sectors that contribute to the economy of Peterborough,
the Kawarthas and the surrounding areas. In this issue
we are celebrating the many local companies, especially
family businesses, who are thriving in the region.
The Kawartha Family Business Group is in its 17th year
as a networking organization that helps family businesses
learn from each other and guest speakers at their meetings
where they help family businesses connect, support, and
inspire each other. This season, members will hear about
how artificial intelligence is transforming the workplace,
how to make sales in today’s economy, how to approach
succession planning, as well as other relevant topics.
Richard Kloosterman and his sons John and Dan continue
to operate their successful family company Kloosterman
General Contractors that was started by Richard’s father
over 40 years ago. John and Dan are the third generation
to be involved in the business. Their iconic buildings can be
seen around Peterborough and the surrounding area and
include Mastermind Toys, Firehouse Subs, Trans Canada
Nissan and the new Kingdon Timber Mart in Lakefield.
The company specializes in commercial, industrial and
residential construction. Read more about them in the
Harco Enterprises has been family-owned and operated
since 1964. They are looking to the future with their
new 16,000 sq. ft. facility on the Parkway where they
manufacture a range of custom injection-moulded
products from utensils and small tools for the food
and service industry, to industrial components, parts,
and household items. With their four generations of
family involvement, skilled employees, and continuous
investments and improvements, the company continues
Artificial Intelligence, Succession Planning and
More at the Kawartha Family Business Group
By Joanne Culley
LEFT: Panelists from the January 2023 KFBG Event “Protecting Your Family Business Against Fraud”
RIGHT: KFBG Executive Directors Jhane Brasier and Michelle O’Neill
Family businesses large and small across the
region continue to contribute significantly to
the local economy. For 17 years, the Kawartha
Family Business Group has been bringing family
businesses together to help them connect, support, inspire
and learn from each other.
Co-executive Directors of the Kawartha Family Business
Group (KFBG) Jhane Brasier and Michelle O’Neill are
excited about the 2023-24 season.
Their first meeting of the year took place on September 25
and was held at Elmhirst’s Resort on Rice Lake. The topic
was “Contingency Planning – The Best Laid Plans”, about
contingency planning in the event of a tragic loss in the
family or a business loss, such as what many businesses
experienced during the pandemic.
“We heard from a few of our family businesses on how
they navigated the unexpected loss of family members and
collapse of their industry during the pandemic, and how
they recovered from those sudden changes,” says Jhane
Brasier. “We also discussed the processes and products
we have available to ensure that your family business is
protected from the unexpected.”
The panel consisted of a cross-section of members
including Greg Elmhirst of Elmhirst’s Resort, Scott
Stewart of Blowes & Stewart and Stewart Aviation, and
Terry Crowe of Kawartha Dairy.
KFBG meetings generally take place five times a year on
Mondays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., held at the Best
Western Plus Otonabee Inn, 84 Lansdowne St. E., with
the exception of the first and last meetings.
Their next meeting will be on November 13 where guest
speaker Paul Attia’s topic will be “Learning to Run the
China Shop with the Bull Still in It.”
“Paul is an entertaining speaker who will tell his personal
story of how he went from being a Bay Street Litigator
in Toronto and then a Criminal Prosecutor in Ottawa to
leaving the courtroom behind to help run his own family’s
business, when it needed extra support,” says Michelle
O’Neill. “His unique perspective as a second-generation
immigrant family member, along with practical tools, will
help you identify, manage, and ultimately, optimize family
business dynamics as they relate to communication and
decision making. He is now an advisor to other family
businesses.”
KFBG meetings usually open with a Family Business
Spotlight where a member talks about their business
and the successes and challenges they’re facing, which
sparks discussion and support among other members.
Meetings in the new year begin on January 29 with
guest speaker Shawn Casemore whose topic is “Close
More Business in a Down Economy.” He will discuss
what’s changed about selling in today’s economy and will
share the tools and methods that high performing sales
professionals use to keep sales revenue up.
On March 25, Don Munasinghe, Manager Data &
Analytics, at BDO Lixar, will speak about AI: How
Artificial Intelligence is Transforming the Work Place.
“Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer something for the
future, instead, it is proving to be an important business
tool,” says Michelle. “Don will provide a practical outline
to display the myths and demonstrate the immediate
value of integrating AI into business processes.”
