Hard to believe that we are already at the final quarter of the year. It seemed to all go down pretty

quick without a chance to catch our breath. All of the sudden we’ve been getting slammed with new releases

as all the labels both major and independent are pushing for a strong finish closing out quite a musical year

indeed. Take a look closely at the charts in this issue from Top40, Hot AC to Country and you will be able to

look at the strongest of the pack from the major label artists to the artists in the independent arena. It is

most certainly quite remarkable to see.

Of all the active things, it was the resurgence of movies that added the biggest bounce at radio and in

the bright financials. Taylor Swift had a year for the record books running up to billionaire status. Not only did

her concert tour break records, the film of that concert also set records at the box office. That also helped

her to keep multiple songs on the charts highlighted by her #1 “Cruel Summer” that sat at the top spot for

a record number of weeks.

Barbie also hit the box office with some record setting weeks that also brought a boat load of music

along with it. A vast number of artists reaped the benefits of the soundtrack and as of this writing the

numbers just keep building by leaps and bounds. The soundtrack also brought back some older titles that

have now seen a resurgence in airplay, giving those artists with a catalog a chance to regain some new

music lovers attention. Barbie was a true exception to the norm with many of the industry experts admitting

that they didn’t see this one coming but were so glad that it happened.

As our Hitmakers abound into the final quarter some standouts in pop radio include the big smash

from Paul Russell called “Lil Boo Thang”. Everybody is just raving about this single and the numbers are

there to prove our point. Olivia Rodrigo has resurfaced with a number of new songs including the track

“get him back!” (Geffen/Interscope) that is also finding its way into television commercials. She is taking

advantage of the opportunities and it is starting to pay off in a very big way. Newcomer Kenya Grace is also

taking full advantage of the final quarter as her new and ever exciting single “Strangers” (Major/Warner)

takes flight. A lot riding on this one for sure.

With all that being said, it’s also time for Christmas music. So many releases this early that it’s hard

to keep track. One of the very first to check in was Barry Manilow who takes a swing at “All I Want For

Christmas Is You”. There have already been a number of independent artists coming to the plate with some

rather strong entries including a new one from Cabela & Schmitt called “Christmas Bells Are Ringing” (C&S

Music) that is already creating quite the buzz around here and many places at radio. You can find some of

them covered in this issue.

It’s also that time of year that we lean on our panel of radio stations and their programmers for an

early look at potential nominees for our annual New Music Awards. Fear not because an open ballot will

soon be revealed on the Nee Music Weekly website that will allow all to participate. We do however like to

take the temperature of our reporters to get some early feedback. The music fans also play a pivotal role

in both the nominations and the winners outcome. We hope to have the link to that first round up on our

sight at any time now. Please make sure to participate and allow your voice to be heard during this award

season.

Throughout this final quarter, New Music Weekly will continue to offer artists, bands and record labels

the “tools of the trade”. From our STS tracking to our weekly music charts in multi-formats, we continue to

Since being named runner-up on season 20 of ABC’s American Idol, HunterGirl’s authenticity, unwavering

tenacity and heart of gold have positioned her as Country’s next star, earning praise she’d only

dreamed of. More important, HunterGirl wins hearts. Skyrocketing to No. 1 on iTunes All-Genre and

Country charts with her earnest and deeply personal original track “Red Bird,” she’s performed on

Live with Kelly & Ryan, appeared on Good Morning America, and was named a 2023 Artist to Watch

by Music Mayhem. Signed to 19 Records/BBR/Wheelhouse Records, HunterGirl, who is working her

first-label project, just released her latest single “Ain’t About You,” written before she auditioned for

Idol. “I wrote that song two weeks before my American Idol audition and two weeks before my life

changed forever,” HunterGirl said. Obviously, I have a ton of breakup songs, but the ‘life songs’ for

me, I reach down pretty deep for that,” HunterGirl offered. “I call them my ‘heart songs’. ‘Ain’t About

You’ is a heart song. Those are the songs I think about when I’m reaching down real deep.” A few

weeks after being crowned runner-up, show offers were coming in to UTA faster than she could put a

band together. “That was a huge year of my life. I learned so much about myself as an artist and as a

person. I vividly remember the flight home from New York after doing the talk shows after the finale,

and I hadn’t been in Tennessee for four months. It was the moment where everything stopped for

a second and you think, ‘Wow, this has all just happened.’” Still dressed from doing morning media,

she was walking through Nashville’s airport when someone wished her a happy birthday. She had

forgotten it was the next day. “People coming up to me, cheering me on. People hugging me. Telling

me they were proud of me – people I had never met before,” she enthused. “And that’s when I

realized how much had changed.”People are drawn to her heart out, head up, boots on approach to

everything she does. She’s a gutsy songwriter who works with veterans’ organizations where she

uses music therapy to transform worrier’s stories into songs.

