Happy Fall Ya’ll
There was beautiful fall weather to be enjoyed over the weekend at Nauti Spirits Distillery. Visitors
including Hugh, Megan, Ginny and Joe had a day of fun staying warm by the firepits, exploring the corn
maze and, naturally, sipping craft cocktails. More photos from Nauti Spirits inside. Aleksey Moryakov

BEACH & PERRY, CAPE MAY
Page 12 EXIT ZERO November 9, 2023
Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: This week we’re highlighting where we’re drinking and
we spent a few hours at Nauti Spirits Distillery last week. Their tasting
room is at the end of their long gravel driveway off Shunpike Road. We
were lucky, and you may be too depending on the time of year, to see
the large field of sunflowers on your left — perfect spot to snap photos.
The vibe: It was a Wednesday, so it wasn’t too busy, but the weather
was beautiful, and Courtney, Kayla and Nicole grabbed a few chairs
around a firepit. There were a couple of picnic tables filled with teachers
having an afternoon out with pumpkin painting and team bonding.
They purchased their pumpkins from the large bin that Nauti offers
with a variety of sizes, another great spot to grab your gourds for the
season. There were a couple of other firepits lit through the outdoor
area, so as it got later, and chillier, we opted to light ours to keep warm
for the remainder of the night. We brought some snacks to much on —
Nauti doesn’t serve food so make sure to bring your own. Matt’s Family
Food Truck is, however, there on weekends serving some delicious BBQ
and some other tasty bites (Fri 4-8pm, Sat 1-8pm and Sun 1-6pm).
The drinks: Nicole started with a Delaware Bay Breeze, her usual
anytime she visit Nauti, with pineapple, cranberry, lime and Nauti
vodka. Courtney and Kayla went for something spicy with the Sizzle
Berry — Nauti’s jalapeno vodka with strawberry puree, ginger, lemon
and club soda with a Tajin rim. Everyone went back for a second round
but switched it up. We couldn’t pass up on the seasonal NO. 8 Cider —
plundered #8 whiskey, spiced apple cider, orange and lemon. This was
the afternoon’s highlight for sure, and we wished this wasn’t just a seasonal
cocktail. I guess we’ll just have to make time to visit again before
it’s gone, and you should, too!
The takeaway: Nauti Spirits is open from 12pm Thursday-Sunday
and from 2pm Monday-Wednesday. They have some fun events coming
up including their Holiday Sip & Shop on November 25. Keep an eye
on their socials to learn more about who’s participating!

LUCKY BONES
www.luckybonesgrill.com
This local legend of an eatery serves up their signature
breakfast items, mouth-watering lunches and
generous dinners all in a welcoming and relaxed
environment.
Chef Carl Messick has taken over what was once
Godmother’s and transformed it into a relaxed, finedining
restaurant. Exquisite dishes featuring seasonal
and sustainable ingredients.
A locals’ favorite for a reason. There’s a Key West vibe,
good food, regular entertainment, and the views are
spectacular.
A little slice of paradise on the bay, enjoy dishes
with Caribbean flair, listen to a few jam bands and
watch spectacular sunsets while sipping a cocktail or
domestic draft.
This year brings new ownership to the beachfront
restaurant and bar. Rooftop dining, live music, fresh
local seafood and signature orange crushes — the
fun awaits!
Just steps from the Washington Street Mall, Iccara
Italian Bistro & Seafood brings you the fresh flavors of
Italy in a charming, welcoming atmosphere.
A Jersey Shore classic serving brunch and dinner.
Visit their full bar mixing up specialty Jersey-themed
cocktails, craft beer, and much more. Enjoy indoor
and outdoor dining with an expanded patio.
Offering fresh seafood and a variety of burgers,
sandwiches, salads and apps. Make sure to grab a
stool upstairs overlooking Surfside Pier and enjoy
local craft beer and signature cocktails.
Take-out, fish market, restaurant, raw bar, breakfast,
dinner... The Lobster House has it all. Drinks on the
Schooner American before dinner is a must-do Cape
May experience.
The menu features all regional fare including fish,
vegetables, fruits and herbs from Beach Plum Farm
and other New Jersey farms. They also offer some fun
sweets next door at the Chocolate Shop.
A huge hit and locals’ favorite for a reason. Excellent
food (the thin-crust pizzas are excellent), great bar
vibe and service. Lucky Bones gets it right every time.
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
The Northern Hemisphere is slipping
inexorably into winter. Birds
are nature’s heralds, and bringing a
bird watcher is to be a witness and
participant. Being familiar with the
seasonal slide into winter, wife Linda and I
take the pulse of that slide by what we see and
don’t see. She took the hummingbird feeder
down because she hadn’t seen one in a week.
Neither have I, but western strays are possible
through November.
But Linda and I are most interested in
the normal order of things, not the odd-ball
occurrence. To us nature is affirming and confirming.
