Thanksgiving
Training,
November 22-26
The New York Ski Educational Foundation is
offering an on-snow training camp for high
school-age cross-country ski racers and
biathletes. The training sessions are meant
to allow more experienced junior skiers to
jump-start the winter season with quality
training sessions; working with high-level
coaching staff. The timing of the training
coincides with snow-making operations at
Mt Van Hoevenberg so there will be guaranteed
skiing with likely or predicted low
temperatures in November. More info and
Adirondack Center for Loon
Conservation Hosts
Annual Loon Celebration
Celebrate loons with the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation staff and featured
speaker, Dr. Mark Pokras on Sunday, October 8 from 1-4:30pm at Paul Smith’s
VIC and learn more about loon conservation in the Adirondacks! They will have live
music by Blessid Dirt, food provided by Chef Humble, and adult beverages from Hex
& Hops. The afternoon of fun includes a scavenger hunt, loon-calling contest, and
the last chance to enter the Hornbeck canoe raffle. Learn more at: adkloon.org.
Saranac River projects impact
access for paddlers this fall
Several projects along the Saranac River section of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail
will impact access for paddlers and other users this fall. The projects include construction
on Casey Road, a dam removal near Indian Rapids, and a fish ladder being
installed at Imperial Mills Dam. “Our community partners have done great work to
inform us of the impact these projects will have on users,” said NFCT Stewardship
Director Noah Pollock. “We want to be sure that paddlers, anglers and other outdoor
recreationists know about this work and adjust their plans accordingly – the goal
is to keep people safe and informed. Ultimately, these projects will enhance these
sections of the Saranac River and we’re excited to see them come to fruition.”
Starting in September, both the traditional Union Falls Dam portage and the
Casey Road portage are inaccessible. At present, a temporary portage route requires
users to walk east on Union Falls Road to Hawkeye, then take Silver Lake Road to
NY Route 3. Paddlers can also access the river near the Silver Lake Road bridge.
Elsewhere, a dam removal project at the Indian Rapids dam has resulted in extremely
hazardous conditions. Paddlers are urged to avoid this section of the river. Finally,
a project to add a fish ladder to the Imperial Mills Dam is underway. Paddlers should
take out river-left, well above the dam and follow a trail to SUNY Plattsburgh’s campus.
A yellow NFCT portage trail sign indicates the correct route. Paddlers or other
users with questions should contact NFCT Stewardship Director Noah Pollock at
noah@northernforestcanoetrail.org. Additional information, including maps of
alternate portage trails, can be found at northernforestcanoetrail.org.
Warren Miller ALL TIME is Coming
Warren Miller’s ALL TIME is bringing 74 years of filmmaking reimagined to a theater
near you this fall. And this season, it’s all about good turns and good snow on
good hills with good people. Narrated by Jonny Moseley, ALL TIME dives deep into
elements that Warren himself first identified as the stuff of which snowy dreams
are made. From the birth of ski towns like Sun Valley and Aspen to icons and innovators
like the original hotdoggers, the film brings the best of seven decades along
with humor and inspiration from today—featuring Maine’s finest athlete, Donny
Pelletier, and the next generation of skiers and riders at Woodward Park City.
Less a documentary than a love letter, ALL TIME is a way to honor how, where,
and with whom we’ve made ski and snowboard movies since Warren first picked
up a camera in 1949. Join us as we celebrate how snow sports have burrowed into
our collective consciousness as an obsession and a way of life. The two-year party
for 75 seasons on snow starts October 2023. See ads in this issue to find a show near
DEC Urges Hikers to Avoid the
Adirondack Rail Trail During
Ongoing Construction
NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is urging residents, visitors,
and recreationists to avoid the Adirondack Rail Trail, to ensure the protection of
public safety and assist in timely completion of the project. Ongoing construction
to complete Phase 1 of the project spanning from Lake Placid Depot to Saranac
Lake Depot is underway. While some sections of the trail between Lake Placid and
Saranac Lake may appear complete, crews are still working on the trail surface,
parking areas, fencing, intersections, and more. The area is closed for use and should
be avoided until the project is complete.
There are ample alternatives to the Adirondack Rail Trail near Lake Placid and
Saranac Lake. Hikers can explore the Bloomingdale Bog Rail Trail, accessible along
multiple points from Saranac Lake through Onchiota, the Paul Smith’s College VIC,
which boasts over 25 miles of maintained trails, and Henry’s Woods and Heaven
Hill Trails, two networks of trails accessed from Bear Cub Road in Lake Placid. To
learn more about the Adirondack Rail Trail, including notices and information on
construction phases and closures, and suggestions for alternative trails, visit the
DEC website: dec.ny.gov.

