Print | PrintProConsultancy

We are grateful and humbled by the support you show

for Oakhaven. This was never clearer than during the

pandemic when your generosity ensured that we were

able to provide but also significantly increase our care to

support our community and NHS colleagues..

It also showed how fragile our income is. The closure of the shops and

cancellation of events meant that we lost nearly £1.5 million of our usual

income streams overnight. Thankfully the increased community and

government support helped to largely meet that lost income .

We are now through the pandemic, but we now face a cost-of-living

crisis. We fully understand how this is impacting everyone with hugely

increased mortgage costs, food costs & essential utility costs – all place

greater financial pressure on all of us.

There can be a general belief that Oakhaven is financially secure, but

this is a misconception. The reality is we have a huge reliance on legacy

income just to meet our existing costs. Currently one in every four of our

patients are cared for by the generosity of those that leave gifts in their

wills to Oakhaven.

It is the community’s support that has always enabled the hospice

to grow, to flourish and to provide end of life care for everyone in our

catchment area free of charge. It is you, our community, that makes this

all possible. The demand for increased services has continued and we

strive hard to continue to meet this need, but it comes at a cost.

It is with this in mind that we write reluctantly to say that these

general economic financial pressures impact on Oakhaven as well. We

are here because of your support, and we respectively ask that you

continue to remember Oakhaven during these difficult financial times.

Our general income is broken down as shown on the next page.

It is a myth that hospices are financially stable. All hospices including

ours carry reserves, but they are there to protect against the precarious

nature of our income. but it doesn’t take much to significantly impact

those reserves.

We expected this year to be challenging for Oakhaven and the first

four months of the year have confirmed this with a shortfall of £100,000

against expected income. But we anticipate the year to become more

challenging. This means that we may have to significantly, drawdown

on reserves to meet this increased service demand.

4

matters

We are managing our costs as effectively as we can, and we ask that

you consider what support you can afford to show Oakhaven in this

difficult time.

We have always been and will always be entirely dependent on your

generosity to continue the work that the hospice does. We know that

the cost of living is impacting on each and everyone of us. But it is

impacting your hospice too.

The best way to ensure the future of your hospice for both you

and your generations to come is through regular giving. Included is a

regular giving form and if you can support us on a regular basis, please

consider what you can afford and complete the form and return to us.

But we understand this is not the case for everyone and so you may

feel more able to support us through a one-off gift, or a gift for the

future as a gift in your will or through donations to one of our shops,

or even a gift in time through volunteering.

Oakhaven Hospice is your hospice – we are extremely grateful for

the support you show us, and we know these are difficult times for all.

So, we ask respectfully as to how you feel you may be able to support

your hospice in what are difficult times for Oakhaven too. Thank you.

Mock CQC inspection

At Oakhaven we always strive to provide the highest quality care

for our patients and their families and as a quality assurance

exercise, in July 2023, we arranged for a mock inspection of our

services to be undertaken by an external independent expert.

As a healthcare provider,

we are regulated by the

Care Quality Commission

(CQC) and are required by law to

adhere to certain regulations and

standards when delivering our

regulated activity of ‘Treatment of

disease, disorder or injury’.

The CQC monitor and regulate

services by way of inspection and

our last inspection was some time

ago in 2016.

The CQC measure the

standards of care provided within

5 key questions;

• Is the service safe?

• Is the service effective?

• Is the service caring?

• Is the service responsive?

• Is the service well-led?

We were rated as overall ‘Good’

by our regulators in 2016 and a

link to the full report can be found

on our website.

Following the pandemic,

the CQC have published a new

strategy and are going to change

the way they monitor, assess and

engage with providers, to focus

more on what matters to people

who use healthcare services.

This requires a new assessment

framework, and this is being

launched later in 2023.

In preparation for this new

approach, and subsequent future

inspection, we completed a selfassessment

against the current

standards as well as undertaking

the external review to ensure we

had a broad view of our services.

The mock inspection itself

comprised of a pre visit

questionnaire being sent to our

key stakeholders (commissioners,

local GP practices, District

Nurses, local NHS trusts etc),

compilation of a detailed

evidence file containing policies,

reports, meeting minutes

followed by a full day onsite

visit by our external expert

who spoke to over 20 members

of the team and sat in on our

multidisciplinary team meeting.