Something to turn to and count on
when the rest of the world is going all to hell.
Republicans in Congress can’t govern?
Middle East erupts in horror, the natural
world can be counted upon to be business as
usual, an affirming picture of calm in a gallery
of chaos. On the river Ring-billed Gulls now
outnumber Laughing gulls. It’s the changing
of the guard as summer gulls leave and winter
gulls arrive.
Yesterday morning a dozen Black Ducks
were heading upriver to feed just as one thousand
Fish Crows were heading south out of
their roost. This is our typical winter pattern
and it is unfolding punctually. Any day now,
White-throated Sparrows will flood our yard.
This, too, is predictable and affirming.
Birders are never out of step with the universe.
No matter how crazy the world gets, all
I need to do is take a walk, drink in the sights
and sounds of the season and I am anchored.
On 9-11 I was leading a birding workshop
in Cape May. The morning after the
towers fell, I met my group at Cape May Point
State Park. Ten Americans away from home
in shock over the attack upon our values and
our soil. Donning the mantle of leader, I said:
“I know we’re all hurting this morning,
but whenever my life takes a hit, I turn to the
natural world for solace. I suggest we do it,
let nature do her job.” So we started down the
trails. It didn’t solve the world’s troubles, but
it soothed us.
No matter how confused the human
world gets, nature can be counted upon to
offer an antidote to human travail.
The government shuts down? The leaves
fall anyway. Nature doesn’t go on strike —
hawks will continue to migrate past the hawk
watch all through November just as they do
every fall. It is comforting and affirming.
So, yes, the hummingbirds have gone.
Bad news? No, just the opposite. The universe
is right on schedule.
The Movie Column
By guest columnist Will Rodebaugh, III
The tossed salads and scrambled eggs
are “calling again” after 19 years. The
iconic show Frasier is back with star
Kelsey Grammer as Frasier Crane,
a celebrity psychotherapist who
gives people wisdom but does not always
have answers for himself. For 11 seasons
(1993-2004) the original, a spinoff from the
long-running sitcom Cheers, offered memorable
TV moments. One favorite is when
Frasier’s brother, Niles (David Hyde Pierce),
comes to a Halloween party dressed as their
father, Martin (John Mahoney). At the party,
laughs ultimately go fascinatingly serious for
a moment before springing back to humor.
Who can forget when Frasier tried to create
a theme song for his radio show, and it
ended up being a two-minute opera complete
with a full orchestra? Or the time when Frasier
is determined to win chess against his father
Martin, a more rough-and-tumble character.
In Frasier 2023, Frasier is the only character
from the original series to appear. Other
stars from the original will return in an episode
or two, but for now the rest the cast
is all new — or is it. Frasier’s son, Freddy
(Jack Cutmore-Scott), factors in more in the
new show. He essentially takes the blue-collar
place of the Martin character, having dropped
out of Harvard and begun work as a firefighter.
Niles and wife Daphne (Jane Leeves)
are not in the show; however, their son, David
(Anders Keith), joins Uncle Frasier as the two
return to Boston. David has a striking resem-
blance to Niles, so it’s like those characters
never left.
In the new series, Frasier returns to
Boston after a celebrity career on television
(we catch glimpses of this only in flashbacks,
which are hilarious). His goal is to give a guest
lecture in the class of his close friend from
Harvard Alan Cornwall (Nicholas Lyndhurst).
While in town, he checks on Freddy. Sure, the
reunion is tenuous, but Frasier tries his best
to help his son work through some issues he’s
having — whether Freddy wants it or not.
This reboot perfectly reminds us that
when we feel overwhelmed by the challenges
of the world there should always be someone
we can lean on. When some of those people
aren’t there anymore, others can easily
take their place. Martin living on through his
grandson, Freddy, or Niles through his son
David are completely organic… sometimes,
family members have uncanny resemblances!
This reboot so far has painted a beautiful story
of characters reuniting and working out their
differences — like family.
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, treat yourself to a manicure!
Follow an ancient tradition — treat
yourself to some fancy fingernails.
As early as 5000 BCE, women
in India dipped their nails in henna.
Male warriors around 3200 BCE
included colored nails as part of their war
paint. By 3000 BCE, Chinese women used
crushed orchid and rose petals mixed with
beeswax and egg whites to color their nails,
but the time-consuming process was mainly
reserved for royalty. For much of history,
bleach was used to whiten nails, creating the
illusion of high-status idleness. Around the
15th century, the Incas decorated their nails
with eagles to show their strength. By the
19th century, French manicurists used tinted
creams to shine nails, and American Mary
Cobb Pray brought the French techniques to
Manhattan in 1878.
“Mrs. Pray’s Manicures” treated women
to the ‘soak, cut, shape, polish’ system that
remains the procedure for a simple manicure.
