SATISFACTION MATTERS<br />

With thousands of different franchises available today, it’s hard to know which are potentially<br />

good investments, and which should be avoided. There are many factors to consider when<br />

investing in a franchise, but one of the most important is the satisfaction of current<br />

franchise owners.<br />

Each year, we survey thousands of franchise owners to find the companies that are truly<br />

the best of the best. We ask the questions everyone wants to know:<br />

• Do you enjoy operating the business?<br />

• Are you getting the training and support you need?<br />

• Are you making the money you expected?<br />

• And most important... Would you recommend this franchise to others?<br />

HOW WE SELECT THE TOP FRANCHISES<br />

STEP 1: Invite<br />

We invite all franchise companies based in North America<br />

with 10 or more franchise owners to participate in our<br />

research at no cost.<br />

STEP 2: Survey<br />

We contact all franchisees in the franchise companies<br />

that choose to participate and invite them to answer a<br />

33-question satisfaction survey covering eight key areas,<br />

including: financial opportunity, training & support,<br />

leadership, and core values.<br />

STEP 4: Score<br />

The FSI score is used to benchmark each company’s<br />

franchisee satisfaction level against over 1,100<br />

franchise brands representing tens of thousands<br />

of franchisees and determine their ranking<br />

among other participating companies.<br />

STEP 5: Award<br />

We identify the brands that exceed<br />

the benchmark and recognize them<br />

with a Top <strong>Franchise</strong> award.<br />

STEP 3: Analyze<br />

We analyze the responses from the franchisees and<br />

use a weighted scale to determine an overall <strong>Franchise</strong>e<br />

Satisfaction Index (FSI) score that ranges from 0-100. Other<br />

factors considered in the weighting are the percentage of<br />

franchisees that participate in the survey, the age of the<br />

survey and the size of the franchise system.<br />

the 13th consecutive year! We surveyed 2,909<br />

veteran franchise owners representing 385<br />

leading franchise brands to determine the 60<br />

best brands for veterans in <strong>2023</strong>. The brands<br />

on this year’s awards list have franchisee satisfaction<br />

ratings above the industry benchmark<br />

and provide veterans the tools, training,<br />

support, and systems needed to be successful<br />

franchise owners.<br />

We also celebrate this year’s Most Profitable<br />

<strong>Franchise</strong>s based on feedback from 38,000<br />

franchise owners. <strong>Franchise</strong>es were asked 33<br />

benchmark questions about their experience<br />

and satisfaction regarding critical areas of<br />

their franchise systems, including profitability,<br />

financial opportunity, leadership, training,<br />

operational support, and franchise culture.<br />

ARE NATURALS AT RUNNING<br />

A TIGHT SHIP<br />

Celebrating this year’s Top <strong>Franchise</strong>s for Veterans<br />

Hundreds of franchise companies<br />

offer military veterans incentives to<br />

sign on with them. The specialized<br />

training veterans undergo helps them<br />

develop a strong sense of responsibility for<br />

executing tasks, managing resources, and<br />

leading teams. Their training fosters strong<br />

leadership qualities that help them function<br />

within a highly structured, team-oriented<br />

environment. Former military personnel<br />

often possess a work ethic that is highly valued<br />

due to their service, training, and lifestyle.<br />

Veterans have a strong sense of accountability<br />

for their actions. They are accustomed to<br />

assuming responsibility for assigned tasks and<br />

executing them with self-reliance, requiring<br />

minimal supervision. For franchisors seeking<br />

seasoned professionals with a robust work<br />

ethic, it is wise to consider candidates with<br />

military experience.<br />

With so many franchises competing for<br />

the attention of potential veteran franchise<br />

owners, knowing which brands are the best<br />

franchises for veterans can be difficult. One<br />

of the best ways for veterans to determine if<br />

a franchise opportunity is really as good as it<br />

appears to be is to ask veteran franchise owners.<br />

<strong>Franchise</strong> Business Review (<strong>FBR</strong>) takes<br />

the guesswork out of this process by providing<br />

in-depth ratings and reviews based on survey<br />

results from veteran franchise owners. <strong>FBR</strong>’s<br />

franchisee satisfaction data is a great place for<br />

potential franchise buyers to conduct their<br />

research. Independent franchisee satisfaction<br />

ratings measure the health of franchise<br />

systems based exclusively on the feedback of<br />

actual franchise owners.<br />

According to VetFran, military veterans<br />

account for only 7% of the population, but<br />

14% of franchise owners are vets. Veteran<br />

Jorge Figueroa, Military Veteran and Fibrenew <strong>Franchise</strong> Owner, Osceola, Florida<br />

