
What does Switzerland
need to do (or
not do) in the energy sector
specifically for the economy to
remain successful?
All energy sources must be affordable
and available. Switzerland already has
a disadvantage in international
competitiveness due to its high-cost
base and the high Swiss Franc. If
energy becomes even more expensive,
this would further impair its competitiveness.
We must also ensure that
energy is available to all sectors at all
times. Interruptions, rationing or
retrofitting are not acceptable.
About the person
Cornelia Meyer is an economist,
energy expert and management
consultant. She studied at the
University of St. Gallen, the
London School of Economics and
the University of Tokyo.
She entered banking in 1990 at
the major bank UBS and worked
at Citibank as chief economist.
Meyer spent years in the
energy sector, including
stints at General Electric, BP
and as chairwoman of Gasol plc.
She was an economic policy
advisor in Japan to the Minister
of International Trade and
Industry, Yoshiro Mori.
She is currently a member of
the Oxford Energy Policy Club
and was selected by CNN as one
of twenty global thought
leaders. She is also a member
of the Advisory Board of the
Istanbul Finance Summit. Since
2015, Meyer has been Chairwoman
and Chief Economist at
independent asset manager LBV
Asset Management.

Energy as a location factor
Ensuring favorable
energy prices in the
long term
In recent years, the energy policy of
the Canton of Basel-Landschaft has
focused strongly on sustainability
and climate protection. This led to
high energy prices, uncertain
supply and increasing greenhouse
gas emissions.
In view of the
growing energy
demand,
"Baselland
Business"
companies are
calling for a
change in
strategy. Energy
policy should
focus on
security of
supply, economic
efficiency
and sustainability.
In particular,
there is a
need for action
in the electricity
sector, as
consumption
will increase in
the near future.
A shortage of
electricity
would be
harmful to the
national economy.
The solution lies in a technologyopen
expansion of production
capacities that goes beyond conventional
technologies. In addition, the
focus should be increasingly on
efficiency and a long-term energy
price. Small-scale production and
unsuitable production sites lead to
ever higher costs, resulting in
higher prices. It makes more sense
to produce on large plants that
benefit from suitable conditions and
economies of scale. This principle
must be internalized again in
energy supply, otherwise there is a
threat of not only high energy costs
but also perpetuated subsidies.
Therefore the 100 largest producing
companies in the canton of
Basel-Landschaft wish to see the
expansion of energy production
facilities, taking into account
technological openness and
economic
efficiency, in
order to ensure
favorable
energy prices
in the long
term. Furthermore,
the
creation of
framework
conditions for
sufficiently
cheap and
sustainable
energy as well
as the promotion
of new
technologies is
necessary.
Finally, the
increasing
extreme
weather events
are to be
counteracted
with a cantonal
climate adaptation
law.
A holistic energy policy that
harmonizes security of supply,
economic efficiency and sustainability
is crucial for a future-proof
energy supply and economic
development.
Economic factors
The government
should outsource
more tasks
The public administration in Switzerland
is growing rapidly and is now
outpacing the private sector in terms
of growth rate. This not only represents
a financial burden for the state
treasury, but also affects the SME
economy. The constant expansion of
the administration is mostly based
on the constant introduction of new
regulations. But that doesn't make
it any better. Because
more people mean more
specialization, more
interfaces and therefore
more complexity. This
development goes hand
in hand with the need
for ever better qualified
personnel. Government
recruitment agencies
are also feeling the
effects of the dried-up
labor market, but they
have completely different
options at their
disposal. And these are
being exploited with
sometimes exaggerated
compensation models:
This is where the state not only
becomes cumbersome in its
actions, but also enters into direct
competition with SMEs.
The feedback from "Baselland Business"
companies clearly shows how
the expansion of government tasks is
perceived as an increasing problem.
However, efforts to counter this
growth have not been made. So far,
there has been a lack of political will to
change this, allowing Parkinson's Law
to gain momentum: "Work expands to
fill the time available." Specialized
expertise prevails in the offices, while
common sense is neglected. This leads
to the creation of ever more jobs to fill
supposed gaps.
A way out of this negative growth
spiral is not easy. On the one hand,
the legislature must reduce its own
regulatory frenzy. On the other
hand, there is also the tried and
tested approach that not every new
task has to be carried out within the
cumbersome state structure. We
need the courage to outsource more
tasks. With tenders and clearly
defined performance expectations,
competition for price and quality is
created, which is beneficial to the
whole. It is also easier to eliminate
government tasks that are outdated.
They are simply no longer advertised.
A consistent focus on outsourcing
government tasks where
possible would certainly help to
increase flexibility and reduce
government spending. Digitalization
offers completely new opportunities
in this respect, which can only
achieve their full effect together with
the innovative strength
and digitalization
expertise of the private
sector.
In view of the state
competition on the labor
market, politics is called
for. One idea that has
emerged from the many
discussions with Baselland
business enterprises
is the creation of an
SME wage index that
would serve the state as a
reference and guard rail
for the remuneration of
state and cantonal
employees. This would
eliminate the unpleasant
feeling that the state is using its own
tax money to swoop away urgently
needed employees.
Whatever the measures may look
like, a streamlining, de-bureaucratization
and modernization of the
state system is necessary. An effort
in this regard is urgently needed to
ensure Baselland remains an
attractive business location in the
long term.
Interview Jan-Egbert Sturm
The labour market
reacts with a delay
Jan-Egbert Sturm is the Director
of the KOF Swiss Economic
Institute at ETH Zurich. He is
the guest speaker at the
Business Day. He will speak on
the topics of skilled workers
and the labour market.
Adrian Jäggi
We are living through turbulent
times on many fronts. Keywords
are the Ukraine war, energy
shock, inflation fear, digitalization
or automation. How does it fit
in that we have one of the lowest
unemployment rates in history?
Demographic factors in particular
play an important role here. More
and more people are taking well-deserved
retirement, and fewer and
fewer are taking their place. This
phenomenon built up during the
pandemic and has become increasingly
apparent in the recovery and
normalization phase since then. In
addition, and this must also be seen
in connection with the pandemic, we
have had two very good economic
years. Industry boomed and consumers
were also able to spend more
money again in the service sector.
Only this year has the part of the
economy that depends on foreign
demand weakened. The labor market
is reacting with a delay.
The shortage of skilled workers in
technical professions, industry
and construction is particularly
high. What is the best way to
counteract this?
That is a business management
question. As an economist, I can
only take a meta-perspective here,
which usually means that more
energy and effort must be expended
to find and retain workers. The
alternatives are more digitization
and automation, and unfortunately
one cannot rule out that this will
also lead to some companies investing
in other locations.
You know the Swiss labor market
inside out. In northwestern
Switzerland, the conditions are
not the same as in the rest of
Switzerland. In this context, how
well or how poorly does the Basel
region stand?
For decades, the Basel economic
region has been strongly characterized
by the positive structural
development of the pharmaceutical
industry. This also has a positive
effect on the labor market.
About the person
Jan-Egbert Sturm has been a full professor of applied economic research
at the Department of Management, Technology and Economics (D-MTEC) at ETH
Zurich since October 2005 and is also director of the KOF Konjunkturforschungsstelle
(Business Cycle Research Center) at ETH Zurich. Sturm is editor
of the European Journal of Political Economy and a member of various
committees and boards in Switzerland and abroad. He studied and received his
doctorate at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. From 2001 to 2003, he was head of
the Department of Business Cycles and Financial Markets at the Ifo Institute
for Economic Research in Munich and held a professorship in economics, with
a focus on macroeconomics and monetary policy, at the Center for Economic
Studies (CES) of the Faculty of Economics at Ludwig Maximilian
University in Munich. In 2003, he was appointed Full Professor
of Economics, Chair of Monetary Economics of Open Economies at
the University of Konstanz (D) and thus simultaneously took
over the management of TWI - Thurgau Economic Institute at
the University of Konstanz in Kreuzlingen (CH).

Labor market as a location factor
Shortage of skilled
workers is the greatest
challenge
Switzerland is facing a serious
challenge as the shortage of skilled
workers reaches historic proportions.
At the end of last year, 120,000
jobs remained unfilled, the highest
number since
2003, and this
shortage is
exacerbated by
the lowest
unemployment
rate in 20
years. Primary
causes are
structural,
including
increasing life
expectancy and
the retirement
of the "baby
boomer"
generation. The
"Baselland
Business"
companies see
the shortage of
skilled workers
as their greatest
current
challenge,
inhibiting
economic
development
and limiting existing growth
potential. This problem is made
even more complex by social
change.
