In what promises to be one

Prize-winning novel, The Promise,

fabulous day out 

Johannesburg witnessed a vibrant and spirited event as 9 000 

participants flooded the streets for the SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi, 

conquering both the 5km fun run and 10km races. After three years 

of virtual presentations due to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 

pandemic, this year’s live event marked a triumphant return that filled 

the streets with runners and smiles. The SPAR Women’s Challenge Jozi 

is a cornerstone of SPAR’s sponsorship goals, dedicated to supporting 

women, particularly women in sports and continues to empower 

women, promote fitness and positively impact the community. As the 

event celebrates its return to the streets of Johannesburg, it remains a 

beacon of hope, unity and resilience.

Three cheers for 

fun-filled festival 

Who would have thought that Albertonians would travel to Emperors 

Palace for a festival? Well, the proof is in the pudding when you meet 

a number of them for Bavarian culture and foot-stomping fun. They 

joined a host of other fun-lovers at an Oktober Bierfest at the Palace of 

Dreams’ Red Roman Shed which featured the Oompah Kings providing 

German bierfest music in the afternoon and Clint & Co entertaining 

in the evening. And some, like Henk Koekemoer, even dressed up for 

the Bavarian celebration. There was a wide variety of craft beers, gins, 

brandies and rums, as well as delicious food to sample.

Young singer hopes to 

inspire 

From a young age Britney Meistre courageously followed 

her heart and embraced her talent 

for creating music 

Born and raised in Meyersdal, Johannesburg 

South, Britney Meistre (23) 

began harnessing her singing talent 

from a tender age. ‘My soul was a 

symphony waiting to be composed. 

As a mere toddler, barely stringing 

sentences together, I already wielded 

a microphone and danced across the 

keys of pianos,’ said Britney. 

Who is Britney Meistre? 

Growing up in Johannesburg South, 

Britney attended Saint Martin’s Prep 

School and Waterstone College High 

School. She has always been drawn to 

music and her earliest ambition was 

to stand before an audience in a sold 

out stadium. 

The talented young woman has 

completed her BCom law degree and 

is currently completing her honours, a 

postgraduate diploma in global business 

management. ‘At school I never 

enjoyed sports, I was always drawn 

to the arts and culture. I was involved 

in every possible school show, choir 

event or talent showcase and absolutely 

loved it,’ said Britney. 

She started singing lessons at the age 

of 12 which helped her build a good 

foundation; learning all the tools and 

techniques needed. 

When Britney is not immersed in her 

daily routine, she laces up her boxing 

gloves and steps into the boxing ring. 

‘Boxing is not just a way to stay in 

shape, it’s my thrilling and exhilarating 

escape from the everyday grind. 

The combination of physical and 

mental discipline it demands keeps 

me on my toes and adds an exciting 

punch to my life,’ she explained. 

She also has an interest in beauty 

and fashion, often spending her free 

time researching the latest trends on 

make-up and fashion. 

When she’s not boxing or pampering 

herself, Britney enjoys spending quality 

time with her family. ‘Our parents 

are our role models. They’ve shown 

us the value of hard work and good 

morals. Their dedication and kindness 

have taught us important life lessons. 

They’re the foundation of our success 

and the reason we strive to do better 

in life.’ 

Her Idols SA moment 

In 2017, at the age of 16, Britney entered 

Idols SA Season 13. ‘I will never 

forget how my family and I decided. 

My dad was sitting in the lounge and 

my mom and I were cooking in the 



kitchen. My dad saw the advert for Idols SA auditions and said I should give it a 

go. A suggestion that would change the course of my life forever.’ 

She highlighted that she never imagined receiving a golden ticket. However, 

destiny had plans of its own for Britney. She secured her place in the competition, 

making it through Theatre Week and almost to the Top 16, where she 

unfortunately fell short. It was an experience that she never thought she would 

be blessed enough to have. She describes that every second felt like she was in 

a dream and on cloud nine. ‘It was the best experience of my life.’ 

However, just falling short of Top 16 did not stop Britney. Her idols journey 

allowed her to further grow, enhancing her singing ability and bringing her to 

a place of realisation. ‘After that I think it was a huge turning point in my career 

because then I realised that I can make a career out of singing.’ 

Immersing herself in her craft 

Following her enjoyable experience on Idols SA, Britney shifted her focus to 

vocal lessons and musical courses to fully equip herself with all the techniques 

necessary to succeed in the music industry. 

