WELCOME
Tēnā koutou katoa.
Welcome to our Spring edition of Moving Together.
Since our last newsletter a lot has happened at Sport
Auckland. In tandem with Stanhope Road School, Sport
Auckland won the 2023 National Sport and Recreation Award for Local
Community Impact. You can read about that award within the newsletter
but suffice to say we were very rapt with the national recognition of the Play
Festival that we delivered at Stanhope Road last November. We have more Play
Festivals in store for the community over the next year or so.
Community continues to be at the heart of what Sport Auckland is all about. As
our purpose is to inspire our communities to live healthy active lifestyles. You
will find throughout this newsletter stories about delivering play, active rec and
sport to our tamariki and rangatahi within our communities.
Our Green Prescription and Active Families initiatives continue to perform well
within our communities where we help individuals and their wider whānau
become more active and healthier through physical activity, exercise and
dietary changes.
We love working alongside our communities and with all the volunteers that
help make play, active recreation and sport happen. A big congratulations to
Mark Sutton and Leonie Moore for winning volunteer of the month awards for
the awesome mahi they are doing within their own respective clubs. And a big
thank you to One New Zealand for their generous sponsorship of these awards.
Our final word in this edition of Moving Together is to wish our All Blacks and
Black Caps all the very best for the remainder of their respective world cup
tournaments. The Black Caps have started off well and revealed another
young upcomer on the International stage, Rachin Ravindra… And the big clash
in the Rugby World Cup quarter final between the All Blacks and Ireland is
mouthwatering to say the least. These events help inspire the next generation
of tamariki and rangatahi to get involved in play, active recreation and sport.
The World cups can plant the seed that play, active recreation and sport can
be so much fun. On our part, we will continue to work on creating as many
opportunities as we can to allow our tamaraki and rangatahi to participate in
and enjoy the fun that play, active recreation and sport brings to the table.
Until next time, take care everyone.
COMMUNITY IMPACT - LOCAL / COMMUNITY
Sport Auckland – Play Festival
An inspired partnership between Sport Auckland and
Stanhope Road Primary School led to Tāmaki Makaurau's first
‘Neighbourhood Play System”, where the goal was to create
inclusive, accessible play opportunities for the Stanhope
Road Primary community, which represents 60 ethnicities,
and where 13 percent of tamariki identify as Māori.
Sport Auckland laid the foundation for the successful model
by listening to the diverse voices of local tamariki, to fully
understand barriers and shape the outcome. Taking the time
to undertake whakawhanaungatanga with tamariki created a
shared sense of purpose, as well as trust.
More children in Aotearoa are
missing out on participating in sport
and physical activity due to barriers
preventing them from having the
opportunity.
We have allocated $1.019M into our local
community to provide opportunities for
young people to engage in sport, active
recreation and play.
It is evident that practical capabilities such as
cost, confidence, transport all contribute as
barriers to children missing out on physical
activity opportunities. For this reason, Jimmel
Holdings was established to pilot a project for
children in the community who regularly miss
out on sport and active recreation opportunities.
Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa funding has
enabled Jimmel Holdings to engage with
six schools in Mount Roskill, Royal Oak and
Onehunga to cater for children that face major
barriers and support them into sport. Over
the next 12 months you will see Jim and Mel
MOVING TOGETHER
INSPIRING HEALTHY AND ACTIVE LIFESTYLES
working for schools
Healthy Active Learning is a joint
government initiative between Sport
NZ, Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand,
and the Ministry of Education to improve
the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi
through healthy eating and drinking and
quality physical activity.
The HAL team were busy delivering in school
professional development workshops to staff.
We have been mainly focusing on what is quality
physical education and the MoveWell resource.
Staff at Ormiston Primary School engaged in their
first whole staff professional development session
in May this year. Staff were highly engaged and
enthusiastic about teaching Physical Education in
their habitats!
The HAL team has been actively engaged in
collaborating with the Manaiakalani Cluster during
their teacher-only day, which involved connecting
all the schools in the cluster. As part of our
efforts, we organised a Kī-o-Rahi workshop with
three specific modifications aimed at providing
scaffolding for the complete game and
establishing a connection to the health and
Physical Education curriculum. Teachers and
staff members from primary to college level
enthusiastically participated in the workshop,
eager to learn how to adapt Kī-o-Rahi to suit their
respective learners and schools.
Healthy Active Learning Opportunities
Our latest Healthy Active Learning Opportunities
Day brought 35 local primary and intermediate
teachers and four external organisations together
to focus on quality health and physical education,
held at the beautiful Auckland Netball Centre our
teachers enjoyed keynote speakers, workshops
and physical activities which aimed to inspire and
build the kete of our teachers.
