Flexing her age
Meet Zirkia Gregorowski, a woman who defied the odds and became a
real-life superhero in the world of bodybuilding, despite doctors’ bleak
predictions about her physical abilities as a child.
Text: ALANICKA LOTRIET. • Photographer: HILDA MANS. • Make-up & hair: HEIDIE FOURIE. • Venue: KLEINKAAP BOUTIQUE HOTEL.
Zirkia Gregorowski’s journey of triumph
and transformation began with a car
accident at the tender age of five, an
incident that would change the course
of her life forever. She found herself
with a shattered femur and a severely
injured back. Doctors gave her parents
a grim prognosis – she might never be
able to participate in sports.
For many children, it would have
been the final nail in the coffin of
their athletic dreams. But Zirkia was
far from ordinary. She’s just always had
an unbreakable spirit, an unwavering
ambition, and a tenacity that defied
the odds. The doctor’s words were not
the end for her, but rather the spark
that ignited her passion for sports.
To say that her road to recovery was
difficult is putting it mildly. Although
Zirkia spent a gruelling year in traction,
she emerged from this challenging
time with a newfound determination
... a warrior’s spirit that would carry her
through the rest of her life.
By the end of her first year in school,
she had cast aside her crutches and
from that moment, never looked back
and never stopped playing sports. In
fact, she excelled in athletics during
her entire school career.
“I developed a bulletproof mindset
and continued with sport all my life.
I believe this is when I developed a
warrior’s brain,” Zirkia admits. It was
exactly this mindset that would propel
her to greatness in the world of sports,
although it would take a unique and
unexpected turn.
“I used to love endurance races. Not
only was it something that challenged
me physically, but it also brought
a unique connection with nature
– a reminder that we are a part of
something much larger than ourselves.
12 Get It Magazine November 23

Running the Fish River Canyon and
Augrabies Falls had to be my most
challenging trials.”
Her journey into bodybuilding only
started when she reached the age of
55. Always one to embrace challenges
and seek personal growth, she was
drawn to the idea of sculpting her body
and pushing her physical limits.
For Zirkia though, the pursuit of
bodybuilding is more than just a means
of competition. It’s a way to challenge
herself continually and to prove that
age is no barrier to achieving her
dreams. So, if age isn’t a factor, what
does it take to become a bodybuilder?
‘‘Self-discipline,
patience, and
adherence to a strict
dietary regimen. The
path to becoming a
bodybuilder is not just
about lifting weights;
it’s about shaping one’s
body through
relentless commitment.’’
But, few things come close to the way
this now 61-year-old powerhouse feels
on stage! Prepping for a bodybuilding
competition involves rigorous training
in the gym, but nutrition plays an
equally critical role. Zirkia emphasises
the importance of lean proteins such
as fish, chicken and turkey breasts.
Green vegetables like asparagus and
broccoli are staples, and carbohydrates,
especially in the initial weeks of
preparation, provide the necessary
energy. It’s a delicate balance, and the
journey demands great dedication. It
comes as no surprise that she currently
holds the IBFF Ms Universe title.
Remarkable really is an understatement!
Not too long ago, Zirkia added
another achievement to her already
impressive journey – she opened her
own gym, GYM2GLOW. Inspired by her
own transformation and driven by a
desire to help others embark on their
fitness journeys, Zirkia’s gym is proof
of her commitment to motivating and
supporting her clients. What sets her
gym apart is her personal involvement
and dedication to the success of each
athlete who walks through her doors.
Apart from physical feats and
gym management, Zirkia is also a
professional valuer in the world of real
estate. For more than two decades, she
has excelled in this field, demonstrating
that her talents and passions extend
far beyond the world of sports. Her
varied interests are proof that age is
but a number and that the quality of
life is determined by one’s mindset and
lifestyle choices.
In fact, Zirkia firmly believes that age is
a reflection of how one feels, not just a
number on a birth certificate. The way
you deal with ageing is determined
by your perspective, as seen by her
endless energy and enthusiasm of
someone much younger.