The ‘inspector’ also had focused

interviews with Board members

and the executive team. This

process closely mirrored what you

would expect in a real inspection,

with the slight difference

being that we informed staff

before hand of this event and,

the real inspection could be

unannounced.

The output of the exercise

was a comprehensive report

detailing the inspectors’

findings, measuring us against

the current standards. Overall,

it was incredibly positive

and highlighted many areas

of excellent practice. There

were a small number of

recommendations made, but

reassuringly, these had already

been identified in our selfassessment

exercise and so for

the majority, we had already

begun taking action on these

improvements.

Feedback from our staff

present on the day was very

positive, stating they found it

helpful to have an opportunity

for a ‘practice run’. We plan to

complete this exercise again

in the future to ensure we are

providing the best care we can for

our patients and their families.

Care home provider Colten Care and Oakhaven Hospice held a garden party to celebrate

23 years of collaboration.

More than 70 guests

attended the event

at Oakhaven Hospice

in Lymington that included

Oakhaven staff and trustees,

Colten Care residents and team

members, and fellow community

health professionals.

It was an opportunity for

Oakhaven’s Chair of Trustees

Melville Kendal to thank Colten

for what he described as ‘lifechanging’

support enabled

by nearly £290,000 worth of

fundraising since the year 2000.

The celebration featured

catering by Colten Care and a

residents’ choir involving singers

from Court Lodge and Linden

House and the New Milton home

Kingfishers.

June Moonan, a resident

from Kingfishers, said: “Coming

Thanking you for your gift of time

The first week in June is National Volunteers’ Week and the chance for Oakhaven to say a big

THANK YOU to all the volunteers who help support the hospice in so many ways. During the

week, we celebrate our volunteers and share some of their stories more widely.

The week ends with our

annual Volunteers’ Garden

Party, which is held in the

beautiful gardens at Oakhaven.

This year was no exception and

after enjoying a welcome drink,

our volunteers were treated to

a delicious cream tea provided

by Oakhaven Kitchen, and were

serenaded by a barbershop group

who sang many old favourites.

Our Volunteer Achievement

Awards, which were presented

at the tea are based on the

Oakhaven values of Care,

Accountability, Respect

and Empathy. We value the

contribution and commitment

of all our volunteers, and we also

felt it was important to recognise

some of those volunteers who

have gone above and beyond

their role. We received over 88

nominations, which just goes to

show how amazing our volunteers

are. The awards were presented

by the Chair of the Board of

Trustees, Mel Kendal.

As it turned out, the weather

was kind and everybody enjoyed

the tea, the entertainment, the

presentations, and the chance to

chat with other volunteers and

staff.

For us at Oakhaven, it was

our big THANK YOU to ALL our

fantastic volunteers.

We have a range of volunteer

roles supporting Oakhaven,

so why not get in touch and

see if there’s one that would

suit you and help us to make

every moment matter for our

patients, their families and

friends. You could be joining us

at the next Volunteers’ Garden

Party. Contact volunteering@

Thank you to New Milton Sand &

Ballast who supported the event

by sponsoring the marquee.

David is a

studying an

Sciences and hoping

to become a Doctor in

the future. During his holidays

he has been volunteering in

the Day Hospice, where his

talent for playing the guitar

has been much appreciated by

our patients and staff as they

all joined in a singalong. David

has gained a lot from his time

Little acorns…

Our schools project ‘The Acorn Project’ welcomed

three schools to Oakhaven this summer – New Forest

Schools (which has 3 hubs in Totton, Dibden and Fawley),

Brockenhurst College and Hordle Primary School.

Every session brings a

different experience and

lots of laughter as the

schools work together with

patients on an art project.

New Forest schools entertained

our Acorn patients with all sorts

of activities, including breakdancing

and lots of stories!

Working together they designed

and produced a banner depicting

Hythe Waterfront, including

Hythe Pier and the Beacon. The

students were delighted with

the finished result. They took it

back to the Dibden base. They

are going to display the banner at

the entrance to their school for

all to see!

Pupils aged 16 and 17 from

Brockenhurst College, who were

learning the importance of

how creative art can be useful

to patients as once they get

chatting it takes their mind off

some of their own problems.

