The RACE to overcome the crisis in
Head and Neck cancers
Oracle Cancer Trust
Since Oracle was founded, we have funded over
£8million of research projects. Our research
focus is to provide support and funding for
projects that result in better understanding,
data and improved patient outcomes for those
affected by Head and Neck cancers.
Head and Neck cancers are the 4th most
common cancer in men in the UK and the 7th
overall. Around 12,400 people are diagnosed with
a Head and Neck cancer each year with growing
levels of late-stage diagnoses, low public
awareness and poor rates of mortality.
Patients are often left with debilitating
appearance, speech, eating, swallowing and/or
respiratory problems as well as psychological
effects of loss of function and change in body
Oracle Cancer Trust is the UK’s leading Head and
Neck Cancer charity. Our mission is to improve
Head
and Neck Cancer patient quality of life
and outcomes in the UK.
Our charity’s purpose and activities are all
aimed at improving quality of life
outcomes for Head and Neck cancer
patients. To this end, Oracle Cancer Trust
supports and runs 4 types of projects:
Research projects: Oracle Cancer Trust
supports research projects that
demonstrate potential to deliver and
drive greater understanding about Head
and Neck cancers, how best to treat
them and where the greatest unmet
needs are. This includes 1) lab-based
medical research projects, 2) data
gathering and analysis of disease and
patient trends, and 3) qualitative and
behavioural research projects.
Awareness campaigns: Oracle Cancer
Trust drives, delivers and supports
awareness campaigns focused on Head
and Neck cancers
Collaboration programmes: Oracle
Cancer Trust promotes and supports
collaboration and creates key
opportunities for knowledge sharing and
agreeing best practice within Head and
Neck cancers
Experience of patients: Oracle Cancer
Trust will support, promote and
encourage more focus and
understanding on the patient experience
within Head and Neck cancers.
Oracle jointly funded a new study that suggests
robotic surgery has high cure rates for some
Head and Neck cancer patients. Published in
the Journal of the National Cancer Institute,
results from the RECUT study reveal that,
following transoral robotic surgery (TORS), the
two-year overall survival rate for recurrent head
and neck cancer patients whose recurrence has
been detected at an early stage is nearly three
quarters (72%). This improves on other
treatments currently available to this patient
group, which often includes further
radiotherapy or open surgery, in combination or
alone, or chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy
with palliative intent.
