Dr Nikita Blake: 

Beauty, balance, and beyond

Dr Nikita’s passion for surgery and the human body 

was ignited early in her medical studies. “Learning 

and mastering new skills is extremely satisfying to 

me,” she says. 

Her journey into plastic surgery was driven by her desire 

to make a lasting difference in patients’ lives. “Working as a 

plastic surgeon, I very rarely save lives anymore, but I save 

quality of life, and that is arguably more important,” she states. 

In the world of plastic surgery, the perception often leans 

toward aesthetics. Dr. Nikita, however, explains that the two 

aspects, beauty and medical solutions, are not mutually 

exclusive. “During reconstructive surgery, my priorities are 

always function, then form, then aesthetics; in that order,” she 

explains. She uses breast reduction surgery as an example, 

illustrating how the process involves ensuring functionality 

and symmetry while leading to a beautiful aesthetic result. 

While many may associate plastic surgery solely with 

aesthetic enhancements, it encompasses a vast array of 

medical and reconstructive aspects. Dr Nikita notes that 

the new generation of plastic surgeons are also involved 

in microsurgery, where advanced techniques are used to 

transplant tissues, all with the aim of improving patients’ 

overall well-being beyond cosmetic enhancements. 

Dr. Nikita’s fascination with the human body developed early 

in her life. “I knew I wanted to study medicine, but my love 

for surgery developed later,” she shares. She emphasises the 

importance of purposefully exploring the areas of medicine 

that genuinely interest you, reiterating that one must fall in 

love with the work rather than the idea of being a plastic 

surgeon. 

Balancing a demanding career with family life is a universal 

challenge. Dr. Nikita, a working mother, acknowledges the 

struggle but strives for balance. “Balance is a dynamic concept 

and is something to work toward rather than something 

you achieve,” she says. Prioritising and managing time are 

key elements, but sometimes, emergencies can disrupt the 

equilibrium – something that she accepts graciously. 

Dr Nikita shares some memorable patient stories that 

showcase the profound impact of plastic and reconstructive 

surgery. 

She has been involved with the Universitas Smile programme 

for seven years, where she personally knows cleft lip and 

palate children and their families. “The look on the mother’s 

face when her baby comes back from surgery with a repaired 

lip is indescribably beautiful to me. Watching these kids 

develop normally in terms of speech and feeding is also very 

special,” she expresses. 

“Another aspect of reconstructive surgery I am passionate 

about is limb salvage and over the years our department has 

saved many patients from amputation. These patients are in 

hospital for long periods so you become quite close to them 

and witnessing them walk after their reconstructive and 

rehabilitation journey is extremely fulfilling,” she adds. 

In addition to her surgical expertise, Dr Nikita actively 

commits to research and education. She keeps up with the 

latest advancements in her field by attending conferences, 

workshops, and seminars, as well as through research 

collaborations with colleagues. Dr Nikita believes that when 

you strive to practice cutting-edge medicine daily, staying up 

to date comes naturally. 

Every day in her life is a unique blend of clinics and surgeries, 

as she balances her roles at Universitas Academic Hospital, 

in the public health sector, and at Mediclinic Bloemfontein, 

where she runs a private practice. 

“My days vary between clinics and surgeries and have the 

potential to be very orderly and scheduled or complete 

chaos,” she says. 

As a mother of twins, she cherishes the early mornings she 

spends with them, relishing those precious moments. 

Her life outside work is a testament to her vitality. She 

enjoys being active and spending time outdoors, with her 

extroverted nature thriving on interactions with friends and 

family. 

Dr Nikita says she truly loves her job, and she describes being 

in her “happy place” when operating.

Everything 

Often our greatest disappointments become our greatest gifts and advantages in life. There 

is nothing mundane in this life. Nothing. Everything matters. Everything. Normality is a huge 

privilege. What you complain about, some people are praying for today.

These are the words of Shinel Schoeman, who 

finds beauty everywhere. This is a concept 

that most people miss but if you find 

enough time to stop and appreciate what is 

around you … you might just find that there 

is more to everything than what meets the 

eye. 

Nestled in a fairly quiet part of the ever-bustling friendly city, 

is a home turned shop that welcomes patrons with a burst of 

colour. The tranquil splendour that the vintage set-up boasts, 

is brought to life by the owner, Shinel, who finds beauty in 

everything. Literally! We asked what beauty is and her answer 

encapsulates exactly who Shinel is. 