At the same time, ideas of the
"post-growth society" are emerging,
advocating a deliberate
shrinking of the economy to relieve
people of stress caused by excessive
work. This movement propagates
the reduction of working hours,
the promotion of part-time work,
and demands a full wage with four
days of work per week.
Such anti-growth views are not
only dangerous for companies
because they reduce the supply of
labor. They also mean a direct
reduction in prosperity and call
the foundations of social cohesion
into question. Therefore, it is
important to find ways to integrate
more people into the labor market
and to increase the stints in
part-time
work.
Against this
backdrop,
Basel-Landschaft
businesses
are
calling for
incentives to
boost pensions
for those
who want to
stay in the
labor market
longer,
enhanced
support for
immigration
of skilled
professionals,
better alignment
of
university
offerings with
business
needs, financial
and tax
incentives for
full-time work, and tax deductibility
for the full cost of childcare.
These measures are intended to
help overcome the shortage of
skilled workers, strengthen the
economy and preserve social
prosperity in Switzerland.
Interview Roman Mayer
«It was an exciting
first year»
Baselland Business: Roman
Mayer, you took over the presidency
of the Baselland Economic
Chamber on July 1, 2022. What is
your interim assessment after
more than 12 months in office?
Roman Mayer (President Baselland
Economic Chamber, CEO Swissterminal):
It was an exciting first year
as president. I am impressed by how
professionally Christoph Buser and
his team operate.
In your first interview
as Wika president,
you mentioned
three key issues:
the traffic
problem, the
shortage of
skilled workers
and
energy
policy.
Where do we
stand today?
Our canton still lacks an overall
transportation concept. Energy
policy also lacks a holistic approach.
The shortage of skilled
workers is taking on ever clearer
forms. Many students are under
pressure from their parents to go to
college, even though they might
prefer to start their careers with an
apprenticeship. Yet practical
vocational training can be as
rewarding as a university degree.
This is exactly where the Economic
Chamber comes in. I am
proud that we have
succeeded in holding the
vocational show in the
St. Jakobshalle for the
first time this year.
The theme for this
year's Business Day
is "Back on track
for success". How
far have you managed
to do that with
your company, Swissterminal AG,
after the pandemic?
Last year, we only felt the corona-induced
easing of the situation to a
limited extent. The war in Ukraine is
having an impact on logistics in the
European hinterland. In addition,
prices for Rhine shipping rose in the
summer due to low waters. The Swiss
rail sector suffered from the chaos of
construction sites on the German rail
network. In the fall, rising energy
prices and a looming energy shortage
were added to the mix. Today, we are
concerned not only with the strong
Swiss franc, but also with the threat
of recession and increased inflation
in many countries.
What still makes you feel positive?
With our partner DP World, we rely
on a strong and global network that
we are developing together in the
European hinterland.
Interview: Reto Anklin
About the person
Roman Mayer is CEO of Swissterminal
AG, based in Frenkendorf, and
President of the Baselland Economic
Chamber. The forwarding merchant
first worked as an employee in the
family business before taking over
the CEO position from his father
Alex Mayer in 2000. Swissterminal
offers integrated logistics services
in the area of sea containers.
It has also been a partner of DP
World, one of the world's largest
port operators, since 2020. Mayer
was elected president of the Economic
Chamber on April 26, 2022, and
took office on July 1, 2022.
Interview David Bosshart
«The largest
business event in
Switzerland»
The last Business Day took place
four years ago. What are you
particularly looking forward to
this year?
In terms of the number of participants,
Business Day is the biggest
business event in Switzerland. I
experience it like a happening,
almost like a rock concert that
offers hits and communities. The
preparations are highly professional,
but also warm and carried by
great commitment. The mix of
speakers is always exciting, you can
feel the energy in the huge hall. But
the highlight is clearly the “Baselbieter
Lied” - that is more than
culture, that is cult - and must not
be missed!
This year's topic is getting back
on the road to success. Why is
Switzerland so robust as a business
location?
Within Europe, we are indeed an
island of the blessed, both perceived
and measured. Nobody is perfect,
but the willingness to perform is
still strong, both in the various
sectors and in administration,
education and health. We still have a
strong and broad middle class.
That's important, because it stands
for hope for a better life. And we
know that we have to make it on our
own - fortunately we don't have
commodities. We depend on each
other and also depend politically on
smart compromises. But maintaining
this level is becoming more
challenging - see demographics,
offspring and social challenges.
Solutions should not make things
worse.
What do you see as the greatest
challenges facing our country in
the future?
Three thrusts: first, the connection
of ICT and AI, energy and mobility.
We need the appropriate infrastructures
for this and people to implement
them. The new structures and
organizational forms should be
reliable and robust, but complexity,
vulnerability and dependencies are
increasing as interfaces increase
and we will be driven more by
probabilistics and accuracy, see AI.
Second, the geopolitical situation is
in radical flux. The networked world
is emerging with more and more
real-time information almost every
day. "Politics First" is pushing back
the economy and the market. This
development needs to be monitored
particularly closely. Third, the core
of the urgently needed competencies
is leadership. We need people
who can assess the diversity of
perspectives and convince people.
In other words, good nerves of steel,
good imagination, inspiring people,
being a mentor. Sometimes charisma
is also needed, but certainly
character.
About the person
Dr. David Bosshart is founder
of Bosshart & Partners, President
of the Duttweiler Foundation
focuses on megatrends and
countertrends in business and
society, the future of consumption,
consumer behaviour and
retail, artificial and human
intelligence, data wealth/data
poverty, contradictions of
globalisation and political
philosophy, management and
social change. He is the author
Location factor: Mobility
Traffic jams are a
significant risk
Capacity bottlenecks in public
transport and motorized private
transport have become a painful
reality in the Basel region, shaping
the picture of mobility. Daily
traffic congestion and the associated
loss of time have assumed
alarming
proportions.
The
outdated
transport
infrastructure,
which was
last
expanded
in the
1970s,
further
aggravates
the
situation.
The issue
of mobility
is one
of the
major
concerns
of Basel-
Landschaft's
economy.
While
mobility needs have grown steadily,
the necessary infrastructural
adjustments have largely failed to
materialize. This situation is
particularly problematic for SMEs
and their employees, as it is
difficult to pass on or compensate
for the time lost due to the delays.
Particularly against the backdrop
of cross-border commuters, who
are important for the Basel-Land
economy, the daily traffic jams
pose a considerable risk. Baselbiet
has been competing with the
economic area in the Baden border
region for a long time. The traffic
situation does not help here.
Despite this unacceptable situation,
there is little progress to be
seen in expanding traffic capacity,
and the plans do not demonstrate a
clear political will to bring about
effective and sustainable improvements.
The functionality of the
transport system is a decisive
location factor for the economy. In
order to ensure this in the future,
the expansion of capacities, the
promotion of interchanges, and the
creation of a robust network
structure
should be
pursued.
In particular,
the
A2 must
be expanded,
and
high-capacity
roads
with
tangential
routing
and
high-performance
transfer
hubs must
be provided.
The
implementation
of these
measures
is crucial
to improve mobility, strengthen
the business location and sustainably
increase the quality of life of
the people in Baselbiet. It is time to
tackle the urgently needed changes
in the transport infrastructure to
provide a better future for this
region.
Interview Albert Rösti
«In the long term
we be open»
The theme on Business Day is
"Back on track for success". What
needs to be done to ensure that
Switzerland remains successful
in the future?
Federal Councilor Albert Rösti: The
Swiss economy has always been
successful when it has combined
innovation, quality and production.
In northwestern Switzerland, for
example, the pharmaceutical and
chemical industries have succeeded
in doing this on a world level. But
countless SMEs in this region are
also convincing with their performance
and with people who get
down to work. Let us therefore
cultivate these strengths! As head of
DETEC, I want to do my part by committing
myself to robust road and
rail networks, because good infrastructures
are central to a flourishing
economy.
Energy policy is also economic
policy. What can the Swiss economy
expect from its energy minister
in the coming years?
I am committed to ensuring that we
have enough electricity. The economy
needs it, of course, for the
production of goods and for services,
but Switzerland as a whole will need
more electricity because we are
gradually replacing fossil energies
with electrical technologies; for
example, in heating and in transport.
To produce this electricity, we
in turn need more domestic renewable
energy. In the long term, we also
need to be open to all technologies.
What wishes do you have for
Switzerland in the next ten years?
I would like to see a Switzerland that
continues to rely on good economic
policy framework conditions in the
future - in other words, on the
lowest possible level of regulation
and, by international standards, on
low taxes and duties.