Fall in the Northeast brings the most
amazing running weather. We
have beautiful foliage with cool,
crisp mornings. Our running community
is lucky to have some awesome events
to choose from that support incredible
organizations. Post Covid, we lost some
events, but as you’ll see with the slate that
we are profiling, some are celebrating 15
and even 47 years! Get registered for a fun
fall and support our sport. Not interested
in running or walking, then jump in to
volunteer. Volunteering offers a way to
stay involved, meet some great people,
cheer on athletes, and support local nonprofits.
Starting on Saturday, November 4,
the 11th annual Revolutionary Run
for Veterans at “America’s Turning
Point” 5K begins at Fort Hardy Park in
Schuylerville and runs north along the
historic towpath across the Champlain
Canal and into Hudson Crossing Park.
This race is unique in that you start on a
field, run on a trail and finish on the roads!
Something for everyone. The run starts at
10am and is followed by refreshments
(hamburgers and hot dogs provided by
the Saratoga County American Legion
Posts) with ceremonies for Veterans and
award winners at Fort Hardy Park. The
race will also commemorate the 250th
anniversary of the Battles at Saratoga,
known as America’s Turning Point. Bring
the kids along for the free fun run.
The Saratoga County 250th American
Revolution Commission, consisting of 13
official members (in honor of the 13 original
colonies), has planned and organized
multiple ceremonies, events, activities
and celebrations recognizing the 250th
anniversary of the American Revolution
in Saratoga County including recognition
at this race. Online registration is $40 until
Nov. 3 and proceeds benefit the Saratoga
County Veterans Trust Fund. Register:
runsignup.com.
The following day on Sunday,
November 5, you’ll be happy to hit the
trails for the Fall Back 5 Trail Race. You
even get an extra hour of sleep before
you head over to the Saratoga Spa State
Park. Once again, you’ve got a combination
of terrain with a few fun hills and
even a staircase! Running this event you’ll
discover new areas of the park, but don’t
delay since registration closes at 200 runners.
Hosted by Saratoga Stryders (members
get a $2 discount) this race features
awards donated by iRun LOCAL and a
post-race door prize drawing open to all
runners and volunteers. You do have to be
present to win!
The race starts at 10am and there is
day-of registration ($35) beginning at
8:30am. It is $30 online until Nov. 2. You
can head to iRun LOCAL on Saturday
to register and if already registered pick
up your bib from 12-2pm. Net proceeds
from the event will be used to support the
programs and activities of the Saratoga
Stryders. For more info: saratogastryders.
November is full of unique runs with
great venues. On Friday, November 10,
the 15th annual Shenendehowa Veterans
Day Dash 5K Run/Walk will be held on
the Shenendehowa Central School campus
in Clifton Park. This 5K starts with a
bang, literally from a revolutionary war
cannon, on the track. Runners then head
out onto the closed course for a flat and fast
5K on the campus. This race is a favorite
as it showcases some of Shenendehowa’s
sports teams. The boys swim team, boys/
girls wrestling, boys/girls Nordic skiing,
and of course the cross-country runners
are on the course in their sports attire. Yes,
that means speedos and singlets! Veterans
can run for free by emailing for a code:
info@freihofersrun.com. The day kicks
off at 9am with kids’ runs on the track
followed by the 5K at 10am. A ceremony
to honor veterans precedes the awards
ceremony.
New this year are high school age
group awards for non-Shenendehowa
schools. Athletes from area schools are
invited to join the 5K and will have their
own awards category – more recognition
of our area youth athletes. Registration
is $30 until Oct. 27, then goes up to $35
through race day. This event benefits the
Shenendehowa boys cross-country and
track & field programs. Over 150 boys participate
each school year! These funds support
three seasons of athletics. Donations
can be made on the registration page for
those unable to join on Friday. Sign-up:
offers $5,000 in prize money which
brings in great talent from our region and
beyond. The Stockade-athon 15K has a
rich history with nationally and regionally
known runners coming to compete.