An old wooden table was

‘upcycled’ to celebrate the year

2023, which saw the Coronation

of King Charles III and is being

used within the Inpatient Unit,

so when we have young children

visiting patients in IPU, they have

something to occupy their time.

Hordle Primary School students

spent time chatting with our

Acorn patients and learning

about what facilities are offered

at Oakhaven. The pupils were

interested in our counselling

services and having come

together to paint a picture of

the seaside – instead of taking

the canvas back to school, they

wanted it to be displayed in

one of the counselling rooms at

Oakhaven.

We always try to please! So that

is exactly what has happened,

Thank You Hordle School! .

Good Neighbours

Ten years ago, the need was identified for non-clinical

support of Oakhaven patients in the community. Many of our

patients facing end of life were suffering from loneliness and

isolation. Sometimes even when there are family members

and carers around you can feel lonely, just having someone

outside of their illness to form a friendship with can make a

huge difference to a person’s wellbeing.

The Neighbours scheme

was created in response

to this need and has gone

from strength to strength; we

now having a team of over 50

volunteers who each generously

give several hours a week to

support people in their own

homes, helping with everyday

tasks that can sometimes seem

overwhelming; going out for a

chat over coffee or sometimes

sitting with them so that their

carer can get out for a muchneeded

break safe in the

knowledge that their loved one is

in capable hands.

In just the last year alone,

Neighbours have supported 120

people and given a total of 4,400

hours!

The amazing difference is

evident in Theresa’s story, she

became a neighbour to a lady

who hadn’t left her flat for 6

years. As Therea said ‘I took my

lady out in a wheelchair lent by

Oakhaven; it was the first time

she had been out in 6 years,

except for within an ambulance!

We went for a stroll around her

housing estate; she absolutely

loved it and was so happy feeling

the breeze on her cheeks!! I left a

happy lady, and we look forward

to going further afield next time!’

This is the difference we make,

building trust and friendships, as

the patient said ‘It was absolutely

brilliant to get out, I only trusted

Theresa to be able to take me and

owe her everything to have made

the effort to get me out. I met up

with a friend who I hadn’t seen

for several years while on one

of our walks and she has since

visited me in my flat.’

Would you like to learn about becoming a member of this

amazing team? If so, contact Sara on 07483 956707 or

Oakhaven Care offers

This wonderful service offers

full time support, care and

companionship in your own

home enabling you to live

well at home for longer.

Live-in

Care

Live-in care

If you are finding that you need a little more

support and are considering a residential care

home, Live-in care might well be the answer

for you. Live-in care is a home care service that

provides someone to live with you in your home

to assist you with the support you may need. It

is a great cost alternative to having to go into

a residential care home or can offer short term

12

matters

Mr E has been using Oakhaven Care for live-in care for 2 years, initially

for his wife who sadly passed away. He then spent a month on his own

before asking for live-in care for himself, and was matched with Carer

Miss N. Not only has this helped him remain at home but he is also less

lonely as he now has company daily. Mr E said without this service he

would no longer be able to remain living at home.

support for the person who is currently caring

for you. This may enable them to take a short

break or have a holiday. It can also support

you after an operation or hospital stay to allow

you to get home as quickly as possible. Most

importantly live-in care allows you stay at

home surrounded by all that you love.

With live-in care you can be confident that

you will receive the care that you need. We will

work with you to identify what your individual

care needs may be and then put a plan in place

to meet those needs.

Your package of care will be unique to you

and tailored to meet your needs

Live-in care may be a long terms solution to

your care needs however for others live-in care

may be something that you only need for a

short period of time.

Live-in care can be for as short as two weeks

or as long as you require support.

This option allows you to remain in the

comfort of your own home and

• Retain your independence and choose your

daily routine.

• Support with medication, meals and personal

care.

• Stay close to your friends and family.

• Stay in the familiar surroundings you know

and love.

• If you have pets, live-in care allows you to

stay home with them.

• Have a companion living with you 24 hours a

day 7 days a week – helping you live the life

you want to lead.

• Ensure you are still able to get out and about

when you want to.

Fully trained carers

Our carers are all fully trained and provide a

first-class quality service. We will provide a

personal service where your individual needs

are met. Our carers provide a compassionate

service respecting both your home and your

privacy.

