Annual Meeting
of Glenfield WI
THIS MONTH
was our Annual
Meeting and both
the President and
Secretary gave
their respective
reports to
members.
It was remarked on
how circumstances
have caused us to
move venues during
this last year. However,
we have finally ended
up back where we
began in the Church
Rooms, a venue that
suits us perfectly.
The speaker this
month was Caroline
Roberts who began
her talk by telling us
how she trained to be
a Blue Badge Guide
in Leicester with a small baby in tow. Said baby is now all grown up
and Caroline has guided many people around the historic sites of
Leicester. She continued her talk about Leicestershire’s connections
with Royalty by mentioning familiar names like Richard 111 and Lady
Jane Grey. She also included a lesser-known tale of how the future
King Edward V111 had met Mrs Simpson at Borough Court near Melton
Mowbray. Wallace being a close friend of the Furness family. It was an
interesting talk and members were encouraged to share their personal
experiences of meeting, even at a distance, with the late Queen and
other members of the present Royal Family.
• OUR NEXT MEETING will be at 2pm Wednesday
8th November at St Peter’s Church Rooms. The speaker
will be Jane Ramsey who will be giving a Chocolate
Demonstration. This promises to be an enjoyable and
possibly tasty afternoon. Visitors are always very welcome
so do come along and join us.

right time to put our gardens to bed for the year.
A little bit of tidying is useful
but avoiding cutting back your
perennials will provide much
needed protection for many of
our smaller insect friends like
ladybirds and lacewings.
Nicola Oakey, our guest speaker
for October suggested that this
time of year is one of the best
times to plant new perennials
and shrubs. Nicola, an RHS
award winning designer spoke to
us about planting drought proof
plants. She explained that autumn
is better for establishing plants
as they can concentrate on root
growing and not flowering which
they have to do in summer. Good
plants to include in your garden
for conditions like last year’s heat
wave, would be Echinops with
its long tap root and Stachys with
hairy leaves. Both adapt well to
