Calling Young Artists 

Interior Health is asking young artists to share 

their thoughts and experience in Interior Health’s 

second Tobacco and Vaping Poster Contest for a 

chance to win $150. 

Young people are the experts when it comes to 

understanding why youth use tobacco and vape, 

and how smoking/tobacco and vaping impacts 

them and their friends, family, school and community 

– it’s important to hear their voices and 

views. 

Contest Details: 

Youth in Grades 8 to 12 living in the Interior 

Health region are invited to participate in 

the Take a Breath: Teen Voices on Tobacco and 

Vaping poster contest. Aspiring artists may create 

and submit an original artwork that shares a 

message about the impact of youth tobacco use, 

smoking and vaping in one of five contest themes: 

· The importance of ceremonial tobacco for 

Indigenous traditions, and how it differs from 

everyday (commercial) tobacco use (open to 

Indigenous youth only) 

· Important facts about smoking/tobacco, cannabis 

and vaping products 

· Tobacco and vaping companies’ strategies to 

promote use 

· Impact of smoking/tobacco, cannabis and 

vaping on my life 

· Environmental impact of smoking/tobacco 

and vaping 

A winning poster will be chosen for each of the 

five themes. The successful artists will be awarded 

$150 in the form of an appropriate gift card of the 

winner’s choosing. The winning posters will be 

professionally printed and displayed in Interior 

Health hospitals and health-care centres, as well 

as on social media and the IH website. 

The contest is underway now, with entries due 

by 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 1 2023. The winners will 

be announced during the week of Jan. 15, 2024 – 

National Non-Smoking Week.

Conversations with Poets 

Join three award-winning West Kootenay 

authors, Jane Byers, Leesa Dean, and Rayya 

Liebich, for the first two shows in their tour 

supported by the Columbia Kootenay Cultural 

Alliance and Columbia Basin Trust. They’ll be 

performing a mix of previously published and 

new poetry at the Langham Theatre in Kaslo on 

Friday, November 3rd (7-9 PM) and again on 

Sunday, November 12th (2-4 PM) at the Vallican 

Whole in the Slocan Valley. 

“I’ve been wanting to do this kind of show 

for a long time,” says Leesa Dean, the tour organizer. 

“We aren’t just reading poetry. We are 

coming together as poets and discussing our 

deep connection to the genre and why poetry is 

important to us, especially in a world where art 

is under attack. Oh yes, and we’re also going to 

have fun doing poetry mad libs.” 

Jane Byers, winner of the 2017 Goldie Award 

for lesbian poetry, lives with her wife and teenagers 

in Nelson, BC. She is the author of two 

poetry collections, one memoir, and a poetry 

chapbook. She has had poems and essays published 

in anthologies and literary journals in 

Canada, the U.S. and England, including Best 

Canadian Poetry 2014. 

Leesa Dean is an instructor at Selkirk College. 

Her first book, Waiting for the Cyclone, 

was a finalist for the 2017 Trillium and Relit 

Awards. She is also the author of a novella in 

verse and two poetry chapbooks. Her poetry 

has been nominated for numerous awards, and 

she was runner-up for the 2022 Pacific Spirit 

Prize. 

Rayya Liebich is a Canadian poet of Lebanese 

and Polish descent has won many awards 

for her writing, including the International 

Amy MacRae Award for Memoir. Her debut 

full-length collection of poems, Min Hayati, 

was released by Inanna Publications in 2021. 

Passionate about writing as a tool for transformation, 

she teaches creative writing classes to 

youth, adults and seniors in Nelson, BC.

Climate Solutions Workshop 

What will it take to solve the climate crisis? The West Kootenay 

Climate Hub is offering an interactive workshop to 

the community using the cutting-edge simulation model 

En-ROADS to explore that question. The workshop will be 

held at the Nelson Public Library on Monday, November 6, 

7pm as part the library’s Climate Action Week. 

Together participants will test ideas on how to keep global 

heating to the goals of the Paris Agreement, while getting a 

better understanding of how climate, energy and land systems 

are interconnected. As well, considerations of equity 

and health and well-being impacts will be raised to capture 

the whole picture. Participants will discuss how to take your 

insights to your family, friends and colleagues to help accelerate 

climate action.