“Beauty is … When you accept yourself so much that you 

don’t have to fit in with anybody. You belong wherever you 

are. The soft whispers inside are louder than the shouting 

from outside,” she said. Shinel has always had an appreciation 

for dressing up and thus she started a business that helps 

her live out her passion for the finer things in life. 

“Since I was a very small child I was dressed up and my 

mom used to put make up on for me – it was a huge treat. 

I would have my hair curled and I’d wear beads and always 

play in the jewellery box – it felt like heaven. I loved living in 

my pretend world of fantasy. It was a wonderful place. Even 

today – every day is a get-up, dress-up, makeup, show-up 

and chin-up day,” That little girl never imagined that she 

would be the proud owner of Hallo Dolly, a local “huiswinkel” 

located in Dan Pienaar. “Hallo Dolly was born – absolutely by 

accident. I never wanted to have a business and I definitely 

never wanted to be in a position of managing people. I 

fought against it because I knew I would be unhappy. I was 

quite happy to work for a boss forever more. I wanted to. 

So, Hallo Dolly happened quite by accident. I had no idea 

what I was doing, I just did it ... Basically a house I converted 

into a shop – one room with décor, one room with fashion 

accessories and jewellery, and another two rooms with 

make-up and bath and body products.” 

Inspired by heartbreak, she left Bloemfontein in 2016 to 

start over on the adventure of a lifetime in Swellendam, the 

Bloemfonteiner at heart moved back to the City of Roses in 

2021. The journey is different for everyone. One can travel 

the world in search of something, only to return home to 

find it where you started... and like they say, home is where 

the heart is. 


“Bloemfontein accepted and welcomed me with open arms. 

The ladies here have been incredibly good to me and kind 

and nice! I feel like the luckiest person in the world,” she said. 

“My value had always been what I could contribute. It feels 

important to me that you can feel good about yourself – 

regardless of looks, income, education, or anything else. We 

all want to be accepted. By others and by ourselves. And 

what a privilege for me to help ladies find and embrace 

their alter egos. To help them be more comfortable and 

accepting of themselves. When ladies visit my shop, I leave 

them to find their own way, but often we end up choosing 

things together and really just play.” 

She encourages women to live their lives by their own rules 

and of course, to remember that acceptance is key. 

“It’s your space and your body and your face. Do what you 

like! When you accept yourself, everybody else also does, 

ironically. Often I’m asked what I do – based on the colourful, 

crazy and mismatched outfits I like to wear. And often they 

are bizarre. But they work.” 

The journey is not always the same for everyone, it can go 

from leaving your home town to living in Swellendam, and 

eventually coming back home, but the lessons always make 

it worth the while. 

“Being on my own journey and allowing you to be on your 

own journey. My lessons are for me to learn. 

Your lessons are yours to learn. I believe in letting people 

bang their own heads. It’s not my place to fix you or learn 

from your mistakes or for you to learn from mine. 

We are here to live our lives. You get to choose each day 

what your life is going to be today. So choose well,” she 

advised.

Death by Chocolate 

cupcake with a sprinkle of gold dust 

Feed your craving with elegance and style with this easy to prepare recipe from 

CG Cakes, a home-based bakery situated in Bloemfontein.

This Death by Chocolate 

cupcake recipe makes use 

of two special ingredients 

that change the chocolate 

game - alkalised cocoa 

powder and mayonnaise. 


Let’s bake 24 Death by Chocolate cupcakes 

Dry ingredients: 

180g cake flour 

266g castor sugar 

80g alkalised cocoa powder 

1 tsp baking soda 

1/2 tsp fine sea salt 

1 tsp Espresso powder 

Wet ingredients: 

90g mayonnaise 

60g Greek yoghurt 

140ml buttermilk 

80ml Canola oil 

2 large eggs 

1 tsp vanilla essence 

Chocolate buttercream: 

260g unsalted butter 

450g icing sugar 

100g alkalised cocoa powder 

1 tsp Espresso powder 

1 tsp vanilla essence 

2 Tbsp fresh cream 

Tips for handling gold dust: 

Make sure that there are no fans or aircon switched on 

nearby, as any sort of wind will blow some of that dust 

away. This is an important precaution, as whether that 

dust blows on your clean counter top or in your toddler’s 

eye, cleaning up the aftermath of blown luster dust is 

never a fun task. 