The music knowledge thrust her into song writing. ‘This newfound passion 

bore fruit in the form of my debut single, Where Are You Now, a collaborative 

endeavour I undertook with my friend, Lee Cole. Together, we composed and 

produced this. My very first song that was released on all major platforms and 

made it to a multitude of radio stations and Apple Music playlists which marked 

another huge turning point in my music career.’ 

The unexpected success of Where Are You Now sparked motivation within the 

artist which propelled her deeper along her path of self-expression through 

creating music. “It affirmed my unwavering commitment to crafting and sharing 

my unique musical narrative.” 

Since the release of her debut single, she has released two more singles, titled 

What About Us and By My Side which she recorded in Hollywood, California, 

with producers that scouted her during her participation in a talent competition 

in Texas. 

‘Being there among a whole lot of artists and people that have the same passion 

and interest as you was an experience that I will never forget and forever 

hold dear to my heart. So far I have had over 10 million listeners tune in and 

listening to the radio, which is an absolute dream come true.’ 

Off the cuff: 

• Do you prefer food, travel or art? 

Travel. 

• In high school, what clique were you in? 

I was friends with everyone. 

• Who is your hero? 

My parents. 

• Rain vs sunshine? 

Sunshine 

• What is your ultimate spoil? 

Shopping, spa days and beauty treatments. 

• What do you most love about city life and living in Alberton? 

My friends and family are close by, lots of good places to eat at. 

• What are your wardrobe must-haves? 

Good pair of jeans, little black dress, smart work blazer, high-top sneakers. 

• What are your pet peeves? 

Negative vibes. 

• What do you always have with you when you leave the house? 

I always have lipstick, chewing gum, my cellphone and airpods. 

• What would you do if you won R1m tomorrow? 

There is so much you could do for the greater good with money like that. I 

think my number one thing to do would be to open an orphanage. I love 

children and my heart breaks to see children suffer. 

Her music, her message 

‘Music is an escape, it is an enjoyment 

and can be a healing component. Music 

is powerful in getting a message 

out there to the world and a message 

that people can relate to through the 

lyrics to find healing, strength, motivation, 

courage and passion.’ 

She draws inspiration from all types 

of music and artists including Adele, 

Rihanna and Alicia Keys. 

She aims to help people struggling 

through difficult experiences and 

complex emotions. ‘I hope that they 

can find inspiration within my songs 

and that it can help them escape 

reality, the way it helped me. When I 

write my songs, something that always 

goes through my mind is how can 

I make this song relatable to others 

going through a similar experience or 

challenge.’ 

According to the artist, each new composition 

is a testament to the magic 

and escapism that music offers us, a 

gift we’re privileged to enjoy. It’s a way 

of expressing ourselves, it’s an escape 

and a healing tool for the world. 

She has always believed that singing in 

church has been the most rewarding 

part of her musical journey, by helping 

people connect with and bringing 

them closer to God. 

“I think my biggest goal would be to 

serve God with my talent and in any 

way possible with my music - to draw 

people nearer to him and use it to 

serve him at the end of the day,” she 

emphasises. 

Spring into summer 

Britney said her advice for staying 

healthy and active during the summer 

season is going for hikes and 

leisurely walks as sneaky ways to stay 

fit. ‘We get caught up in the beauty 

of nature without realising we’re 

working out.’ 

She also recommends boxing classes 

as another fun way to keep in shape.

blends her musical 

passion with a dedicated 

teaching career, filling 

her life with melodies, 

education, and student 

inspiration.

It is all about 

harmony in life 

Mariska, aka Mia, is a talented individual who skilfully balances 

her passion for music with her dedication as a teacher. With a 

busy schedule and a deep love for both professions, her life is 

filled with music, teaching, and the joy of making a difference 

in the lives of her students. 

A day in her life 

Daily, she starts her mornings early, waking up at 5am. She 

commutes from Sunninghill to Kempton Park, where she 

teaches at Laerskool Kempton Park Full Service School. 

Her days are never the same because she divides her time 

between teaching, extra classes, and netball until 3pm. 

Despite the demanding schedule, she finds time for herself 

and enjoys a walk and preparing dinner before her evening 

commitments. 

Music is part of who she is 

‘My journey in music began at a young 

age. As a three-year-old, I discovered my 

love for singing while performing in my 

parents’ living room,’ Mariska said. 