When setting up a new live-in care package

one of our office supervisors will visit the

home and carry out an assessment, during

the assessment we will assess current needs,

wishes and wants. We will take this information

to create a personalised care plan and then use

details to match you to potential carers. You

will then be presented with live-in staff profiles

to select your preferred carer.

If you’d like to know more about live-in

care in your own home and how Oakhaven Care

may be able to support you please contact us by

phone or email. If you wish we would be very

happy to come and visit you at home to discuss

your needs.

Dementia care

at Oakhaven Hospice

We are pleased to share our news of an exciting

development that will improve care and support

for people affected by dementia. Thanks to a

generous donation to Oakhaven Hospice, we have

been able to undertake a collaborative project

with the charity Dementia UK which means

we will be appointing a dementia specialist

Admiral Nurse into our existing Clinical Nurse

Specialist Team during Autumn 2023.

Admiral Nurses are registered nurses

who specialise in supporting families

affected by dementia who are

experiencing complex needs. Having an

Admiral Nurse at Oakhaven Hospice will

allow us not only to support those affected by

dementia, but also to support and develop best

practice for other healthcare professionals.

Dementia is a neurodegenerative, palliative

condition that affects the brain, leading to a

range of symptoms including memory loss,

difficulties with thinking and problem-solving,

and communication challenges. Despite

dementia being a life-limiting condition, it

is recognised that nationally, palliative care

services are not as readily available to people

with dementia as they are to those with other

life-limiting illnesses.

Dementia is also recognised by the Office for

National Statistics as the leading cause of death

in England. Every three minutes in the UK,

someone develops dementia, and it is expected

that 1m people will be living with the condition

by 2025. Within our local population, both New

Forest East and West have higher than average

rates of dementia, with the West having the

second highest rate in the UK.

Oakhaven Hospice is committed to the

promotion of advanced care and future

planning and provides support and guidance

to people when starting conversations about

death and dying. However, there is a limited

understanding of this key role of the hospice

and its importance for families facing dementia.

Being able to meet these needs sensitively is

central to the partnership between the Admiral

Nurse and Oakhaven Hospice.

Oakhaven Hospice aims to ensure that

hospice care is available for those who need it

by working with and within the community.

Sharing knowledge and using the experience of

others through partnership working

will help us to achieve that aim.

If you are a registered nurse and

would like more information about the

Admiral Nurse Clinical Nurse Specialist

role at Oakhaven Hospice, please contact

Denise Major, Director of Patient Services.

matters

Support,

friendship

and care

at Oakhaven Day Hospice

What really sets

nursing in the Day

Hospice apart is

firstly the depth of

the relationship that

you develop with the

patients. Often you are

with patients for hours

a day, week in week

out, often over a period

of weeks or months.

During that time, you get to know them

very well. They share their stories

with you and you get to hear all about

their life, their family, their children and their

grandchildren etc.

Frequently when a patient comes to us on

their first day, they are anxious and unsure,

unaware what they will gain from coming to

us. Most, understandably, do not want to cross

the doors to the Day Hospice as a patient. The

courage that it must take when you are unwell

and feeling low to step into and trust a new

group of people can be a huge challenge to

overcome.

We aim to turn those feelings of uncertainty,

doubt and fear into something positive and

often within a matter of weeks patients often

say things like: “Oakhaven has given me the

confidence to go out and engage with others

in a safe environment. It is the highlight of my

week and a lifeline.”

We support and encourage patients and

congratulate each other on things that have

gone well. We provide a listening ear and

advice when things have not gone so well. One

minute we may be changing a dressing and

the next be giving advice on symptom control,

helping patients write goodbye letters to family

members and generally prepare for their death.

At the Day Hospice patients receive support,

friendship and often a bit of independence.

Oakhaven helps people to feel more like

themselves, not only the person they were

before diagnosis, but accepting the reality of

who they are now.

Oakhaven also helps the patients to feel

that they can still enjoy some of what life has

to offer: the company of others – including

making new friends, new activities and maybe

even enjoying some good food freshly prepared

in our kitchens. Meanwhile others find the

confidence and motivation to take up what they

thought were past skills such as painting or

writing. Or maybe just have a chat or read the

newspaper...