When asked about her motivations
in life, she emphasises her belief in
being able.
“It’s a simple yet profound statement
that encapsulates my approach to
life – the belief in one’s ability to
overcome challenges, set goals, and
achieve them. It’s this unshakable
faith in God, and in myself that has
driven me all these years.”
The pursuit of beauty, according
to Zirkia, is not just skin-deep. To
her, beauty is synonymous with a
good heart and soul. It’s a belief that
transcends physical appearances
and underscores the importance of
inner qualities.
Despite her numerous
accomplishments, Zirkia still nurtures
dreams and aspirations. She envisions
becoming a best-selling author. But, the
dream of growth and self-improvement
remains her constant companion.
Zirkia shares the motto that has
guided her remarkable journey,
‘Great moments are born from great
opportunities’. Something that has
steered her through life’s challenges,
propelling her to the pinnacle of
bodybuilding, real estate, and beyond,
power of determination, resilience, and
a warrior’s spirit that never surrenders.
Zirkia’s fave protein bread recipe
You’ll need: 2 large eggs; 1 banana;
1 Tbsp cream cheese (room
temperature); 3 heaped Tbsp whey
protein isolate (unflavoured) powder;
½ tsp baking powder; 1 pinch salt; 1½
tbsp peanut butter; 1 tsp chia seeds.
To make: Mix all ingredients. Grease
a flat-bottomed small bowl with
butter. Microwave on mediumhigh
(approximately 700 watts) for
3 minutes.
Check if the bread is done in the
middle – if not, microwave for another
15-30 seconds.
Let cool for a minute and remove
from the bowl. Enjoy!
Why resistance bands?
• Resistant band exercises as a regular
fitness routine enhance muscular
strength and stability, also reducing
the risk of injuries.
• It’s a great at-home option for
building strength. But you must use
them correctly.
• They’re portable and easy to store.
So, they’re perfect for home use or
hotel workouts.
• Resistance bands can strengthen
your muscles the same or
more effectively than more
traditional weights.
• Research also shows that using
bands with weights improves
neuromuscular performance
and strength more than weight
training alone.
• Resistance bands are cost-effective
and the best alternative to traditional
fitness equipment and like free
weights, exercise bands come in a
range of resistance levels, from highly
stretchable to heavy-duty strength.
• Resistance bands are very
effective for both upper-body and
lower-body exercises.
Lights. Camera. Music.
Turn on your telly, because jack-of-all-trades Henck Conrey is back in the limelight.
And this time it’s his long-awaited single that’s catching his fans’ attention.
Actor. Producer. Director. Content creator. Artist. And entrepreneur. Henck Conrey was born
for the world of entertainment. Despite having graced our screens for the past 13 years, he
admits that music has always been his first love… and that he most probably learned to sing
before he could talk.
Although he enjoyed singing right through school, his parents insisted on his having a
proper qualification behind his name so he studied law and right after that, ventured into
the world of acting and presenting. It was only a few years later - seemingly by chance - that
he rediscovered his love for singing.
“In 2012 I was cast in an award-winning musical, Goggas, and met actor and singer
André Lotter. We instantly clicked and eventually started our own band, MAN.
A few years later we released our first single. And now we’re excited
to announce that we’ve released our second, Vuur en Vlamme
(Fire and Flames).
“It’s a sensual track that explores the theme of the temptation
you face when you’re attracted to someone you know isn’t right
for you. The song promises to take the listener on an exciting
journey through the complexity of love and desire.”
And, what better way to debut your own song than on your
own reality TV show? KykNETS’s Fiks of Niks viewers were in
for a real treat when they watched the first season’s second
episode, which also featured Henck as a contestant.