franchisees are more likely to hire veterans<br />

as employees, and 65% of franchisors have<br />

indicated that their rate of hiring veterans has<br />

increased in recent years.<br />

To determine this year’s Top <strong>Franchise</strong>s<br />

for Veterans awards list, <strong>Franchise</strong> Business<br />

Review analyzed 18 months of survey data<br />

from 2,909 veteran franchise owners representing<br />

385 franchise brands.<br />

“Many franchises entice veterans to invest<br />

through special incentives and discounts, but<br />

what really matters is what happens after they<br />

buy a franchise. The franchises featured in our<br />

Top <strong>Franchise</strong>s for Veterans list have earned<br />

the seal of approval from the veterans who<br />

own them,” said Eric Stites, founder and CEO<br />

of <strong>Franchise</strong> Business Review.<br />

<strong>Franchise</strong> Business Review’s research<br />

regarding franchisees with military experience<br />

shows veterans are drawn to a number<br />

of franchise models and investment levels.<br />

The 60 brands on <strong>FBR</strong>’s veterans list have<br />

<strong>Franchise</strong>e Satisfaction ratings of 10-30%<br />

higher on average than other franchises. The<br />

most popular franchise segments for veterans<br />

are Home Services (14% vets), Services (11%<br />

vets), Automotive (10% vets), Retail (10%),<br />

Senior Care (10%), and Food (8%). ■<br />

When Cal Pascanu realized he needed<br />

a career change, he thought business<br />

ownership could provide the independence<br />

and work-life balance he craved. As he began<br />

exploring franchise opportunities, one brand<br />

in particular checked all of the boxes for him.<br />

Why did you purchase a franchise instead<br />

of being an employee or opening an<br />

independent business?<br />

I had enough of seeing others cashing in<br />

on my hard work. I knew it was time to<br />

start building my own legacy. Additionally,<br />

I wanted more family time and the ability<br />

to attend my kids’ weekend games and<br />

activities. I needed to find work-life balance.<br />

Did you have your mind set on a specific<br />

industry or brand from the start?<br />

I had a vague idea I wanted to be in the<br />

automotive industry as it is an essential<br />

need for everyday life and something that<br />

can flourish in a good or bad economy<br />

(and not be influenced by internet giants<br />

like Amazon).<br />

Of your prior skills and experiences,<br />

which were most helpful in launching<br />

and operating your new business?<br />

My energy and personality gave me the edge<br />

in providing outstanding guest experiences.<br />

No matter what we do in life, we are in the<br />

customer service business. In our case, that<br />

service is fixing cars.<br />

When researching franchises to buy,<br />

what criteria or data points mattered<br />

to you most?<br />

My priorities were integrity, profitability,<br />

and growth opportunity.<br />

your research?<br />

Yes! During my research, I used the <strong>FBR</strong><br />

What were your biggest challenges when<br />

you first started out, and how did you<br />

overcome them?<br />

Building the team was my biggest challenge,<br />

and it continues to be my main focus.<br />

It’s important that I create and maintain<br />

a healthy culture with people who love<br />

winning and serving others.<br />

How does your franchise support and<br />

encourage your success?<br />

The support is second to none! It seriously<br />

felt like a mother or father holding my hand<br />

and walking me through our start-up process.<br />

And as I grew, they slowly let go but were<br />

always there for me—and still are—whenever<br />

I have a question or concern.<br />

What are you most proud of and why?<br />

I’ve always had a winning mentality. Reaching<br />

the top is definitely very satisfying to me!<br />

I strive to be in the top 10% in anything I do<br />

in life. Additionally, I get satisfaction from<br />

being able to help guests in need, especially<br />

single mothers. I enjoy growing team<br />

members around me and seeing them take<br />

the next steps in life and their careers.<br />

I love helping them work toward opening<br />

their own Christian Brothers Automotive<br />

shop. That, to me, is priceless. I want to help<br />

one person per year achieve this major<br />

milestone of opening their own store!<br />

What advice would you give to new or<br />

potential franchise buyers?<br />

Be committed. Jump in with both feet in as<br />

you enter this journey and trust the process<br />

Why did you purchase a franchise instead<br />

of being an employee or opening an<br />

independent business?<br />