Interview: Patrick Herr
About the person
Albert Rösti was elected to the Federal Council by the United
Federal Assembly on December 7, 2022. He took office as Head of
the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy
and Communications (DETEC) on 1 January 2023.
The native of Kandersteg attended high school in Thun and studied
agronomy at the ETH Zurich. In 1997, he obtained a doctorate.
In 2001 and 2002, he completed a Master of Business Administration
(MBA) at the University of Rochester in the USA.
Professionally, Rösti has worked as an agricultural teacher,
secretary general of the Canton of Bern's Department of Economic
Affairs and director of the Swiss Milk Producers, among
other positions. From 2013, he ran the "Büro Dr. Rösti", which
offered consulting services for business and politics. He also
held various board of directors’ mandates and was active in
various associations. Rösti is married and has two adult children.
He wanted to become a politician since he was a teenager, one
reads in the portraits about the son of a farmer's family. "My
father was very interested in politics and always commented on
everything," Rösti told the “Schweizer Illustrierte”, "that's
what shaped me."
Rösti began his political career in 2008 in the executive of
Uetendorf, where he was mayor from 2014. In 2011, he was elected
to the National Council, where he was primarily involved in
agriculture, energy policy and relations with the European
Union. From 2016 to 2020, Rösti was president of the SVP Switzerland.
Albert Rösti is regarded as a pragmatic politician who is willing
to engage in dialog and make compromises. He treats his
political opponents with respect and tries to build bridges. He
is also known for his humor and down-to-earth attitude and is
considered as a sociable person. However, this does not stop him
from expressing his party's stance in calm words, but being
tough on the issues.
"Our prosperity cannot be taken for granted," Rösti says on the
SVP's homepage. "We owe it to a capable population and our
proven state order: the free market economy, independence,
federalism and our unique direct democracy. Anyone who questions
these pillars of our success endangers our quality of life,
which we have worked hard to achieve over generations." This is
the attitude that Rösti represents and these are the values that
he stands for as a politician.
In March, after 100 days in office, he also clearly outlined how
he envisions his work as head of DETEC. Three points are at the
forefront of this:
• First, I want to push for a secure energy supply and, in
particular, a secure electricity supply, and I want to do so
without any blinkers.
• Secondly, I want to make policy for our entire country,
i.e., for the cities, the agglomerations, but also quite deliberately
for the rural regions and the mountain areas.
• And thirdly, I want to further develop the infrastructures
throughout Switzerland for the benefit of our country.
These are all clear messages from a politician who knows what he
wants. It will be interesting to see what Federal Councillor
Albert Rösti will say to the public at the Business Day.
M2-25 Tinyhouse
Small solution for
large living spaces
M2-25 is a Northwest Switzerland
company that provides
quick and cost-effective
solutions for creating temporary
housing with highly flexible
housing and service modules.
Finding or offering a suitable,
affordable apartment is not easy in
the current Swiss housing market.
Especially in urban areas, the
housing shortage is acute - demand
far exceeds supply. Especially for
small households with 1 or 2 persons,
there is clearly too little rental
space, although this demand group
represents more than two thirds of
the Swiss housing reality. This is
where the convincing concept of
M2-25 comes in, which offers
modular and stackable housing
and service units on suitable
sites in urban areas,
which can temporarily
cover all the basic needs
of modern living in a small
space for little money. M2-25 is a
joint venture of the two Basel region
companies SBS AG in Pratteln and
Stamm Bau AG in Arlesheim.
Innovative solutions
The residential modules, which are
available in four different sizes
ranging from 25 to 45 square meters
of living space, are particularly
suitable for temporary interim uses
on currently unused or built-up
areas and plots of land and can be
adapted to local conditions on a
modular basis.
Each living module includes a living
and working space, a bathroom with
a shower, a kitchen and a bedroom.
The floor plans of the M2-25 residential
modules have squeezed a lot
out of a small area. In residential
complexes, additional service modules
with technology, laundry room,
meeting zone, bike room, storage
space or connecting elements
between the individual modules can
be installed. The modular system
allows the composition of the
facility to be individually adapted to
local conditions and requirements.
Natural materials
M2-25 emphasizes the use of
natural and sustainable materials.
With the emphasis on the use of
wood, a renewable resource in
Switzerland and Europe, a natural
living environment is created. A
fresh, uncluttered yet homely choice
of materials, inspired by nature,
creates a comfortable atmosphere in
which residents do not miss anything.
Firmenportrait Alltech AG
alltech Installationen
AG on a growth path
alltech Installationen AG was
founded in 1997. The family
business has developed enormously
during this time. The
number of employees grew
from 40 to 220 and the company
expanded from Kleinhüningen
to Muttenz and Arlesheim.
What has remained are the
company values and the core
competence for sanitary and
heating installations.
Founded over 25 years ago as a small
plumbing and heating company,
alltech is now one of the most
important building technology
companies in northwestern Switzerland.
The employees are at work on
up to 150 construction sites at the
same time and are characterized
above all by their quality standards
and their ability to think outside the
box. These are not only sought-after
virtues in the impressive reference
projects, such as the Roche Towers or
the new trade fair building. Private
owners also appreciate the fact that
employees take responsibility where
other service providers do not. That's
why alltech has built up a team of
specialists at its Arlesheim site to
deal exclusively with service and
conversion work for private owners.
alltech Installationen AG works
according to SN EN ISO 9001 and
carries the label "Toplehrbetrieb
24 Baselland Business

Gebäudetechnik" (top apprenticeship
company for building technology).
The scope of activity includes
sanitary and heating installations as
well as industrial and refrigeration
systems. Proven expertise in energy
systems and a 24-hour service
round off the services. For private
owners or investor groups, the
company takes on the entire responsibility,
from small renovation
projects to large-scale projects.
Family professionalism
"It sounds contradictory at first. Our
pursuit of family values in an
industry like construction, driven
by hectic and a rustic language. But
this is exactly what you find when
you visit our premises," says CEO
Mauro Fusco.
The warm team atmosphere that
motivates top performance and has
ensured for years that alltech is a
popular partner for both private
customers and investor groups.
Accordingly, the company attaches
great importance not only to the
professional skills but also to the
social competencies of current and
future colleagues.
Wellness at home
"In the public eye, we are mainly
noticed because of our eye-catching
yellow fleet of vehicles and our
references in prestige projects, such
as the Roche towers or the new trade
fair building," says Fusco. But the
company also trumps with many
other services. These include, as
mentioned above, the service and
remodeling specialist team, which
since 2012 has been based in Arlesheim
exclusively to take care of the
needs of private customers and
property management companies.
Needs change over time. Especially
when it comes to bathroom
remodeling. A few years ago, the
functionality of a bathroom was the
focus of planning. Today, the wellness
idea dominates above all.
Double lavabos, walk-in showers
with rain showers and the targeted
use of light sources ensure that the
mind can relax and stress stays
outside. That's what the bathroom
specialists in Arlesheim are there
for. They support customers with
3-D visualizations to find the right
solution for them. If desired, they
can also take on the role of complete
renovator and coordinate all the
necessary work and suppliers.

Company profile Agrano
Agrano helps with
baking rolls
With its products, Agrano AG in
Allschwil helps chefs, pastry
chefs and master bakers. Now
Agrano is planning to expand
its site.
Reto Anklin
Agrano has been the innovative
Swiss manufacturer and specialist
for the bakery and dessert kitchen
since 1946. The high degree of
convenience of the bakery and
dessert semi-finished products
guarantees not only a wide variety
in the bakery and dessert kitchen,
but also the simplest preparation,
safe success and satisfied consumers.
In addition to the wide range
of semi-finished products, Agrano
AG, based in Allschwil, also has
frozen baked goods in its range.
In the area of clinical nutrition,
Agrano now has high-calorie,
high-protein products to combat
malnutrition that can be prepared
in no time at all.
Agrano also offers an extensive
collection of recipes as well as
specialist seminars for its customers.
Like many success stories,
Agrano’s is based on a mix of
captivating product ideas, a great
deal of pioneering spirit and ambitious
visions. Alfred Scherz founded
Agrano AG in Basel in 1946 with the
aim of launching a gluten-boosting
vitamin preparation.
What followed were baking
agents based on malt, milk, sourdough
and enzymes, and with them
the market breakthrough. The huge
success and the constant expansion
of the product range made it necessary
to move to Allschwil in 1987,
where Agrano is still active today
and knows how to maintain its
leading position in the Swiss
market.