Laura Sacks, who will lead the workshop, has helped to 

found and co-lead the West Kootenay Climate Hub. She is a 

trained Climate Reality Leader, and is the 2019 recipient of 

the Suzie Hamilton Legacy Award. Anni Holtby, Chair of the 

Nelson Public Library and co-facilitator, is keenly aware of the 

role libraries play as a hub for information and community 

building. Libraries are a critical part of the response to our 

climate crisis. 

Sacks is passionate about presenting workshops using 

En-ROADS. “What I really enjoy about hosting these workshops 

is that no two are alike, as participants get to decide 

which policies are needed for a safe climate future. I also love 

considering what gets better by implementing climate solutions

the celebration kicks off down Highway 3A at Nelson’s Tenth 

Street Campus for a first-ever Intercultural Day event that 

invites members from the entire community to both attend 

and set up a booth. 

“We have been very successful on the Castlegar Campus 

with sharing the cultures of our students with the community 

for many years, and now we are excited to bring this 

wonderful energy and spirit to Nelson,” says Elizabeth Li, the 

college’s Cultural Advisor. “It is the vision of our college to 

be inclusive and welcoming to all, these events help celebrate 

our diversity.” 

Planning for the two events are now underway. Organizers 

are calling on external cultural groups or individuals in the 

community to take part in the Tenth Street Campus event. 

Those who want to share information, performances, food 

samples, activities, crafts, games and any other component of 

their culture are asked to contact Elizabeth Li at eli@selkirk.

Bigby Art Show 

Bigby Place, a 

program of Kootenay 

Society for 

Community Living, 

and the library 

have teamed up to 

celebrate artists of 

diverse abilities. 

The artists of Bigby 

Place are displaying 

their work in 

the Nelson Public 

Library’s art gallery 

space. The exhibit 

features drawings, 

paintings and 

multi-media art 

from many different 

artists and is a kaleidoscope of colour and creativity. 

The artists of Bigby Place are no strangers to the library. 

Many of them attend a monthly book club with the library 

and several volunteer at the library. One of the artists, Nick 

says that the art is “beautiful and it makes me happy.” Another 

artist, Raphael, who created superhero fanart, says that he has 

always been an artist and that creativity runs in the family. He 

says that the exhibit at the library will “make people happy.” 

Art is a regular feature of Bigby life. Indeed, staff at Bigby 

Place make the effort so that participants have the artistic freedom 

to express themselves through art. Staff say that the artwork 

made by the participants gives them the opportunity for 

inclusivity within their community. 

The exhibit continues through the end of November. 

Nelson Public Library 

Give or Take a Few Million Years 

“In retrospect, I feel like my work as a geologist was, in fact, 

my art education.” Nelson artist Carol Wallace reflects on 

her experience with the ridgelines and landscapes that have 

informed her life in Give or Take a Few Million Years, her 

upcoming exhibition at the Nelson Museum, Archives & Gallery, 

which opens on Friday, November 17 at 7pm and runs 

through February 2024. Through drawings, sculptures, and 

textiles she builds a dreamlike, otherworldly exhibition worth 

delving into. 

“Geology is like time travel. Rocks are visible evidence of 

earlier worlds going back more than 4 billion years,” Wallace 

says. “Atmospheres were created, oceans opened and closed, 

mountains were formed and eroded, and microorganisms 

evolved to a world we know today. We are all embedded in 

deep time.” The exhibition invites the viewer to experience a 

visual anthology of stories found in the rocks. Geologic imagery 

is stitched and inked on layers of silk organza, magnified 

minerals of local bedrock are projected onto the gallery wall, 

biomorphic shapes are sculpted onto fractured rock, and ink 

drawings remind us that a rock is much more than its exterior 

surface. 

“Give or Take a Few Million Years is an exhibition which 

brings together several distinct but interconnected series that 

Carol has developed over several years - a brilliant confluence 

of art and science, that challenges our collective understanding 

of time and evolution,” says Nelson Museum Curator 

Arin Fay. “The importance of presenting other perspectives is 

fundamental to understanding and expanding 

all subject matter, and seeing issues 

and ideas with open eyes not burdened by 

normative or limiting preconceptions. This 

exhibition presents a portal to a geological 

timescale rarely considered by people outside 

of the realm of science, and one which 

helps to tell the foundational story of place.” 