She charged $1.25, almost $40 in today’s
dollars. Her company also created the emery
board and, by 1900, sold a simple form of
home polish — a tinted cream that you rubbed
into your nails and buffed to a shine. In 1916,
Cutex introduced clear nail lacquer, and in
the 1920s, colored lacquer was mass produced,
thanks in part to advancements in
the auto industry and the development of
nitrocellulose. In 1928 Cutex made nail lacquer
remover safe for home use, thus making
it practical for people to do their own nails.
In 1932, Revlon introduced nail polish, and
colored nails became an affordable luxury.
In the 1970s, the number of nail salons in the
United States exploded. In the 1980s and 90s,
artists like Janet Jackson and Coko sparked
trends in complex nail art and Uma Thurman’s
blood red “Pulp Fiction” nails caused a sellout
of Chanel’s “Rouge Noir.” Nail art had entered
the mainstream.
Current nail trends are diverse, from
“Barbie” pink to “Wednesday Addams” black.
There are velvet nails, bubble nails, galaxy
swirls, and latte nails. Gel and dip nails last
longer than traditional polish, though removal
is complex. “Clean” nail polishes promise
style without toxic chemicals. Doing your
nails at home has never been easier and even
press-on nails have improved to the point of
respectability.
Enjoy a manicure at a traditional salon
like Eternity (609-435-5775) or Halo (609-
884-0504). Or, add a nail treatment to your
beauty routine at Accent on Beauty (609-
884-7040) or Evolution (609-889-6900).
The Answer Lady invites inquiries from
gentle readers on all manner of relationship
quandaries, matters of the
heart and ethics. If you’d like to send
a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or,
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
My husband and I separated over the
summer. It has been very amicable, and I
expected to be invited to his parents’ house
for Thanksgiving, but “Pete” said it wouldn’t
be appropriate. I don’t see why. I was very
close to his family long before we married.
We lived next door to each other growing up.
“Pete” says separating was my idea and I can’t
“have it both ways.” I want to reach out to his
parents and ask them, but my mother agrees
with “Pete.” My family have all moved away
and I feel I have nowhere to go. What do you
think? — Dissed
Dear Dissed
What is wrong with you? Of course, you
are not welcomed, especially at Thanksgiving.
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
The fact that you would even consider calling
HIS family and inviting yourself says more
about you than it does “Pete.” Get a grip. Call
the Washington Inn and order yourself a
Thanksgiving dinner to-go. Invite some close
friends who are in a similar situation or looking
for an excuse to NOT spend Thanksgiving
with family and start your new life on the right
foot. Or consider a reconciliation with “Pete.”
And not just for the holidays.
Dear Answer Lady
A man I dated 20 years ago was “stalking”
me on Facebook to reconnect. He lives in
Pennsylvania. I live in Cape May. I figured,
what the heck, I have no one else in my life right
now. He booked a room at La Mer. We had a
romantic dinner at The Pier House and spent
a very nice night together. Next day we played
a round of golf at Cape May National and he
went on his way with the promise of getting
together again before the month’s end. Then,
crickets. I did discover during his visit that he
is married. Should I call? — Alone Again
Dear Alone
Oh honey. His wife found out. Or plagued
by a guilty conscience, he confessed. Or got
scared about what a divorce would cost him.
At any rate — good riddance. Why would you
call? There is no future in this, and the sex is
meh. Do yourself a solid and book and exorcise
this jerk with an appointment at Cape May
Day Spa. Get the Fall Refresher. Skip the
Fall Rendezvous for Two. Then write a list of
priorities you are looking for in a relationship.
ARIES is a large boy who was came to the
shelter when his owners could no longer keep
him. Once he is comfortable, he loves socializing
and attention. Tennis balls are Aries’
favorite toys and loves to play fetch. His leash
skills are improving and he already responds
well to “sit.” Aries would be best in an adult
home as the only pet in the house.
SPIKE is a 69-pound boy who came to the
shelter when his owner could no longer care
for him. He may look serious, but he lights up
when he sees people. Spike loves to snuggle
and is learning proper behavior cues with his
leash skills improving daily. He should be the
only pet in the house due to his size and live
with a family who has older children.
COOPER is a sweet and lovable boy who lived
with a family for two years, but they can no
longer take care of him. He is a 115-pound boy,
and his leash skills are improving daily, but
he loves to explore his surroundings. Cooper
would be better suited for a family with older
children as he tends to be protective of his
family.
senior citizen was feeding. He and his siblings,
Aston and Porsha, were brought to the shelter
to be domesticated. They are a very social
bunch looking for a new home to take them in.
Royce is great with other cats and is an indoor
cat. If interested in meeting this young boy,
PORSHA and her brothers came to the shelter
when the senior citizen feeding them brought
them in to be domesticated. The group are
in need of a loving home in which they can
play and be cared for. Porsha is an indoor cat
