Head and neck tumours represent diagnoses where the benefit of proton therapy is very high.
Proton therapy enables us to treat patients with tumours that were previously difficult to manage,
found near healthy tissues such as the optic nerve, the retina or the spinal cord. Proton therapy
considerably reduces the risk of developing undesirable side effects of radiation and it
also reduces the risk of secondary tumours. The benefit of proton therapy can be seen early
during treatment, as the vast majority of patients manage the therapy without hospitalisation and
various invasive interventions, such as the insertion of a gastric tube in the stomach to provide
nutrition. In the long term, proton therapy reduces the risk of damage to the vision, hearing,
intellectual functions, the risk swallowing and breathing problems, and dry mouth.

of developing memory impairment.

impairment or even paralysis.

structures (macula, cornea, retina,
optic nerve), mitigating the risk of visual
impairment or loss.
Lower risk of hearing impairment or
loss, namely at high frequencies.
