A GROUP of over-55-year-olds 

have hit the stage for the first 

time after discovering the joy of 

classical ballet. 

The Silver Swans showed off 

what they are capable of at Middleton 

Grange School’s Grange 

Theatre on Saturday. 

For most, it was their first 

time onstage under the guidance 

of Bosman Ballet Flow 

founder Celia Bosman. 

“It’s nerve-racking being in a 

live performance and so many 

of these dancers have maybe 

only had a small amount of 

time doing ballet.” 

Silver Swans’ members are 

usually 55 and over, but the 

group welcomes anyone into 

the class, Bosman said. 

Their production of Be 

Moved showcased a variety of 

dance routines, set to an eclectic 

mix of music. 

“I like to give the dancers 

an opportunity to put their 

dancing into literally a different 

stage,” Bosman said. 

“So to experience the joy of 

a live performance and also to 

share their love of that ballet 

with their loved ones.” 

Bosman Ballet Flow specialises 

in teaching classical ballet 

to adults of all abilities. 

Bosman says many adults 

find ballet offers them a fun way 

to get fit and healthy, while providing 

a range of mental, physical, 

and emotional benefits. 

“Ballet’s definitely more 

popular for adults. 

“And I think people are 

realising that it’s not necessarily 

just for the arena of the young 

dancer that wants to become a 

professional. 

“They’re realising that they 

can just do it as purely enjoyment.” 

After the show, the team was 

straight back into rehearsal 

mode for Bosman Ballet Flow, 

with members limbering up 

to celebrate World Ballet Day 

yesterday.

Budding ‘scientists’ receive ECan award

TWO CASHMERE High School 

students were joint winners 

in Environment Canterbury’s 

sustainable resource 

management awards, taking the 

Wrybill Trophy. 

Rowan Matthew, 17, was 

awarded for her project on 

manuka-derived leptospermum 

versus germination and preemergence 

growth, and Millie 

Palmer, 16, was awarded for 

her project on wools versus 

microplastics. 

Rowan started researching 

what the impact of manukaderived 

leptospermum was on 

the germination and 

pre-emergence growth of radish 

at a Canterbury University 

science camp last summer. 

The year 13 student also looked 

into the allelopathic potential 

of manuka to inhibit gorse and 

broom growth to promote beech 

forest conservation. 

Rowan sau\id they were tasked 

with finding solutions to the 

numerous inhibitors of native 

beech forest regrowth in the 

Cass area. 

“One solution that really stuck 

with me was the use of manuka 

to prevent the spread of weeds 

like gorse and broom, while also 

creating a mid-level canopy, in

which the beech saplings could 

grow, preventing death as a 

result of frost.” 

Rowan found manuka’s 

allelochemical, leptospermone, 

affected both the germination 

and pre-emergence growth of 

the radish seeds she used. 

Said Rowan: “It tells us that 

other essential enzymes and 

life functions are disrupted 

by leptospermone, such as the 

function of hydrolase, without 

which the plant could not 

produce energy for growth.” 

Rowan said the Wrybill 

Trophy was a fantastic way for 

her to share her ideas, and is 

excited to see where this research 

takes her in the future. 

Millie impressed the judges 

with a continuation of her 2022 

project using wool to naturally 

filter microplastics out of water. 

In her project called Wool 

versus Microplastics, Millie 

applied different types of wool, 

composite and synthetic mat 

filters to a customised filter 

system attached to a washing 

machine. 

“When I looked at the water 

samples, I found the filters had 

themselves shed fibres into the 

water,” Millie said. 

“The fibres from the wool 

filters are natural though and 

will break down quickly, unlike 

microplastics that can take up 

to 1000 years to break down 

and cause huge damage to our 

marine environments.” 

Millie continues to research 

further solutions with the help 

of the Institute of Science and 

Research. 

The Wrybill Awards have 

been running since 1996 and 

to become a finalist, students 

must exhibit projects on 

environmental themes relating 

to the city council’s portfolios or 

work streams.

