Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Hemingway’s Restaurant on Beach Avenue in Cape 

May. You’ll find this year-round steak and seafood restaurant inside 

the Grand Hotel. 

The vibe: It was a quiet Tuesday and they had just turned over from 

breakfast to begin serving lunch. We decided to pick up some takeout 

before heading back to the office after a morning of riding bikes through 

town collecting content for social media and some upcoming promos. 

Special shoutout to Jonathan Hirsch and the Boarding House for lending 

us a few of their bikes for the adventure. They partner with Priority 

Bicycles to offer their guests a nice cruise through town during their 

stay. Check them out at boardinghousecapemay.com — might be time 

for a staycation or to book next year’s trip to Cape May. 

The food: Anyway... back to what we ate for lunch! Hemingway’s 

lunch menu is full of soups, salads, sandwiches and some seafood 

dishes that are quite tempting. We opted to keep things simple. 

Kayla enjoyed a chicken Caesar wrap with French fries, Katie went 

for a chicken quesadilla served with salsa and sour cream, Nicole had 

the turkey club wrap with fries and Courtney the French onion soup. 

Important to note all our fries were piping hot — a takeout detail we 

always pay close attention to. All our meals — a couple of which we 

saved half of for dinner — were both tasty and filling. Hemingway’s is 

not a place to skip when making your lunch plans. 

The takeaway: Hemingway’s restaurant is open daily, serving 

breakfast daily 8-11:30am, lunch 12-3:30pm and dinner Sunday-Thursday 

4-9pm and Friday-Saturday 4-10pm. The Bar in open 

Sunday-Thursday 12-10pm and Friday-Saturday 12pm-1am. They’re 

Prime Rib night every Wednesday is a can’t-miss night out and their 

fall specials are worth a try which include wild mushroom pasta and 

chicken picatta. Football Sunday is another good time to visit Hemingway’s. 

They’ve got the games playing, beer flowing and plenty on the 

dinner menu you’ll want to feast on.

The ladies of G-Fit — a virtual workout group that began during Covid — return to Cape May for their annual in-person weekend workout. 

The 30 ladies traveled largely from Northeast Pennsylvania and Ohio to attend the getaway.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Times were that Cape May’s tourist 

economy shut down after Labor Day. 

But now that Cape May has been 

widely recognized as a bird watching 

Mecca, the season has extended to 

at least the Columbus Day Weekend, when 

hundreds of eager hawk watchers descend for 

what has come to be the peak of the autumn 

hawk migration at “the Migration Mainline. 

On Saturday of Columbus Day Weekend, 

the hawk watch platform hosted over 200 

avid hawk watchers from all across North 

America. The park parking lot was as full as 

a Saturday in summer. Included in the lot 

were two 15-passenger vans from Virginia 

and their contingent of hawk watchers. 

The hawks didn’t disappoint, once the 

winds turned northwest and the sun began 

perking some thermals, there was never a 

moment when hawks were not in the air. 

Peregrines were regular, feisty Merlins 

sparred over the dunes, Kestrels zipped by 

in spurts. CMBO’s seasonal interns made 

sure every passing raptor was pinpointed 

and identified. They even offered free tutorials 

on raptor identification. Many visitors 

have made the weekend a 20, even 30-year 

tradition, but more fascinating for me were 

the many first-timers who saw the standing 

crowds and came up to see what all the 

excitement was all about. What they got was 

not only a lesson in natural history but a 

glimpse into a parallel universe. Bird watching 

might have been a closet avocation once, 

now its mainstream and I was taken by the 

many makes and models of binoculars that 

have, after five decades of evolution, excel in 

the hawk watching arena, first among them 

Swarovoski Optik, the sponsor of the hawk 

watch. Built in Austria, the optically fine 

instruments are a favorite among birders, 

and rightfully so. As someone who has visited 

the Swarovski factory, I can assure you that 

the quality control surpasses all but the most 

exact standards. You can even test drive a pair 

on the platform. Prepare to be wowed! 