Takeover in 1992
In the absence of a successor in the
founding family, the takeover by the
Dr. Oetker Group in 1992 proved to
be the optimal solution and a
milestone for the company. Even
though Agrano AG operates today
under the umbrella of the Martin
Braun Group together with other
companies from Europe, it remains
for Swiss customers what it has been
since its foundation: a Swiss partner
that can be relied on in all matters.
Agrano AG also remains loyal to
its site in Allschwil, which will soon
be modernized and expanded at a
cost in the double-digit millions.
"We are currently in the process of
putting the work out to tender," says
John Berner, Managing Director of
Agrano AG.
The planned extension, with an
area of more than 6oo square
meters, will provide additional
space for wet production. Traditio-
26 Baselland Business

nally produced ingredients on a
natural basis for bread production
will be produced there. The existing
buildings will also be renovated and
brought up to the latest energy
standards by 2025. John Berner sees
the project as a commitment to
Basel-Landschaft as a location and
to Allschwil in particular.
Poor traffic access
The love for Allschwil is marred by
only one thing: "The unfortunate
thing about our location in the
Bachgraben area is the poor traffic
access," says Berner. For employees
from France and Germany, it's just
about okay, but anyone traveling
on Swiss roads has to reckon with a
commute of up to an hour longer in
the morning and evening because
of traffic congestion on the A3 and
the lack of a Bachgraben-Allschwil
feeder road. The bus also regularly
gets stuck in traffic jams, he said.
"Our customer service also suffers
because appointment deliveries for
our customers are simply no longer
possible. That worries us," says
Berner. The expansion project
shows that Agrano has not yet
given up hope for better transport
connections
Company profile Felix Transport AG
«We carry what you
need every day»
Felix Transport AG, founded in
1952 by Walter Felix in Zwingen,
is an owner-operated family
business, which is now managed
by Fabian Felix in the third
generation.
Hanspeter Felix, who led the company
for 40 years, is still closely
associated with the company as
Chairman of the Board of Directors.
The company stands for the values
of quality, trust, honesty, responsibility,
innovation, sustainability and
family. Reliability as well as innovative
and entrepreneurial actions
allowed the company to grow
steadily into today's modern Swiss
transport and logistics company
with locations in Arlesheim and
Zwingen. With a total of 70 trucks,
four delivery vans and 77 trailers
and semi-trailers, Felix Transport
AG is today a transport and logistics
service provider known far beyond
northwestern Switzerland and can
count on a loyal and satisfied
clientele, especially from the Basel
region. "We carry what you need
every day," says Managing Director
Fabian Felix.
Core competencies include
general cargo, part/complete load,
dangerous goods, crane, refrigerated/thermos-
and pharmaceutical
transports according to GDP (Good
Distribution Practice). Distribution
takes place within 24 hours in
Switzerland, respectively 48 hours
in peripheral and mountain regions.
The cooperation with reliable
partners makes it possible to
transport the goods in a short time
even to remote places. In order to
meet the constant demands of
digitalization and to make paperless
deliveries in the future, a state-ofthe-art
transport management
system was implemented in February
2023.
Comprehensive logistics services
are offered on a total area of 33,000
m2 at the main warehouse in
Arlesheim and the external warehouses
in Schoren Arlesheim,
Breitenbach and Grellingen. This
includes, in addition to the profes-
sional storage of pallets and heavy
goods such as boxes, picking,
packing, container handling (loading
and unloading) and display
construction.
«Felix For Future»
Environmental protection and
responsible handling of natural
resources have always been anchored
in the mission statement of Felix
Transport AG. Since Fabian and
Manuela Felix took over the business
in 2022, all sustainability efforts
have been summarized under the
slogan "Felix For Future". For Felix,
sustainability also includes not
making short-term profit-oriented
decisions, but pursuing long-term
goals so that the independent
company can be handed over in good
health to the fourth generation on its
100th anniversary. As an employer
for 130 employees from the region,
the idea of social sustainability is
integrated into all decisions.
With the procurement of two
LNG trucks in 2021, which emit 20
percent less CO2 and are quieter on
the road, and the procurement of a
CO2-neutral electric truck in 2022,
the foundation stone of the sustainability
fleet was laid. Since then, the
e-truck has been charged at the
fast-charging station using mostly
in-house solar energy. The photovoltaic
system on the company's own
roof comprises 1008 solar modules
and produces around 375,000
kilowatt hours of solar energy per
year. This is enough to cover around
60 percent of the company's own
requirements on the entire site,
which is fully equipped with LED
light sources. The biggest challenges
for expanding the electric fleet are
the investment costs for electric
trucks, which are a three to four
times higher than for diesel trucks,
and the expensive expansion of the
charging infrastructure on the site,
with the corresponding high-performance
connections to the power
grid. Despite the political uncertainties,
such as the unclear future of the
HVF and the energy supply, we will
continue to invest in the expansion
of the sustainability fleet out of
conviction.
Since 1985, Felix has been a
training company for the promotion
of young professionals in order to
proactively counteract the shortage
of skilled workers. For this reason,
10 percent of the staff are apprentices
in the professions of road
transport specialist EFZ (Swiss
Federal Certificate of Proficiency),
logistics specialist EFZ and transport
commercial apprenticeship EFZ
(Swiss Federal Certificate of Proficiency).
This makes it the largest
training company in the industry in
the region of northwestern Switzerland.
As an elementary link between
the producing and trading companies
and their end customers, Felix
will continue to make an important
contribution to a powerful and
efficient logistics chain in the future.
Company profile DERO AG
Precision mechanics
from the «Tschoppenhof»
As a reliable partner in precision
mechanics, DERO AG in
Liedertswil manufactures
high-precision components in
small and medium series on
behalf of its worldwide clientele
- from the raw part to the
assembly of entire subassemblies.
Reto Anklin
«Precision mechanics has been our
core competence for over 75 years,»,
says Pascal Degen, third-generation
owner and managing director of
DERO AG. The clientele of the
company, which is domiciled in
Liedertswil, comes from the fields of
mechanical engineering, medical
technology, semiconductor technology,
energy technology and pharmaceuticals.
In the rural idyll of the
hilly Oberbaselbieter landscape, one
would hardly expect to find a company
that manufactures high-precision
components that are in demand from
customers from all over the world.
Innovative solutions
"Together with our customers, we
develop innovative solutions customized
to their needs at the best
price-performance ratio and on
binding delivery dates," says Degen.
Quality and precision have the
30 Baselland Business

highest priority at DERO AG. This is
guaranteed by the state-of-the-art
machinery and the qualified and
motivated team of around 46 employees
and 3 apprentices.
The Liedertswil-based company
is an expert in turning, milling and
grinding. For the refinements, such
as heat treatments or electroplating,
they work with selected partners.
DERO AG manufactures the highprecision
components in small and
medium series - from the raw part
to the assembly of entire subassemblies.
Rurally connected to the world
DERO AG was founded in Liedertswil
in 1946 by Franz Degen senior and
Werner Roth (hence the name DEgen
ROth) and has been active as a
supplier in the field of precision
mechanics ever since. From the very
beginning, the company from the
tranquil Tschoppenhof - as Liedertswil
is also called - worked with
customers all over the world. Soon,
with the development of centric
clamps and clamping solutions, the
company built up its own manufacturing
program, which became known
far beyond the Swiss border.
DERO AG is particularly proud of
its latest grinding machine. It is the
largest investment the company has
made so far. The machine can grind
round parts up to 500 mm in diameter
together inside and out. A robotic
arm, which can carry up to 165
kilograms, automatically guides
pallets into the grinding machine,
where the workpieces are ground and
measured in one step. "What fascinates
me about this system is that we
designed the machine automation
concept together with Swiss people.
The machine was made in Japan, the
automation in Sweden and the
software for it in the Netherlands.
The result of the collaboration of
teams from all these countries is now
at Tschoppenhof as the first plant of
its kind," says Pascal Degen.
• Precicion
What exactly does precision
mean? And is it measurable? A
simple example shows what is
meant by precision in precision
mechanics: "Our measurable
tolerance is about 60 times more
precise than a human hair," says
Pascal Degen. He is president of
the industry association Swissmechanic
beider Basel and has
led the company since 2020.
• Turning
Turning is often defined as an
exciting manufacturing process
in which the workpiece generates
the cutting movement through
its rotation and the (single-edged)
tool generates the feed
movement. On modern and
powerful CNC lathe machines,
partly automated, the employees
of DERO AG produce round
workpieces mainly from steel,
stainless steel and aluminum.