Her father, who was Jody Wayne’s drummer, 

sparked her interest and passion for 

music, and it did not take long for her to 

showcase her talent to the world. 

She then enrolled herself in a competition, 

surprising her parents upon their 

return home. ‘Winning that competition 

marked the beginning of my professional career, leading me 

to perform in shows and festivals.’ 

While she has written a few songs, she thrives when collaborating 

with other writers. She finds the process of working 

with other creative minds fascinating. Starting with a main 

idea or a story, Mariska shares her thoughts and inspires her 

collaborators. This collaborative effort allows the creation of 

meaningful and engaging music. 

Best of both worlds 

Being a teacher is greatly important to Mariska, and she takes 

immense pride in her profession. Teaching requires patience 

and strong listening skills, and she acknowledges the challenges 

of balancing her time between both passions. 

At times, singing takes a backseat, especially during demanding 

periods such as exams. However, she effectively 

manages her time by planning her schedule around her term 

programme, ensuring she can fully devote herself to teaching 

and music. 

Mariska finds moments of fulfilment in music and teaching 

that make everything worthwhile. In music, it’s the exhilarating 

experience of having the audience sing along and 

genuinely enjoy her performance. 

As a teacher, the simple gestures from her students, such as 

drawings, letters, or hugs, remind her why she chose this path

and perseveres through the challenges and discipline. 

Currently, she is concentrating on writing her own songs. She 

plans to take her compositions to her producer for feedback 

and guidance. Additionally, she has lined up numerous shows 

throughout the year, and her social media platforms provide 

updates and information about her upcoming performances. 

Throughout her journey, Mariska has learnt an important 

lesson: never change oneself for anyone or anything. It is 

crucial to stay true to one’s roots, remember where one came 

from, and remain connected to the reasons that sparked the 

passion in the first place. 

This and that 

On a personal note, Mariska’s journey is filled with unique 

experiences and diverse interests. Born in Odendalsrus and 

raised in Limpopo, her studies eventually 

led her to Potchefstroom, where she pursued 

her education. Mariska’s close bond 

with her older sister, who shares her love 

for singing, was a supportive foundation 

for their musical pursuits. Fond memories 

of spending time with her father in the 

garage working on car engines hold a 

special place in Mariska’s heart. 

After residing in Sunninghill, Sandton, 

Mariska attended Laerskool Krugerpark 

and Hoërskool Piet Potgieter. Her 

academic journey continued at the NWU Pukke University 

of Potchefstroom, where she attained a Bachelor’s degree 

in education, specialising in intermediate and senior phase 

education. 

Mariska’s love story took an unexpected turn when she met 

her husband at university through his ex-girlfriend. Their connection 

blossomed, leading to their marriage in 2023. 

‘Embracing life’s unpredictability, I find each day a unique 

adventure.’ While some days are hectic and filled with activity, 

others offer a more relaxed pace, even though her definition 

of relaxation may differ from other people’s. In her spare 

time, she enjoys exercising, taking long walks while listening 

to music, and indulging in her fascination with serial killer 

documentaries. 

If she could change something about the world, Mariska 

would instil a sense of empathy in every person. Recognising 

the tendency to become self-absorbed, she believes that 

fostering empathy is key to creating a more compassionate 

and understanding society. 

In an alternate career path, Mariska envisions herself as a 

‘doggie daycare lady’, relishing the joy and fun of caring for 

dogs. Her spontaneous and energetic nature, combined with 

her deep sense of empathy and love for others, form the 

foundation of her personality.

Easy fig tart 

Fruit & nut base, vanilla yoghurt & honey 

Take the fuss out of creating a showstopping 

dessert with this super-quick 

no-cook fig tart – a delicate base of 

crushed fruit and nuts, topped with 

yoghurt, figs and a drizzle of honey. 

Serves 8 • Total time 10 minutes, plus chilling 

300g luxury fruit and nut mix, 500g Greek 

yoghurt, 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste, 

1 teaspoon runny honey, plus extra to 

serve, 4 perfectly ripe figs 

Line a 20cm springform cake tin with 

grease-proof paper. Tip the fruit and nuts 

into a food processor and blitz until fine 

and tacky (it should be easy to mould 

with your hands), then push and press 

it into the base of the lined tin, and 

2.5cm up the sides. Leave to firm up in 

the freezer for 1 hour. When the time’s 

up, mix the yoghurt with the vanilla and 

1 teaspoon of honey, then spoon into 

the chilled tart case. Freeze for 1 further 

hour, or until slightly set. Release the tart 

from the tin, halve or quarter the figs 

and arrange nicely on top, then drizzle 

generously with honey, to finish. 