Ice Spice & Rema have come together

for a solid hit as we get set well into our

final quarter. Many music and programmers

are singing the praises of their solid and powerful “Pretty Girl” (10K Projects/

Capitol). It screams hit from start to finish and its no wonder so many stations

have come on board in record time. Also getting a big boost in this final quarter is

Olivia Rodrigo. She is taking it all in as her latest single “get him back!” (Geffen/

Interscope) moves past the pack. This track is getting a lot of play not only on

radio but in commercials as well giving her some rather stellar coverage.

Kenya Grace is turning heads and ears all over the USA for her current hit

single entitled “Strangers” (Major/Warner). There is something about this song

that is really helping to build a solid fan base and after one listen you will know

just what I’m talking about. The ever popular Jung Kook has teamed up with

the ever funky Jack Harlow for a single that many out there are loving. “3D”

(Geffen/Interscope) is the jam that I’m talking about and although it seemed

like a strange pairing there is something special about this single.

Paul Russell is taking the music world by storm and make no mistake

about it. The single “Lil Boo Thang” (Arista) is starting to appear on most of

the music playlists from our panel of music and program directors. Just about

all of them are all over this one in a very big way. I feel safe in saying that this

has potential #1 all over it. I just hope I don’t regret this prediction. I can tell you

for certain that Travis Scott is getting lots of attention at the format. The single

“I KNOW?” (Cactus Jack/Epic) is really one of his best to date and with a little

bit of luck we can expect to see it rising towards the top of our chart.

Usher is back and taking quite the crew with him as he joins Summer

Walker & 21 Savage for the single “Good Good” (Gamma/Epic). Usher has

just landed the gig of a lifetime headlining this year’s Super Bowl. There’s no

doubt that his team and the record label will be pulling out all the stops on this

one to make it happen. You can see that a lot of pressure is building towards

this huge event and only time will tell if he can get the approval of this massive

world-wide audience. We most certainly wish him the best.

J Balvin is also playing into the hype as he brings Usher & good pal and

producer DJ Khaled to the table. The single “Dientes” (UMLatino/UMLE) is

pulling in some rather amazing numbers and the music fans seem to be loving

this one big time. It seems to fit the flavor of what this format is all about these

days. I would put this one at the top of the stack and you can bet the phones

will light up your entire studio.

The pairing of the brilliant Diplo with Jessie Murph & Polo G is really

turning up the heat on everybody. “Heartbroken” (Columbia) is really quite a

great song and everybody that we have been talking to in the programming

department can all agree that this one needs just a little bit more love and

attention. Noah Kahan has been having quite the run at Top40 radio. The single

“Dial Drunk” (Mercury/Republic) is so hot that its hard not to love it. The

numbers on this one are quite stunning and this one is a real winner.

DK Davis is really on the roll with his current single “Don’t Cry Daddy”

(Route 66/AMG). The single is breaking from Pop to Country giving him one of

the best crossover track so far this year. John Jurney has been winning friends at

radio big time in every way. His single “Not Enough You” (Most Likely Music)

is just what good music is all about.

Doechii has a good thing going with “What It Is (Block Boy)” (TDE/

Capitol) while Newjeans keep the heat on with “Super Shy” (Interscope). NF

have proven their point with “Happy” (Real Music/Virgin) and Bakar turned

up the heat towards the end of this year with the surprise hit in “Hell N Back”

(Black Butter/Epic). This is our Hitmakers issue and take a close look at the

charts as we move ever so close to our “Best of 2023” which set the plate for

our annual and beloved New Music Awards.

There’s no doubt about the fact that

recording artist Tate Mcrae is here to stay.

His latest in a little song he calls “Greedy”

(RCA) is pulling in some major support coast to coast. By the looks of things

this early on, you can expect to see this to fly to the very top of the charts in

record time. You can take my word on that. Doja Cat keeps ringing in the hits

right into the holiday season and make no mistake about that. Her new “Agora

Hills” (Kemosabe/RCA) is getting rave reviews from radio programmers all

over the USA. It’s actually one of her best so far so we’ll see just how high

this one will go.

Morgan Wallen isn’t just happy to take Country music by storm, he wants

to go mainstream as well. “Thinkin’ Bout Me” (Big Loud/Mercury/Republic)

puts Morgan on the right track and really opens up a world of new opportunities

for him. You can recall not too long ago that his career was almost finished.