• Milling
Milling is an exciting manufacturing
process for the production
of workpieces in cubic form. In
contrast to turning, the
cutting movement
necessary for chip
removal is generated by rotation
of the cutting tool, compared to
the workpiece firmly clamped in
the machine table. At DERO AG,
further processing takes place on
automated CNC machining
centers, which can continue
production until late at night.
• Grinding
Grinding is used for fine and
final machining of workpieces
with very precise accuracies that
cannot be achieved by turning
and milling. The abrasive
manufacturing process is used to
refine surfaces and define final
contours. On the high-precision
grinding machines, DERO AG
can work with an accuracy of up
to 0.001 mm.

Whether as a founding partner of
the "Swiss Innovation Challenge"
or with its "100 fürs Baselbiet"
initiative: BLKB promotes innovation
in Basel-Land - soon also
with a competence center for
corporate customers in Allschwil.
Why does BLKB promote
innovation?
Beat Röthlisberger: According to
the Cantonal Bank Act, we have the
mandate to contribute to the balanced
economic and social development
of the Canton of Basel-Landschaft
and the region of
Northwestern Switzerland. We want
to act as an innovation driver and
improve the conditions so that
promising and innovative business
ideas can be developed and implemented.
«100 fürs
Baselbiet»
«100 fürs Baselbiet» is
an initiative of BLKB,
the University of
Applied Sciences Northwestern
Switzerland
FHNW and the Standortförderung
(site promotion)
Baselland. Since
the beginning of 2020,
it has been supporting
innovative SMEs and
startups with a connection
to Baselbiet.
Currently, 36 companies
are being supported
with a total amount of
13.9 million Swiss
francs and consulting
services. During the
application process,
the business idea and
financial plan are
first examined. This is
followed by a pitch to
the Advisory Board. It
consists of well-known
company personalities.
www.blkb.ch/100fuersbb
Hannes Caj: Our innovation
promotion is based on several
initiatives that are interlinked and
that we are constantly optimizing.
The first was the launch of the
"Swiss Innovation Challenge" in
2014 together with the University of
Applied Sciences Northwestern
Switzerland FHNW and the Baselland
Economic Chamber. This gave
rise to the "100 fürs Baselbiet" credit
program at the beginning of 2020
(see box), which we have since been
able to develop into a program for
regional participation.
How is BLKB involved in the
"Swiss Innovation Challenge"?
Röthlisberger: We are the main
sponsor and contribute the expertise
of our client advisors. In addition,
as a member of the Steering Committee,
I am able to help shape the
event. I am always impressed by the
business ideas and passion of the
candidates. Last year, for example, I
was impressed by the third-place
winner, the medtech start-up
Spirecut. It develops and sells highly
complex instruments for hand
surgery.
Caj: Spirecut recently became part
of the "100 fürs Baselbiet" initiative.
Not least because of this, the startup
moved its headquarters from
Fribourg to Muttenz at the beginning
of the year.
What is the difference between
"Swiss Innovation Challenge" and
"100 fürs Baselbiet"?
Röthlisberger: The "Swiss Innovation
Challenge" gives us direct
access to innovative companies that
we want to attract to the region or
keep in the region with "100 fürs
Baselbiet". To this end, BLKB provides,
among other things, venture
capital for innovative projects that
find it difficult to obtain financing
through the usual channels - without
diluting its capital too much in
the process.
Recently, BLKB has even expanded
its financial commitment.
The keyword "equity investments"
was mentioned just now.
Caj: Thanks to a conversion option
in the BLKB loan, promising SMEs
and start-ups have been able to
convert their loan into equity
financing from BLKB since this year.
They benefit from this twice: the
financing does not have to be repaid,
and BLKB's credibility as a co-shareholder
helps in negotiations with
customers and investors.
"100 fürs Baselbiet" wants to
enable 100 Baselbiet-related
companies to take a decisive step
in their further development. Is
the initiative on track?
Röthlisberger: Absolutely. In the
target group, it has developed into
an important pillar of innovation in
the region of northwestern Switzerland.
Since its launch, over 300
companies have applied, and 36 are
now part of the initiative. In the
future, they will benefit from even
more intensive support.
In what way?
Caj: The next step in our innovation
support is the opening of a competence
center for startups and corporate
customers in the Alba House in
the new BaseLink site in Allschwil.
This will bring us even closer to the
companies and enable us to provide
them with optimum support in their
further development. The move-in is
planned for the first quarter of 2024.
The 3 phases of the SIC
The Swiss Innovation Challenge starts every year with the kick-off event. After that,
the competition is divided into three phases:
Phase 1 – Sharpening the business idea and creating a short presentation.
The first phase of the Swiss Innovation Challenge involves sharpening the business
idea and preparing a short presentation within three months. The prerequisite
for admission to the first selection presentation, the first pitch, is the formulation
of one’s own innovation idea on two A4 pages. The first pitch lasts three minutes.
After that, the jury decides which participants belong to that half of the field of
participants that will make it to the next phase.
Phase 2 – Translating the business idea into a business plan
The second phase of the Swiss Innovation Challenge lasts another three months.
During this time, the business idea is fleshed out, a business plan is drawn up and
the presentation is expanded. A prerequisite for admission to the second selection
presentation, the second pitch, is the formulation of a professional business plan
based on the innovation concept. This business plan should comprise 15 to 30
pages. The second pitch lasts five minutes. As in Phase 1, the jury again divides
the field of participants. Only half make it to Phase 3.
Phase 3 – Implementation plan and preparation of a final presentation
In the third phase of the Swiss Innovation Challenge, the business plan is refined
and the presentation finalized. A prerequisite for admission to the third selection
presentation, the final pitch, is an implementation plan. A core element of the
sales documentation is a video pitch that presents the innovation idea as well as
possible. The third pitch lasts seven minutes. After that, the jury will determine
the winners of the Swiss Innovation Challenge and the two special prizes.
The winners will be announced at the Award-Winning-Ceremony. In addition to
practical experience, networking in the business community, sparring and contacts
with potential funders, the Swiss Innovation Challenge also offers prizes for participants.
The winner receives CHF 20,000 and the runners-up CHF 5,000 each.
The artists of the
Day of business
Three top restaurateurs cook an exclusive, multi-course menu at the VIP Networking Dinner.
Darren Benhar, Flavio Fermi and Rolf Mürner are renowned artists in their field. They spoil, surprise
and delight their guests time and again with their creations.
Patrick Herr
Flavio Fermi
Flavio Fermi is a star chef and took over the Ackermannshof in
Basel in 2021. This means he is back in the city where it all
began with his training at the "Gundeldingerhof". Numerous
stations abroad followed: Sylt, Hamburg, Bangkok. In the
"Osteria TRE" of the Bad Bubendorf Hotel, he cooked his way to a
Michelin star and 16 GaultMillau points. Now he unpacks his
culinary backpack in the venerable "Ackermannshof" and presents
a modern interpretation of Mediterranean cuisine.
Fine dining in a soothing and personal atmosphere, again
awarded 1 star Michelin and 16 points by GaultMillau.
Interview Rainer Maria Salzgeber
«As a presenter,
I'm also a
micro-entrepreneur»
Rainer Maria Salzgeber (54)
needs no introduction to
anyone. Salzi (his nickname) is
the most prominent face of
SRF (Swiss television), where
he has worked for almost 30
years. For 9 years, he has
accompanied the Swiss national
soccer team, hosted sports
programs, galas and, since
2019, the "Donnschtig Jass."
He has also become a permanent
fixture on the Day of
business, which he has been
hosting since 2014.
Adrian Jäggi
After a four-year hiatus, the Day of
business is back. Now also in the
modernized St. Jakobshalle. What
are you looking forward to most?
Rainer Maria Salzgeber: If I'm
honest...to the tingling atmosphere
in the hall. It is also very special for
me to be able to stand on stage in
front of so many people and guide
them through the Day of business.
At such moments, nervousness
triumphs over routine. But as soon
as it starts, the nervousness is gone.
And of course, I'm also looking
forward to the top-class speakers
and in particular to Federal Councilor
Albert Rösti.
Do you prepare specifically for
the Day of Comerce?
Rainer Maria Salzgeber: I always
prepare for my events as professionally
as possible. The most important
thing is the meetings beforehand. I
want to meet all the organizers
personally in advance. This is the
only way I can correctly identify
people's intentions and wishes and
then implement them. For this I like
to drive to Pratteln several times.
Otherwise, it is important to prepare
for the various
speakers. As a
non-business expert,
I always try to take
the position of the
audience. So, to
speak as an extended
arm of the people in
the hall.
44 Baselland Business

What connection do you actually
have to the SME world?