To apply the dust, simply use a paintbrush (one that has 

never been used to paint before!) and dip the brush 

into the container. Gently swipe some dust onto fruit or 

decorations of your choice. 

Alternatively, place all of your decor into a bowl (fruit, 

flowers etc.) and sprinkle some dust into the bowl with 

the items. Then simply toss the items with the dust until 

they are all evenly coated to your liking. 

Directions: 

For your chocolate cupcakes: 

1. Preheat the oven to 160 degrees Celsius and prepare 

your muffin pans with cupcake liners. 

2. Sift the flour, castor sugar, cocoa powder and baking 

soda together. 

3. Add the sea salt and then give the dry ingredients 

a good whisk to make sure everything is evenly 

distributed. 

4. Combine the espresso powder with half a cup of boiling 

water. 

5. Add the cold mayonnaise, Greek yoghurt and buttermilk 

to the hot espresso, in that specific order. Whisk together 

until smooth. 

6. Add the remaining eggs, oil and vanilla essence to the 

Espresso mixture. Whisk together until all the ingredients 

are incorporated. 

7. Whilst slowly whisking, add the wet batter to the dry 

ingrdients. Take care not to overmix. 

8. Once the batter is smooth, fill the cupcake liners to 

about 3/4 of the way. Take care not to overfill the liners. 

9. Bake cupcakes for 18 - 24 minutes. Your baking time may 

vary according to your oven. From 18 minutes, check the 

cupcakes every 2 minutes until an inserted toothpick 

only shows a few crumbs. 

10. Allow your cupcakes to cool on a cooling rack for at least 

45 minutes before any decoration is attempted. 

For your chocolate buttercream: 

1. In a standing mixer, or with a hand mixer, beat the butter 

until fluffy and light in colour. 

2. Sift the icing sugar, cocoa powder and espresso powder 

into the butter and whisk until incorporated. 

3. Add the vanilla essence and fresh cream into the butter 

mixture, and whisk until buttercream is smooth and 

fluffy. 

4. If the buttercream is too thick to pipe, simply add 

some more fresh cream until the buttercream is at a 

consistency with which you can pipe with. 

To decorate, simply brush some fresh fruit with gold luster 

dust and place onto cupcakes that have some piped 

buttercream on them. 

These Death by Chocolate cupcakes will stay fresh for up to 3 

days, if kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Easy fig tart 

Fruit & nut base, vanilla yoghurt & honey 

Take the fuss out of creating a showstopping 

dessert with this super-quick 

no-cook fig tart – a delicate base of 

crushed fruit and nuts, topped with 

yoghurt, figs and a drizzle of honey. 

Serves 8 • Total time 10 minutes, plus chilling 

300g luxury fruit and nut mix, 500g Greek 

yoghurt, 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste, 

1 teaspoon runny honey, plus extra to 

serve, 4 perfectly ripe figs 

Line a 20cm springform cake tin with 

grease-proof paper. Tip the fruit and nuts 

into a food processor and blitz until fine 

and tacky (it should be easy to mould 

with your hands), then push and press 

it into the base of the lined tin, and 

2.5cm up the sides. Leave to firm up in 

the freezer for 1 hour. When the time’s 

up, mix the yoghurt with the vanilla and 

1 teaspoon of honey, then spoon into 

the chilled tart case. Freeze for 1 further 

hour, or until slightly set. Release the tart 

from the tin, halve or quarter the figs 

and arrange nicely on top, then drizzle 

generously with honey, to finish. 


Feta filo turnovers 

Fresh marjoram, runny honey & 

pistachio sprinkle 

“When I was a teenager visiting Cyprus 

on holiday, I was wowed by the recipes 

that would cook feta rather than just 

serve it in salads raw. For me, this is 

so incredibly simple, satisfying and 

impressive.” 

Serves 4 • Total time 20 minutes 

4 sheets of filo pastry, 200g feta cheese, 

half a bunch of marjoram (10g), 25g 

shelled unsalted pistachios, runny 

honey, to serve 

Lay a sheet of filo on a damp tea towel 

and brush lightly with olive oil. Crumble 

a quarter of the feta across one side of 

the pastry, leaving a 3cm gap around 

the edges, and pick over a quarter of 

the marjoram leaves. Carefully fold over 

the filo, press the edges to seal, then 

fold in half again, pressing down gently 

to secure. Brush lightly with olive oil. 