You wanna talk about a real turn around, well you have it right there under

the new and improved Morgan Wallen story.

Zara Larsson has teamed up with the genius that is David Guetta for a

real solid barn-burner. “On My Love” (Sommer House/Epic) is the jam that I

am referring to and this one is so red-hot that you can hardly touch it. From the

very first listen it has you and the production is out of this world. Nicki Minaj

is back on a roll and she wants the entire music world to know it. “Last Time I

Saw You” (Republic) is another solid track from her and the production team.

Also good to see such solid numbers rolling in her favor for this gem.

Teddy Swims is on the fast track to becoming a solid hitmaker. “Lose

Control” (Warner) is the latest from this master and the song is simply out of

this world. You can expect a very bright future ahead for Teddy as the song

appears to be well on it’s way to the top of the charts.

Billie Eilish is back and proving she is worth the wait in gold and

platinum. Her current single in “What Was I Made For?” (Darkroom/

Interscope) has proven to be a solid one from her as she regains her crown at

the top. She may be hot but can’t seem to get close to the power that is Taylor

Swift. With her monster concert movie breaking all kinds of records & her

“Cruel Summer” (Republic) still a solid Top5, this has truly been the summer

of Taylor Swift and maybe the year for her as well.

Charli XCX is still pulling in some rather impressive numbers for her

current hit single. “Speed Drive” (Atlantic) is so fast that it’s hard to really keep

up with her. I really think it is one of the best tracks out at pop radio these days

so make sure to give it a spin and keep all the kids happy. Jain is rocking the

music world with some rather strong firepower. The single “Makeba” (Sony

France/Spookland) has it all and a bag of chips. Keep this one at the top of

your stack and you will be so glad that you did.

I’m thrilled to see that Jelly Roll keeps rocking the AC40 charts. “Need

A Favor” (Stoney Creek) which has already topped the country charts, is

just so catchy that you can’t help but love it. To think that this is a guy who

was in prison not that long ago, it’s really hard to not love his story. Many at

radio from pop to country have embraced him in a very big way and as for

his redemption, well it’s manifested in his new-found success.\

Jacaranda’s new “Freedom, God And Family” (Freezeland Music)

is on the move. JusJae is back with a real solid hit in “Need You” (Street

Corner/Crank Music). Cabela & Schmitt have a new Christmas song set for

release and their debut “This Is My Life” (C&S Music) has really turned into

something quite special. John Jurney rocks the free world with “Not Enough

You” (Most Likely Music) and Eileen Carey is at her very best with her chart

topping “Land With You” (RolleyCstr Music).

GRANDADDY Announces New Album

Today, legendary indie-rock band Grandaddy has

announced a brand new studio album Blu Wav set for

release February 16, 2024 via Dangerbird Records.

A prolific storyteller, Jason Lytle is inspired by the

overwhelming beauty of nature to the mundane moments

that spark life’s strongest memories. Introducing pedal

steel into the band’s repertoire for the first time, buoyant

lead single “Watercooler” comments on the dichotomy of

both. It was inspired by having his own outdoorsy rock

guy (in both senses of the word) lifestyle while his partner

had an office job. Lytle shares, “Most of my relationships

have involved girls who worked in office settings. This

song is about the end of one, or perhaps a few, of those

relationships. Listeners will also notice the pedal steel

on this track and eventually on many others from the

forthcoming new album. It’s a first for Grandaddy, and I

couldn’t be more thrilled about this fact.” With the album

title Blu Wav meant to be a literal mash-up of “bluegrass”

and “new wave”, the new collection has a distinct feel,

a uniform vibe, and a somewhat unexpected sound. It

was conceived as Grandaddy maestro Jason Lytle was

driving through the Nevada desert, and Patti Page’s

“Tennessee Waltz” came across the classic country

station on the radio. He was immediately intrigued by

the possibilities of what it might sound like to keep the

slow sway and sweet, simple lyrics of the bluegrass

waltz while adding layers of dense synthesizers and

the electronics of new wave. It incorporates the lofi

lushness and sometimes-psychedelic orchestration

Grandaddy is known for with Lytle’s first foray into true

country. Seven of its 13 songs are waltzes, and as Lytle

notes, “there’s an inordinate amount of pedal steel.”