Feta filo turnovers 

Fresh marjoram, runny honey & 

pistachio sprinkle 

“When I was a teenager visiting Cyprus 

on holiday, I was wowed by the recipes 

that would cook feta rather than just 

serve it in salads raw. For me, this is 

so incredibly simple, satisfying and 

impressive.” 

Serves 4 • Total time 20 minutes 

4 sheets of filo pastry, 200g feta cheese, 

half a bunch of marjoram (10g), 25g 

shelled unsalted pistachios, runny 

honey, to serve 

Lay a sheet of filo on a damp tea towel 

and brush lightly with olive oil. Crumble 

a quarter of the feta across one side of 

the pastry, leaving a 3cm gap around 

the edges, and pick over a quarter of 

the marjoram leaves. Carefully fold over 

the filo, press the edges to seal, then 

fold in half again, pressing down gently 

to secure. Brush lightly with olive oil. 

Place a large non-stick frying pan on 

a medium heat with a splash of olive 

oil, add the filo parcel and cook for 2 

minutes on each side, or until golden 

and crisp, then transfer to a serving 

plate. Meanwhile, bash or roughly chop 

the pistachios. Drizzle the parcel with 

honey and scatter over a quarter of 

the pistachios. Repeat with the rest of 

the ingredients, serving each parcel as 

soon as it’s ready. 

Big, bold 

flavours 

Garlic chicken 

Creamy chickpeas, spinach & sumac 

Inspired by some of the wonderful flavours of 

Lebanon, this quick dish is perfect for an easy 

meal. Hunting out nice fat jarred chickpeas is 

game-changing when it comes to both flavour 

and texture. 

Serves 2 • Total time 18 minutes 

4 cloves of garlic, 2 x 150g skinless chicken 

breasts, half a 700g jar of chickpeas, 250g baby 

spinach, 1 heaped teaspoon sumac 

Peel the garlic cloves and slice lengthways, 

then place in a large non-stick frying pan on 

a high heat with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 

stirring regularly. Slice each chicken breast 

lengthways into 3 strips, then toss with a pinch 

of sea salt and black pepper. Once the garlic 

is nicely golden, quickly remove from the pan 

with a slotted spoon, leaving the flavoured oil 

behind. Go in with the chicken and cook for 5 

minutes, or until golden and cooked through, 

turning regularly. 

Remove the chicken from the pan and tip in 

the chickpeas (juices and all). Add the spinach, 

along with most of the garlic and 1 tablespoon 

of red wine vinegar, then toss over the heat 

until the spinach has wilted and the chickpeas 

are hot through. Season to perfection with salt 

and pepper, then return the chicken to the 

pan and finish with the reserved garlic and a 

generous dusting of sumac.

Plant with purpose 

Maximise your garden with multi-purpose plants and take care of unwanted pests 

The Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) is a much loved indoor plant, lush 

and leafy green, compact and undemanding. It’s always been a 

stellar performer with the additional quality of being an effective 

air purifier. But did you know that there are more than one 

variety of peace lily, in particular the big-leaved Spathiphyllum 

‘Sensation’, that grows up to 2m high and with deeply ribbed 

leaves can be almost 1m long. Because of their large leaf mass, 

such plants are particularly effective as air purifiers. Like all other 

Spathiphyllum, ‘Sensation’ grows in moderate to bright indirect 

light and needs lightly moist soil. Details: lvgplant.co.za

Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes lucida) is a new arrival on the herb scene. Its 

other name is Mexican tarragon. The strongly flavoured leaves are sweeter than 

French tarragon and have a liquorice/anise fragrance. This hardy perennial herb 

is also more heat and drought tolerant than traditional tarragon. It is compact 

and bushy, 30 to 60cm high and thrives in full sun in ordinary garden soil. Grow 

from seed and water young plants regularly until they are established. Thereafter 

water deeply once a week in summer to ensure plenty of lush, edible leaves. 

