NF01 November/December 2023

Issue one of nearfield celebrates new beginnings across the region. We get excited about the reopening of Bristol Beacon, meet the hardy dippers revelling in the cold waters of the restored Cleveland Pools, find out what the Bristol Old Vic's new artistic director has planned; and explore the vintage shops, upcycling workshops, and reclamation yards breathing fresh life into old. We also keep readers moving through winter with a guide to indoor and outdoor activities, and meet the Icebreakers in our first community takeover. Plus we round up all the best events, experiences, and food and drink in the southwest this winter.

hometown, Stroud
Sean describes Klang Tone as
Stroud’s underground record
shop. With a penchant for weird
sounds and outsider musicians,
the shop stocks a wild array of
records alongside his partner
Ritsuko Hidaka’s selection of
mid-century ceramics, textiles
and art. They recently moved
into a new space in their
spiritual home of Lansdown.
“It’s the street I live on, so it’s
a bit like coming home. It also
has some of the best buildings
in Stroud. It has a ‘downtown’
vibe to it.”
Here are a few of Sean’s favourite places
RO Frames
“They always show
incredible attention to detail,
despite the huge amount of
work they take on. Though
their space is small and
compact, they make room for
a mini exhibition.”
Humphries & Begg
“Our near neighbours.
Their clothes have a unique
handcrafted feel; loose and
comfortable, with vibrant
designs screen-printed onto
100% natural fabrics by
a small team in Jaipur, India.”
Lansdown Hall
& Gallery
“This gallery is funded by
artists who book the space
for a week at a time to exhibit.
They also host live events,
screenings and workshops
for adults and children.”
Strangeness
& Charm
“A vintage clothing (and more)
shop on Gloucester Road
run by our friend, Rebecca.
We often bump into her at
antique fairs and flea markets
at 6am in the morning when
we’re out looking for records.”
Sew & So
“I’m always amazed by
how early they open! They
were really nice when we
needed to get material for
our old shop. It’s a great
place to look for textiles,
with so many styles and
patterns for sale.”