Caroline Jones Third Album Homesite

Today, Country artist Caroline Jones is adding to

her diverse repertoire of thoughtfully curated and crafted,

self-penned projects with the release of her third studio

album, Homesite. Co-produced by Jones, the 11-track

album spotlights the singer-songwriter’s incomparable

vocals and musicianship, as well as features from

a respected group of artists that she’s worked with

throughout her career, including GRAMMY Awardwinning

Zac Brown Band, Vince Gill, Alyssa Bonagura,

and more. “Homesite” is my best work yet. Musically,

it’s the most raw and energetic production I’ve put

out, and lyrically, it’s the most honest and narrative. I

wanted to be nervous in the studio again, so we brought

in a new crop of talented musicians and collaborators,

journey began one year ago. The studio was booked for early 2023, and as Jimmy Buffett’s

longtime collaborator of 50 years, Michael Utley recalls, “There were no songs; just ideas

in Jimmy’s head. The first song he sent us was actually ‘Fish Porn’” — which raised a few

eyebrows! Jimmy and his longtime friend and fishing buddy, novelist Carl Hiaasen came

up with this clever story that’s guaranteed to bring a smile. Co-producers Utley and Mac

McAnally were not worried and knew the songs would come. The album came together

quickly and was recorded in Key West, Nashville, New Orleans and Los Angeles. The 14-

track record (with 11 originals and 3 covers) is classic Jimmy Buffett. He also invited a feast

of well-known friends, including Paul McCartney, Emmylou Harris, Angelique Kidjo, and

the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The album also features contributions from his frequent

co-writer and honorary Coral Reefer Will Kimbrough and PEI artist Lennie Gallant.

Multi-platinum classical crossover group, IL DIVO, drops their

surprise EP today titled “A Merry Little Christmas,” just in time

Jon Pardi & Luke Bryan are taking it

to church with a solid pairing that is getting

raves across the board. “Cowboys And

Plowboys” (Capitol Nashville) is the single that is really pulling in some rather

strong numbers. Luke Combs is getting a solid list of early believers for his

new entry. “Where The Wild Things Are” (River House/Columbia Nashville)

is really quite something and from the looks of things this early this may move

towards the top of the charts in record time. Stay tuned on this one for sure.

HunterGirl who made her claim to fame on American Idol. “Ain’t About You”

(Wheelhouse) is quite the grand entry for this red hot newcomer and the fact

that it was the #1 “most added” at Country radio tells you that something

rather special is going on here. Recording artist Ian Munsick is pulling in some

rather strong numbers as well for a new single entitled “Long Live Cowgirls”

(Warner/WEA). This could not come at a better time as we get set to close out

the final quarter of the year and what a great song this is.

Thomas Rhett has teamed up with the ever popular Morgan Wallen for

a real solid radio song. “Mamaw’s House” (Valory/Big Loud) from this new

dynamic duo is really quite a solid single and our music and program directors

are all over this one big time. Also making a bit of Country history is Jordan

Davis. His new “Tucson Too Late” (MCA Nashville) is the talk of the town.

The song has solid legs and from the very first listen it grabs you right away.

Expect some big things ahead for this solid masterpiece.

Anne Wilson may have some “heart” on her mind but she also just may

have a hit at Country radio. Anne has made the Country format her latest

challenge and it may have just paid off big time. “Rain In The Rearview”

(Sparrow/EMI Nashville) is pulling in some rather impressive numbers each

and every week so it appears that all of her hard work is finally paying off in

this most competitive format. Congratulations to Anne.

The pairing of Zach Bryan & Kacey Musgraves has really turned into

something that is quite brilliant. The single “I Remember...” (Warner/WAR)

started out a little slow but it appears to be winning the hearts and minds of

Country music fans from coast to coast. It’s actually one of the best songs

out there today. Also breaking new and improved ground every day is Hailey

Whitthers. Her latest in “I’m In Love” (Big Loud) is so hot that you can barely

touch it. I’m not sure where they got her but what a find she is indeed.

Megan Moroney continues to win over the hearts and minds of music

listeners everywhere. “I’m Not Pretty” (Columbia Nashville) is the track that

has really shown her growth and music potential at every turn. If you are a

radio programmer that is not already on this gem, what are you waiting for?

Morgan Wallen keeps rocking and rolling out the hits. Many are singing the

praises of his latest in “Thinkin’ Bout Me” (Big Loud/Mercury/Republic).

Question - is he just thinking about himself here?

Nate Smith has a good thing going as his “World On Fire” (RCA

Nashville) moves past the pack. Also getting some major action is Robert

Eskridge and his “When Life Happens” (Bucket List) single. Tommy Charles

is on the move with his latest in “Second Chance” (Crank Music). Rob Georg

is moving past the pact with his “Won For Y’All” (Coast) and the fabulous

Cabela & Schmitt have a good thing going with “This Is My Life” (C&S

Music) and a new Christmas song is on the way.