It was a favorite of Ed Whitlock’s for
years. Ed was an English-born Canadian
long-distance runner, and world-record
holder for the first person over 70 years old
to run a marathon in less than three hours,
with a time of 2:59:10 in 2003. Ed and Frank
Many athletes who grew up in the
area come back as adults to nab some
of the prize money. A glance at the top
90% ran cross-country in high school
An Outstanding Fall Hike
By Bill Ingersoll
Maps of the Hurricane Mountain Wilderness tell
an unfortunate story: that these mountains
were once not viewed in terms of their wildness,
but in terms of the resources that people hoped
might be extracted from them. Thus we have inherited
today a region full of features named Potash Mountain,
Soda Range, Coal Dirt Hill, Spruce Mill Brook, Big Slash
Mountain, and Limekiln Mountain. These were not places
for adventure or romantic contemplation of the sublime,
but places where commodities were to be exploited. This
historical ambivalence perhaps explains the current scenario,
in which only a patch of wilderness remains preserved
– almost all of it in the highest reaches of the range.
Maps still label the arch of mountains connecting Big
Crow Mountain with Weston Mountain as the Soda Range,
but for hikers this is better known as Nun-da-ga-o Ridge.
From a distance the range may not look like much – a span
of indistinct flat-topped summits – but it is threaded by
a 3.2-mile path that connects a number of highly scenic
ledges. Therefore, the experience of Nun-da-ga-o Ridge is
among the best days you can have in the mountains.
Because this is not a marked trail – except for a few
key turns – it is not a route for everybody. But for those up
to the navigational challenge, Nun-da-ga-o is an excellent
hike. (This unmarked section is colored red on the
accompanying map.) The path is most often hiked as part
of a loop, beginning and ending at the Crow Clearing trailhead
near Keene. Altogether, the loop is 6.1 miles long
with numerous ups and downs.
HIKING continued from 11
OCTOBER 2023 13
▲ LOST POND.
The progression of views is better when hiking in a
clockwise direction, beginning at Big Crow Mountain.
Also, a few steep ledges are far better suited for scrambling
up in this direction than scooting down. That said, hiking
in a counter-clockwise direction is neither difficult nor
unpleasant. Allow at least a full two hours to hike the path,
but with all of the stopping to enjoy the views you will likely
spend a minimum of three hours traversing the Soda
Range – plus the additional time to complete the loop.
This is an outstanding fall hike, with ample views
across the Gulf Brook basin to the High Peaks. An extensive
forest of poplar makes the nearby foliage predominantly
yellow, with streaks of red imparted by maples on
the distant slopes.
Getting There – You can find the trailhead by following
NY Route 9N/73 to downtown Keene, where
Hurricane Road (also designated County Route 13)
heads east, beginning next to the town offices. Follow
Hurricane Road uphill for 2.2 miles, where O’Toole Lane
turns left at Glenmore. This is a winding gravel road
that continues to climb into the mountains to the Crow
Clearing trailhead, a total of 3.3 miles from Keene. Along
the way you have good views of the eponymous Crows
standing high above the road.
Note, however, that the final 0.3-mile of the road is
narrow and unplowed in the winter. The parking area
has an irregular configuration, forming a loop around an
old cellar hole. The limited parking spaces do fill early on
peak weekends.
The Trail – There are two trails beginning at Crow
Clearing, and the trail to Big Crow (and the west end of the
Nun-da-ga-o path) begins at the north end of the parking
area. It passes through a handsome balsam fir forest with
▲ WESTON MOUNTAIN.
PHOTOS BY BILL INGERSOLL
two intermittent streams to cross. After the second, the
trail promptly begins to climb. The balsams do not climb
very high up the mountain with you; instead, red pines
take over and offer a few early glimpses of the surrounding
landscape. Giant Mountain can be seen over the side
of Hurricane.
At 0.4-mile and about 400 feet above the trailhead, you
reach an intersection; to the right is the start of the Nunda-ga-o
Ridge path. One small sign and perhaps a few trail
markers are enough to get you started, but the majority
of this route is unmarked. It begins by contouring around
to a col on the north side of Big Crow and then following
the ridgeline north. You do not have to wait long before
encountering your first view – in about 10 minutes the
path bisects a bald spot with a southerly vista, and then
passes a ledge with a lateral view across a beaver quagmire
toward Weston Mountain.
Each successive knob is a little higher than the previous,
and the views come at irregular intervals. At 1.2
miles the path reaches the largest and steepest of the
ledges; it comes in two parts, with a side path to another
view in between. Continuing along the loop, the main
path winds through the woods from ledge to ledge, and
often it is merely a narrow corridor lined by balsam fir.