It comes as no surprise that he was nominated for best
presenter at the most recent kykNET Silwerskermfees for his
‘first born’ show, Vat jou goed en trek. The show essentially
introduced the flamboyant presenter to people all around
the country, and where he made his way from their
television screens into their hearts. Fast forward a few
years, and he’ll be celebrating the show’s 10th anniversary
with the release of a coffee table book next year.
How exciting!
Other than that, Henck is either in front of or behind the
cameras of Reno Race on SABC1 and Dr.Nou on VIA. As if
that’s not enough, he’s also a serious businessman and
entrepreneur. Talk about a full plate! But, luckily for Henck,
he’s always had an appetite for success!
“I would like to think that my passion shines through my work.
I don’t consider what I do as a job but rather as a calling. I have
never chased a paycheck or a sense of celebrity, but rather the
value that these projects can contribute to society as a whole,
as well as the contestants the shows serve.”
One thing’s for sure – there’s never a dull moment when
you’re tuned into one of Henck’s songs or shows. He gives
us a peek of what it’s like in the industry.
Your fave part about the industry?
Being able to use the industry to help people
in various ways. Whether it’s through aesthetic
medicine (Dr.Nou) or renovating houses like
on Reno Race and Vat jou goed en trek. And also
with my new show, Fiks of Niks, helping people
reach their personal health and fitness goals.
Something I am also very proud of is that I am
able to create opportunities within the South
African industry for not only actors but crew
members as well. I am blessed to be able to live
out my passion of making television while also
being of service to others. Talk about a win-win!
How do you decide which shows to produce?
I’ve always had a great affinity for anything
related to beauty. I strongly feel that happiness
is one of the purest forms of beauty whether it’s
creating a gorgeous space that leaves a family
feeling rejuvenated and as if they have a fresh
lease on life, or changing the way a contestant
sees themselves through aesthetic medicine.
So, one could say I pursue projects that not
only make me happy but bring joy to all those
participating. My mother has always been my
biggest supporter and my fairest critic. So, if my
mom likes it I know I’m on the right track, haha.
Your most embarrassing moment on set?
Well, on Season 3 of Vat jou goed en trek, I made
the mistake of picking up a contestant’s pet
tortoise and long story short it urinated on me
on national television.
What do you enjoy most about
making music?
Honestly, I feel that singing and making music
has always been a form of escapism for me.
The manner in which you can express yourself
in a way that words never could is something I
find addictive.
How do you spend your free time?
I don’t have the luxury of a lot of free time, but
when the moment presents itself, I love finding
a nook and reading anything from biographies
to self-help books. I recently finished The
Covenant of Water by Dr. Abraham Verghese
and I could not put it down! The works of Don
Micheal Ruize and Eckachk Tolle are also some
of my most inspiring authors.
Anything your fans can look forward to?
I can’t say too much about the most recent
project we have been working on, but there is a
new daily lifestyle program that I am extremely
excited for. It tackles topics and themes that lie
extremely close to my heart and that I am very
passionate about.
You’re life motto?
If plan A doesn’t work out, there are still
25 letters left in the alphabet to make
something work!
Must-use video editing tricks:
Choose a good video editing program. You need a tool that will
make editing fast and intuitive, even for beginners, but still give you
the results you want. Look for an easy-to-use editing tool designed
for marketers. The right option will have plenty of drag-and-drop
templates for different marketing needs.
Add subtitles. They make videos more accessible. Users don’t need
the sound effects to get your message, whether they’re browsing
on mute or they’re hearing-impaired. To really make things easier on
yourself, choose a video editing software with automatic subtitling.
Use motion graphics and motion transitions. Fun, moving video
effects are one of the best ways out there to add visual interest to
your video. Graphics make your video dynamic and keep viewers’
eyes on the screen. Effects, such as splicing together video clips in
engaging transitions, can stop things from getting boring, too.
Add music to enhance your message. It’s a powerful way to set the
mood and up your video’s storytelling power. It can heighten your
video’s emotional impact and create more of an experience for users.