Taking action for tuna 


PUPILS FROM St Martins 

School have looked into 

the health of the Ōpāwaho 

Heathcote River and the longfin 

eels – tuna kuwharuwharu 

– that inhabit it. 

Twenty pupils, aged seven to 

nine, were part of a ‘tuna action’ 

group, which worked with Te 

Tuna Tāone programme facilitator 

Jenny Bond. 

Three students from the 

group created a video about the 

long-fin eels and their migration 

story. 

“The group spent many 

of their lunch hours finding 

content, recording their voices, 

filming ‘live’ content and editing 

their video. We are extremely 

proud of the effort and time they 

put into creating this video,” 

said Bond. 

“The video informs viewers 

about the impact dirty 

stormwater is having on our 

rivers and tuna kuwharuwharu 

– pollutants like car oils, toxic 

chemicals, rubbish and dog poo 

all make the river an unhealthy 

habitat. 

“Sediment from increased 

flooding and the loss of natural 

wetland habitats also impacts 

heavily on the health of the 

river.” 

Longfin eels are endemic to 

New Zealand and once every 60 

to 80 years, the species migrate 

across the Pacific Ocean to near 

Tonga, where eggs are laid and 

adult tuna expire. The eggs float 

back on ocean currents to estuaries, 

rivers, lakes and streams. 

“(The pupils) would like to 

be the voice of the tuna, letting 

people know their unique story 

and that sadly, they are under 

threat,” said Bond. 

The video creators have 

designed a mural about the life 

cycle of tuna, its migratory journey, 

healthy versus unhealthy 

rivers, and how to improve the 

health of the river and eels.

Kapa haka brings 

schools together 


SEVEN SCHOOLS are about 

to brave an outdoor stage, at the 

Kahukura Maunga Teitei Kapa 

Haka Festival, for a celebration of 

culture and talent. 

Kahukura is a collaboration of 

7 schools including Somerfield 

School, Cashmere Primary, 

Sacred Heart School, Addington 

School, West Spreydon School, 

Thorrington Primary, and 

Christchurch South Karamata 

Intermediate. 

“Each year we host a kapa 

haka performance named 

Maunga Teitei where each school 

performs a variety of cultural 

items,” said Somerfield teacher 

Daniel Caigou. 

“This started as a kapa 

haka event but over the years 

has included a wider range 

of performances from other 

cultures represented in our 

schools.” 

This year, Muanga Teitei is 

being hosted by West Spreydon 

school on Wednesday from 6 to 

7.30pm. 

“It is an opportunity for 

our students to aim high, and 

challenge themselves to be brave 

and perform to our community. 

COLLABORATE: Each year seven schools come together 

for a kapa haka performance named Maunga Teitei, where 

each school performs a variety of cultural items. 

It started out as an outdoor 

performance so that anyone and 

everyone could attend without 

restrictions,” said Caigou. 

“This way we don’t require a 

large costly venue which would 

force us to sell tickets to cover 

our costs, instead the whole 

whānau can come along and 

enjoy.” 

Families are welcome to bring 

a takeout tea or a picnic, meet 

some other families from around 

the area and enjoy a variety of 

cultural performances. 

“Maunga Teitei derives 

its name from the Māori 

whakatauki, Whāia te iti 

kahurangi, ki te tuohu koe, me he 

maunga teitei,” said Caigou.

Filipino choir showcase 

a ‘second family’ affair 


“A SLICE of paradise” is how the 

Musika Filipinas Aotearoa choir 

is described by soprano singer 

and choir member, Elle Ballado. 

She has been in the group since 

2021 after her family moved 

from the Philippines to New 

Zealand during the pandemic. 

Said the 23-year-old Woolston 

resident: “I was excited to be a 

part of the group . . . It’s like being 

a part of a second family. 