Eileen Carey is at her very best with “Land With You” (RolleyCstr

Music). Bill Abernathy keeps rolling past the rest with his stellar “Hide Away”

(MTS). Jeremy Parsons has a big time hit on his hands with “Life Worth Dyin’

Carrie Underwood is no stranger to the word “reality.” After all, as the winner of the 2005 season of

“American Idol,” she won the hearts of millions of viewers across the world. Now, the singer has entered into

a promotion that is sure to please her fan following.

Sony Music Nashville and Aurasma, the world’s leading augmented reality platform, have partnered

to launch an augmented reality promotional campaign for Underwood’s No. 1 album, “Blown Away,” which

was released in May.

Using the free Aurasma Lite app for iPhones, iPads and Android devices available from the iTunes App

Store and Google Play, fans can launch exclusive video of Underwood that is triggered by aiming the device

at the cover image of Blown Away. The video leaps from the Blown Away image on the mobile device or

tablet and provides a click-through gateway to the album at the iTunes store. The promotion was launched

in Nashville recently at the CMA Music Festival.

“Carrie Underwood is always looking for ways to connect with her fans,” said Gary Overton, Sony

Music Nashville chairman and chief executive officer. “We are excited to embrace a cutting-edge technology like augmented reality to help give fans

something special and provide a cool, unique connection between the artist and audience. Sony Music Nashville is excited to watch this fun idea unfold

Upon its release on May 1, “Blown Away” made history by debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country albums sales chart making Underwood

only the second country artist in the 47 year history of the chart to have each of their first four albums debut at No. 1. “Blown Away” also debuted at

No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart making Underwood only the second country artist in history to have three consecutive albums debut at No.

1. “Blown Away” became country’s best-selling digital album debut since 2010.

Yesterday, Underwood performed the first of four concerts on the Australian leg of her tour to promote “Blown Away.” She kicked things off in

Melbourne, and will perform in Tamworth and Brisbane on Friday and Saturday, before finishing things in Sydney on Sunday. Also, Underwood has just

released the title cut as the second single -- to follow up the chart-topping success of “Good Girl,” which became her fifteenth number one record.

teacher. Sheryl Crow - long before she hit it big in 1993 with

“All I Wanna Do,” was actually a music teacher at Kellison

Elementary School. Though her teaching days in school are

long over, Crow - who turns an amazing 50 years old today -

Are you up on These Hearts? Ryan Saunders, vocals, Kyle

Colby, guitar/vocals Isaiah Folk, drums, Daryl Van Beek, guitar

and Tyler Rice, bass make up this super red hot band. The recent

release of the lyric video for “Miserable” has ignited their fans

anticipation for their forthcoming sophomore album “Yours To

Take” available this month. The new album can be heard live

on the band’s headlining album release tour beginning in Joliet,

IL. The band’s sound is a combination of honest, refreshing,

spirited pitch-perfect harmonies with dynamic and emotive

The New York based indie rock band Born Cages is set to

release their Sidelines EP via Razor & Tie. The band will hit the

road this summer as well. Born Cages new EP was produced

by Jon Kaplan (Walk The Moon, Augustana) and Oliver Straus

(Arctic Monkeys, Matt & Kim) at Mission Sound in Brooklyn,

NY. The band is finishing up their debut full length album to be

released later this year. The New York City based Born Cages

formed in 2011. Within one year the young band had already

released an EP, opened two sold-out shows for Guns N’ Roses and

shared stages with such bands as Gold Fields, Mother Mother, and

Ludo. The band has had music played on Q104.3 in New York

and recently recorded a session at the Gibson NYC showroom

that premiered on Purevolume. They were also featured on a large

billboard in Times Square as part of a Toshiba promotion. Born

Cages is Vlad Holiday (lead vocals/lead guitar), Amanda Carl

(keyboards/backing vocals), Steve Kellner (bass guitar/backing

vocals) and Dave Tantao (drums).

John Tejada has a new exclusive mix for Halocyan Records

entitled “Somewhere” via Pitchfork. Have you been following

Halocyan Records? This is a global dance brand and record label

launched by Dimitri Fergadis, an acclaimed musician and founder

of the LA-based experimental electronica label Phthalo Records.

Halocyan is dedicated to representing not just the present and

future of electronic music, but also its rich history. Halocyan

believes that a strong sense of historical roots is an essential

launching pad for bold voyages into the unknown.

New York City-based retro songstress Joanne Weaver sets

out to the Dominican Republic this month to shoot her new music

video for “Nature Boy”, the latest single off her debut album

Interstellar Songbook which she released in June of last year. The

concept album is a collection of Joanne’s unique, psychedelic

renditions of eight classic standards from the 40s, 50s and early

60s and is available on iTunes and CD Baby.