Rainer Maria Salzgeber: I was
co-owner of Baracca Zermatt in
Kloten for several years. The same
concept also exists in Basel. I
looked into this world a bit, but I
was glad to have an experienced
professional at my side. As a
moderator, I am somehow also a
micro-entrepreneur.
Professionally, you're in the Basel
region from time to time. Do you
actually prefer to come to the
Swiss Indoors, an FCB match or
the national soccer team?
Rainer Maria Salzgeber: A difficult
question at the moment: the FCB in
a dramatic downward lane, the
Swiss Indoors without Federer...I
honestly have to put that on the
national team. But basically, Basel
with its unique sports enthusiasm is
always worth a visit: whether it's
tennis or soccer.
You report on the sports world
every day. Do you have a favorite
sport yourself - and can you
practice it in your free time?
Rainer Maria Salzgeber: I've discovered
cycling for myself in recent
years. Whereby sport is a big word
in this context. I simply enjoy riding
my racing bike through the countryside
and now also over mountain
passes. Something like that would
have been impossible in the past. On
a bike, you can switch off wonderfully
and develop creative ideas.
You are also said to be a talented
clarinet player. Was a career in
music never an issue?
Rainer Maria Salzgeber: Music was
actually my greatest talent. However,
I wasn't disciplined enough.
Practicing alone in a small room for
hours on end - that was definitely
not my thing. But it was still sufficient
to become a military brass
player. (laughs)
You have been providing entertainment
and hosting the
"Donnschtig Jass" since 2019. Did
you feel comfortable on this stage
right from the start?
Rainer Maria Salzgeber: It's a great
honor to be asked to host a show like
this. To be honest, I had not expected
such a challenge. I approached the
challenge with the necessary respect
and felt super comfortable from the
very first moment on. And I was
supported by the fantastic team.
What was the most formative
experience in four years of
"Donnschtig Jass"?
Rainer Maria Salzgeber: The summer
of 2023 was incredible. We had
over 50 percent viewing figures and
an extremely large number of people
in the seats. The last broadcast with
over 6000 people in Gossau was
extremely impressive for me and
showed what this broadcast can
trigger.
About the person
Rainer Maria Salzgeber has worked for Swiss television SRF
since 1994 and is one of Switzerland's most popular moderators.
He was voted Swiss Sports Journalist of the Year for his
moderation during UEFA EURO 2008 and received the Swiss
Television Award. His greatest love is football: so Salzi has
been accompanying the matches of the Swiss national football
team since September 2014. Since 2019, he has also hosted the
Swiss entertainment classic «Donnschtig Jass.»
In addition to his work with Swiss television, Salzgeber is
also a sought-after and multilingual event presenter. The
man from the Upper Valais feels at home on any stage. Man does
not live by sport alone: «Performances with a political,
economic or social background are always special challenges
for me, which I gladly face and approach with the appropriate
meticulousness.»
Berufsschau
Facelift for the
Basel-Landschaft
Vocational Show
The Berufsschau Baselland
took place for the first time in
the St. Jakobshalle from November
15 to 19. It is the largest
vocational show in Switzerland
with around 20,000 visitors and
more than 80 exhibition stands.
Adrian Jäggi
«The pure stand area this year was
more than 3300 square meters, and
we occupied a total of around 7000
square meters in the St. Jakobshalle,
which was already a new dimension,»
says Marc Scherrer, Deputy
Director of the Economic Chamber
and Head of the Competence Center
for Vocational Education and
Training, looking back on the fair.
Since he took over the post in the
fall of 2022, there have been a
number of changes in vocational
education in Basel-Landschaft -
among other things, he set up the
Competence Center for Vocational
Education and Training (see box).
Scherrer is very satisfied with the
premiere in the St. Jakobshalle (see
interview). The effort was worthwhile
- especially the supporting program
did not miss its effect and found a
great echo. The spectacle was opened
by State Secretary Dr. Martina
Hirayama and Monica Gschwind,
President of the Basel-Landschaft
government.
The young visitors could get in
the mood for the program at many
booths. Many competitions, games
of skill, wheels of fortune and
quizzes beckoned. In addition, they
could drive a model crane, control
an electric excavator or play a game
of skill with a forklift. However, the
central point of the vocational show
was clearly to help the young people
with their professional orientation.
This starts with helping them to
identify their own skills and interests.
This step is often not so easy,
because even in 2023 professions
often still have only one gender and,
in some cases not own’s wishes, but
those of parents or friends are
decisive in the choice of profession.
Information, education and guidance
are therefore essential prerequisites
for a strengths-based vocational
choice. Experts from various industries
and professional associations
were on hand at the career show to
help young people and their parents
make their choice.
Great supporting program
Another highlight was the Apprentices'
Day, which was held in parallel to
the vocational show. Here, Rüdiger
Maas, founder of the Generations Institute
in Augsburg, spoke on the topic
of "Surviving an apprenticeship as an
apprentice" and showed what challenges
Generation Z faces in training.
As part of the Vocational Show, the
Baselbieter Tischmesse (Table Fair)
also took place for the first time.
Companies that had one or more
apprenticeship positions to fill met
interested students at this event. Even
in the run-up to the event, interest
was already high.
Competence Center
Vocational Education
The Competence Center
Vocational Education
and Training encompasses
very many areas and
was established to
increase the visibility
of the department. The
department's activities
include visits to all of
Basel-Landschaft's
secondary schools, the
Career with Vocational
Baccalaureate program,
and the Business Meets
School program. In
addition, Marc Scherrer's
team regularly
organizes events such as
the Day of Apprentices,
is responsible for the
vocational show and has
launched "BL-Skills," a
new magazine on vocational
training. All of
this and more is united
with the apprenticeship
association under the
label Vocational Training
Competence Center.
Interview Marc Scherrer
«The effort was
worth it»
Marc Scherrer (37) has been
Deputy Director of the
Baselland Economic Chamber
for just over a year and
heads the Vocational Training
Competence Center. He
is responsible for the vocational
show Baselland.
The 2023 Vocational
Show is over. What is
your conclusion?
I am very satisfied. We
put a lot of effort into it
in the run-up. That has
definitely paid off. The
feedback from visitors
and exhibitors was very
positive. That gives us
courage for the future.
This time, practically
everything was new.
What was the reason
for that?
With the move to the St.
Jakobshalle, a new
setting was required. Then we
have a new team of employees,
many new exhibitors and an
important factor was also
digitalization. The website was
outdated and had to be relaunched.
All this led us to decide to
renew pretty much everything.
What are the advantages of a
vocational apprenticeship
over a baccalaureate?
I don't want to play one off
against the other; both models
have their justification. But in
my opinion, a vocational
apprenticeship is an ingenious
foundation for entering the
professional world. With a
vocational apprenticeship, you
are optimally prepared for the
future; you have comprehensive
career opportunities. In
many areas, they are even
better than if you decide to go
to high school.
Is enough being done in the
canton of Basel-Landschaft
to make vocational apprenticeships
more attractive?
Some measures have already
been taken, but not enough in
my opinion. We have not yet
reached the goal; we have and
will demand further measures
politically.
Where do we still need to
apply the lever?
We certainly still have some
political homework to do and
should generally rethink
vocational orientation in
schools. There is an urgent
need for vocational education
to be given a higher priority in
schools again. Another
issue is practical
training and trial
placements, which are
very difficult to access
today because there is
little or no coordination.
We as the Economic
Chamber are also
challenged to expand
our actions and do even
more to strengthen
vocational education.
A vocational training
experience room is to
be created at the HDW
one day. Can you
reveal anything concrete
about that already?
We want to create a place
where young people can find
out about vocational training
digitally in a very modern
way. Together with the industry
associations, we want to
create an offering where
students can get first-hand
information directly on site.
The goal is for this offering to
be up and running in about a
year.
Award. At the HDW it is also
possible to organize entire event
series, where professional communication
and networking are made
possible. Whatever the customer
(companies, associations or private
individuals) decides in the end: At
the HDW he can expect a professional
offer tailored to his needs.
IWF Event Management (see
portrait on the other side) is also
happy to take over the organization
of your event at the HDW, if requested
by the customer. The service
includes the determination of the
wishes and needs, the development
of the concept and of course catering
and hospitality. Whether
business event, panel discussion,
general meeting or anniversary
party - every event will be a success.
The outstanding image and
sound technology in the auditorium
also contribute to this - the eye-catcher
is an 11-meter LED screen.
Among the biggest events held at
HDW are the SME Networking
Grill, the Spring Apéro, the HDW
Afterwork Happy Hour or the New
Year's Apéro. These are social
events with a lot of atmosphere.