“The day was full of good
content, and I was able
to implement some new
approaches to my teaching
immediately. Learning
creative ways of getting
students into teams has
worked well in my class.”
WAKA ama Experience
Through Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa
funding, the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki
Cluster were able to access Waka Ama
opportunities and connect to their local
awa.
A special journey has been in the works for our
schools in the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Cluster. This
cluster is heavy populated with Māori and Pasifika.
Through insights gathered from our schools we
found that tamariki were very interested in Waka
Ama experiences however due to accessibility,
cost and transport they were missing out. Schools
also wanted to connect to their local awa for
opportunities to learn about the local history and
how our ancestors navigated Te Moana-Nui a
Kiwa.
We are excited to share that 6 schools and over
400 tamariki were provided the opportunity to
participate in their first Waka Ama experience
at Ian Shaw Ramp under the Kaitiaki of Arocas
– Tania Albert and Ngā Hau Maiangi (Manukau,
Cook Islands, Te Paerangi & Pakuranga
Outriggers/Waka Ama clubs).
spring 2023
“Thank you for having us at
Waka Ama, it was so much
fun. My favourite things
that I learnt were how
to paddle and the calls. I
think it’s one of the best
water sports now”
MOVING TOGETHER
INSPIRING HEALTHY AND ACTIVE LIFESTYLES
Green Prescription
We’ve had lots to smile about in our
Health and Wellness space since our
last Newsletter. Our vision “to inspire
our communities to live healthy active
lifestyles” has been represented
throughout our community programmes.
We would like to share some of our
current opportunities and let our pictures
do the talking!
Our wellbeing programmes are running
and thriving. We have established four hubs
throughout Tāmaki Makaurau where our
community voices and engagement have
enabled us to develop and deliver interactive
educational sessions.
“These sessions have made
a massive difference to my
mental health, helped me
get out of the house and
meet people with similar
goals. I needed this.”
Active Families
In our summer newsletter, we introduced our Healthy Active Families programme which launched in
February at St Pius X Catholic School.
In autumn, we celebrated of the success of our St Pius initiative which was delivered each week
throughout terms 1 and 2. During this time, we also gathered insights which enabled us to enhance Active
Families.
We were excited to begin our new Active Families model this winter and having since seen our
programme come away in leaps and bounds, we feel spring is the perfect time to share some of those
highlights with you.
Continuing to be guided by Te Whare Tapa Whā, our service focuses on the health and wellbeing of
our young people (aged 5-17 years), their whanau and changes that can be made within the home
environment as well as enriching their connections with others.
“My kids absolutely love hanging out here every
Wednesday. We have enjoyed every single minute
being here. Thank you.”
spring 2023
Group exercise opportunities
This year has seen our communities exercise
opportunities go from strength to strength with
the rollout of our SitFit, ComFit and GreenFit
programmes. These progressive programmes
allow members to gain exposure to different ways
of being active over their 8-12 week jumpstart.
Walking groups
Our monthly walking groups focus on connecting
socially and with our local greenspaces. Here we
have been able to explore different parks around
Tāmaki Makaurau, meet people and get moving.
These have been so popular we are hoping to
increase the regularity in the future.
Group Exercise Opportunities
Our new GreenFit classes exercise classes are gym based and
are perfect for building confidence in the gym!
SPRING 2023
ONE New zealand volunteer of the month
We’ve partnered with One New Zealand to celebrate our amazing volunteers who
make a difference in our communities!
Mark Sutton gives back to his community by
volunteering at Ponsonby Rugby Club!
Marks nomination was for his “commitment
to supporting local kids and whānau in our
community. Aside from owning his business,
Mark volunteers his time to helping coach
a local U12 rugby team, manages the team
logistics during the season and then organises
all the details for a trip to Taupo for the NZ
Rugby Festival and also performs the role of
‘Junior Rugby Delegate’ for the clubs Kelston/
West Auckland area. Mark is loved and
appreciated by his club and local whānau
whose kids are looked after by Mark’s work.”
Ngā mihi to Mark for going above and beyond
for community!
Congratulations to Leonie from Howick
Netball Club!
Leonie currently serves as President of the
Howick Netball Club and was nominated
because she “goes above and beyond to
give all of our members a great experience.”
“She currently coaches the teams, and is so
generous and giving with her time. She is so
passionate about netball and getting as many
young people in teams as possible. She lives
and breathes our club and just works so hard
to meet everyone’s needs.”
Congratulations Leonie! Thank you for all that
you do in our community through sport!