‘Thank you Oakhaven staff

and volunteers, you are simply

the best’

Give a gift that lasts

a lifetime

For Mark, who is a regular day hospice

attendee, Oakhaven Hospice has been a real

haven to him, ‘It’s never a dull place and all

the staff and volunteers are truly dedicated and

professional, they also genuinely care about

you. Without the ongoing support of Oakhaven,

life for me would be very dull indeed. I am

lucky to have them as part of my life and I am

eternally grateful for everything they’ve done

for me.’

We are able to care for one in four people

like Mark thanks to gifts left in Wills.

Leaving a lasting legacy to Oakhaven in this

way ensures we will be able to continue caring

for those in our community when they need us

most, helping us to make every moment matter.

Could you help us with

a gift in your Will?

A pledge of any size really will make a

difference to our future.

Summer fundraising fun

Family Fun Day

We opened our doors on Saturday the 24th

June for the ever-popular annual Family Fun

Day sponsored by John D Wood of Lymington.

Over 1500 people visited the event and 100

volunteers kindly gave their time to man the stalls.

The Pimm’s was flowing, the car park was full

within 10 minutes of opening and a grand

day was had by all. Oakhaven are delighted

to announce that an incredible £19,000

was raised this year, the highest amount

on record!

Save the date - 29th June 2024 – see

you there, same time, same place!

Gig in the Garden

We hosted our first ever Gig in the Garden in

early August where over 650 people entered

the beautiful hospice gardens to enjoy the

sounds of All About ABBA, Boogie Bumpers

and Groovality.

The weather was favourable as the sun shone for

most of the weekend, not even the cold dull weather

on Saturday could dampen the spirits.

Those that came along to their performance

of choice enjoyed all that was on offer – great

music, good dance moves and a tasty picnic

to boot. The atmosphere was absorbing

and engaging with many moments of real

emotion and clearly this was reflected in

the unimaginable £22,000 raised.

Oakhaven Charity

Golf Day

On Wednesday 19th July we hosted

our Annual Charity Golf Day at

Barton-on-Sea Golf Club. The

weather was kind, and a fantastic

day of golf was had by the record

breaking 30 teams that took part this

year, all competing for The Oakhaven

Charity Bowl.

Our speaker, Aaron Phipps, was a revelation who

gave a heartfelt, funny and inspirational after dinner

speech that clearly inspired the audience to dig

deep and give even more to us.

A huge Oakhaven thank you to everyone that

worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the

event happen from volunteers and sponsors, through

to all the staff at Barton on Sea Golf Club without

whom, this wonderful event could not take place.

With the introduction of a couple of new fundraising

initiatives including a silent auction to play at

several stunning golf courses throughout the South,

the golf day raised an unbelievable £24,000.

place at Netheravon airfield

skydived from 14,000 feet.

The Spinnaker Tower abseil

had a team of 14 who took on the

challenge of abseiling 100 meters

down this iconic tower.

Thank you to everyone who

Ways to help – your support is vital

Direct ways to help us

Give a small regular amount

with Oakhaven Giving

As little as £3 a month over time will

make a difference: the more people

sign up, the more quickly it will do so!

E fundraising@oakhavenhospice.co.uk

W oakhavenhospice.co.uk/regular-giving

Play the Oakhaven Lottery

Give a small amount, with the bonus of a

weekly chance to win a prize. Play from

just £1 a week and you could win cash

prizes, whilst helping Oakhaven at the

in some situations, eliminate the amount

of inheritance tax your beneficiaries may

have to pay.

Make a donation

If you cannot commit to regular giving but

can afford to make a one off donation, that

will of course be very much appreciated.

where you can also download a Gift Aid

declaration form and find information

about how to donate by post or shop.

Thank you

It is really important that we can continue to deliver

all of our services free of charge to our patients and

their loved ones now and in the future.

How your donations help

£40 is the cost of an hour of compassionate

care on our Inpatient Unit.

£90 could help pay for a session of

bereavement support or counselling for

someone struggling with their loss.

£120 is the cost for a patient to attend

our day hospice; patients enjoy a social day,

shared laughter and a delicious lunch – and

can relax for a while.

£234 could help fund a three hour home

visit to a patient by our Community Nursing

Team.

All donations, whether one-off or regular and

however big or small, help to ensure that

Oakhaven will be providing compassionate

care and helping to make end-of-life as

pain free and manageable as possible, for

generations to come.