You say, you tried bird watching but found 

it frustrating? I say you had lousy binoculars. 

Try it again with a glass suited to the task. Go 

up on the hawk watch platform, find out what 

instruments serious birders are using. And 

train a loaner Swarovski on the waterfowl 

dotting Bunker Pond, the green speculum on 

a Green-winged teal, winking in the sun, will 

blow you back to a brain stem. 

Try it. The Cape May hawk watch from 

now until the end of November, it’s the natural 

history spectacle in your own backyard.

Ah sweet nostalgia! It’s present in 

almost every rebooted franchise 

nowadays. You would think it’s a 

recipe for success by pleasing 

both new and old crowds. But is it 

always? The Exorcist: Believer uses nostalgia 

when it fits the plot but refuses to adhere to 

already established source material. David 

Gordon Green’s Exorcist reimagining, like his 

Halloween reboot, brushes aside material that 

made the original film famous. 

My favorite part of the original is Father 

Damien and possessed Reagan engaging in 

conversation. Tension and intrigue glue your 

eyes to the screen as the demon does not 

kill the priest but teases him. The audience 

believed that the demon who was possessing 

Reagan had power without it fully being seen. 

Spoiler Alert: The sequel does the opposite. 

The demon inside the two girls, Katherine 

and Angela, is able to control lights and use 

extreme physical force. Yes, the demon that 

possessed Reagan in the original was violent, 

but it was because the demon had a mission. 

The Movie Column

Father Karras was the target because he questioned 

his faith. What better prize for a demon 

than a man of God who can be teased! It is 

only until the true Exorcist, Father Merrin, 

arrives that Father Karras regains his faith. 

As for the reboot, the mission for the demon 

to possess the two girls is never mentioned. 

My biggest problem with this reboot is 

that there is no Exorcist present! The film 

was trying to instill the idea that anyone can 

be an Exorcist because if you believe, you can 

combat the forces of evil. Unsurprisingly, this 

interesting idea falls flat due to poor writing 

and plot structure. As the exorcism continues 

it becomes abundantly clear that the absence 

of an actual Exorcist weakened the film. 

So are there any positives? First the acting 

was strong, which was led by Lidya Jewitt and 

Olivia O’Neill who played the two possessed 

children. There is also the script which was a 

gift and a curse. The ending was largely weak 

but there were moments that made me think 

I was watching a good movie. Specifically 

the scene where Lidya Jewitts’ character is 

talking to her father. There was chemistry 

between the two, and it was genuine to watch 

their relationship grow. Of course, this whole 

review would be for naught if I did not mention 

that amazing theme song! 

In the end, Exorcist fans were disappointed 

and must look to the past! Check out 

the massively underrated film, The Exorcism of 

Emily Rose, which did everything right that this 

film did wrong.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, find some goodies at a craft show! 

There’s a shopping meme going around 

social media that asserts, “Target will 

tell you what you need from Target.” 

Craft lovers agree — they don’t go to the 

craft fair for something specific. Instead, 

they go to discover something. Those who shop 

the “collectibles” part of a craft and collectibles 

fair are different. Collectors usually look for very 

specific items. 

Craft lovers are there to appreciate the 

handmade items. They know that prices should 

reflect the raw materials, the time spent creating 

the item, and the years spent learning the craft, 

whether it’s knitting or painting or leather work. 

These shoppers want to treat themselves, or 

their gift recipients. Craft lovers take their time 

at the fair, looking at every stall and stopping to 

speak to the artists. They linger. 

Collectors often speed through a fair. If they 

collect, say, vintage porcelain boxes, they know 

they are looking for a rectangular one with a lid, 

and they don’t want to lose out to another collector. 

They may chat with vendors to ask about 

future availability, or fantastic finds, but they 

tend not to linger. 

