NF01 November/December 2023

Issue one of nearfield celebrates new beginnings across the region. We get excited about the reopening of Bristol Beacon, meet the hardy dippers revelling in the cold waters of the restored Cleveland Pools, find out what the Bristol Old Vic's new artistic director has planned; and explore the vintage shops, upcycling workshops, and reclamation yards breathing fresh life into old. We also keep readers moving through winter with a guide to indoor and outdoor activities, and meet the Icebreakers in our first community takeover. Plus we round up all the best events, experiences, and food and drink in the southwest this winter.

70 Your Field
FIELD TRIP
FRIARY
WOOD
CIRCULAR
The founder of
Bath 5k Map, Annie
Legge, leads us on
a festive schlep
from the Inn at
Freshford, via Iford
Manor and back
again, to blow
away the cobwebs
1
Starting with your back to the
Inn at Freshford – pre-walk
snifter optional – take a right
through the gate to the top of
the woods, taking the first left
and trekking down towards
the banks of the River Frome.
2
Pass through a gate on to
Rosemary Lane, swing right
and take the first lane on your
left. After passing Dunkirk Mill
Cottage on your right, veer
left along the lower edges of
Friary Wood, continuing to the
hamlet. Re-up on local eggs
and honey.
3
Head through Friary Wood
until you come to a large field
next to the riverbank – a great
place to let dogs burn off
any festive frustrations.
4
Turn left at the gate for a view
of the Georgian-style Iford
Manor, and cross Iford Bridge.
Stop at Iford Manor Cafe &
Kitchen for sourdough bread,
tea, cake or cider. Check their
website for seasonal hours.