Use high-quality stock media (if needed). Sometimes, you might
need to add extra pictures and videos to better illustrate what you’re
saying — especially if you’re explaining a complicated or abstract
concept. But make sure you choose high-quality stock media or you
risk bringing your whole video down.
Polish your outro and end with a CTA. If your intro is all about
grabbing the viewer’s attention, then the outro is about telling them
where to direct it next. If you’re not ending with a clear call to action,
you’ve missed a golden opportunity!
5 Tips for shooting a pro video
1Write a good script. If you expect people to listen, you need to
know what you’re going to say! Preparing a script will help you
deliver a clear message. Even for a short video. If you aren’t sure
what makes for a good script, try reading it out loud before you start
filming. Can you speak naturally, without stumbling over your words
or feeling awkward?
2Polish your intro. If there’s any part of your video that you
should spend time on, it’s the beginning. If you don’t grab
people’s attention immediately, they won’t keep watching. So
right away, tell them what they’ll get out of watching your video.
Make sure you’re promising value, especially if you can phrase it in a
hooky or intriguing way.
3Use good lighting. If your audience can’t see you clearly,
there’s no reason for them to keep watching. Good lighting
helps you highlight the key elements of your video and keep
users’ attention where you want it. Natural light can work perfectly
well if you can film at the right time of day in a room with as many
windows as possible. You can also invest in a studio lighting setup,
and there’s no need to spend a lot to get great results.
4Use a clean background. Along with good lighting, a
distraction-free background will help audiences focus on the
content of your video. So, get that clutter out of the way!
5Use a tripod. You need a tripod to make sure your image is
stable, and your subject isn’t shaking around in the frame.
Otherwise, your video will be confusing and annoying for
viewers to watch.
GOOD GUT HEALTH
Yoghurt and amasi – your go-to for gut health
Fermented dairy
Fermented foods are the rising stars on our grocery shelves – and yoghurt and amasi When it comes to fermented dairy
are South African favourites.
products, there are many options
Amasi is a proud part of our country’s food heritage and has substantial cultural to choose from: drinkable products
importance. Using Amasi is also a great way to boost the nutritional value of your or spoonable forms, and products
diet, and is convenient, easy to store and affordable. Having amasi and yoghurt
with different amounts of fat and
regularly also supports the recommendation of the South African food-based dietary protein. For example, you can
guidelines that encourages us to ‘have milk, maas and yoghurt every day’.
choose yoghurt with between
So, why the focus on fermented foods? Because they’re good for gut health!
0.5% and 6.3% fat, or have a plain or
flavoured dairy snack.
Opting for plain yoghurt and
adding fresh fruit is better than
having a sweetened product. In
this way, you limit your intake
of added sugar and at the same
time ensure that you up your fibre
intake and get lots of vitamins.
Yoghurt can be used as an easy
lunchbox filler for everyone in your
family. It helps to keep you going
between meals, can be used to
make a salad dressing or sauces, or
be the basis of a complete meal.
For breakfast, why not try yoghurt
blended with fresh fruit for an onthe-go
smoothie, or have a poached
apple and yoghurt sprinkled with
some cinnamon as a healthy dessert.
You can enjoy amasi as an anytime
favourite, either on its own as a drink
or in food. Keep it simple and pour
it over pap for a quick start to your
morning, stir it into soup or a sauce
for a creamy dinner treat, or use it as
a recovery drink after exercise.
Go to www.rediscoverdairy.co.za/
recipes/ for more ideas on how to
make yoghurt and amasi part of a
healthy, balanced diet.
What is fermentation and why
is it good for you?
Fermented foods are made by
adding beneficial microbes (friendly
bacteria), such as lactic acid bacteria
and certain moulds and yeasts, to
food during processing. It changes
a food or beverage in unique and
beneficial ways.
There are about 140 trillion bacteria in
your gut, which help to digest food,
produce vitamins, protect you against
disease-causing microorganisms
and help support your immune
system. In addition to the health
benefits of fermentation, the process
also prolongs the shelf life of a food
product through preservation, which is
an important factor in food safety.