I worked at investment firms in mergers and<br />

acquisitions (M&A) throughout my career.<br />

I became heavily involved in the operational<br />

aspects of family-owned businesses and<br />

absolutely fell in love with what I saw. Given<br />

my experience, I started the journey of<br />

purchasing an existing business for myself<br />

in the Fall of 2019. When I came across Right<br />

at Home, I was immediately drawn to the<br />

business and market-specific fundamentals,<br />

especially the joy of caring for some of the<br />

most vulnerable in our society.<br />

Did you have your mind set on a specific<br />

industry or franchise brand from the start?<br />

I met with several different businesses in<br />

multiple service industries. Some were<br />

franchises, some were not. I looked at<br />

businesses in industries like commercial<br />

locksmithing, landscaping, pest control,<br />

plumbing, commercial parking lot sweeping,<br />

you name it!<br />

Of your prior skills and experiences,<br />

which were most helpful in launching<br />

and operating your new business?<br />

My experience in private equity was a<br />

huge asset when I decided to purchase<br />

a business myself. Throughout my career,<br />

I have been heavily involved in M&A and<br />

operational aspects of businesses in various<br />

industry verticals. I had been involved in<br />

overperforming and underperforming<br />

businesses, which presented unique<br />

challenges and successes. The diverse<br />

nature of my experience gave me the most<br />

confidence at the beginning of my<br />

entrepreneurial journey.<br />

When researching franchises to buy,<br />

what criteria or data points mattered<br />

to you most?<br />

I was looking for service-based businesses<br />

with a recurring revenue stream, high client<br />

retention, favorable macro dynamics, and<br />

relatively recession-resistant. The company<br />

I would eventually purchase would also need<br />

to have a great reputation in their market.<br />

Did you speak with other franchise owners?<br />

Which questions did you ask?<br />

When I decided on Right at Home, I made<br />

it my mission to speak with as many<br />

franchisees as possible. I spoke with about<br />

10 different Right at Home owners and then<br />

another owner in a competing franchise<br />

system. They gave me lots of valuable<br />

information.<br />

Which questions did you ask the Right at<br />

Home leadership team?<br />

Most of my questions centered on brand<br />

standards, operational support, marketing<br />

strategies, and what made their most<br />

successful franchisees successful.<br />

What were your biggest challenges<br />

when you first started, and how did you<br />

overcome them?<br />

We closed the acquisition on March 27th,<br />

2020, so I’m sure you can imagine what kind<br />

of challenges we immediately encountered.<br />

In the first month of ownership, 20% of our<br />

client base canceled services due to the<br />

quarantine ordinances put in place by state<br />

and local governments. My main focus was<br />

trying to round up as much PPE as possible.<br />

I even went to vehicle maintenance stores<br />

like AutoZone to find any masks I could use<br />

for my business to keep my employees and<br />

clients safe. Luckily, most of the clients we<br />

initially lost eventually came back on board<br />

a few months later, and we made it out of the<br />

pandemic with flying colors.<br />

How does your franchise support and<br />

encourage your success?<br />

I was impressed with Right at Home’s support<br />

right off the bat. Although I was a new<br />

owner within a new system in an industry<br />

I had never worked in, the pandemic caused<br />

us to be in the same boat. The amount of<br />

support Right at Home corporate gave to us<br />

during the Summer of 2020 is something I’ll<br />

never forget. These days, the biggest asset<br />

corporate provides is the owner network. It is<br />

so nice to call any owner, whether I have met<br />

them in person or not, to bounce ideas off<br />

each other. Typically, conversations intended<br />

to be 5-10 minutes last over an hour!<br />

What are you most proud of and why?<br />

I am most proud of the team we’ve<br />

assembled. It is truly a joy to come to work<br />

every day and reward those who work hard<br />

and do the right thing. Nothing makes me<br />

happier than giving one of my employees a<br />

bonus or a raise. It means they have found<br />

purpose in life and are working hard to make<br />

their dreams come true.<br />

What advice would you give to new<br />

or potential franchise buyers?<br />

Don’t buy a business the week after a<br />

worldwide pandemic is declared! But<br />

seriously, I always recommend talking to as<br />