Depending on the angle of the ledge, the views range from
Weston at one extreme to Whiteface at the other. Note the
gradual changes in the High Peaks as you circle the ridge:
Giant slowly moves behind Hurricane, Big Slide becomes
a prominent bump on the horizon vying with Marcy for
prominence, and Pitchoff remains far more eye-catching
than neighboring Cascade.
Between 2.2 miles and 2.4 miles, the path spends a
considerable amount of time on open rock, with promi-
nent ledges at both ends. Here, the views are lined up well
with the valley at Johns Brook – a distant gash in the High
Peaks, located at the foot of Mount Marcy. These ledges
also reveal the rocky summit of Coal Dirt Hill, which
would no doubt offer many good views of its own.
Strangely, though, the path bypasses Coal Dirt Hill and
contours along its southern slopes instead. Upon reaching
a col southeast of the summit, it promptly begins a long,
gentle ascent of the northern ridge of Weston Mountain,
which in turn leads to the summit itself at 3.2 miles (3.6
miles from Crow Clearing). At 3,183 feet, this is the highest
point on the loop. This view is notably different from
all the previous ones you have encountered, for now Lost
Pond is clearly visible in the high country between here
and Hurricane. This watery element is absent from most
of the rest of Nun-da-ga-o Ridge.
The remaining 2.5 miles of the loop is a completely different
experience, all of it following well-worn trail where
encountering other hikers is far more likely. Although
there are no markers between Weston and Lost Pond (as of
2022), the route is obvious as it leads down the southwestern
slopes, steeply at times, until 0.4-mile later it delivers
you into the lush bottomland north of Lost Pond. The first
landmark is the Biesemeyer Lean-To, a secluded shelter
above 2,800 feet in elevation with limited water access.
At this point you begin to see official trail markers for
the first time since Big Crow. The trail skirts around the
west side of Lost Pond, but if you wish to see its iconic view
of Hurricane Mountain you will need to actively seek out
shoreline openings.
From the pond’s outlet, a long and gentle descent into
the Gulf Brook valley follows. At a point about 1.5 miles
from Weston’s summit, several things happen. First, you
pass the relocated Gulf Brook Lean-To uphill on the right,
and then the northern trail to Hurricane Mountain on the
left. All that remains of your loop hike is the one-mile-long
trunk trail back to Crow Clearing – a section so gentle that
it passes quickly.
Minnewaska
State Park Preserve
Carriage Roads with Scenic Views
to Extend Your Season
By Dave Kraus
Whether you are a dirt riding
newbie or an experienced
“graveler,” there’s a perfect
place in upstate to ride on well-maintained,
unpaved roads while enjoying
some of the most spectacular scenery you
will find anywhere.
Located in Ulster County, Minnewaska
State Park Preserve perches on almost
22,000 acres of pristine parkland on top
of the Shawangunks Ridge between the
Hudson River and the Catskills. The
“’Gunks” rise gradually to Sam’s Point
on the south end, while farther north the
main park visitor center overlooks Lake
Minnewaska, just off NY Route 44/55 that
snakes its way over the ridge from New
Paltz to Kerhonkson. The park was opened
in 1993 after the state bought the property
in 1987 to protect it from urban development.
Since then, the park has been
enlarged with significant assistance from
the Nature Conservancy and Open Space
Institute. OSI also helped fund the new
Minnewaska Visitor Center that opened in
2020. For more info: parks.ny.gov/parks/
minnewaska.
The Shawangunks Ridge is both geologically
and biologically distinct from
the Catskills to the west, hosting an ecosystem
that includes plants and animals
rarely found elsewhere in New York State.
Chestnut oak forests and pitch pines are
common, and the pines shrink to dwarf
size toward the south end to create a miniature
forest that’s also covered with blueberry
bushes that turn a fiery red in the fall.
Best of all, the park’s 35 miles of carriage
roads give cyclists access to some incredible
scenery including lakes, waterfalls,
fall foliage, and spectacular views of both
the Hudson Valley to the east and Catskill
peaks to the west. As fall temperatures and
foliage work their way south, riding in the
Shawangunks is a great way to extend your
cycling season for several more weeks after
colors peak in the Adirondacks.
Minnewaska has an entry fee of $10
per vehicle at the main park entrance on
Route 44/55. You can also get in with your
Empire Pass, and on weekdays any senior
over 62 can enter simply by scanning the
QR code on the back of your New York
driver’s license. There is a connecting carriage
road to adjacent Mohonk Preserve
and you can ride from one to the other.
If so, you will need to pay a separate $20
per person day use fee and the trails are
actively patrolled in that private preserve
run by a non-profit organization. The trails
at the Mohonk Mountain House are open
only to guests of that for-profit resort.