Fermented foods for a healthy gut
The best known benefit of having
fermented foods is probably their positive
effect on gut health if consumed daily. A
poor diet, stress and taking medication
like antibiotics or having anaesthesia
can substantially affect the diversity of
bacteria that make up the collection of
microbes in your gut. Because fermented
foods contain healthy bacteria, they
are a source of live and active cultures.
Making these foods part of your diet
regularly can help to restore the
balance in the gut. Moreover,
studies have shown that
having fermented foods
and beverages often can
increase the number of
microbes in your gut
10 000 times.
Jamie and the Med!
Minimum fuss. Maximum flavours. Jamie Oliver’s latest cookbook
will have you whipping up a Med feast, every night of the week.
He shared three recipes with us ... a (delish) taste of what’s in the book!
Jamie’s most popular cookbook goes Mediterranean in this
mouth-watering follow-up. 5 Ingredients Mediterranean is
everything people loved about the first book, but with the
added va-va-voom of basing it on Jamie’s lifelong travels around
the Med. It will, he hopes, give you a real sense of the countries,
cities and islands that he’s been to throughout his travels over
the past 25 years. More than 125 utterly delicious, easy-to-follow
recipes, this book is all about making everyday cooking superexciting,
with minimal fuss. A little more than half the recipes
are meat free or meat-reduced, all are big and bold on flavour.
Soups and salads and sarnies, pies and parcels, seafood and fish
and chicken and meat, as well as lovely sweet things ... they’re all
achievable by even the most timid of cooks, and are, says Jamie,
a celebration of hero Mediterranean ingredients, flavours and
combinations. Penguin, R540
Easy fig tart
Fruit & nut base, vanilla yoghurt & honey
Take the fuss out of creating a showstopping
dessert with this super-quick
no-cook fig tart – a delicate base of
crushed fruit and nuts, topped with
yoghurt, figs and a drizzle of honey.
Serves 8 • Total time 10 minutes, plus chilling
300g luxury fruit and nut mix, 500g Greek
yoghurt, 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste,
1 teaspoon runny honey, plus extra to
serve, 4 perfectly ripe figs
Line a 20cm springform cake tin with
grease-proof paper. Tip the fruit and nuts
into a food processor and blitz until fine
and tacky (it should be easy to mould
with your hands), then push and press
it into the base of the lined tin, and
2.5cm up the sides. Leave to firm up in
the freezer for 1 hour. When the time’s
up, mix the yoghurt with the vanilla and
1 teaspoon of honey, then spoon into
the chilled tart case. Freeze for 1 further
hour, or until slightly set. Release the tart
from the tin, halve or quarter the figs
and arrange nicely on top, then drizzle
generously with honey, to finish.
Feta filo turnovers
Fresh marjoram, runny honey &
pistachio sprinkle
“When I was a teenager visiting Cyprus
on holiday, I was wowed by the recipes
that would cook feta rather than just
serve it in salads raw. For me, this is
so incredibly simple, satisfying and
impressive.”
Serves 4 • Total time 20 minutes
4 sheets of filo pastry, 200g feta cheese,
half a bunch of marjoram (10g), 25g
shelled unsalted pistachios, runny
honey, to serve
Lay a sheet of filo on a damp tea towel
and brush lightly with olive oil. Crumble
a quarter of the feta across one side of
the pastry, leaving a 3cm gap around
the edges, and pick over a quarter of
the marjoram leaves. Carefully fold over
the filo, press the edges to seal, then
fold in half again, pressing down gently
to secure. Brush lightly with olive oil.
Place a large non-stick frying pan on
a medium heat with a splash of olive
oil, add the filo parcel and cook for 2
minutes on each side, or until golden
and crisp, then transfer to a serving
plate. Meanwhile, bash or roughly chop
the pistachios. Drizzle the parcel with
honey and scatter over a quarter of
the pistachios. Repeat with the rest of
the ingredients, serving each parcel as
soon as it’s ready.