“Being welcomed into a group 

of like-minded people reminds 

me of home and my culture and 

heritage. I think that many immigrants, 

especially Filipinos, 

feel lonely.” 

Ballado said her parents were 

also members of the choir. 

“Finding a tight-knit 

community helps reduce 

homesickness 

and reminds 

them they are 

not alone,” said 

the third-year

different sounds in music. Filipinos 

are great at imitating sounds 

– which is quite a talent.” 

Ty has been conducting the 

Musika choir for about a year, 

and this will be his first time performing 

as the musical director. 

Said Ty: “This concert is also a 

celebration of the members’ hard 

work, dedication and artistic 

growth throughout the year. It is 

a moment of personal pride and 

accomplishment.” 

Held at Te Hapua: Halswell 

Centre on November 11 the concert 

will be MC’d by Plivia Alaba 

and also includes performances 

from the Class Act Barbershop 

Quartet, the Canterbury Japanese 

Choir, Ritmo Pilipino and 

others. 

The event starts at 1.30pm and

students featured prominently 

in the Zonta secondary schools 

sports awards. 

Meghan Baker (above) won 

most outstanding achievement 

in a single sport for girls, and 

Ben Mclauchlan took out the 

contribution to sports administration 

(boys). 

Meghan has had an excellent 

season of cycling. She was a 

winner in all her races at school 

and club level and was the overall 

U19 women’s champion. 

The judges said Meghan stood 

out because of her ability to ride 

successfully on the road, track, 

time trials, keirins, madison 

and wheelraces. 

She was the first-ever female 

to win the Harcourts 4 Seasons 

Realty Wheelrace at the South 

Island championships, She also 

won five events at the national 

track championships. 

She was selected into the New 

Zealand team for the junior 

world track championships in 

Colombia. 

Ben received his award as a 

rugby, touch and basketball 

referee. 

Said the judges: “Ben is an 

outstanding young referee 

in multiple codes. He is very 

professional in the way that he 

conducts himself and always 

commands respect from all 

players. Ben is passionate about 

refereeing and is always keen 

to develop his craft through accepting 

multiple appointments 

during the year across all three 

codes.” 

There were 149 nominations 

from 22 schools, which the 

judges whittled down to 91 

finalists. 

The Zonta Club of

Cavies count down 

to mega pet show 


MEET Tweedledee, a shorthaired 

tweed guinea pig (cavy) lining up 

for the Garden City Cavy Club’s 

annual mega pet show. 

The 18-month-old cavy, owned 

and shown by club committee 

member Jason Lennie, will also 

be entering the final ‘all breeds 

competition’ for the year, held 

alongside the mega pet show on 

Saturday. 

Said Lennie: “The cavy 

competition and show is a lot 

like a bird show. The cavies are 

judged on their personality, 

health and condition, and against 

breed standards. 

“It’s a perfect opportunity for 

breeders, owners and anyone 

interested to get together and 

connect.” 

The all-breeds show starts at 

10.30am, where different breeds 

will be showcased and then 

judged against their specific 

breed standards. 

All cavy breeds have some 

shared general standards, such 

as the head profile should be 

rounded and have large eyes 

and large, smooth ears; the body 

should be strong and of compact 

build; and coat colour should 

be clearly defined and thorough 

from root to tip. The rest of the 

standards depend on the breed. 

The mega pet show will begin 

at noon, where judging begins 

for novelty classes including 

single colour pet, owner-cavy 

lookalike, calmest pet, elderly 

pet (over three years), cutest baby 

(under five months), craziest hair, 

heaviest pet, plus the grass eating 

competition and a free dress-up 

class. 

“There will be a $2 entry per 

pet per class, except for the dressup 

class. We are excited to be 

having some fun novelty classes 

and I hope the competition 

brings forward more cavy 

owners from around the region,” 

said Lennie. 

“Club members, both junior 

and adults . . . and anyone 

walking in on the day can join in 

and watch. Bring your piggy to