This Minnewaska 13.5-mile beginner
counter-clockwise gravel loop allows a
first-time rider at the park to visit some
of the most stunning viewpoints, while
skipping the toughest climbs on the carriage
road network. You will start from
the Minnewaska Visitor Center that has
restrooms, exhibits about the park, and
park staff available to answer questions.
Riding past the Lake Awosting beach, go
out on the Upper Awosting carriage road,
climbing gently at mile 2.5 past Litchfield
Ledges that turn rain or snow into waterfalls
of water or ice. Also here is the trail
to Rainbow Falls where a short walk lets
you see the rainbow after rain and a short
walk. Just get there before mid-afternoon
when the sun goes behind the cliff.
A short descent brings you close to
Lake Awosting, where another short
detour can bring you to either the dam
that enlarges the lake or the stone beach
that also has restrooms (Note that swimming
is only allowed until Labor Day).
This intersection is also where you
would continue to connect to the Smiley
Carriage Road and High Point Road. The
newly opened 2.8-mile High Point Road
will now enable you to ride all the way to
the Visitor Center at Sam’s Point Preserve.
But be ready if you do, as the new road has
some steep climbs of 11-13%.
If you’re following this route, it’s also
here where you turn left to start the climb
up to Castle Point, past overhanging cliffs
to the spectacular views atop the point. If
you bring your lunch this is a great place
to stop for a picnic.
Continuing your ride on the gradual
downhill from Castle Point you will
come to one view after another across
Palmaghatt Ravine past the cliffs of
Gertrude’s Nose and toward the Hudson.
There are some sharp curves near cliffs
and no guard rails, so ride carefully!
Just past 7.5 miles, you can either continue
straight back to Lake Minnewaska
or turn right for the out and back ride to
Millbrook Mountain with its own spectacular
cliff top views. On the way stop
for a photo at Patterson’s Pellet, a glacial
erratic boulder left behind by the retreating
glaciers that helped shape this area.
Heading back to the visitor center, you
will have the steepest (but very short)
climb up to the picnic area that gives you
a final fantastic view over the lake toward
the peaks of the Catskills.
Here are some tips that will help you
have a great ride at Minnewaska: Bicyclists
must wear helmets, ride only on maintained
carriage roads, yield and give warning to
pedestrians and horses, and ride in a safe
manner. Only class 1 e-bikes are allowed
on park carriage roads; a type 1 ebike only
assists the rider while pedaling and up to
20mph. The roads feature great signage,
but you can also pick up a park map at the
main gate or visitor center. Be aware that
park carriage roads may skirt steep dropoffs
with minimal warning signage so exercise
caution while keeping a close eye on
children and inexperienced riders.
More tips: Carry out what you bring
in! Restrooms are only available at Lake
Minnewaska and at the stone beach area
at Lake Awosting. Arrive early if you are
going on a weekend or holiday as parking
lots fill-up quickly; park in the upper lots
for easiest access to most of the carriage
roads. Bring a lock and cable for your
bikes if you plan to do any short off-bike
walks to some of the viewpoints on this
ride route. Take it easy! The carriage roads
are designed for leisurely enjoyment, not
high-speed cycling. Awosting Falls is a
popular viewpoint, but the climb from
it back to the visitor center is extremely
steep for cyclists.
Other areas you may want to avoid
include: The southern end of the Lower
Awosting Road climbing to Lake Awosting;
steep sections of the Smiley and (newly
▼ RIDERS ON CASTLE POINT.
opened) High Point roads; and the full
loop around Lake Awosting that’s very
rough in places.
If you’re looking for post-ride refreshments,
head west down the hill to Rough
Cut Brewing in Kerhonkson or stop by
the Mountain Brauhaus at the base of the
ridge in Gardiner.
A PBJ ON SNOWY
MOUNTAIN, 2020.
OCTOBER 2023 19
▶ LAST DAY ON THE
NORTHVILLE-PLACID
TRAIL, JEN, PAM, BETH,
SEPTEMBER 2022.
Self-Discovery by Adventuring Together
By Pamela DelSignore & Jen Ferriss
Back in April 2020, when time was all
we had, an idea was born and collaboratively
developed on a spreadsheet
– The PBJ Challenge. Pam DelSignore, Beth
Post, and Jen Ferriss (PBJ), running friends
and members of the Saratoga Stryders,
would test the limits of their athletic abilities,
try something new or revisit a past goal.