Place a large non-stick frying pan on 

a medium heat with a splash of olive 

oil, add the filo parcel and cook for 2 

minutes on each side, or until golden 

and crisp, then transfer to a serving 

plate. Meanwhile, bash or roughly chop 

the pistachios. Drizzle the parcel with 

honey and scatter over a quarter of 

the pistachios. Repeat with the rest of 

the ingredients, serving each parcel as 

soon as it’s ready. 

Big, bold 

flavours 

Garlic chicken 

Creamy chickpeas, spinach & sumac 

Inspired by some of the wonderful flavours of 

Lebanon, this quick dish is perfect for an easy 

meal. Hunting out nice fat jarred chickpeas is 

game-changing when it comes to both flavour 

and texture. 

Serves 2 • Total time 18 minutes 

4 cloves of garlic, 2 x 150g skinless chicken 

breasts, half a 700g jar of chickpeas, 250g baby 

spinach, 1 heaped teaspoon sumac 

Peel the garlic cloves and slice lengthways, 

then place in a large non-stick frying pan on 

a high heat with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 

stirring regularly. Slice each chicken breast 

lengthways into 3 strips, then toss with a pinch 

of sea salt and black pepper. Once the garlic 

is nicely golden, quickly remove from the pan 

with a slotted spoon, leaving the flavoured oil 

behind. Go in with the chicken and cook for 5 

minutes, or until golden and cooked through, 

turning regularly. 

Remove the chicken from the pan and tip in 

the chickpeas (juices and all). Add the spinach, 

along with most of the garlic and 1 tablespoon 

of red wine vinegar, then toss over the heat 

until the spinach has wilted and the chickpeas 

are hot through. Season to perfection with salt 

and pepper, then return the chicken to the 

pan and finish with the reserved garlic and a 

generous dusting of sumac.

Plant with purpose 

Maximise your garden with multi-purpose plants and take care of unwanted pests

Mexican Mint Marigold (Tagetes lucida) is a new arrival 

on the herb scene. Its other name is Mexican tarragon. 

The strongly flavoured leaves are sweeter than French 

tarragon and have a liquorice/anise fragrance. This hardy 

perennial herb is also more heat and drought tolerant than 

traditional tarragon. 

It is compact and bushy, 30 to 60cm high and thrives in 

full sun in ordinary garden soil. Grow from seed and water 

young plants regularly until they are established. Thereafter 

water deeply once a week in summer to ensure plenty of 

lush, edible leaves. Harvest the individual leaves or sprigs. It 

flowers from summer through to the beginning of winter. 

The plant forms a clump that can be divided after two to 

three years. 

Chop and add the fresh leaves to sauces, salads, soups and 

chicken dishes. Make a tarragon pesto for spicy Mexican 

dishes and pasta. The leaves can be dried but don’t have 

quite the same intense flavour. Add the flowers to salads 

or use as a garnish. Seeds are available from Kirchhoffs.

We’re planting… Petunia ‘Cherry Sky’ for its festive, cherryred 

blooms, flecked with white, and because it’s a hardy 

petunia that thrives in the heat. This semi-trailing novelty 

petunia is the newest member of the Instagrammable 

SKY family and produces mounds of colourful blooms 

for containers, hanging baskets and in the garden. Mix it 

with the original indigo-blue Night Sky petunias for a real 

colour splash. Plant in full sun, or in a position that receives 

morning sun and afternoon shade, especially for container 

plants. Don’t overwater and feed once a month with liquid 

plant feed or fertilizer to keep up the flower power. Details:

Garden tasks for November 

• There is still time to sow a second crop of quick growing 

annuals like alyssum, dwarf marigolds, nasturtiums, 

portulaca, and California poppy. 

• Perennials such as yarrow, hollyhocks, blue marguerite, 

Michaelmas daisy, Oriental poppy, Penstemon, and scabious 

can be sown from seed too. 

• Feed hydrangeas once a month and water more often if it 

gets very hot. Renew mulch around shrubs, roses, and any 

area where the soil is exposed. 

• November is the peak time for pests. Use an organic 

insecticide like Ludwig’s Insect Spray as soon as you notice 

insect infestation. Spray once a week until the pests are 

gone. 

• Succession sowing of most vegetables can be continued 

up until the end of this month. 

• To prevent fungus diseases in the lawn, do not water 

during the hottest time of the day. Rather water early in the 

morning or late afternoon.