Gift shopping changes these calculations, 

of course. Both types of shoppers should come 

armed with a list, not just of who they want to 

buy for, but something about them — instead of 

just “Heather,” your list might remind you that 

she is 24, training for a 10K, and living in a a tiny 

student apartment. These notes might stop you 

from adding to the angel collection she had as 

a child or buying a large piece of holiday decor, 

and instead treat her to one of those hair accessories 

that doubles as a wallet, or a luxurious 

lotion for her sore feet. A fellow Cape May lover 

might appreciate a piece of seaside-themed art. 

Sustainable gifts like reusable beeswax food 

wrappers are a treat for the friend who lives 

on leftovers. Consumable items, like unusual 

dips and sauces, are great for both older people 

looking to declutter and young people with 

limited space. Almost anyone can appreciate a 

bottle of antibacterial gel with a pleasant scent 

to keep in the car. Cape May’s Convention Hall 

has several shows coming up. On November 4, 

there’s the “Fall Craft & Collectibles Show” from 

10am to 4pm. On November 24 and 25, there’s a 

“Holiday Craft & Collectibles Show,” and “Crafts 

at Christmas” arrives on December 2. Prepare 

to park a few blocks away — the vendors often 

occupy the spaces closest to Convention Hall. 

Bring cash as well as credit cards in case the 

credit card machines are wonky. Bring your 

reusable tote bag to carry your gifts home. Enjoy 

your food outside of the sales area to avoid spills.

invitations on which we ask guests not to bring 

children. We don’t think this is an uncommon 

request. The reception is at Congress Hall and 

we are not planning a kid-friendly night. My 

cousin asked if she could be the exception and 

bring her eight-year-old daughter because our 

wedding date “falls on her weekend.” I told 

her no, miffed that she would even ask. Then 

she asked if I was then providing childcare. 

I simply said, “Do I take it you will not be 

attending?” “Of course I’m coming,” she said. 

She is still texting me, asking about childcare. 

How do I end this without getting the entire 

family involved? She has never been one who 

takes no for an answer. — Flustered Bride

Wise answers to perplexing questions 

Dear Flustered 

You deflect. Get the family involved and 

make them your wingman. Your mother or 

father should pick up the phone and talk to her 

mother and sort it out. Another alternative for 

your unimaginative cousin would be to call 

on friend or the family of one of her friends. 

She could spend the night, which would be a 

lot more fun than hanging out with a bunch 

of adults. Finally, she could switch weekends 

with her ex. These are all suggestions which 

should come from someone else. You have 

more important things to worry about. 

Dear Answer Lady 

My best friend is recently divorced. She 

married her high school sweetheart, so she is 

not very sophisticated when it comes to men. 

A very handsome man has been wooing her 

who doesn’t have a great reputation. He preys 

on divorcees. I also know he has heard that she 

has money. What do I do? How do I warn her 

without alienating her? — Worried Friend 

Dear Worried 

You take her out to dinner. The Filling 

Station would be a good place. Tell her what 

you know. Tell her you love her and don’t want 

to see anyone take advantage of her, but you 

do not castigate him. She is vulnerable. The 

only thing you can do is to tell her not to give 

him any money without consulting a financial 

adviser and make sure he likes her more than 

her money. She will, of course, deny all this 

and ignore your concerns. Then you must shut 

up and resolve to stand by her no matter what.

of energy. Lady Avery is good with children

would make a wonderful family pet. 

THOR is a young dog that can be nervous in 

new situations. He loves playing fetch and 

can continue to go for hours with his endless 

energy. Thor’s leash skills are improving, and 

he continues to learn new behavior cues daily. 

He would be best in a quiet home with older 

children and would need a slow introduction 

to cats and other dogs. 

ZEKE is a one-and-a-half-year-old boy who 

came to the shelter when his owner could no 

longer care for him. He is a happy pup who 

loves attention. Zeke is learning proper leash 

manners and enjoys his brisk walks. He also 

loves car rides and is crate trained. Zeke would 

make a wonderful companion for a family 

with older children.

or dogs. An adult only household would also 

suit Squeaks well.