Big, bold
flavours
Garlic chicken
Creamy chickpeas, spinach & sumac
Inspired by some of the wonderful flavours of
Lebanon, this quick dish is perfect for an easy
meal. Hunting out nice fat jarred chickpeas is
game-changing when it comes to both flavour
and texture.
Serves 2 • Total time 18 minutes
4 cloves of garlic, 2 x 150g skinless chicken
breasts, half a 700g jar of chickpeas, 250g baby
spinach, 1 heaped teaspoon sumac
Peel the garlic cloves and slice lengthways,
then place in a large non-stick frying pan on
a high heat with 1 tablespoon of olive oil,
stirring regularly. Slice each chicken breast
lengthways into 3 strips, then toss with a pinch
of sea salt and black pepper. Once the garlic
is nicely golden, quickly remove from the pan
with a slotted spoon, leaving the flavoured oil
behind. Go in with the chicken and cook for 5
minutes, or until golden and cooked through,
turning regularly.
Remove the chicken from the pan and tip in
the chickpeas (juices and all). Add the spinach,
along with most of the garlic and 1 tablespoon
of red wine vinegar, then toss over the heat
until the spinach has wilted and the chickpeas
are hot through. Season to perfection with salt
and pepper, then return the chicken to the
pan and finish with the reserved garlic and a
generous dusting of sumac.
The emphasis is on ecotourism, an
explorer-style experience where the
early morning bush walks are the
highlight. Yes, you may well walk
with cheetah (Samara is well known
for its hugely successful cheetah
conservation programme started in
2004.). But it’s also a time to explore
the smaller things so often missed
on a drive ... tracks and birds’ nests
and ostrich eggs and flowering Karoo
bossies. Maybe a snake or two.
Evening game drives see guides
venture further away, often up the
mountains (a hair-raising ride for those
nervous of heights!) to the plateau
on top where the game is abundant
... mountain zebra, always, and often
lion. G&Ts and Amarula and cold
beers always taste better in the wild
and with a view ... after sundowners,
the drive winds its way back to camp.
Along the way, fairly large crashes
of rhino (dehorned for their safety),
buffalo, and a small herd of elephant
... rounding off the Big Five there are
signs of leopard, but sightings are rare.
The experience continues back at
the camp. In the mess tent - a soft,
worn khaki leather sofa, well-thumbed
books, binocs for game spotting -
guests are treated to simple but tasty

meals ... if the weather plays fair, around the fire under the
Jacketplum tree, otherwise in the tent next to the fireplace.
There’s a small farm-style plunge pool for really welcome dips
during the heat of the day, a bar cart for equally welcome
drinks anytime.
The guests’ tents are made to resemble the semi-permanent
mobile camps set up during safaris years ago - and they’re
not short on luxury. In shades of khaki, pumpkin and oatmeal,
with twin, incredibly comfy, beds, the team have thought of
everything ... from warm robes and slippers to flasks of boiling
water so you can sip coffee or tea on the deck. There’s no
electricity, but solar lamps provide all the light you need, and
there’s an indoor loo and basin with constantly-refilled jugs
of water, and an outside open-air bucket shower, filled with
hot water on request. Always keeping sustainability and being
eco-conscious top of mind, a set of biodegradable toiletries is
provided. Each tent also has a small fireplace - madly welcome
for winter stays.
With a maximum of eight guests, and a small but efficient
on-site team, this off-grid experience really does allow you
to completely relax, unwind, reconnect with nature and
remember what’s really important in life.
There’s a launch special for South African residents - pay
for two nights, stay for three - until December 15, with
rates from R4 750 per person sharing per night, inclusive
of accommodation, game drives, bush walks and all meals.
Conservation Contribution and drinks are not included. No
children younger than 16.