The season will close on May 6 at Chemong Lodge, with
the topic of “Succession Planning – Is it Ever Too Early
to Begin this Process?” where the group will revisit this
key process and challenge conventional thinking and
approaches.
Member Cayley Ferguson, president of Northern Casket,
says that he appreciates the information about succession
planning which he has found applicable to his own
business.
Members Jason and Nikki Pulchinski from At the Lake
Distributing Inc and Shop the Lake say that KFBG has
been a great networking opportunity where they can meet
other family business owners and that the group is where
they’ve found most of their local service providers.
Michelle says that they are happy that their current
sponsors, who have been on board for many years,
will continue into the coming season: Part Time CFO
Services, BDO, Park Place Financial, LLF Lawyers, and
BDC (Business Development Bank of Canada).
for people to care for their aging parents nearby, and
we came up with this solution,” he continues. “The
suites provide a separate living space that gives each
generation some independence.”
These winterized homes come with plumbing and
heating that can tie in to services of the main home,
complying with the by-law requirements of the
particular municipality in which they are located. They
range from 700 sq. ft. to 1,000 sq. ft. in size, from one
bedroom to two-bedroom units, with a kitchenette,
breakfast area and bathroom.
“We take care of the permits required by the city or
township and advise the clients on that,” says Harold.
“The municipality also usually has a stipulation about
the percentage of the lot size or maximum footprint
that the suite can occupy, so that if there are already
sheds on the property, they may have to be removed.
We can also add the unit to the existing house if the
client prefers that option.”
These garden suites as well as pre-fab boathouses and
garages with lofts can be customized for people to
either assemble themselves or to have Kidd Bros. do it
for them.
“We want to make it easier for our customers to have
the buildings they want with a quick turn-around
time,” he says.
By Joanne Culley
Kloosterman General Contractors Ltd.
Continues to Build into the Future
Richard Kloosterman and his sons John and
Dan Kloosterman continue to operate a family
company that was started by Richard’s father
John over 40 years ago. John and Dan are the
third generation to be involved in the business. You’ve
probably seen some of their buildings – Mastermind Toys,
Firehouse Subs and Trans Canada Nissan on Lansdowne
Street and the 50,000 sq. ft. Kingdon Timber Mart in
Lakefield. The company specializes in commercial,
industrial and residential construction.
Rich Kloosterman says that they have had a very busy
year, with the completion of a 12,000 sq. ft. industrial
building in Pontypool, a storage building at the Kingdon
Timber Mart, beginning work on an industrial building in
Peterborough, and the construction of other commercial
and residential projects, including a stunning country
home south of Peterborough. In conjunction with the
architectural firm AGATHOM, the home is being built
into the side of a hill with one side open to capture the
magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. The
concrete, steel and glass building is being designed and
built to have minimal impact on the landscape. Rich says
that this project is really showcasing the resiliency and
flexibility of their team, that they can handle a building
of this size, shape and complexity.
Rich Kloosterman credits his sons Dan and John, project
managers and site supervisors, with the company’s
continuing success.
“My sons and I are a strong team who are dedicated to
our clients,” continues Rich. “We’re in it for the long term
and pride ourselves on our close attention to details. We
have a lot of repeat business because of our commitment
to quality and seeing a project through from beginning
to end and beyond.”
For over 25 years, Kloosterman General Contractors has
been serving Peterborough and the Kawarthas with high
quality residential, commercial and industrial construction.
Over the years they have established a reputation
for superior buildings, built on time and on budget to
their clients’ satisfaction.
“We use local trades, subtrades and suppliers, not like
out-of-town contractors, who tend to use their out-oftown
connections,” says Rich. “Over the years, we’ve
developed great relationships with our local trades and
suppliers. When we keep the business here, we are contributing
to a strong community and local economy.”
Rich says that one of the services they provide is working
with owners and the design team in the pre-construction
phase to assist in selecting the most cost-and-time effective
methods and materials for the project, which many clients
find beneficial. The company uses their most up-to-date
knowledge of the industry when providing their advice.
During construction, Kloosterman employs dozens of
local sub-contractors for excavation, foundations, structural
steel, plumbing, electrical, framing, concrete finishing,
stucco, masonry and more. All of the specialized
equipment is rented from local rental companies and
most of the building materials come from local retailers.
