Broad and Balanced...
Year 6
Year 6 have been continuing our Black History topic during October, and we have read
several recent inspirational speeches, which gave us a great understanding of the impact and
techniques used within Martin Luther King Jr’s famous, “I have a dream,” speech. We read
dissected aspects of their powerful phrases such as the use of hyperboles, modal verbs and
repetition, to be impactful and emotive.
We then began to draft ideas for our own inspirational speeches in order to change an aspect
of Ludgvan school for the better. Ideas represented by year 6 were: toilet facility renovation,
longer break times and even no homework! We plan to deliver our inspirational speeches to
Mr Anderson once they are completed.
Our Art unit for this term was to develop our drawing skills, focusing on tonal shading, cross
hatching, contour shading and perspective drawing using 1-point perspective, which was
developed by an Italian artist, Filppo Brunelleschi. We explored the use of horizontal,
vertical and diagonal lines to create a sense of depth to our 2-dimensional page. Some of our
art work was absolutely amazing.
During RE, Year 6 have learnt about Hinduism; particularly exploring the terms, karma,
dharma, atma, Moksha and Brahma. We have drawn a cycle of reincarnation which
demonstrates the birth, death and rebirth cycle in Hindu belief, and also created a board
game, based on snakes and ladders, but with a Hindu twist. Many of the deities and customs
were implemented into our games and they were extremely fun to play.
In Maths, our focus has been based on the four operations. We have refined our skills in
multiplying/dividing by 10, 100 and 1000, used short and long multiplication whilst focusing
on the importance of place value and we have also explored the use of squared and cubed
numbers.