They are marked prominently on
the agenda.
IWF-Event-Manager
The man for the
special moments
Henry Strähl: He is the man
behind the events at HDW. The
man who pulls all the strings to
ensure that every detail is just
right in the end. A portrait of
the IMF event manager.
Chris Stoecklin
In 2019, the Business Day was held for
the last time in the St. Jakobshalle. A
pandemic later and with sufficient
start-up time, the event presents itself
this year in new splendor. Around
3000 visitors are expected. A lot of
appetizers and drinks are consumed.
Even more kilometers of cables will be
laid. 100'000 things that have to be
taken care of. But only one man is
responsible for organizing the event:
Henry Strähl.
The trained chef and hotel specialist
knows the scene like the back of
his hand. Events are his life. They have
accompanied him throughout his
entire career. Today, he is responsible
for around 70 events a year. Whether
in the Haus der Wirtschaft or at event
locations in the region, such as the one
in the St. Jakobshalle. Every detail
must be planned. The timing must be
perfect. A Herculean task with a
simple and appealing goal: "I want to
create moments that people remember
and that even bring a smile to
their faces when they go home," says
Strähl.
Create moments.
Create an experience.
Not only for
the visitors, but also
for himself. The visit of
Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin to
the Baselland Business Gala has left
a lasting impression on Henry
Strähl. The sheer scale of organization
impressed even the experienced
organizer: "All the preparatory
work with the federal police, with
the cantonal police, with the
inspection of the building and the
security dispositive. That was
tremendously impressive".
Solution-oriented acting
Where everything has to be just right
down to the smallest detail, perfectionism
is usually not far away.
Henry Strähl would not describe
himself as a perfectionist, but: "You
certainly have to work in a wellstructured
way and have a certain
methodology so that everything fits
together. In the end, I have a personal
ambition on an event. If this is
fulfilled in the end, I'm satisfied.
This also includes unforeseeable
factors. Unpredictabilities. They are
part of the everyday life of every
event manager. If the elaborate plan
unexpectedly does not fully work
out, calm is the order of the day. "It
does no good in these moments to
look for the faults or the culprit. Solution-oriented
acting is the key," says
the man who himself drove up to the
loading ramp of the beverage supplier
shortly before the start of the
event due to delivery problems.
That this does not happen on the
"new" day of the economy in the St.
Jakobshalle was taken care of.
Thanks to the signature of Henry
Strähl. A major event, which presents
itself in a new look, but has not
forgotten the old virtues. Finding the
balance between the tried and tested,
new and further development is a
fine line, as Henry Strähl himself
describes: "Of course we want to offer
visitors something new, but we also
want to create a recognition value.
Due to the corona-related interruption,
we had the chance to start anew.
The further development of an event
is always important. Otherwise,
people will say at some stage: "We've
seen it all before.
Location Promotion Baselland
Innovation is
a strength of the
Basel regions
Thomas Kübler, head of Location
Promotion Baselland,
wants to position the Basel
region as an attractive business
location. According to the
UBS Cantonal Competitiveness
Indicator, Basel-Land Canton is
ranked sixth. One of the great
strengths of Basel-Landschaft
is its innovative strength.
However, there is a need for
action in the labor market or
the cost environment.
Adrian Jäggi
Cantonal competitiveness high
"The competitiveness of cantons is
regularly reviewed and measured by
various organizations. One widely
respected benchmark is the UBS
Cantonal Competitiveness Indicator
(CCI). It is surveyed every two years
and assesses the competitiveness of
the cantons based on eight pillars.
The most recent CCI was published
in summer 2023. According to
this, the canton of Basel-Landschaft
occupies sixth place among all Swiss
cantons and places itself in the
group with high competitiveness.
The continuous improvement in the
ranking over the last few years
could be continued in 2023 and the
position of Basel-Landschaft could
be consolidated behind the urban
cantons.
UBS continues to rank the
economic structure, innovative
strength, accessibility and catchment
area among the economic
strengths of the Basel region.
Relative weaknesses are identified in
the areas of public finances, the
labor market and the cost
environment.
Keeping an eye on factors that
can be influenced
UBS distinguishes between changeable
and unchangeable factors. In
terms of unchangeable factors, the
canton of Basel-Landschaft ranks
sixth, as in the overall ranking.
However, it is ranked lower for
factors that can be influenced. All
three topics with relative weaknesses
belong to the influenceable
factors.
• Looking at the labor market,
the demographic structure
of the Basel area is striking.
With a high proportion of
people over 65 in the population
and few young people,
the labor shortage will
continue to become more
severe. Incentives must be
created for young people to
52 Baselland Business

move to Baselbiet and for the
Baselbiet population to
participate more in the
workforce. Family and
school supplementary offers
must include an incentive
towards a higher workload.
• • In the cost environment,
income and wealth taxes are
addressed. Here, the Basel
area must become more
attractive for higher incomes
and assets in order to make
progress in this topic area.
• • Finally, efforts must be made
to control the major cost
drivers in public finances and
to strengthen the revenue side
by attracting new people and
companies.
According to UBS, innovative
strength is also one of the factors
of competitiveness that can be
influenced. This is where the Basel
region shows one of its great
strengths. A broad-based industry
structure, companies that invest
in research and development and
good interaction between universities,
technical colleges and
companies, supported by private,
state or mixed-funded knowledge
and technology transfer organizations
make a positive impact. And
the corporate tax system is also
designed to support research and
development. This is where the
greatest focus must continue to be
placed. Only innovative strength
ensures long-term prosperity.
Making more of what's available
Rank 6 for factors that cannot be
influenced, rank 14 for factors that
can be influenced. Overall, the
canton of Basel-Landschaft lands in
6th place in the cantonal competitive
rankings. To put it more pointedly,
it can be said that we in Basel-
Landschaft have a good level of
location qualities, but make not
sufficient of them. This is where we
have to start and stay on. The
pleasing overall positioning must
not tempt us to slacken our efforts.
The focus must be on providing
positive incentives for labor force
participation, making the tax
situation more attractive and
keeping the innovative capacity of
companies high."
Digital-World
The Basel region
as a new hub for
digitization
«What if I told you that there
would be a platform where
companies, innovators and
digitization experts would meet
and talk about the latest digital
topics? A platform which offers
space for discussion and
exchange and at the same time
an interface to the latest
digital topics? This is exactly
the place we have created and
it is called «Digital-World», says
Patrick Gross, CEO of IWF AG.
ZT: Digital-World - The largest
digital hub in Northwestern
Switzerland.
The challenge of digitization is far
from completed in many companies.
There is a need in the SME economy
to deal with the topic and learn from
functioning examples. «Digital-
World» is intended to function as a
hub that brings together committed
companies and players from all
sectors. The knowledge gained in
this way should also be able to be
passed on to regional companies.
«Digital-World» is intended to
provide an impetus here in the Basel
region to devote more attention to
the increasingly important tech
industry. After all, the digital
transformation is permanently
changing all sectors of the economy,
which is why this megatrend must
be recognized and followed. Especially
because there is still no event
here in the region of northwestern
Switzerland that covers this topic.
54 Baselland Business

«With «Digital-World», we are
strengthening Basel as a business
location and want to become the
largest digital hub in Northwestern
Switzerland,» says Gross.
ZT: Our highlights - from chainsaws
to shark riding
How do I reach Generation Z(future)?
At the Digital-World kick-off
on August 24, everything revolved
around digital recruiting and how
companies can win the «War for
Talents» and reach the generation of
tomorrow. Top speakers Yaël Meier,
«Gen Z» expert, and Honorary
President of FC Basel Bernhard
Heusler took the stage. The participants
learned directly from the voice
of «Gen Z» what makes Generation
Z(future) tick as well as their demands
on today's employers. For
companies, it is fundamental to
know where their target group is
and moves in order to be able to
reach them exactly there. In her
breakout session, Tosca Stuck, iCop
of the Basel-Stadt Cantonal Police,
brought the participants closer to
the relevance of social media and
how the Basel-Stadt Cantonal
Police succeeded in reaching Gen Z.
Further companies like Bechtle,
Jobeagle, Baloise, or Swiss ICT
(salary study and working conditions)
shared their exciting use cases
and experiences in digital recruiting.