Pam became inspired by the
Dirtbag Diaries podcast, episode 147,
“Shenanigans:” dirtbagdiaries.com. In
summary, two rock climbing friends, separated
by miles, wrote letters challenging
each other to climb tricky Boulder problems
close to their homes. Challenge
accepted; their friendship grew stronger.
In 2020, this would be the perfect cure
for isolation amid our “stay close to home”
orders. The 2020/21 PBJ Challenge would
run from Labor Day 2020 to Columbus
Day 2021. We would train outdoors, six
feet apart in order to complete our individual
challenges together.
In the spirit of the podcast, Beth and
Jen challenged Pam (South Glens Falls) to
climb Mount Marcy, a feat she had been
talking about for years but never seemed
to prioritize. Hiking up the highest peak
in New York was not the challenge – but
negotiating open summits and rock
scrambles would test her mettle.
Pam and Jen challenged Beth (Saratoga
Springs) to run a half marathon. Beth started
running in her 50s and perfected the
run/walk technique. She loved data and
used her Fitbit to help regulate her speed.
However, Pam and Jen saw the technology
as a barrier and Beth seemed skeptical of
her ability to go farther than a 10K because
her Fitbit was telling her to slow down. The
Wineglass Half Marathon intrigued Beth
and this challenge helped her commit.
Lastly, Pam and Beth challenged Jen
(Saratoga Springs) to cross-country ski a
black diamond trail. Jen, being a new skier,
had yet to find her groove and excelled at falling
over. But Jen, full of spite and stubbornness,
would put time and energy into learning
how to stay upright, glide and embrace
hills; even ones with trees and turns.
The PBJ Challenge was the ultimate
cross-training plan. With each season
we found time to get outside and train
on a weekly basis. We were there together
to support each other’s challenge. We
climbed Marcy, ran a half marathon and
cross-country skied together. Additionally,
we each had a stretch goal. Pam wanted
to swim the length of Schroon Lake,
Jen wanted to ride her bike up the Lake
Desolation hill, and Beth wanted to kayak
farther than her typical route.
As with all plans we had to modify
and be flexible. Instead of swimming
the length of Schroon Lake, we had a PBJ
Triathlon that took us from Lake Lonely to
▲ MOUNT MARCY
SUMMIT, 2021.
Schuylerville. The bike up Lake Desolation
never timed up well so Jen rode up every
steep pitch of road off Saratoga Lake,
and then up the Prospect Mountain road
with Pam, while Beth ran it. Jen’s black
diamond XC ski – became two seconds
crossing a black diamond trail at the
Garnet Hill Outdoor Center. And Beth’s
virtual Wineglass Half Marathon fell on
a hot and humid day. She completed it,
but with a bit of disappointment for all
the work she had put in. Jen further challenged
Beth to run After the Leaves Have
Fallen in Minnewaska State Park Preserve
on a crisp fall day. The race was an absolute
success for PBJ and the perfect end to
the PBJ Challenge 2020-21.
Pam, always looking for the next big
thing and inspired by her brother, one day
asked us if we would be interested in hiking
the Northville-Placid Trail, a 138-milelong
trail through the Adirondack Park
connecting Northville and Lake Placid.
Pam’s brother had solo thru-hiked the trail
in 2011. Jen, the hiker in the group, could
not contain herself – she finally had someone
interested in hiking the trail that she
was gearing up for (literally buying lightweight
gear) for the past three years. She
was in. Beth likes to say yes before knowing
what she’s getting into, and so agreed
as well. Little did we know how amazing
this experience was going to be for our
partners of Muench Workshops,
he takes guests – and his own fitness
routine – on photography-centered
tours to locations including Alaska,
Madagascar, Kenya, Cuba, Slovenia, and
the Galapagos Islands.
In his 20s, Andy participated in cycling
and long-distance swimming and rode
his bike 6,000 miles around and across
the country. “That changed my life,” he
remembers. Then is his 30s and 40s he
lived what he calls “the good life – too
many heavy meals, too much junk food,
and no activity” that left him overweight
and out of shape. Finally, in January of
2020 he took his wife’s advice at age 58 and
started to get serious about healthy living.
He ended up losing over 100 pounds over
the next 18 months and now religiously
follows a fitness routine that he adapts to
his trips to guide workshops around the
world. Sadly, he lost his wife Nancy to cancer
in August 2020 before she could see
the final results of his efforts.