Kloosterman General Contractors Ltd. is located at 1542
Stewart Line in Cavan, just outside of Peterborough.
Proud Group Of Transportation Companies
Family Owned And Operated For 56 Years
For fifty six years, the Paxton group of companies,
owned and founded by Russ Paxton, have been operating
in the Peterborough area, moving clients’
products to points in Ontario and the U.S. These
transportation specialists include Paxton Transport
Ltd., D.C. Foster Courier & Express, Transport Overload
and Pinehill Forwarding Ltd.
“We started out with six trucks, and have grown
over the years to include 75 trailers, 15 tractors, and
about 20 various delivery vehicles,” says Russ.
Originally, the company was a PCV (C) freight carrier
out of Peterborough, with Schneiders and Burns
as two of their main customers. They delivered meat
throughout the area until 1990, until they shifted to
be more of a general freight carrier, and expanded into
the courier business with the acquisition of D.C. Foster
Cartage from Don Foster and added the ANC courier
local franchise. The company now has three divisions:
Paxton Transport Ltd. provides commercial and industrial
service to many points in Ontario and U.S. border
states. They can transport anything from an envelope
to a truckload. Their large fleet of vehicles of all sizes are
equipped to handle your freight transportation needs
quickly, safely and economically. They are affiliated with
a network of transport and courier companies across
North America and can also handle most of your freight
forwarding needs.
D.C. Foster Courier & Express is a complete local courier
service that provides same day service and next
day service within a radius of 160 km. Next day courier
service is available outside our local area to most major
centres in Ontario and the U.S. Call 1-800-461-6600
Transport Overload, the third company in the Paxton
group, provides mobile storage trailers for those who are
renovating, moving, or expanding. They can supply 40
ft. to 53 ft. storage units for rent by the week, month
or on an annual basis.
Arriving Early 2024
By Joanne Culley
ALL-ELECTRIC 2024 HONDA PROLOGUE
SET TO ARRIVE AT TRENT VALLEY HONDA
Monika Carmichael, Dealer Principal at Trent Valley Honda, is
excited to announce the arrival early in the new year of the
2024 Honda Prologue, their all-electric midsize SUV, which
has been co-developed with GM.
“The new Prologue has been long-awaited by staff and
customers,” says Carmichael, who won the Businesswoman
of the Year Award in 2019. “We’re happy that the technology
and infrastructure is in place to support this vehicle.”
The car will have an anticipated 450 km plus EPA range
rating, DC fast charging capability, generous interior space,
and a sporty style, so that it can go on adventures beyond
the city limits. Its state-of the art technology features
standard Google built-in, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto compatibility.
“The Prologue represents the next step in Honda’s
electrification strategy roadmap, which will see 15 new EV
models available by 2030,” continues Carmichael.
Trent Valley Honda is now taking orders for the Prologue,
with the first deliveries slated for early 2024.
Carmichael says that Honda has invested billions of dollars
at their plants in Alliston, Ontario and in their EV Hub in Ohio
so that customers can be assured of reliable, affordable
options. The company is also embarking on a joint venture
involving six major automakers to create a high-powered
charging network across Canada and the U.S. which will
allow electric vehicle owners the freedom to travel without
worrying about battery range.
The 7th generation of Honda’s best-selling SUV, the CR-
V, sets the benchmark for safety, technology, design, and
performance. Carmichael says that because the cars are
manufactured in Ontario, they aren’t experiencing order
backlogs as some manufacturers are, especially on the
hybrid models.
“The CR-V Hybrid is our core model that is still a good
stepping stone for those who are hesitant to go to a fully
electric vehicle,” she continues. “It gets about 800 km per
tank and has excellent safety features, such as a ‘snow
mode’ which allows for maximum traction and performance
in icy conditions. The ‘e-con mode’ helps drivers get more
fuel efficiency.”
Carmichael notes that for many years the CR-V has been a
top seller in Peterborough and the surrounding area because
of its suitability to the cottage country lifestyle, with lots of
room to carry outdoor equipment and supplies.
“We represent a brand that has always been committed to
the environment and offers products consumers want that
better their lifestyles,” she says. “Honda’s commitment to
safety, low emissions, new technology and reliability have
been the core and essence of our strategy and key success
factors for us since the inception of the brand in Canada, 53
years ago.”
