Excursions in Istanbul
The best of Istanbul
Our itinerary around the ancient Turkish capital starts with the famous
Blue Mosque whose official name is Sultan Ahmet camii, i.e. The Sultan
Ahmed Mosque. We remain enchanted by the detail and mystical colours
depicting its history. The itinerary continues with the Basilica Cistern, one
of the great works commissioned by the Emperor Justinian in 532. The
imposing building was used to store Istanbul’s water in Byzantine times
and later provided water to the Topkapi Palace.
We then head to the famous majestic Hagia Sophia, one of Istanbul’s
major monuments which was turned into a museum during the past
century and then converted again into a mosque in 2020.
After visiting this marvellous cathedral, our guide takes us to Grand
Bazaar where we enjoy some free time for shopping and lunch. To finish
our tour in style, we go on a magnificent cruise along the Bosphorus
Strait to admire the two parts of the city from an exceptional viewpoint.
Cruise between two continents
The first stop on our itinerary takes us to the Spize Bazaar where we feel
as if we have travelled back to Ottoman times surrounded by the exotic
smells, noises and aromas of mystical Istanbul and remain enthralled
in the customs and traditions of everyday life. A short stroll leads us to
the Yeni Camii an Ottoman Imperial mosque which is easily recognizable
because of the two minarets found at the corners of the avlu.
The time has come to board a typical boat inspired by the traditional
Turkish guletand set sail on a pleasant thrilling cruise along the
Bosphorus Strait. Lulled by the lapping waters, we admire the unique
landscape that passes before our eyes. This narrow canal connecting the
Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara winds for over 30 km among lush hills,
beaches, trendy bars, imperial palaces with lovely gardens and mosques
as well as simple wooden houses.
As the evening falls on the city, our coach takes us to the lively area of Taksim
Square which is considered the modern heart of the city of Istanbul. We can
enjoy a stroll along Istiklal Caddesi, a lovely pedestrian street or venture into the
bustling network of side streets filled with bars, antique shops and restaurants
with views over the Bosphorus.
Once back on our coach, we head to the old part of the city known as
Sultanahmet, the hub of the ancient Constantinople, surrounded by the sea
on three sides and by colossal walls on the fourth almost making it a natural
fortress.
In this fascinating setting, we stop for photos at the Blue Mosque, one of the
most important points of reference in the ancient capital with its imposing
domes, six minarets reaching for the sky and marvellous surrounding gardens.
We end our evening excursion with panoramic tour of the centre during which
we can admire some of Istanbul’s most famous monuments such as the majestic
ruins of the Byzantine hippodrome, testimony to the ancient past of this
incredible city.