“I still eat a tremendous amount, but I
eat better – my plates are 75% vegetables
and a handful of carbs and protein. I don’t
try to over think it, but I eat a lot of calories
because I’m working out a lot.” He does
admit to being “addicted to ice cream”
and often plans his bike rides to include
an ice cream stop.
Andy has been a photographer since
age nine, starting out working at a local

camera store in Larchmont in Westchester
County, where he opened the store in the
morning, then graduated to running the
darkroom. Later he worked at IBM, then
spent ten years as COO of SmugMug, an
online photography exhibition and marketing
service for photographers. He’s a
published author in worldwide magazines
and newspapers, books, and his work
hangs in boardrooms and living rooms
around the world. He also displays his
photos on his own website: andywillia.ms.
Then in 2007 he and partners David
Rosenthal and Marc Muench started
Muench Workshops. “We had been doing
sort of a sideline making fun photo weekends
when I was COO of SmugMug and
we had done that for seven years – long
weekends in Yosemite, Acadia, and Bryce
Canyon. We were sitting around the campfire
in Death Valley and all three of us came
to the conclusion that we could do this for
a living.” Today Muench Workshops does
over 120 expeditions annually and has a
staff of 16 pro photographer guides and
other employees.
Andy credits determination and his
Apple Watch with being his prime motivators
as he worked to shed the weight
and learn self-discipline to adhere to a
workout schedule. “I put the watch on in
January of 2020 and kept moving until it
told me I had actively burned calories in a
variety of different ways to the figure I had
set. If it was 8pm and I hadn’t done it yet, I
had to go out and do it.”
Andy doesn’t stop his fitness routine
just because he’s on tour. Most recently he
and his girlfriend Leslie went mountain
biking in Slovenia. When a bike is available,
he will hire a local guide and ride with
them. He says it’s worth it to pay someone
who knows the best locations to ride, specific
routes, and where to rent a reliable
bike. He’s followed this strategy to ride in
the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, Slovenia,
Croatia, Patagonia (“it was amazing”),
Namibia, Canada, Alaska, and Spain.
“From a fitness and exploration standpoint
I love doing that. The coolest way to
see a new city or area is by bike. We’ve gone
into Zagreb, Croatia’s capital, and rented
bikes – it’s a great way to see the city.”
If there’s no bike available, he still does
what he calls his baseline fitness routine,
running a 5K every day and doing some
high intensity interval training. “No matter
where I am in the world. I’ll run anywhere
even though I hate it because it’s an
activity you can do anywhere.”
He also takes some compact fitness
equipment with him. “I use TRX straps
that you can buy for home or travelling
and it’s the size of a softball when you roll
it up – I never go anywhere without my
TRX. I can use them in a hotel room or
even attached to tree in Kenya.”
At home in Saratoga Springs, Andy
concentrates on his cycling with a stable
that includes mountain and fat bikes, plus
a road bike modified to run flat bars that
he finds more comfortable for road and
gravel riding. He got his first new bike in
2020 when he moved to Saratoga Springs,
and walked into the store looking for a
new bike in the depths of pandemic supply
chain disruptions.
“They kind of laughed at me with
‘Do you know how hard it is to get a bike
right now?!’” But they did have a Domane
model in stock and he ended up buying it
the first time he saw it, the first new bike
he had bought in over 30 years. Since then,
he has ridden all around the region near
his home and particularly likes attending
Bike Adirondacks events. He credits the
organization’s “Find a Ride” website page
with helping him find many of his favorite
bike routes: bikeadirondacks.com.
Wherever he goes in upstate NY or
around the world, he always has his
iPhone with its 48mp camera with him
just in case he comes across “the” shot,
and he makes sure to exercise in some way
every day. “I don’t feel good if I don’t exercise.
If my day doesn’t include some sort
of physical activity I don’t feel right.”
▲ Elliptical bikes have a gentle long-stride motion that
feels like running on air.
Take Your Fitness
to the Next Level!
8C – 8-speed. The 8C is the world’s most popular elliptical bike. You’ll
feel like you’re “running on air” with eight gears capable of tackling
tough climbs, it suits athletes and recreational riders. Whether your
goal is to lose weight, crosstrain or just get moving, it delivers the best
bang for your buck.
11R – 11-speed. If you seek the ultimate elliptical experience, the 11R
is the only one that offers the patented running-like pedaling motion,
vibration-dampening carbon-fiber drive arms, and a folding-steering
column for easy transport – and has the widest gear range of any bike.
Over 250 high schools, colleges & universities use the ElliptiGO as a
training tool for their cross-country running teams. Low impact training
allows recovery of injured hips, knees, ankles. So smooth
it feels like running on air, very gentle on your joints.