Harvest the individual leaves or sprigs. It flowers from summer through to the 

beginning of winter. The plant forms a clump that can be divided after two to 

three years. Chop and add the fresh leaves to sauces, salads, soups and chicken 

dishes. Make a tarragon pesto for spicy Mexican dishes and pasta. The leaves can 

be dried but don’t have quite the same intense flavour. Add the flowers to salads

Garden tasks for November 

• There is still time to sow a second 

crop of quick growing annuals like 

alyssum, dwarf marigolds, nasturtiums, 

portulaca, and California poppy. 

• Perennials such as yarrow, hollyhocks, 

blue marguerite, Michaelmas daisy, 

Oriental poppy, Penstemon, and 

scabious can be sown from seed too. 

• Feed hydrangeas once a month and 

water more often if it gets very hot. 

Renew mulch around shrubs, roses, 

and any area where the soil is exposed. 

• November is the peak time for 

pests. Use an organic insecticide like 

Ludwig’s Insect Spray as soon as you 

notice insect infestation. Spray once a 

week until the pests are gone. 

• Succession sowing of most 

vegetables can be continued up until 

the end of this month. 

• To prevent fungus diseases in the 

lawn, do not water during the hottest 

time of the day. Rather water early in 

the morning or late afternoon.

Off-the-grid safari 

A grounding, explorer-style experience in the Karoo ... 

Samara’s eco-conscious Plains Camp is all about reconnecting with nature, 

with the focus on the ultimate luxuries ... time and space. 


There’s no Wi-Fi. No electricity. No 

high-tech distractions. What there is, 

is time. And space. And solitude. And 

a whole load of unpretentious, oldschool 

safari luxury. 

Four tents, with a fifth serving as a 

communal mess tent, hug a low hill 

in a remote part of the Samara Karoo 

Reserve, with views over the plains 

towards the impressive mountain 

range. Plains where springbok 

and gemsbok, zebra and giraffe, 

wildebeest and ostrich meander 

and graze. 

The emphasis is on ecotourism, an 

explorer-style experience where the 

early morning bush walks are the 

highlight. Yes, you may well walk 

with cheetah (Samara is well known 

for its hugely successful cheetah 

conservation programme started in 

2004.). But it’s also a time to explore 

the smaller things so often missed 

on a drive ... tracks and birds’ nests 

and ostrich eggs and flowering Karoo 

bossies. Maybe a snake or two. 

Evening game drives see guides 

venture further away, often up the 

mountains (a hair-raising ride for those 

nervous of heights!) to the plateau 

on top where the game is abundant 

... mountain zebra, always, and often 

lion. G&Ts and Amarula and cold 

beers always taste better in the wild 

and with a view ... after sundowners, 

the drive winds its way back to camp. 

Along the way, fairly large crashes 

of rhino (dehorned for their safety), 

buffalo, and a small herd of elephant 

... rounding off the Big Five there are 

signs of leopard, but sightings are rare. 

The experience continues back at 

the camp. In the mess tent - a soft, 

worn khaki leather sofa, well-thumbed 

books, binocs for game spotting - 

guests are treated to simple but tasty 


meals ... if the weather plays fair, around the fire under the 

Jacketplum tree, otherwise in the tent next to the fireplace. 

There’s a small farm-style plunge pool for really welcome dips 

during the heat of the day, a bar cart for equally welcome 

drinks anytime. 

The guests’ tents are made to resemble the semi-permanent 

mobile camps set up during safaris years ago - and they’re 

not short on luxury. In shades of khaki, pumpkin and oatmeal, 

with twin, incredibly comfy, beds, the team have thought of 

everything ... from warm robes and slippers to flasks of boiling 

water so you can sip coffee or tea on the deck. There’s no 

electricity, but solar lamps provide all the light you need, and 

there’s an indoor loo and basin with constantly-refilled jugs 

of water, and an outside open-air bucket shower, filled with 

hot water on request. Always keeping sustainability and being 

eco-conscious top of mind, a set of biodegradable toiletries is 

provided. Each tent also has a small fireplace - madly welcome 

for winter stays. 

With a maximum of eight guests, and a small but efficient 

on-site team, this off-grid experience really does allow you 

to completely relax, unwind, reconnect with nature and 

remember what’s really important in life. 

There’s a launch special for South African residents - pay 

for two nights, stay for three - until December 15, with 

rates from R4 750 per person sharing per night, inclusive 

of accommodation, game drives, bush walks and all meals.
