Romanians from Serbia in Denmark

[2] So-called ‘Councils of Integration’ were established in a number of municipalities with the
backing of the state in order to counsel the municipalities in matters concerning ethnic
minorities andintegration.
[3] In the text, the Serbian-Vlach community in Denmark will be called Vlach when itrelates to the
specific minority group, and Serb/Serbian when it relates to traits which are common to all
Serbsor to Serbian immigrants in Denmark.
[4] While their parents were industrial workers and bus-drivers, the younger generationprefers jobs
within information technology, administration or organisation and management. Some have
concentrated on vocational training and are now skilled workers (bricklayers or carpenters),
while the girls prefer jobs as nurses, nursing auxiliaries, home helps or secretaries (Serbian
male, 2008).
[5] Graduate students participating in Geography field courses in 2006 and 2008 contributedwith
inspiring observations and opened my eyes to many issues that were later discussed with other
respondents.
[6] Mainly those who have not worked sufficient years in Denmark toobtain a full Danish state
pension.
[7] Many of the Vlach women who were interviewed had worked in a large factory producing
medical equipment, in dry-cleaning or as fruit-packers.
[8] The frequent mugging of Yugoslav guestworkers by motorcycle gangs reported ininterviews
with former gang members are revealing for the degree of xenophobia to be found in certain
layers of the Danish working class in that period (see Krüger 1976). However, such racist
clashes are actively downplayedby the Vlach community.

[10] According to Smith (2004: 129), 81 per cent of marriages among people fromex-Yugoslavia
are with a partner with roots in the same homeland.
[11] This was confirmed in an interview with the head of the Danish congregation.
[12] In the eyes of my interviewees, Milosevic’s refusal to sign the Rambouillet Accord in1999 was
indicative of his lack of willingness to end the war.
[13] Their sympathies for the Serbian cause can be seen on the internet blog of one of theFriendship
Associations, where a letter of sympathy from one of the leaders of the Danish People’s Party is
posted.