ElliptiGO delivers a low-impact, full-body workout that burns 33% more
calories than a traditional bike. Stand-up riding reduces stress on your
neck/back and eliminates seat pain. It is a great workout since it engages
your core and upper body in addition to your legs. The higher riding
position makes it easier to see and be seen.
Electric conversion
kits available for
all models.
▲ Fluid 365 trainer – Make your ElliptiGO work for
▲ RSUB – 8-speed. The premier road bike in the
SUB lineup may be the fastest standup on the road
today with full-size 700c tires and disc brakes to
COMMUNITY continued from 19
friendship. It also officially secured our Tramily Name of
PBJ. And so, the PBJ Challenge 2022 was born.
As it happened, in 2022 the Adirondack Mountain Club
and the NPT were both celebrating a 100-year anniversary.
The club took this opportunity to award a special patch
and other incentives to anyone who raised a minimum of
$100 and completed 100 miles inside the Adirondack Park
that year. Did someone say patch? Challenge on!
Together we progressively completed the trail in
September 2022 by hiking it northbound in seven sections.
We learned to backpack and how to sleep in remote
wilderness. A first for each of us. All in, we did much
more than 138 miles, all with intention, except for that
time we walked halfway around Tirrell Pond following an
unmarked herd path. A lesson in navigation learned. We
could not have completed the trail without the help and
support of friends and family who drove us to trailheads,
hiked with us and listened to our tales from the trail. The
quality time spent with each other, and our collective ability
to lead, follow and learn from each other was a gift. Jen
is no longer the only hiker in the group.
Orienteering was a sidebar activity on the original PBJ
list of challenges; 2023 was the year we finally took the
time to learn how to use our compasses. We successfully
completed the NPT with the use of maps, staying focused,
and by using a few tricks – like pointing our poles in the
direction of travel when going off trail.
In 2021, we learned about the Empire Orienteering
Club. EMPO has virtual courses available, so we decided
to give map and compass a try in Moreau Lake State
Park, a place we frequent and feel comfortable going offtrail.
We downloaded the UsynligO app, (which means
‘InvisibleO’ in Norwegian), printed out some maps, and
headed into the woods. Since we were “winging it,” our
logical approach was to go from one checkpoint to the
next in a straight line. The first time out, in two hours we
found zero checkpoints. The second time out, after some
research and a map and compass class, we found two…
in three hours. This had to be easier, people were getting
through the whole course in 45 minutes.
Pam, diving in feet first, decided to sign up for the
New York Adventure Racing Association’s Trilogy Race.
Adventure racing is most often a team sport which
requires participants to navigate an unmarked wilderness
course over a period of time, using only maps
and a compass to collect checkpoints. Adventure races
incorporate multiple off-road disciplines, but primarily
include mountain biking, trekking and paddling. Total
immersion! This time around Jen and Beth hemmed and
hawed. This race required mountain bikes, an additional
cost to the racing fee. It also required that PBJ learn how
to ride those mountain bikes and how to successfully use
a compass. At the time, Beth was getting stronger on her
road bike and wanted to ride as far and fast as she could.
Jen was committed to several ultra trail running events
and didn’t see how she could commit.
Was this to be the end of PBJ? Jen and Beth found a way
to make it work, because we both wanted another bike in
our growing collections. We all took a Map & Compass
Fundamentals skills workshop offered by the Adirondack
Mountain Club. We practiced, watched YouTube videos,
read articles, listened to podcasts, and eventually signed
up for the NYARA Trilogy Race in June and the Maine
Summer Adventure Race in July.
▶ PBJ SLIDING TO
THE FINISH OF THE
PBJ TRIATHLON, 2021.
Welcome to the PBJ Challenge 2023. Through our
research we realized that a team of four would be ideal
so we welcomed Liz DaBramo (Moreau) our team and
became PB&JeLi. Blessed with good weather, these races
were a great experience and proof that if dropped in the
woods with only a map and compass, we can now find
our way home.
Over the course of the past three years, we have rediscovered
our athletic happy places and have excelled. Pam
learned that she loves adventure racing and mountain biking,
Beth rides fast and goes longer and harder on the roads,
and Jen fell down the ultra trail running rabbit hole and can’t
get out, as hard as she tries. Our friendship is strong and we
continue to find time to spend with each other enjoying the
outdoors – even when it’s not our passion sport.
What we found out is that each one of us is a runner…