Dr. Martlie’s commitment to advancing pharmaceutical 

practices extends beyond her professional roles. As the 

Chairperson of the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa, 

Free State Branch, she has been instrumental in fostering 

collaboration among professionals and enhancing the 

standards of pharmaceutical care. 

She serves as an esteemed executive committee member 

of the Pharmaceutical Society of South-Africa, where she 

contributes her knowledge and insights to guide policy 

decisions that have far-reaching implications for healthcare in 

the country. Her leadership has been a driving force behind 

the society's success. 

Her influence extends to the international stage as well. She 

has delivered several national and international presentations, 

sharing her expertise and contributing to the global discourse 

on clinical pharmacology and healthcare practices. Her 

presentations have garnered acclaim and recognition, solidifying 

her status as a respected thought leader. 

As a testament to her dedication to advancing healthcare, 

Dr Martlie serves as the pharmacists’ representative on the 

Ministerial Advisory Committee for Antimicrobial Stewardship. 

In this capacity, she plays a vital role in formulating strategies 

to combat antimicrobial resistance, a critical global health 

challenge. 

In 2021, Dr Martlie had the distinct honour 

of representing South Africa at the World 

Commonwealth Civil Society Policy Forum. Her 

presence on this global platform showcased South

Off-the-grid safari 

A grounding, explorer-style experience in the Karoo ... 

Samara’s eco-conscious Plains Camp is all about reconnecting with nature, 

with the focus on the ultimate luxuries ... time and space. 

There’s no Wi-Fi. No electricity. No 

high-tech distractions. What there is, 

is time. And space. And solitude. And 

a whole load of unpretentious, oldschool 

safari luxury. 

Four tents, with a fifth serving as a 

communal mess tent, hug a low hill 

in a remote part of the Samara Karoo 

Reserve, with views over the plains 

towards the impressive mountain 

range. Plains where springbok 

and gemsbok, zebra and giraffe, 

wildebeest and ostrich meander 

and graze. 

The emphasis is on ecotourism, an 

explorer-style experience where the 

early morning bush walks are the 

highlight. Yes, you may well walk 

with cheetah (Samara is well known 

for its hugely successful cheetah 

conservation programme started in 

2004.). But it’s also a time to explore 

the smaller things so often missed 

on a drive ... tracks and birds’ nests 

and ostrich eggs and flowering Karoo 

bossies. Maybe a snake or two. 

Evening game drives see guides 

venture further away, often up the 

mountains (a hair-raising ride for those 

nervous of heights!) to the plateau 

on top where the game is abundant 

... mountain zebra, always, and often 

lion. G&Ts and Amarula and cold 

beers always taste better in the wild 

and with a view ... after sundowners, 

the drive winds its way back to camp. 

Along the way, fairly large crashes 

of rhino (dehorned for their safety), 

buffalo, and a small herd of elephant 

... rounding off the Big Five there are 

signs of leopard, but sightings are rare. 

The experience continues back at 

the camp. In the mess tent - a soft, 

worn khaki leather sofa, well-thumbed 

books, binocs for game spotting - 

guests are treated to simple but tasty 


meals ... if the weather plays fair, around the fire under the 

Jacketplum tree, otherwise in the tent next to the fireplace. 

There’s a small farm-style plunge pool for really welcome dips 

during the heat of the day, a bar cart for equally welcome 

drinks anytime. 

The guests’ tents are made to resemble the semi-permanent 

mobile camps set up during safaris years ago - and they’re 

not short on luxury. In shades of khaki, pumpkin and oatmeal, 

with twin, incredibly comfy, beds, the team have thought of 

everything ... from warm robes and slippers to flasks of boiling 

water so you can sip coffee or tea on the deck. There’s no 

electricity, but solar lamps provide all the light you need, and 

there’s an indoor loo and basin with constantly-refilled jugs 

of water, and an outside open-air bucket shower, filled with 

hot water on request. Always keeping sustainability and being 

eco-conscious top of mind, a set of biodegradable toiletries is 

provided. Each tent also has a small fireplace - madly welcome 

for winter stays. 

With a maximum of eight guests, and a small but efficient 

on-site team, this off-grid experience really does allow you 

to completely relax, unwind, reconnect with nature and 

remember what’s really important in life. 

There’s a launch special for South African residents - pay 

for two nights, stay for three - until December 15, with 

rates from R4 750 per person sharing per night, inclusive 

of accommodation, game drives, bush walks and all meals. 

Conservation Contribution and drinks are not included. No