many other franchise owners as possible<br />

because everybody comes from different<br />

backgrounds, they run their businesses in<br />

different ways, and you never know what you<br />

might learn. The other thing is to always to<br />

do the right and honorable thing—no matter<br />

if it will make things harder for you in the<br />

short term.<br />

are rated as average or below-average<br />

investments. That’s why it’s critical to do your<br />

research. The truth is in the data.<br />

Every year, <strong>Franchise</strong> Business Review<br />

invites all franchise companies based in North<br />

America with ten or more franchise owners to<br />

participate in our <strong>Franchise</strong>e Satisfaction<br />

research at no cost. This in-depth research<br />

reveals the Top 200 <strong>Franchise</strong>s with the highest<br />

3. DEVELOP A REALISTIC<br />

Most companies include high-level information<br />

in their Financial Performance Representations<br />

the average gross sales figures from a limited<br />

group of locations. This is a starting point,<br />

but it’s important to collect as much financial<br />

information as possible to gain a solid picture<br />

of the typical gross sales of the business,<br />

common expenses, cost of goods, and profit<br />

margins.<br />

Develop your business plan based on realistic<br />

financial projections. Ask other franchise<br />

owners how long it took for their business to<br />

ramp up and generate profits. Be sure to<br />

budget accordingly and have a solid cash<br />

reserve in the event that your business takes<br />

a little longer or costs a little more to get off<br />

the ground.<br />

4. PLAN FOR THE LONG HAUL<br />

Business ownership is a long-term investment<br />

strategy. Many people have built significant<br />

wealth by owning and operating franchise<br />

businesses. If you hope to see a profit in just<br />

a year or two, franchising may not be right<br />

for you.<br />

Before purchasing a franchise, be sure to<br />

OUR CRITERIA FOR THIS YEAR’S MOST<br />

PROFITABLE FRANCHISES<br />

To determine this year’s Most Profitable<br />

<strong>Franchise</strong>s, we surveyed nearly 38,000 franchisees<br />

across 385 leading franchise brands.<br />

<strong>Franchise</strong> owners were asked 33 benchmark<br />

questions about their experience and satisfaction<br />

with operating their businesses. Questions<br />

focus on critical areas of the franchise system,<br />

including leadership, financial opportunity,<br />

training, marketing support, operational<br />

support, and franchise culture.<br />

In addition to ranking above the benchmark<br />

for franchisee satisfaction, criteria for<br />

the Most Profitable <strong>Franchise</strong>s List also considered<br />

overall investment level and average<br />

owner incomes. All brands on the list have at<br />

least 25% of their franchise owners earning<br />

annual incomes of $150,000 or higher.<br />

Key findings from <strong>Franchise</strong> Business<br />

Review’s research include:<br />

• The average annual income of franchise<br />

owners is $102,910<br />

• The average annual income of franchise<br />

owners beyond the first two years (considered<br />

the startup period) is $115,688<br />

• The average annual income of franchise<br />

owners who own 2-4 franchise units is<br />

$142,638<br />

• The average annual income of franchise<br />

owners who own 5+ units is $214,418<br />

The data also shows that franchisees from<br />

this year’s Most Profitable <strong>Franchise</strong> brands<br />

rate their satisfaction with their overall financial<br />

performance 19% higher than brands not<br />

on the list, and 9 out of 10 (90%) would<br />

“Recommend their franchise to others.”<br />

“Overall, franchisee income numbers are<br />

down slightly, by about five percent from last<br />

year,” said Stites, “Which is not surprising<br />

given inflation and labor increases. However,<br />

larger, multi-unit franchises are faring better<br />

this year, with reported incomes up by about<br />

five percent. But, franchise owners build<br />

equity over time, so it’s important to consider<br />

the whole investment, including the long-term<br />

value of the business. Much of the wealth that<br />

business owners ultimately realize comes from<br />

long-term equity, which they cash out when<br />

they sell the business.”<br />

Why did you purchase a franchise instead of<br />

opening an independent business?<br />

My decision to purchase a franchise was based<br />

on my goals. I wanted to impact my community<br />

positively while building a business and<br />

acquiring assets that would allow me to build<br />

receiving training and support, and leveraging<br />