Wallace’s career as an artist began with a 

bachelor’s degree in Geology, which led her 

to exploring Northern BC, the Yukon and 

the Canadian Arctic. Her detailed field notes 

turned into geologic maps used by government 

agencies and led to Wallace starting 

a consulting company in Nelson. In 2014, 

Wallace decided to pursue her art career full 

time, and has since exhibited her work at 

galleries throughout the BC interior.

RDKB Accessibility 

In a groundbreaking move towards inclusivity and accessibility, 

the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) has 

announced the launch of its Accessibility Advisory Committee 

(AAC). The initiative is set to open doors to a more inclusive 

future for the region. 

The RDKB is seeking local heroes with lived and learned accessibility 

experience to become part of the AAC. Members of this 

committee will be the driving force behind initiatives aimed at 

making Kootenay Boundary a more welcoming and accessible 

community for all. 

Anitra Winje, RDKB’s Corporate Officer, underscores the significance 

of this endeavour, saying, “Creating an inclusive, accessible 

region is not just a dream but a necessity. This is our chance 

to turn that dream into a reality. Join us, and let’s build a brighter 

future together.” 

The committee’s term of two years will include four in-person 

meetings per year, and members will also have the option to participate 

virtually. Compensation of $100 per meeting makes it 

both an impactful and rewarding commitment. 

Members must be actively involved with organizations for people 

with disabilities, be a caregiver for people with disabilities, or 

a person living with a disability. Candidates may also represent 

a broad range of under-served and equity-seeking groups such 

as, but not limited to: Indigenous Peoples, faith-based groups, 

LGBTQ+, newcomers, new Canadians, persons living in poverty, 

people of diverse ethnic or cultural origin, seniors, women, and 

youth.

Ireland, RDKB’s Furry Hero 

The Regional District 

of Kootenay Boundary 

has proudly introduced 

its newest team member, 

Ireland – a facility 

support dog working 

alongside Trail RCMP 

victim services. Despite 

her recent arrival 

in Trail, Ireland has 

already begun making 

a positive impact on 

victims and witnesses 

of crime or tragedy in 

the Kootenay Boundary 

area. 

Ireland’s journey 

to becoming a justice 

facility support dog was 

guided by the Lions 

Foundation of Canada 

Dog Guides in Oakville, Ont. Highly trained and ready to lend 

a paw, Ireland provides solace and support to individuals facing 

tough times, offering them the unique comfort that only a real 

service dog can provide – with lap time, a calming presence, and 

an ever-wagging tail. 

While there are approximately 50 justice dogs in Canada, Ireland 

proudly stands as the first and only accredited justice facility 

support dog guide in the Trail and Greater Area. She is the first in 

the Kootenay Boundary to support all ages, providing her RCMP 

and court services within the criminal justice system to children, 

youth and adults alike. Having to do her job flawlessly, with no 

petting allowed on duty, she is very different to a therapy or emotional 

support dog. She has to be calm and quiet in public, ignore 

other animals and people, and has to toilet on command so she 

doesn’t do her business at an inopportune moment. 

Jenn Penney, RDKB’s Program Manager of Victim Support 

and Ireland’s primary handler, explains, “Her role is to offer support, 

particularly to children, vulnerable victims, and adult clients 

during court testimonies. She brings comfort, one cuddle at 

a time.” Ireland’s presence will be felt in the witness box, client 

meetings, hospital examinations, forensic interviews, and community 

events. 

Penney emphasizes that facing emotional experiences or accusers 

in court can be isolating and frightening for many, but with 

Ireland by their side, individuals can find much-needed solace 

– even experiencing reduced blood pressure and heart rate. She 

reassures, “It’s going to be okay.” 

To keep up with Ireland’s heartwarming journey, follow her on 

her social platforms: @compassionatecanine on Facebook and @ 

compassionatecanine_Ireland on Instagram. 

Jenn and her team plan to organize significant fundraisers 

within the local community to garner support from individuals 

and businesses alike. Funds raised will be allocated to Ireland’s 

well-being and to expand her service area, reaching out to crime 

victims attending court sessions in more distant locations. Ireland 

is expected to make appearances at these events, both in person 

and, hopefully, in the form of adorable stuffed animals. 

Jenn concludes, “We hope to create mini stuffed versions of Ireland 

that can be purchased, with a second one donated to a child 

benefiting from Ireland’s services. It’s all about spreading warmth 

and comfort.”