Are you already riding the shark
of change? If the participants took
anything home from the October
event, it was that they have to ride
the shark of change. But what does
that mean exactly? At the business
conference on October 19, the focus
was on the evolution and disruption
of digital business models. The
keynotes by Emmanuel Wandji,
Head of Operator at ZEAM and
transformation expert Dietmar
Dahmen focused in particular on
digital transformation. The king of
transformation delivered an
unforgettable keynote with lots of
action on stage. His message was
clear: You have to get away from
the cushions of comfort and ride
the shark of change to be able to
move forward with digitalization
in your company. This was also
confirmed by Thomas Steinemann,
CEO of DuBois et fils, in his breakout
session, telling how he linked
the analog world with the digital
world. The event ended with an
exciting panel discussion with
government councilor Thomi
Jourdan, Prof. Dr. Michael von
Kutzschenbach and the two keynote
speakers Dietmar Dahmen and
Emmanuel Wandji.
ZT: See you again next year
Patrick Gross sums up the situation
after the first two events: «We are
only at the beginning of bringing
digitization closer to the heart of
the Basel region. Nevertheless, we
have already been able to reach
more than 500 participants with
two events, inspire more than 50
companies to join us, and attract the
attention of more than 500,000
people on social media. We want to
establish a community where other
companies can also use this unique
platform for themselves. The
positive feedback confirms and
reinforces all the more that we are
on the right track. While Digital-
World was initially just an idea, we
are already looking to the future
with confidence. We look forward to
continuing the «Digital-World»
event series and are already announcing
two new dates: September
11 and 12, 2024!»
Energy
«The goal cannot
be renunciation»
The security of energy supply in
Switzerland remains in doubt.
Thanks to a mild winter last year,
a possible shortage was avoided.
However, this is no guarantee
that this will be the case again
this winter. Little snow and rain
led to a lack of water in the
reservoirs. The drought this year
resulted in limited production of
hydropower and nuclear energy.
The government's call to the
Swiss people to save energy
continues. The fact is that the
situation remains tense.
Chris Stoecklin
FDP Councillor and president of
the Energy League Christine Frey:
How do you assess the current
situation of the energy nation
Switzerland?
The uncertainty remains for the
coming winter. This is all the more
annoying because the problems are
homemade. The energy policy of the
past decade was unbalanced and
imprudent. With the total focus on
sustainability, equally important
goals such as security of supply and
affordability were downright
forgotten. And the challenges are
not getting any smaller: decarbonization
through electrification is
increasing the demand for electricity,
while at the same time nuclear
power capacities that are being
eliminated have to be replaced. The
dependence on foreign countries
does not make the situation any
easier either.
In June, the Swiss people voted to
accept the Climate Protection Act.
Does that effectively solve all the
problems?
The climate hype has had an effect;
that has to be conceded to the driving
forces. However, the problems
surrounding climate change will by no
means be solved by re-educating
society in small Switzerland with
more and more rules and bans.
In your opinion, do the media and
politicians also deal too polemically
with the topic of "energy"?
Thank you for this steep pass. Yes, of
course, from my point of view the
reporting is extremely one-sided. This
stirs up fears that put water on the mill
of the extreme left-green demands. It
is almost impossible to demand a
pragmatic approach to the issue in this
discussion. I have experienced that
one is then immediately portrayed as a
climate change denier. The debates in
the district council sometimes take on
almost religious overtones. That serves
no one's interests.
Is this also a problem of lack of
knowledge about the matter? A
photovoltaic system is not the same
as a solar collector.
Half-knowledge or lack of knowledge
actually leads to the fact that discussions
often cannot be held on a targetoriented
level. The political debate
should not get lost in technical details
such as the efficiency of different
systems. Rather, it is the task of
politics to define the principles and
guard rails according to which the
economy and society should approach
energy supply and the
reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
in the future.
Opinions differ on the subject of
«energy supply». There are
countless scenarios from countless
experts. What do you think is
realistic?
There is no such thing as looking into
a crystal ball. But we do know that
research is being carried out at full
speed around the world on a wide
variety of energy generation systems
that can be used for sustainable
production. This means that we must
not base our climate strategy on the
current state of knowledge, but must
be absolutely open to new technologies.
Furthermore, it would be
desirable for us to return the political
focus to sufficient availability and
price. Increasing the degree of
self-sufficiency is right, but it is just
as important that this self-sufficiency
is realized at competitive prices. But
for that to happen, fundamental,
policy decisions must be allowed to be
debated. For example, whether § 115,
paragraph 2, of the cantonal constitution
may be deleted "It (the canton)
shall work to ensure that no nuclear
power plants based on the principle
of nuclear fission, reprocessing
plants for nuclear fuel and storage
sites for medium and highly radioactive
residues are built on the cantonal
territory or in its neighborhood."
In your opinion, do projects - such
as individual wind turbines in
56 Baselland Business

communities like Muttenz - have
more of a symbolic character than
an effective benefit for the energy
transition?
The wind turbine in Muttenz is not
much more than a marketing
campaign. No matter what natural
forces are to be used to generate
energy, a lot of it is always needed to
be able to produce cost-effectively.
Wind turbines are therefore suitable
in windy regions, such as coastal
areas. Finally, excessive subsidies in
the energy sector distort the cost
picture. If the energy supplier does
not make a loss on the bottom line, it
is certainly not because of favorable
production conditions. This is where
policymakers need to pull the lever
as well.
In your opinion, where is Switzerland
headed in terms of energy?
We can't avoid discussing large-scale
electricity production plants in
Switzerland. Mrs. Leuthard has
flanked her nuclear phase-out with
gas-fired power plants as a Plan B.
But gas-fired electricity is anything
but clean. Therefore, a discussion
about nuclear power is needed - at
least as an interim solution. New
reactor types are safer, more efficient
and, above all, clean. Thanks to
smaller reactors, they can provide
decentralized stabilization of the
power supply. But other technologies
must also be included in the overall
picture. After all, the goal cannot be
abandonment, but rather a secure,
economical, feasible and increasingly
sustainable energy supply.
WHO
IS
WHO
The strength of
the companies
Baselland Business - that's
around 100 important manufacturing
companies in the
canton of Basel-Landschaft.
The focus is deliberately on the
manufacturing companies,
which form the backbone of the
economy with their goal-oriented
and innovative work.
Mathias Welti
Producing companies form the
basis for the prosperity of other
sectors of the economy and are the
foundation of Basel-Land's high
level of prosperity. Within the
framework of Baselland Busi-ness,
the Basel-Landschaft Economic
Chamber has made it its task to
emphasize the economic importance
and to increase social awareness.
In this context, these companies
are visited annually in order to feel
the pulse directly at the source.
Various topics relevant to the
company are discussed and points
of view are sought. However, the
question of the concerns and
challenges of the companies with
regard to the framework conditions
and location factors that can be
actively influenced by the cantonal
play-ers is also central. Four topics
are currently being addressed as
examples.
Mobility: Short distances for
employees and the transport of
goods are a decisive locational
ad-vantage of the Canton of Basel-
Landschaft. The increase in mobility
- with whatever drive tech-nology
or energy source - is a fact.
The necessary infrastructure
adjustments do not tolerate any
polemics and no postponement.
Upcoming mobility projects must
be discussed without preju-dice,
planned with foresight and implemented
immediately.
Shortage of labor and skilled
workers: Factors such as demographic
change, global networking,
digitization and unabatedly
increasing demands for efficiency,
coupled with the movement
to-ward a new definition of worklife
balance or, indeed, life balance,
are driving the shift toward an
employee market - all of it amplified
by the immense power of
social media. The battle for labor
and skilled workers is in full swing,
challenging more than just employer
marketing. Be-cause an
attractive and well-thought-out
corporate image will not only make
the company more attractive, it
will also reduce staff fluctuation.
Important immediate issues here
revolve around access to crossborder
workers and workers from
third countries.
Energy shortage: The past
movements on the energy market
and the partly exorbitant multiplications
of energy costs have shaken
many companies. Existing procurement
channels must be questioned
in terms of their political
stability, and the switch to renewable
energy sources must always be
in proportion to economically
sensible implementation options.
In the end, what counts is energy
that is available for production at a
price that guarantees planning
security on the one hand and
global competitiveness on the
other - in whatever form and from
wherever.
Vocational training: Precision,
care, quality awareness,
reliability, adherence to deadlines,
inno-vation, flexibility - values
that stand for "Made in Baselland".
It is only with these values that
local companies are able to compensate
for the tendency toward
higher production costs and hold
their own on an international level.
And these values also stand for the
DNA of vocational training - the
foundation of manufacturing
companies.
The cautiously rising general
optimism is slowly coinciding
again with the continuing optimism
of the own companies. This
remains a sign of the strength that
the region and the companies have
worked hard to achieve. A look at
the diversity and strength of
companies in the Basel re-gion on
the following pages gives cause for
optimism.
